Is the vegan diet right for certain people?

Paul explains why the argument that our relation to primates would imply that humans eating plants is optimal, is false. Paul and Shannen explain their personal testimonials with how they felt while on a vegan diet, and their observations of vegans around them.

One of the hardest lessons I learned was to eat a lot of fatty foods to be satiated but not full. Like I used to have to add 4cups broccoli and 2 cups wild rice with my pound of ground beef to be "full" in my stomach but later realized we are all taught to be full with fillers

Agreed! It's such a valuable investment because of how much better one's quality of life can be eating high quality animal-based foods. The benefits of cutting out seed oils, corn syrup and gluten, alone are fantastic, but when you take that extra step to go for grass-fed beef, raw dairy, organs, pasture-raised eggs, your body gets exactly what it's always been looking for and you feel so much better knowing that you're getting the highest quality stuff you can imagine. It's the best investment anyone can make, hands down.

I was vegan for maybe a year and a half; but in reality, I had cravings for meat and I would eat egg & chicken fried rice every now and then. Finally I had enough while I was on a road trip and I had double beef cheeseburgers for 7 days straight from In & Out and I felt incredible. That was about 6 years ago. Now I'm animal--based, no seed oils, no corn syrup, no gluten. I eat liver and heart, grass-fed beef, pasture-raised eggs and raw cheese and honey every day and I feel better than I have ever felt in my life. No medications, proper sleep, animal-based diet and exercise is all we need.

I was raised vegetarian. I didn't try beef until 2012 at the age of 37 after having two kids. Looking back I can see how the vegetarian diet literally caused a great deal of gut inflammation. I don't know if I would have developed celiac disease if I had been raised on a meat based diet. I can't turn back time.... I am grateful for beef now and to be preparing meat based meals for my family daily. Thanks for the great content. The whole idea of protein this or that I mean most ppl doing even know how much they need. But when at home i was in a omnivoroys house with a mom who was part of tge new age/wiccan community which is chalk full of vegans and vegitarians. While my diet is meat and other animal product centric, i do occasionally eat vegan or vegitarian meals as achange of pace because i learned as a child to see it as a rare treat at pot lucks or visiting homes of my moms vegan freinds. Im doing keto to treat some medical issues including hishimotos, reactive hypoglycemia, and suspected ibs. Ive never really been on tye vegan or plant based train, especially raw vegan. And with my digestive issues ive found one of my biggest triggers is raw veg, even if i tolerate the same veg well fermented or cooked. Examples of this was a recent purchase of a jack in thebox salad no dressing as part of onthe go supper. I paired with per boiled eggs, pouch tuna, cheese cubes, and pepperoni slices. Spent days with gas, bloating, stomach gurgkes, and spray paint poos. Mind u i tolerate carrots and tomatoes well, pickles which are cucumbers too. Never been a fan of oceberg lettuce. But all of those raw really messed me up.

@@paoladellabilancia5965 That's not exactly true. There are significant nutritional differences between different kinds of animal products. Fish tends to have DHA and ECA, but also histamines and mercury, not to mention many fish have a higher protein/fat ratio than beef. Nutritionally, they are quite different, although both appear to supply at least most necessary nutrients. It seems entirely appropriate to specify what kinds of animals products one includes in a diet. I, for one, eat primarily dairy. (Yes, significantly more than half of my calories are sourced from dairy products, and I've cut out most plant foods.) It's worth noting that I probably get a different balance of nutrients from someone who eats mostly eggs, beef muscle, fish, or organ meats instead. However, all of them are good sources of most essential nutrients, unlike most plant foods. Then there are of course cultural and religious distinctions. More instance, Roman Catholic Lent involves some days without meat, but fish is unrestricted. (Orthodox Lent involves an extended period without vertabrate meat, but other animal products are unrestricted.) And if you keep kosher, as do I, then you don't mix meat and dairy, but fish and dairy can be mixed freely. (For most Jews, anyway; denominations vary.) Long story short, there is a difference between (mammal) meat and fish (meat), although both are animal-based nutrition. Plant-based diets don't work, but it does seem possible to be relatively healthy on a meat-free diet, or at least a mammal-free diet.

I follow the McDougall diet mostly. Most energy comes from eating whole grains, potatoes and beans. It is possible to burn 5,000 calories in one day backpacking in the mountains. The only way to use that much energy is with carbohydrates. Fat just doesn't cut it, mostly because the liver can only convert about 1,200 calories worth of ketones in one day. Just can't make up the difference of 5,000 calories by burning straight fat. People in ketosis mostly prefer sedentary activities, including going to a gym and sitting while lifting. Last November, I got a blood test: total cholesterol: 113 LDL cholesterol: 52 fasting glucose: 74 C reactive protein: 2.0 And last month I got my APO-b done: 70

With all due respect, I don’t believe that eating “animal based” is the only way to cure the damage done by an extremely restrictive deficient diet (raw frugivore whole food etc). Speaking from personal experience, I feel just as good now that I am eating an appropriate amount of protein, fat, and nutrients from plants, paying attention to make sure I get enough of certain nutrients. Eating meat is not a religion. Yes steak is delicious but it’s not the only way to be healthy and there’s no scientific reason to think that our ancestors were healthy because their diets were. A good vegan diet is not SO easy, it takes some planning, but it’s just as easy and definitely cheaper than the kind of diet Dr Saladino advocates for.

@@Danny-zm5rh I have heard her interviewed several times. She makes good points and is an interesting person as I recall, but I think this video misprepresents what a vegan diet could be (yes if done correctly or at least optimally) not just the fad versions. Raw fruit diets are absurd and there’s a huge swath of possibility between something like that and going full carnivore that is often ignored in the online diet world. I think for people who cannot afford ethically raised meat or those who have an ethical objection to killing sentient animals, a plant based diet can work. There are a lot of things our ancestors did that are not worth clinging to, I’m not sure why diet has to be a special case. I don’t have all the answers af all but am open to the idea that perhaps there is a better way with all the knowledge and technology we have now.

@@quiteatinganimals I think life is life. If you're judging one as superior or more worthy, that's pretty shallow and dubious. Plants express anxiety and react to physical injury. They want to live. At the end of the day, you make the choices that support your health, in the best ways you can. Don't buy from slaughterhouses, support family farms. Keep backyard chickens for your own eggs, or find someone near you who does. Go fishing. Small farms often sell fresh raw goat milk and cheese. You can eat animal foods without literally taking a life every day. People who hunt can eat that animal for 6 months. I love animals, been rescuing them since I was a teenager. I fell for the vegan ethos for 10 years. But I'd never go back to it. If you care more for the life of an animal than your own body, that's your choice.
