I worked as a professional diver from 1982 to the late 90's and my work watch was a Seiko - ultra reliable and unbreakable and still as good now. I have been watching your videos with the intention of investing in a 'special' watch and Tudor has been a favourite so far - maybe a Seiko Prospex would be more apt. Thanks you I will keep watching for more inspiration.

Common misconception: “Zaratsu” does not translate to “katana polish”, “mirror blade”, or anything like that. It’s a Japanese transliteration of “Sallaz”, the Swiss-German tin-plate polishing machine that Grand Seiko began using in the 1950s, and has no technical or historical relation to the polishing techniques of Japanese swords. Zaratsu/Sallaz polishing is unique in its use of the flat surface of the plate, which can produce a smoother finish and sharper lines than the round edge of a traditional polishing wheel. While this method is difficult and unforgiving, it is not exclusive to Seiko- a handful of other manufacturers use the same process, including Japanese brethren Citizen (on their Chronomaster) and Minase.

This is why Rolex doesn't "re-issue" an older version; technically, it's the same watch that has simply evolved. The blandness is familiarity. Everyone has imitated it or made a homage for quite some time. To me, modern Rolexes (except for the Explorer) have become soul-less. They just don't do it for me like they used to 40 years ago.

I love the video, IDGuy. I think the LX carves out a proper niche for itself, though I would hold off on getting an LX until Seiko comes out with a 40-42mm size diver, with an updated clasp. I don’t get hung up on brand names, so I think comparing a Seiko to a Rolex isn’t necessarily a problem. Personally, however, I would still prefer the Submariner, since I find it to have a more compact and conservative form factor than the Seamaster and the LX, and the Sub is a better all rounder as a one watch. Coincidentally, Ken Okayama designed the Enzo Ferrari, so your car analogy was also fitting.

  • @marioaquilina248

While the Submariner remains the starting point for all diver watches,Seiko produces some of the best diver pieces which cater for almost all budgets. In this case Seiko gives Rolex a very serious challenge. If the Seiko was 40/41mm it would sweep off the Sub easily in my modest opinion. Thanks for the Video.

That Seiko LX might be the ultimate tool watch. I'm really interested in that Spring Drive movement. I'd say the only thing that really surprises me about it is the clasp for the bracelet. Even the MM200 has a milled clasp. Seiko is prone to some odd decisions, but I love them and this watch all the same. Excellent video. I have 8 Rolex, which includes the Daytona, Batman, and the Hulk. I have twice as many GS. I agree with your assessment and I would like to add a few details from my experience. I have currently four spring-drive. My 5th, the latest manual spring-drive 9R31 Sunbeam is on its way. On the average, i get 3 sec per month. That's Japanese modesty for you. The clasp would be like what you get on a GS diver or a marine master which is designed for practicality as a diver's tool should. The bulge on the clasp is just as iconic as the crown. It's just like the SBGC series chronograph being nicknamed the Dragon for obvious reason. If you are into iconic vintage Seiko, you would understand. The LX is designed and certified for saturation diving without helium gas. The Sub is not suitable saturation diving. Though the Sea Dweller has helium, but, it has an obsolete manual function. As for the finishing, i reproduce here my comments on the comparison between the Dragon and the Daytona. I have the Jade Dragon SBGC207 which comes in a one of a kind croc strap made to last forever, it seems. It looks more rugged everyday with seasoning. I will compare it with my Daytona 116503 for a point blank value proposition. If you have both, start by feeling your finger over the crown, the guard, and the pushers, then the edges. Now, you can feel the difference between a handmade watch and a machine made watch. Try not to press to hard on the Rolex, though, or you may cut your finger. The Daytona +30 sec per month is the most accurate of my Rolex. The Dragon hardly moved a sec over a month. Don't say it's not mechanical. It has a 50 jewels 415 parts movement and it's 1/3th the price of the Daytona. The LX, at 4200USD, after 25% regular discount is less than half the price of the Sub. Yes, it's justified. If you prefer the GS pricing, then, get the GS. If you have a lower budget, the marine master, a real diver, is still around for you at 2700USD new. I don't see any reason to complain.

@@vtheglad9266 You are welcomed. Recently, there was a video comparing Rolex and GS. This one caught my eyes bec it has the main frame picture with the left half Submariner hour hand and the right half GS Hi-beat Diver's minute hand. That's a wrong picture if you do not spell out the differences. The Rolex hands are way smaller and shorter. It requires an excellent mechanism to carry bigger and longer hands, especially if it's running at higher frequency (5Hz Vs 4Hz), maintaining a higher power reserve (55 Hr vs 48Hr) and at the same time, keep accurate time. It's right to price the 30 Jewels 5R65 spring-drive more than the 26 jewels 8L35. It's more decorated for a start. The tourbillion is a marvel, but, now you can have one for 500usd. The spring-drive is a standing marvel, testament of Piaget's 70K failure. If they had been successful, the Swiss will tell you how marvelous the spring-drive, and is worth every penny of your 70K. There is video by watchbox comparing Omega Deville tressor with GS Elegance SBGK002. I copy here my comment: "The gs not only has a better mechanism than the patek calatrava small sec but way better all round. The dial is an art piece. Wrong comparison. The tressor should be compared to the gs caliber 9s64, the latest being the sbgw231 which cost one third the price of the omega. The hands and indices of the gs dances even in dim lights. The tressor though more decorated, runs at lower beat and yet has lower power reserve." Still, i take my hat off to the Omega for their guts. It takes an incredible mechanism to carry a long minute hand and an even longer second hand at high frequency (3.5 vs 4Hz), maintaining high power reserve (60 vs 72Hr) and at the same time keep 'chronometer time.' Watch connoisseur called this sec hand the third hand, and the best of watches. This basis of a good manual wind gives you the platform for a good automatic mentioned earlier. Try to find one of this caliber in the big names and see. Lost in complications for complications sake, people are hoodwinked and missed the most i important lesson in horology. This is the beginning of knowing what is a good watch.

Really appreciate the commentary. Well thought out and makes sense. Know exactly what you mean about the titanium and have wondered why Rolex has not gone down this route. It is also lighter than stainless, but I do also know Rolex uses 90xx grade not 316, but titanium is still the lighter. There are also other exotic alloys that no one has tried yet. The mechanism of the Seiko is a winner and especially the reserve function, which I feel is a must on a modern watch. The only thing I'm of contrary position is the aesthetics. Think the large lumes of the Seiko are slightly garish. Overstated and large like its trying too hard to be stylish. And perhaps is perceived to be fashionable purely because its different like most modern pieces, but how the design will be perceived with time is where the test with aesthetics will be. Whereas the Submariner is understated and tasteful, purely being the product of the subtle design finesse of form follows function that seems to follow through. Agree with you on the crown on the Seiko though. Would like to see other novel features come as standard on watches. The Seiko style movement I think is the way to go. Simple, long lasting, reserve function, and the ability, in future, because of being an electrically operated system to add other functions on later.

While my rolex has appreciated over 250%, Rolex has kept the watch with the same movement. My watch has the 3185 and the newer models have the 3186 movement. By now almost 15 yrs have passed and my watch is trouble free and when examined at close range you wouldn’t know its 15 yrs old. To the point i am considering buying a seiko for sure but i like the older models from previous generation. In terms of value seiko wins for design, quality, cost, reliability and overall functionality. Buying a rolex now is insane as Rolex drives the demand and you cannot even get a stainless steel submariner. Excellent review, very in depth and you really have done your HW.

I own a basic Seiko SKX009 (Pepsi) diver watch, it is just as accurate as my Rolex Batman (2016) in my opinion, but what I feel when I wear my Rolex is priceless. I enjoy wearing my Seiko very much and I use it for a beater. I have been wanting to buy a Grand Seiko SBGN003 or a GS GMT SBGE201, but my issue isn't with the quality of the watch, in my opinion Seiko group makes some of the best working timepieces. The problem I have is if I every go for resale, They have no value because I have been told by watch resellers that it's just a Seiko. Just to add I buy watches to wear not for resale, but in my opinion you never know when needs change. Great video as always and all the best.

The only reason I would want this watch is for the spring drive movement's quartz level of accuracy and the perfect sweep of the seconds hand. But otherwise, Seiko is asking too much for a prospex watch. Seiko is known to have quality control issues on prospex and other lower end lines of watches in regards to the alignment of hour markers, chapter rings, date windows etc. I might as well go look for a used Grand Seiko.

Yes i totaly agree with you. When they presented this new Seiko prospex LX (for Luxus) SNR029J at Baselworld 2019, I was thinking that it's a great diver watch, better than a Submariner. The Sping Drive movement is better than the Rolex movement, more accurate, with the same 72 hours power reserve... And the Titanium material is 40% lighter that the Rolex 904L stainless steel... So the watch is much more comfortable on the wrist than the Rolex... Ceramic bezel, antireflective sapphire cristal, bigger hands than on the Submariner and of course 300m water resistance ! And the Seiko lumibright lume is as shinny as the Rolex chromalight.. The Seiko Prospex LX SNR029J is about 6 200€, so 1000€ less than the Rolex Submariner. This Seiko is a great value for that price... Very interesting the comparison with a Formula one in your video... For sure this Prospex LX SNR029J should belong to the Grand Seiko collection. Because now such luxus models with a grand Seiko mouvement like the Spring Drive and high quality hand crafted, creates confusion between Seiko regular models and Grand Seiko models...

Steinhart is just remarkable build quality - and fantastic physical balance and confidence on the wrist , true value with their nod to earlier Rolex designs that are no longer being made - simply cool . The general premise of this discussion misses the point -we all know that most 300$ solar quartz driven watch will be more shock resistant, last longer without a service and tell better time then a mechanical Swiss or Rolex. The interest in purely mechanical pieces related to their relationship to history and events, ancient design and build elements, early mechanical horological principles and architecture. We know Quartz digital and hybrid technologies will always be the best value to tell the time - but thats not why you buy a purely mechanical piece. ☺

There are plenty of better watches out there, watches that come close to the quality at a substantially lower price (Steinhart being one) but the Submariner is like any other luxury brand/item. The Omega and Rolex both have much cleaner handset aesthetics, I really like the Seiko prospex LX line especially the green diver and batman GMT. but i'm not at all a fan of the extended tail end's on the hour and minute hand's of the LX divers... I could accept the slightly chubbier hour hand on the Prospex LX GMT handset as they don't have the bulky/ugly tail ends but then they put the seconds hand pip on the tail end... which is one of my biggest watch pet peeves. Even the Grand Seiko Diver and GMTs cant get it quite right... the GS diver still has a slight tail end on the minute hand but It doesn't really bother me too much, since I still like the overall aesthetics much better then Omega or Rolex diver handsets, but then the GS diver has the seconds hand lume pip on the wrong end (kinda a seiko thing I guess) and the GS GMT just doesn't even bother featuring lume on the seconds hand. They just cant quite get it right... The LX bezel is one of my favorite looking dive bezels though... I'll for sure be modding my ISL-28 with a SKX007 LX bezel... the aesthetics should pair vary well with the angular ISL-28 case (Seiko Samurai case)

Better movement or not (and even that is arguable depending on what is important to you), this Omega is not even inflicting a wound on the Submariner's sales...let alone killing the sales. Those that want the best value for their money can go buy a Citizen or a Casio and get a durable watch that keeps perfect time. People who buy these expensive mechanical watches are buying a statement and jewelry for the most part. Those that want the Submariner don't give a rat's ass about a couple of meaningless technical details that the movement of an Omega might have that the Rolex does not. They want a Rolex. Period. Very few people wanted the Submariner and then said, "Oh wait, now I want this Omega diver instead." Some, perhaps, but very few. There's such a high demand for Submariners that the demand has not eroded by even one unit since the launch of this Omega. I have one high end watch which is the submariner and it was gifted to me from my father and it’s so so useable and is great when your wrist swells during different times of the day, you just ease it off a few notches. I missed this so much as I normally hardly ever wear the Rolex but as I see everyday in the office guys taking off their watches n rubbing their wrist then they leave, myself included, the watch on the desk to get a break from it after all the typing. When I do wear the Rolex I found myself just loosening it off a bit. It’s such a useful mod and don’t see why it isn’t a much more common feature on straps. I ended up getting an aftermarket one for my Seiko.

I love the fact Seiko has such a large diver family so you can select the diver best for you. I own a Sumo and love it. This is also a negative in that you can always find a cheaper alternative in their lineup that does the job of their $3k+ watches. I find Seiko design more interesting than the Sub but less luxurious. So it is just a matter of picking your poison. For the money, I find my Sumo unbeatable in design and quality.

Both amazing watches. Still the Rolex for me if $$$ and waitlist wasn't a factor. The Rolex is just more classic in dimensions, less garish and the price difference is just 19% (For the Rolex 114060) as of October 2020.

Is that a sub?!...no, it's a Seiko. Is that a sub?!...no, it's a Tudor. Is that a sub?!...no it's a Steinhart. Every brand wants to be like the real the real thing. Many people talk down about Rolex, but...they buy watches that look like Rolexes lol.

This is a fantastic video, I love your analysis, thoughtful and entertaining comparison. I agree the Seiko LX is superior to the Sub...but I wonder if it is worth more than a Seamaster? Thank you for an interesting video :)

I own both. My take. The spring drive is the better movement from a time keeping perspective. The Omega movement with it's anti magnetism is potentially more hard wearing. I think the finishing on the Omega is better. The Zaratsu polishing on the Seiko is great but the lines and overall shape is simple, the Omega has a beautifully complex and sculpted case and face which is multi faceted. The bracelet on the seamaster is miles better, the on the fly adjustment is superior to Seiko's, the only downside is that it is not tapered. Overall at MSRP the Omega is the better watch. It holds its value better and the QC is better (some complaints of alignment in the Seiko LX series). The Seiko is a great watch still though, I'd buy it second hand. I got both of my LXs at 55% of retail price.

The knurl on the knob of the stem of the Seiko is much more functional with cold wet hands, with or without gloves. Mark 1 for Seiko.

What we have to concern is value price. With a price of rolex, they should and can produce much better spec of their watch. So I think Seiko is more serious producing a piece of watch with best spec and best value price. 👍

People tend to forget that Rolex are mass produced watches, somewhere around a million watches a year. They're pretty good watches and I'm sure worth the $10,000 or whatever the retail price is. But people who are bamboozled by the brand name to pay double that in the aftermarket space aren't exactly the brightest stars in the universe. As far as the Seiko is concerned, the Spring Drive is the future. To sum it up those who say "It's only a Seiko." are either watch snobs or don't understand the massive impact that the company has had and still has on the watch industry. After all they almost killed the Swiss watch industry in the 1980's, and this Spring Drive technology may well have a major effect as the technology trickles down, as it inevitably does.

Very well states, unfortunately those snob wannabes are too dumb to understand that and I may add sans it’s current retention status Rolex is a very overrated and overpriced even at its current msrp and for all of its models. Anyone who searches online will find them to be abundant at inflated prices yet they still think they rare and made im low quantities.

Why would this Seiko have the Submariner, “on the ropes”, when watches as excellent as the Planet Ocean didn’t. What about other Spring Drive divers that have been available for years. This makes no sense.

My Seiko 5 has been through hell and back, trapped in elevator doors, bashed and scratched. Aside from the fact that I don't mind if a £100 watch gets scratched, it has never let me down. A Rolex would be a complete waste of money for me and would do the opposite of impressing my friends. They would all be worried that I had lost my mind. The Seiko is just expensive enough to take off and give the taxi driver while I pop indoors for the money, but not so valuable that he'll be gone when I come back out.
