Is The RIG'D Ultra Swing Worth The Money? | Outback Wilderness

With the prices of products continuing to skyrocket, you have to ask if these items are actually worth the money. The Subaru outback wilderness is one vehicle that can definitely benefit from a ‪@rigdsupply6945‬ and all the available options they offer for attachments. Having said that, the price tag for this spare tire carrier can start to get expensive, but if adventuring further is part of your life then the reality is a spare tire carrier is all part of the equation.

For anyone wondering, the 2023 Wilderness does not have a pinch weld around the spare area like his does, so the Ultraswing fits perfectly without having to bend anything. Also, we have the factory suspension with 245/65R17 BFG K02's and Motegi MR118s, there is maybe the tiniest bit of suspension sag but it probably wouldn't really be noticeable if you weren't really looking for it.

my 2023 OBW absolutely DOES have this pinch weld around the rear wheel well ... my guess is you don't have the OEM hitch if the pinch weld is not an issue for you.

You used an impact? You should have used a torque wrench set at 100lbs as the instructions say. The rattle is clearly coming from the pinch weld sheet metal that you bent, its rubbing on the front of the mount where the wedge is, you can actually see it touching in the video. Also, there should be two 5/8 pin holes, it looks like you pushed it in too far, use the forward (first) hole and don't push in it that far.

Hey Josh, it's Mark @palubaru_adventures. Great video as usual. I went with the DirtCom trail swing and absolutely love it. BUT, for those that purchase it, you cannot just simply bend the pinch weld out of the way because their wedge system tightens from the rear, not the front like the Rig'd version. I had to notch and box in a space into the tire tub to make it work. I have pics on my Instagram for those wanting to see it. I too am looking for way to relocate the rear cam. I don't want to do a separate aftermarket camera and display. Surely there is a way to get it done. PLEASE keep us informed. Great content man. Hope to see it in person some day.

  • @roamingwithjosh

Congrats on the OBW! Back up camera with any tire carrier is pretty much useless and I haven't found a good way to re-locate the camera yet to make it usable. That's a huge downside to having larger tires and needing a tire carrier. I turned the RAB system off long ago when I was carrying my mountain bike and had the emergency brake lock up on me backing out of the garage. My best advice would be do the same when you have anything attached to the rear of the car.

Im just planning to squeeze my spare into the oem compartment until a back up cam is integrated into the spare carrier. But how do the additions affect your OBW's fuel economy?? Just the tires and lift have already made a noticeable difference for me and since this is also my daily driver im trying to balance my setup between being fuel efficient as well as capable without having to take off of swap aspects of my setup when we are overlanding

  • @roamingwithjosh

We are currently at 19.2 MPG with this setup and honestly we didn't lose much going with the lift and the spare tire carrier. We were getting 19.8 before we put the lift or carrier on. I'm pretty impressed with that. Thanks for the comment, Marquis!

Was looking at the Rig'D for a little bit a while back, ended up getting the Dirtcom Trailswing, and I will be setting mine up essentially the same way as yours once I get it with the rotopax off to the side, and a fold out table. It's a bit more expensive starting at 1,750, but I like the benefits that it has over the Rig'd and Wilco tire carriers. Definitely gonna be annoying without the backup camera though, but I can live without it.

I've been looking at the Dirtcom Trailswing but the price...WOW. Now that I think about it the stuff I put in my spare tire compartment might weigh less than the spare tire itself?? You wont like the price on these either lol. You might be able to buy a swing out hitch adapter for cheaper (around $380) and find a way to get your own box on there. There are quite a few hitch accessories that swing out and are customizable for your needs (bikes, cargo boxes, cargo baskets, skii racks, ect...) Here is a link for the actual item you were asking about. www.etrailer.com/Hitch-Cargo-Carrier/Yakima/Y62VR.html?feed=npn&Google%20%7C%20Shop%20-%20Hitch%20Cargo%20Carrier&adgroupid=92297485840&campaignid=202962497&creative=411634353747&device=c&devicemodel=&feeditemid=&keyword=&loc_interest_ms=&loc_physical_ms=9031933&matchtype=&network=g&placement=&position=&gclid=Cj0KCQjw4PKTBhD8ARIsAHChzRLWc1QPpY0WWnIuvcC1ZG3XrOwUWiuKydUO5Hun2dny-iZK0otJbxoaAuzcEALw_wcB You can even double up and go for 2!! lol. www.etrailer.com/Hitch-Cargo-Carrier/Yakima/Y74ZR.html

I understand the need for this with an SUV, or a midsize pickup. I opted not to spring for it for my F-150- I’ve got my spare vertical in the front of the bed and it’s just fine. The weight savings, not losing the backup camera, and especially the price are all huge dealbreakers. $2000 for a tire carrier?! C’mon.

Instead of the fuel packs I would have a water can for drinking and cleaning. Ewwww, you just said it sags the car, is it sagging without the tire on? I don't intend to use it as a tire carrier.
