Is the NSRV as Bad as the NAB?

The New Revised Standard Version Bible is the Bible used in Canadian novus ordo churches. Please pray for the poor Catholics in Canada
I inadvertently used NRSV instead of NSRV in many places here. I suppose I'll have to redo this (but I have to psych myself up for it) Sorry about that mea culpa.

I checked these verses against my Revised Standard Version Second Catholic Edition (Great Adventure Bible from Ascension; Bible in a Year Podcast) and was relieved to find it much better aligned to the traditional text. It is not perfect, but the mistranslations that bothered me the most were fixed. That said, this is enough for me to ensure I have a DR bible available for study.

I respectfully disagree with some of brethren in the comments. A trash can is precisely where such an abomination masquerading as the Word of God belongs!

Having spent a lot of time with both translations, I would say they both have problems but the NABRE is better. They are both products of quasi-modernist textual criticism but the NABRE has three things going for it, in my opinion: 1. It retains a lot of "Amen" statements of Our Lord instead of translating them as "truly" or "assuredly." 2. It retains several "I am" statements of Our Lord in the text, or points them out in the footnotes so they are not lost. 3. Where it uses "inclusive" language, it does so much more carefully than the NRSV, which puts eliminating male pronouns ahead of accuracy in numerous places. Peace.

I have the Ignatius Press Didache Bible that I think uses the second RSV-CE and I know some of the issues cited in the video do not exist. I just read the verse where it says the demon can only be driven out by prayer and fasting. So I’m wondering if the second edition is better (although I know, as you state, the Douay-Rheims is the approved translation. I bought that Bible before I knew some of these things. Though I sometimes personally have trouble with some of the old fashioned language and so do my kids. So it would be nice to have a good version that might be more accessible without changing the message!). Maybe you’ve already done a video on this and I haven’t found it yet.

Maybe when you read Luke 1:28 you should keep reading to Luke 1:42 and see what you come up with.. When Mary visits Elizabeth she tells her “Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb” .. A scribe or someone inserted that which is from 1:42 into 1:28 at a later time, Older manuscripts do not have it in that location but it still is in 1:42 .. So nothing is lost.

I went to my local catholic church today. The church of mt. Carmel. I asked them what bible they use currently and they said the NAB so i bought a copy. The night before i ordered 3 different bibles from amazon (KJV, NABRE, and the NRSV Versions). I dont know much about any of the versions so i started to do research and came upon your video. I currently have 4 bibles now 😂 NAB, NABRE, KJV, and NRSV are any of the 4 i have a good read or should i get a 5th version? I currently pray the rosary and would like a bible that goes with that also. I dont mind old english. Any suggestions?

You're taking Isaiah 7:14 out of context. If you read the entire chapter, the context is Isaiah urging King Ahaz of Judah to hold fast to faith in God, rather than trying to make peace with the northern kingdom (Israel) that was threatening to invade. The sign which is described starting in verse 14 is that when the boy Immanuel, soon to be born of the "alma" (virgin/young woman in Hebrew), reaches a certain age, Israel will have been destroyed by Assyria, and it is Assyria that will then be threatening at Judah's doorstep. Contrary to Chrysostom, interpreting "alma" in the sense of "young woman" rather than "virgin" does not reduce the impact of the sign; sure, young women give birth all the time, but that is not the main part of the sign, it is an illustration of how quickly Israel will fall to Assyria (i.e. within the few years of Immanuel's childhood). The Fathers of the Church should be taken seriously but they are not infallible. The Church (along with Protestants and Orthodox, as all of us believe in the Virgin Birth) has interpreted this chapter as referring to the Virgin Birth of Jesus, and the name Immanuel, "God with us", potentially referring to Jesus' human and divine natures, without denying that Isaiah was also referring to a short-term event that Ahaz would see. There was no Virgin Birth during the time of Ahaz and Isaiah, or any time when Assyria threatened Jerusalem, obviously. Applying this sign to Jesus actually has some obvious doctrinal problems, at least at a superficial level, particularly verses 15-16: "He shall eat curds and honey when he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good. For before the child knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land before whose two kings you are in dread will be deserted." Jesus never had confusion about how to refuse evil and choose the good, even as an infant, let alone as a young boy. At a superficial level at least, applying these verses to him would be blasphemous.

I know this is kinda of a older video but it seems like the book is indeed badly written in my opinion there's verses where it doesn't really say a lot just a lot of words and sometimes it doesn't even make sense. The church I "go" to gave me the revised edition when I was going to church school on Saturdays and I never read the bible because obviously it's a lot of pages I once tried to but I gave up the first 5 pages of the book. I immediately took it outside in a trash can and moved the can away from the house. It was more important to me to get it out of the house right away than to give it a proper burning.

There are zillions of “Religious Opinions,” but there is only One True Faith. Even though your sincerely held “Opinion” may seem quite convincing, if it is not completely congruent with the One Faith that Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ gave into the hands of Saint Peter and the Apostles for safekeeping and transmission, it is the gravest of errors. And just so you can’t claim that “Nobody ever told me!” - I tell you now. Holding anything other than the One True Catholic Faith may very likely keep you out of Heaven.
