These bacteria and probiotic discussions are great. I’m glad this is a topic getting attention. Something I hadn’t thought of as a bacteria source, I was listening to Taras top shelf aquatics this morning, a video about fish in their refugiums. He mentioned that when the fish poop there contributing their bacterial contents to the aquarium. There’s been talk about fish poop as a Coral food,, I wonder what the foods that we feed our fish do to the Microbiome?

Right, healthy fish should have a healthy gut microbiome. Their excrement is then degraded by these bacteria, and those bacteria then serve to release more nutrients into the water column where the corals can then absorb the nutrients or potentially eat the bacteria or particulates from fish waste

Great episode. These guys are bringing so much to the hobby and it will be great to see where these ideas go in a couple years.

Great episode! Reminds me of the Jake days to be honest lol can Salem recommend some bacteria strains for usage that aren’t terrestrial types? I believe I read Pseudomonas fluorescens is a commensal?

Love this idea and Salem's expert advice. Fwiw aquaculture facilities probably have a different timeline for the microbiome. Once the bioflock has shipped or sunk, they can just start over which isnt an option in a long term reef tank setting. Ayo has anyone seen these aquaforest probiotic products? Similar concept i suppose but who knows what bacterial strains. Who can run a next gen sequencimg to find out?

Very interesting information, but I am not sure how practical this is for the average hobbyist. It also sounds like you are roped into it for the life of your tank once you start or it could create major issues down the road. If it was a purchase you could make like cultured phyto, this may be more viable. Not certain suiting up in Hazmat gear is viable as well. It is super exciting to see these young minds doing these experiments. It will undoubtedly shift the way we keep reefs ins the future.

High flow, light high. Weeping willow will get longer, thinner polyps and will look like a carpet of long tentacled anemone but more rhythmic flow. You can do this with Japanese deep water long tentacled neon green toadstools. Be aware of what other corals are around them. They don’t care for nepthia and sinularia,

@@ReefTherapy I'm 100% interested in the not melting tricks.... there are a few varieties that no matter what I do, eventually they melt, or the same one will melt out of nowhere, and of course they're generally more expensive, lol

what's up Salem, I spoke with Chris and he is definitely up for the meet.

Growing salmon for profit (weight etc) is not the same as growing salmon for health. Also wouldn’t most mixed bacterial cultures become monocultures in time? Lactobicillus would create lactic acid which would be like carbon dosing?

Correct - although I doubt lactobacillus would be surviving in these conditions as it prefers an acidic environment and the addition of calcium carbonate to the concoction would act as a buffer But many other strain will produce similar metabolites This strategy would likely lead to a significant decrease in nutrients in solution

Agreed, health vs weight is good discussion to dive into. From the studies I’ve reviewed the organisms displayed enhance immune response, increased growth rates, respiration, and increased red blood cell count among other notable improvements. While not directly applicable to corals, these health benefits noted in more complex organisms could potentially have other downstream positive effects on the corals. Population dynamics will shift over time in a closed environment, exploring these trends and dynamics will be important in the long run as trends begin to shift in the industry and new innovations are made.

I'd love to try intermittent ICP testing but with the cost of everything else in this hobby it's hard to justify anymore additional cost to: the boss/my wife.

I saw you had a Chem E, maybe a Mech E can provide insight on something other than chemistry.. like the technology you use to keep the tank alive 24/7 and what needs improvements what’s a gimmick etc…
