Is the New 3.0L Duramax Diesel Any Good? GMC Sierra 1500 AT4 Carbon Pro Review

My view of trucks, as a car guy, is that they're utility vehicles used for hauling and towing stuff. But what if you want to do all that, but also daily drive your truck and maybe get decent fuel economy too? This new Duramax diesel is an inline 6 putting out 277hp and 480lb/ft of torque, while also getting nearly 30mpg on the highway. It's an impressive engine, and this new Sierra 1500 has a bunch of features that make it an overall intriguing package. Come along for this episode were we review the all new 2020 Sierra 1500 AT4 Carbon Pro.

I'm a Chevy guy, who use to be a Ford guy, but who still owns 4 Fords, and 1 Chevy. I too think this is an awesome truck, the only issue I have with it is I don't like the looks of the new Sierra and love the looks of the new Silverado. GM needs to quit dicking around, and since they want to make the trucks look so different don't intentionally make the Silverado an inferior product. If I don't like the Sierras looks then I can just buy a Silverado, but I also might not want an inferior product. With Sierra you can get CarbonPro bed, (which is awesome) the doorhandle lock/unlock buttons are on all 4 doors handles in the Sierra, but just the front doors handles in the Silverado, power passenger seat in Sierra and it's manual in Silverado, I think the Sierra has rear passenger climate controls where Silverado doesn't, and a few other little silly differences that shouldn't be neglected in Silverado. I mean you can get some pretty pricey models of Silverado. You can option them to mid $60K to low $70K range so why neglect these little simple things on them. I get they want the GMC to be a liitle bit of a highend product (kind of like how T/A was a little bit fancier than Camaro even though at their heart they were the same vehicle) but if they're going to charge close to the same money for Silverado as they do Sierra then they need to start adding some of these little niceities to the Chevy that come in the GMC especially when it's your intended volume seller. Edit: Also offer a 3L Duramax in the Trail Boss. I mean why offer it in the AT4 but not offer it in the TB? And a RCSB 6.2L Silverado/Sierra in both 2WD and 4WD would be very nice.

The off road package is mainly used for rural areas. Where the roads aren't paved, pot holes everywhere, and it snows a lot in the winter. If you're living in the city and are mainly using a truck to haul lumber for home improvement projects you're better off getting the regular 1500 and save a ton of money

just an FYI - the 2WD version is maxed out on towing at 7400 lbs,, while the 4WD version max is 9000 lbs., which is more in line to what the V8 version does. I think it's adequate enough to do non-commercial towing while giving you more than double your gas mileage via diesel.

Nice looking truck. I bought a 2019 Chevy RST with the 5.3L V8. I really enjoy the new truck. I am intrigued by the new 3.0 diesel engine. I will keep an eye on longevity and reliability of it over the next few years. It does cost around $3000 extra to option it in. Diesel fuel costs significantly more at the pump. I am sure oil changes cost more. And you need to add DEF fluid. So even though it may be better on fuel that the gasoline alternatives, I am not sure the added cost is worth it. But if it proves itself out it may be the engine I choose for my next truck.

With the extra strength, it’ll last twice as long as a half ton truck. It’s just too bad, 300+ miles a day would be way easier with a ram interior.

The ONLY PROBLEM this truck has is the a thing with the 3.0l duramax, is a belt driven oil pump and people saying the truck is running hot and the oil pump has to be replaced at 150,000 miles which is kind of bad. So it's reliable, but then you will encounter a big repair bill at 150k. I would still buy this truck, but i would be prepared for that.

Fact is, the vast majority of people watching car review videos want to know details about the appearance and the function. Also, the 3.0 Duramax is a brand new engine, so no one can comment yet on reliability or longevity. You'll have to wait a few years for that data.

I thought the 3.0 was a good idea until I read it has a BELT driven oil pump along with the timing chains all at the BACK of the engine. 😧😧 Come on GM engineers you can do a lot better job than that if you were going to put the important stuff like that at the back of the engine why not make it gear driven. Always remember LONGEVITY is the name of the game and your 65k 2020 3.0L diesel will fall waaaay short in comparison to my 19k 1990 5.7 tbi engine. So I don't see any reason to spend that kind of $$$$$ for something that's not going to last.✌✌

I used to work at a transmission shop many years ago. I was the R and R ( remove and replace ) guy. I use to be able remove a transmission in 35 minutes and replace it in 25 minutes. With that be said there is a good reason why they put in the rear of the motor then the front. Its easier to get to the belt from the rear then have to get to it from the front.

Replace it in five years because it's a "Dodge" product... Biased much? First off RAM is it's own brand. They haven't been Dodge since 2010. Secondly that 12" touchscreen is an high end option. You can get the 8" Uconnect they've been making and perfecting for years. They also have cheaper options than that. Third I own a 2016 that I beat the crap out of regularly. 65k miles, basic maintenance, zero issues. My 8" Uconnect is still working flawlessly. I try to be unbiased and look at what each company has to offer. You lost me when you made it apparent right off the bat where your allegiances lie as far as trucks go.

"Worthwhile" is one word. Also, I never thought the F-150 would actually be the 4th best looking truck on the market; props to GM. Anyway, from what I've read: the 3.0L Duramax performance makes the truck horribly slow. And there's also the class lagging GM interior. How they still manage to produce something in 2020 that looks like it came from 2009, I don't know.
