Okay. I own this car. My other car is a 2018 M3 Comp. This car, I don’t care what anyone says, is an absolute blast to drive. It’s fun. It’s fast. I’ve been 160 in this car more than a handful of times (speed limiter) and let me tell you, it sticks to the road at those speeds. I’ve made charger RT owners cry. 718 owners weep. The stock exhaust, the torque is awesome. You feel it. I was extremely hesitant on getting it, and I don’t regret any of it. Such a blast to drive

Agee with you completely. Have only had mine a few months but love how it drives. A lot of the people who both do video reviews and comment on them have no idea how AWD actually works, and just keep harping on that worn out theme of “ it’s built off of a FWD platform” so what? When you are not engaged in the limits of traction, who cares if the front wheels are pulling you more than the rears are pushing you? It doesn’t matter at all. And if you have a perception that FWD means torque steer, drive this car, it has none. My only critique of the car is that apparent,y not all options are available in all markets,so all of these reviewers are testing slightly different versions of the car. Mine lacks auto cruise control and the better HK audio system that I would have definitely ordered had I had time to wait 6 months for a car. Besides that, the size is perfect and it’s a complete blast to drive.

I completely agree with you. I leased mine about 3 months ago and am laughing over all the stupid comments like “ it was based on a 1 series that started as a FWD car”, or it probably has torque steer”. This car has as much torque as the outgoing 2 series coupe and is just as quick, and it has terrific brakes and suspension. Mine lacks a few options I would have ordered if I had the chance, like active cruise, Harmon Karin and the sport seats, but when this lease is up I can see myself getting another one with all those extras. Mileage on the highway is over 37, around town low 30 s. I bet most of the critics of this car have never so much as driven one

Just purchased this a M235i Grand Coupe in Australia, upgraded from a F30 3 series. They come standard standard with heads-up display and headed seats and steering wheel. Absolutely love the car, didn't have to do any changes to this one, sounds great looks great and performs great.

I bought a m235i just a few weeks ago and I can tell you it's actually a great car. Some of the complaints you mentioned are not present as far as lacking heated, ventilated seat and head up display I have it all that. Granted it's not the traditional rear wheel drive I had before but definitely a far better car than the equivalent Mercedes which feels really horrible and more like a Renault Megane or Nissan Pulsar. The m235i xdrive beats all its competitors without question. 👍

Yes I think the car driven is a very poorly optioned example at this price. Either needs a bit more to be a great car or a much lower price with fewer dumb options.

Very fun review with that typical zany flair of yours Joe! Been waiting for this car, and I actually really like the platform it rides on. I love the interior design, Infotainment system...and it looks like the X Drive and power really puts down here. Having had a 2017 GTI and currently a 2018 Mazda 3 Hatch Sport, I am seriously considering this for my next lease or purchase. I wonder if BMW offers the red/pomegranate seat color in this Gran Coupe🤔

At the tip of the turn signal stalk there should be two buttons (see @ 12:08). Pressing one of them will cycle through the display info. You had it set on trip distance which puts the gear number at the bottom. One of them shows the drive mode in nice big letters (i.e D, R) and in manual mode it will say M1-8 depending on the gear you're in. I have the same setup on my X3 M40i

@Nicholas Grey yup! Hyundai Corp has taken a few BMW engineers and Audi designers as well. That includes the famous Albert Biermann from BMW M team who worked on the KIA Stinger, Genesis G70 and Veloster N. They also acquired Fayez Rahman from BMW in 2017. Making moves the Koreans are.

Looks nice, but for $51K not having heated or ventilated seats is definitely a deal breaker.

I tried to get a 60-70k Range Rover Velar with not heating or cooling seats. Dude/salesmen told me it’s hot in miami you don’t need heated seats. I said ok, then where’s the cooling 🤣🤣🤣🚮

I like it, but question the value aspect. I think it actually looks nicer than a S3 or CLA and those cars have been running FWD-platforms for awhile and do seem to sell well, so not a surprise BMW wants a slice of the action. The front & side profiles are great, but the rear decklid is too high IMO.

Really impressed by your review- you paid attention and noted so many details that other reviewers *cough shill/paid/mass-media-types* either 1) don't notice 2) don't care 3) are paid not to mention. Like the placement of the cigarette-lighter/USB ports straddling the cup-holders... Autotrader thought it was super convenient. And we know drive-thru people can't manage to give you a drink without the lid already having a small lake sitting on top! The M235i had definitely caught by eye, because I was looking for something compact that wasn't a hatch, but that also didn't sacrifice on torque/speed (I know, you're not going to get a challenger inside a mini). Now I'm not so sure if the M235i fits the bill- at least not for the $51k that you have mentioned as being a bit too high for what's offered. Thanks again for this video with some actual honesty!

That display is really nice tho. Big improvement vs previous gen. The rims are absolutely gorgeous tho.

It’s not foe carbon fiber trim... there are three different color trims with different ambient lighting patterns. That carbon esque pattern you’re referring too is just where the backlight for ambient lighting shines through. Also interior door handles are not seat buckle style... they are designed to resemblance the Hofmister Kink.

It feels like every reviewer of this car has to be initially apprehensive because of it's transverse mounted motor... At the end of the day at the JCW Clubman in a BMW M sport Snow Jacket...and that's not a bad thing because I love the JCW Clubman but I love the orange red leather interior you can get with the BMW as standard👍 I love the moment you really started pushing the car and started to enjoy it😎

I think the MSRP is a on the high side of things. And what is the deal with BMWs naming scheme? I remember when 325i meant a 2.5L inline 6 cylinder engine. This car badged M235i which you would think means you're in a turbo-charged inline 6 cylinder but no it's a turbo 4 cylinder- a $50k 4 cylinder with not a lot of options.

That front end looks like a true Darth Vader mask. Looks like it’s staring you down lol 😂🤣

How does it compare to the STI acceleration wise ? Seems rather sedated from your reaction. Kinda sounds underwhelming. Nice work Capt. Content. Does it feel front drive biased ? Would you go with the MB CLA 35 or the BMW ?

My M235i definitely feels much more a front wheel drive. I have to admit personally I prefer rear wheel drive. I also have a Merc A class AMG and it feels more like a cheap Renault/Nissan. I'd buy another BMW long before another Mercedes.

mine has heated seats but no sunroof, I would prefer the sun roof ! But yeah this is a dope little car, my last car was a B5 Audi S4 and this is fun even though it's automatic transmission

Expectations were too high on this one because of the brand and its reputation for being the ultimate driving machine.

Looks like winner to me. Even decent MPGs. Price isn't crazy town either. And that black is SHARP! I would never lease a Bimmer larger than this.

You should compare this to to a fully loaded camry or accord. To see if the price is worth it.

optimus prime i mean, this is a more performance oriented car. 4.5 sec 0-60 vs 5.8 secs. Given that the vast majority of camry and accord buyers opt for the slower engine under the hood , a $45k bmw m235i is out of the question. If youre buying the better performance engine, hopefully youre negotiating for a fully loaded one for no more than 36k...a 10k difference. My point is, the average camry / accord buyer would not cross shop into a $45k bmw “performance car”. Now , maybe an avalon shopper... since a fully loaded one can get into the mid 40k and avalon is more “luxury” over the camry.

Yes ! I own a 2019 C43 AMG tuned by Renn Tech 405 awhp 470 llb ft Fully modified find me on facebook deleted my Twitter and Instagram. I have tons of pics and videos Love the car over the M340I and the Q50 Redsport 400. Those were my 2 options I was considering before my beloved C43 AMG

that black one helps a bit with ugly design but with those wheels turned the front fenders show how bad is it when bonnet is short due to front wheel drive (although cabin space is much better)

Good review, what is the point of making smaller car with higher price! I thought they make them smaller to be more affordable.

It’s a nice looking car, but as much as I think they tried to make it look like a slightly smaller 3 series sedan, the proportions are just off a little. And while it seems like a nice enough car, and 300 hp for a small sedan is pretty good, there’s just no way it’s worth $51K. Nice review though, Joe!

Hopefully he'll do that blue M8 in the back there.

I'd actually be more impressed if they left it fwd, dropped alot of weight(maybe 600lbs) and it was easier to maintain outside warranty, also add a nice 6 speed.

Also drop the price by a great deal.

I mean I got my kia Optoma SE black on black with a moon roof apple/android car play. Headed seats/steering wheel for 21k brand new. Might not have 300hp but its a sharp looking car that reliable, good on gas and affordable with a 10yr warranty.

I've watched a ton of vids on this car, and this is the very first one that DID NOT have heated seats. I don't know how, but your guys there somehow botched the order on this one, and deleted that option. Ditto the HUD. I guess they nixed the Premium Package.

My M235i has heated seats and a lot more fitted standard than this car. Maybe UK spec is better and for less than $50k new on the road. Only thing I didn't ask for was the panoramic roof.

Cool looking car , great job!! But for 50,000 I was expecting more on the interior!! Come on BMW you can do better!! The body style is nice inside and out!!

The BMW logo is supposed to be a propellor with a blue sky behind it.

It's actually not a ZF transmission, those are for rear wheel drive models. This has a Aisin unit, similar to the ones in front wheel drive Toyota. But BMW did their own programming and I gotta say Toyota should learn something from them.
