That's correct. Dialogue that you've already seen can be sped through a lot quicker. But anything you HAVEN'T read, they force you to read it at THEIR pace, similar to Origami King.

Guys you can buy a badge for one coin to have the gamecube ost playing (it costs zero bp to equip)

Exactly! I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed that. It also sucks that you can't use the B button to skip over dialogue faster like in the OG TTYD and PM64. You can't even go back to the previous text boxes anymore, which is such a weird design choice IMO.

Paper Mario was called Originally Mario Story in Japan because the story was told as a story book that you see at the opening and because the story was divided into To Chapters. The same was with this game. And a little with Super Paper Mario. So it was never about the paper part

Ya, Nintendo tried to take the physical paper part too far. Like, its neat and cool the first time but it gets old when literally everything for multiple games is just literally paper. The paper aesthetic of the original TTYD I think hit a good balance.

The one thing that I'm a little bit disappointed for is the fact that they didn't add some sort of side mode where you could play as Luigi in his quest for the Marvelous Compass during the game's events. you seem to miss the point of Luigi’s stories lmao. They sound purposely absurd and heroic of Luigi because it’s meant to be played off like he’s making shit up as he goes. The actual adventure probably wasn’t nearly as exciting as how he described it. Adding in that side adventure would miss the point of the humour of his stories completely

My only two problems with this remake is that the combat feels more sluggish than the original at 30fps and I genuinely don't like the UI of the remake. For example, the battle screen. In the original the UI looked charming but in the remake, the battle screen looks so bland and like it's from a mobile game.

It should have been 60 FPS...

oh! theres a badge for the old sounds? Hell yeah! Thats all that matters as far as music goes. having both options solves every issue anyone can have with it. Absolute W scenario.

@@bearzdlc2172 As a composer, I can very confidently say that the music is definitely not a downgrade. You might not like it as much, which is fine. But I absolutely love the new soundtrack! So it is subjective, and they give you the option to listen to the old soundtrack. So again, there’s no need to fuss about anything

As a newer Paper Mario fan who didn’t really like Origami King that much, I absolutely love this game. Origami King was my first Paper Mario game, and since then, I went back and played a few hours of Paper Mario 64, and I absolutely love what I played. I haven’t gotten very far in TTYD, but I love it so far. I can see why Paper Mario fans love this game so much

I wish they didn't make it so that you have to wait for star power to fill up before you can choose a battle command

30fps is a meh thing for me, the game lools beautiful. However things like the Battle Transitions look a little choppy. What I really love is how the game adjusts many things but keeps it the original. The remake fixes many flaws especially the backtracking in natural ways like the spring in the tree or new pipes

As someone who never got to play this game until now, has me excited as I heard great things about the Thousand Year Door.

I hate this remake for various reasons, the biggest one being how awkward and off it feels to pull off super guards and the power bounce both consistently. the frame rate ruined both of those aspects horribly imo. the frame rate makes it too frustrating for me to enjoy the battle system compared to the original which I'd much rather play on you know what in 2k with the you know what texture pack, not the most ideal experience but definitely far superior I'd argue, especially if you have a powerful enough setup to do it with.

Regarding the music, I feel that the ost isn´t really better nor worse, just different. As Paper Mario passed to a lot of music styles since Super, I feel understandable the fact that they made other takes regarding the music. Some osts may make it better, other worse, and its interesting to hear them and make our own conclusion. Im sticking the Remake for most of it, although I obviously prefer some ost of the OG. And regarding that most people hate it; I disagree, is just that the people who didnt like it can be really vocal about it. Our brain can be a mf, and make for us easier to spot a negative comment over 10 positives. And knowing that some people who are disconformed with that can jump to comment to comment expresing their discomfort, you eventually realize that the amount of people is not that big.

It’s not a “majority consensus” like he’s making it out to be. It’s just a vocal minority of whiny fans. I thought the original soundtrack was largely just… okay. It existed, but nothing stood out to me except for the Rogueport and battle themes. Now that isn’t the case for me. It was also primarily redone by Thousand-Year Door’s original main composer, Yoshito Sekigawa.

While I do think the game itself is great (first time TTYD player here), I’m still sad that it had to come at the cost of the Mario and Luigi series dying. Nintendo went on record saying they don’t want two concurrent Mario RPG series happening at once. While I’m happy this edict was seemingly walked back, now my favorite of the Mario RPG series might not come back anytime soon.

Hey it's been awhile as for this first impression I had a feeling you would like what you see so far can't wait to see your full review of it heard it had a few controversies here and there but that shouldn't be a deal breaker for you if you don't really care for that side of the argument Have fun there's a real reason why many called this a Treasure from the Start.

My first time playing ttyd and it’s eye opening how much better it is than TOK imo. Even as a jrpg it feels way ahead of its time It’s simple yet there’s depth to the combat

I played TTYD when it came out in 2004 and haven’t touched it since, so maybe I just don’t remember the music that clearly, but I’m loving the new versions

The performance being cut in half was a non-issue for me. I don't notice a difference and the performance of the game is buttery smooth. If anything, this might be my preferred way to play the game going forward. As for music, the more I listen to it, the more I like it. The battle theme is different for each chapter you explore and some of the boss themes are fantastic. I just got done beating Chapter 5 last night and the boss music was excellent! Might try and beat the game today. About to begin Chapter 6!

Imagine if the "Switch 2 version" of the game will be playable at 4K but with the frame rate still locked at 30fps. 😂

Honestly it probably would be. Most games on the PS5 and Series X struggle to hit 4K, and even those don’t hit 60fps.

In the event that this is the case, I sincerely hope that they will implement two modes (performance and fidelity) for the majority of the games, similar to the approach taken by the ninth console generation. It should be at the player's discretion to prioritize exceptional graphics or a higher frame rate.

@@PianistTanooki In addition, a 1080p resolution alone would provide at least a slight improvement for games such as Odyssey, TotK and this game, as they currently operate at 900p or use dynamic resolution. So even then, the resolution would receive a small upgrade.

The only time i notice 30 FPS is in certain paperflipping cutscenes. In the gameplay not so much! So it doesnt bother at all. I defeated Lohgard now. And I must say music is hit and miss. Some are worse some are better of the new ones. Overall a great game though!

I beat paper Mario 64 recently that game still holds up pretty well too

So far, it's looking good. This might be the first Paper Mario game I play through.

What would you say to the Mario fans who didn't grow up with this game or messed out on the GameCube era and couldn't play it back then?

I know this is a hot take but so far besides Boggly Woods, the Puni Tree, and Glitzville, I prefer the music in the remake, feels super upbeat, I was not expecting that :D My favorite partners in TTYD are Yoshi and Koops :)

What you're saying isn't a hot take actually lol. I'm not sure where Demeech is getting that the general consensus is that most do not like the remixed soundtrack. From what I've seen, it's the opposite in fact. I saw only a few that don't like the remixed OST. So as of right now, he's actually on the minority side, not the general consensus side.

Your eyes get used to it after awhile playing in 30fps. If you have the capacity to play the gamecube version right after, you’ll immediately notice the 60fps compared to 30fps. I certainly did.

Best-looking Switch game? Come on. It's a great remake, but it's still just Paper Mario.

Wanted to love it but the 30 frames and dialogue is just slower now. I barely got to hooktail and I just gave up with the chopping on frames. Popped in cube and all of a sudden the game was good again.

I notice it, it’s just not a big deal for me when playing the game. This isn’t Mario Kart or a Super Mario game where 60fps is crucial. It’s only really noticeable when scrolling through areas really fast with Mini Yoshi. I’d prefer it at 60, but 30 isn’t a dealbreaker for me.
