"Is the Metatron EVIL?" Me, an intellectual: Yes.

The Metatron might reply "You, an intellectual?": given unless he wants something from any of us, his behaviour seems both callous and belittling. However, on a serious note, I very much doubt Neil Gaiman will let the Metatron be straightforwardly evil - we just don't understand Metatron yet, and equally, the Metatron doesn't understand Aziraphale & Crowley yet (or, indeed, God's ineffable plan). The Metatron has a journey to go on too.

I think the Metatron’s line “for it to happen twice make it look like there is some kind of institutional problem” is foreshadowing his motivation to break up Aziraphale and Crowley. If I remember right, the Metatron only comes AFTER Gabriel and Beelzebub leave. He comes to insure that Azi and Crowley don’t leave too and make it “look like an institutional problem”. He’ll do anything to maintain heavens appearance and make sure heaven doesn’t fall apart.

Yes, Yes, Yes! I do think Metatron is more than just the dutiful CEO of the villain Heaven. This is personal between Metatron and Crowley, but Crowley doesn't seem to know it. We know Crowley's memory of what happened at the Fall is flawed. I suspect Metatron remembers very well what happened and intensely despises Crowley for it. Yet, the worst that Metatron actually said about Crowley is "Always asking damn fool questions, too". I suspect Metatron did something back then that he's covering it up, but Crowley, at one time knew it, or started asking "damn fool questions" about it.

Another thing that makes me think it's personal for Metatron against Crowley is that Metatron is particularly interested in knowing if Crowley recognizes him. Perhaps from what happened at the Fall. Apparently Crowley doesn't remember that, just Gabriel's trial, so if Metatron is concerned about Crowley's memory of the Fall, he's off the hook, for now.

I felt like the Metatron was worried about whether Crowley would convince Aziraphale to stay and when he didn't the Metatron felt compelled to put Crowley down more - go his own way, damn foot questions - to emphasize to Aziraphale how much they don't need him and he's just a problem (although I don't think the Metatron realized that kind of manipulation would never work).

I have really enjoyed your insights. I agree with almost everything, except saying that the angels didn't recognize his human form - it wasn't the form, they didn't recognize him at all. The floating head looked just like his human form. Crowley recognized him and he knew Crowley did, and once Crowley did then Aziraphale did, it wasn't until Aziraphale mentioned the Metatron that the other angels reacted. And that's why I think the Metatron really wanted to get rid of Crowley - Crowley saw things that others didn't and helped Aziraphale to see them too. Just like in 1800's Scotland Crowley led Aziraphale to the truth without outright saying it. That, coupled with their increased power when combined, is what he was scared of. I also think the Metatron would have done something with Crowley had he come to heaven - wiped his memory or took away his power, something to weaken him. That would fit with his manipulation - make Aziraphale think Crowley would be the same, yet he wouldn't be.

I haven’t been able to find out what that could mean symbolically yet, but it’s surely not random. The other motif is a circle with a point (dot) in it, which is included in the “runes” in heaven, and is old af. Often means ‘sun’. His overcoat has a beige tartan lining too, but it seems very plain (just thin stripes). I’ve got some dodgy screen shots, which I can post on dc if I get motivated

Another great analysis! You always make me think. I do think the Metatron has his own agenda. Separating Crowley and Aziraphale is part of that. They are more powerful together. He has more control if they are apart. He is definitely using Crowley to manipulate Aziraphale. I think God is sitting back and just watching what happens right now. I agree that the problem is heaven and hell. It's like Crowley says they are toxic. What happens to earth and humans is just a game to win. Any angels and demons we have seen who have any power just want more power. The exception is Gabriel and Beelzebub in season 2 but neither of them really care about anything but getting what they want. Where Crowely and Aziraphale do care about everyone and everything. I did notice the Metatron sucking on something and it seemed weird to me. I had not thought that it could be so he is telling the truth about ingesting things. What you said about the clothes made me realise something: by their mentalities and their clothes, Crowley, Aziraphale and Metatron seem to be mirroring Sherlock Holmes, Watson and Moriarty. Aziraphale is a simple person, he's smart but not a genius and he's mostly defined by his kindness. Plus, he's the narrator of the Edimburgh scene, like Watson is in the novels. Crowley is a really smart guy, he understands the world very well and he's really honest and kind, despite pretending to be mean and tricky. Also, his clothing is not particularly stylish, he's got long hair and that makes him similar to Holmes. Metatron is the complete opposite. He's well-dressed, well-mannered (at least, he seems to be) but this facade hides a cold and calculating psychopath who only wants things to go according to the plan. The only question is: what does he want? Is he the voice of God, the dogmatic servant willing to do anything to follow what he thinks is the Divine Plan or is he just trying to achieve his own goals and become the Master, especially in a show filled with DW references?

There is this book series written by a polish author about angels and demons and a war brewing (though admittedly much less about Earth or humans). The premise is God has died and the highest archangels (Gabriel, Michael and Raphael) - and seraphs, though in the book seraphs are madness incarnate - are trying their best not to let anyone in Heaven nor Hell find out. The thing is, none of them have been created to handle the responsibilities this entails or be capable of ruling anything so the universe is literally falling apart at seams and slowly decaying. There is of course SO much more to the series than just this but this is the point I wanted to make. It does feel like Metatron COULD be trying his darned best to cover the fact that God isn't exactly interested or present anymore and since he was not made for it, he's having a diffuculty running the ship. You know? By the way, if the book sounds interesting to you, it's Siewca Wiatru by Maja Lidia Kossakowska (and Zbieracz Burz - the further books in series). I have zero idea if there are translations but I heavily hope there are because the books are GREAT. Angels aren't soft, sweet and good, they curse, smoke, keep friendships with demons (Asmodeus is an artsy guy, lemme tell you) and the war is very rough. There are thrones, mad seraphs and many other hosts and the main character is an outcast-by-design, a dude who never asked to be what he is and belongs nowhere. Siewca Wiatru means Sower of Wind and Zbieracz Burz means Reaper of Whirlwind/Storms which is pretty much a play on the "For they sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind.”

Thank you for all of those amazing analysis ! About God, I think it's very hard to understand what's Her role in the story. She's depicted as a very mysterious character, playing an ineffable game of Her own device (and just smiling). We've seen Her interreact with other living beings before (twice) so we know She wasn't always "absent" : First time in the Garden (She asks Aziraphale about his sword) and a second time when She talks to Job What we get out of this two apparitions is that : 1.Either She didn't know about Aziraphale giving his sword to humans (seems pretty unlikely to me) but somehow kew it was missing or She knew everything but just decided to ask him anyway (Why ? Was that a warning, like "I saw what you did, I see _everything_ " ? Was it just to see how he would respond ? Did she do it for fun ? Is it just ineffable?..) 2. -She made a bet with Satan, She comunicated with Satan and She just let demons ruin Her favorite human's entiere life to see which one of Satan or Her had won a bet they made (And again, why ? What kinda game is She playing ?) -Also, She's very proud of whales (And there's probably a lot more to say but I suck at this) From what we've seen of Her, She's a very complex character, who seems to be doing whatever she wants. She isn't pictured as "Good", She makes some rules (like "you won't eat the apple from *this* tree I've put in the middle of the garden"), punishes people (humans, rebelious angels), appears to a human (her favorite human She let suffer purposely) to talk (more like brag) about whales, She doesn't really answer questions, and is acltually the one asking questions in the scene with Job. She also created the dinosaur fosils as an elaborate prank (I'm telling you it's ineffable) I would also like to say that in the book, in the end, after they stopped the Armageddon, Crowley says something very interesting. He says that if God can create a universe in 6 days, She had to be able to prevent any rebellion, which means She _let it_ happen purposely, he also says that it's weird how God just put a forbidden tree in the middle of the Garden, when She could have just made it way more difficult for anyone to go near that tree, and that it must have been part of Her plan. Crowley end up saying that everythig (like really everything) could be part of God's ineffable plan ; a test She would have made up to see if what She had created was working (Crowley ends up looking for a word to qualifie God's plan and it's Death themself who suggest him the word "ineffable", and right after Crowley and Aziraphale forget what they were talking about) That's just random thougts that I'm throwing here, sorry if it doesn't make any sense (or if I write like a 2 years old, english isn't my first language, so I'm doing my best, and it's not brillant)

I guess I like to keep it simple… at first. The Metaron is not mentioned much in the Bible but one of his descriptions is the scribe of god, recording the good and evil things people do (I think). So if he is the scribe of god, then he would be the closest being to god. I’m pretty sure he knew Crowley would never go and only said that to manipulate Aziraphale into returning to heaven. I also think he has no intention of giving Aziraphale responsibility for the second coming. And his entire purpose to get Aziraphale back to heaven and separate him from Crowley was because together they were too powerful. They could possibly have the power to cripple both heaven and hell. If god’s absent then it’s the Metatron’s job to maintain the “institutions “. I might be reading something into his expression in the elevator, but he looked very slightly relieved in the look he gave Aziraphale. Aziraphale’s return to assume the role of Gabriel, it will infuriate the other archangels and many others, I assume. It may become completely chaotic. Providing a way, I don’t know how, for Crowley and Aziraphale to prevent the second coming and allowing them to escape together. I often wonder, while watching GO, whether or not god is perfectly aware of everything that is going on and just doesn’t give a shit or if she is truly absent which would allow the Metatron to do what he must to prevent their “instutional problem”. So does that mean he is inherently evil or being manipulative because he believes he has to. Of course I think he’s evil whenever I think about those last 15 minutes. But is he?

The Metatron TOTALLY swiped a "travel sweet" out of Crowley's car.😋 Kinda makes you wonder how long he was lingering outside (maybe looking through the bookshop's windows?) before heading off to the coffee shop.🤔 I think God is presently giving the Metatron enough rope to hang himself - he has gotten WAY above his station (supposedly the celestial scribe to the Book of Life, along with being allowed to be in God's presence) and is drunk with power. And I agree with your earlier video - he will end up being defeated, because he has no concept of love, especially of the love between an angel and a demon.💞

One thing about the Metatron that sticks out to me is that he seems... very knowledgeable and insightful about things and people. I don't know if this was meant to be his first visit to Earth, but if it was, his ability to adapt would have to be extremely impressive (contrast his visit with Muriel's complete ignorance or even Gabriel's lack of awareness after having been seen on Earth many times over the years). The Metatron shows up on Earth and immediately orders a coffee with almond syrup, and straight-up tells Nina, of course no one chooses death. So "predictable." He also seems to know what makes Aziraphale and Crowley tick, and uses those things to his advantage. He knows how to look normal and fit in with people, at least well enough at the surface level. We know angels aren't meant to be omnipotent --- otherwise, Crowley and Aziraphale wouldn't have been able to get away with their arrangement for so many years. But it makes me wonder exactly how much the Metatron has seen and how much he knows. Because for him to be as successful at manipulation as he is I think really requires him to have a certain amount of knowledge and wisdom that most angels and demons simply do not. It also requires him to have an understanding of Aziraphale and Crowley and their relationship that others do not. Aziraphale understands as of the end of season 1 that the "great plan" and God's "ineffable plan" are not necessarily the same. He knows none of the other angels actually know what God's plan is, meaning he has been able to keep his faith intact despite his ability to acknowledge Heaven's problems. And I think, because the Metatron casts himself as God's representative, Aziraphale is then tempted to give the Metatron the benefit of the doubt or at least believe he may know more of what's going on than anyone else does. I'm not convinced though that he does. I don't think God is talking to the Metatron either, and he's either just doing what he wants or what he believes God would want.

Yes, this. How much the Metatron seems to know about A & C and *exactly* how to manipulate them make me highly uncomfortable. Heck, he seems to understand human, angel, and demon nature better than the Beings who've spend 6,000 years on Earth among humans. He definitely has an agenda. I'm just hoping that with all his devious expertise he also makes the mistake of underestimating A & C in a major way that causes his downfall.

Would Crowley be able to tell if the Metatron breeched the confines of his beloved vehicle? So much has to happen in s3. It will be an interesting watch for sure. I think it’s a stretch to think he might have got the sweet from the Bentley. He is a powerful Angel; he could easily create something out of nothing. But I didn’t even notice he was sucking on anything until sendarya suggested it. I have watched this so many times (it’s the one thing that makes me happy, except the last 15 minutes of S2, while coping with an emotional roller coaster I’ve been on post COVID which was such a mild case I didn’t believe I was positive!). So I very much appreciate what careful analysis happens here. I was just thinking that sweets pop up in quite a few places… like the bottom of the shaft where the nuclear reactor had been… or whatever it was that was missing. Probably all a coincidence but given the clever writing Neil has done, you never know.

I'm very interested to see an analysis add comprehensive list of all the lies Aziraphale tells well believing himself to be innocent and on the side of heaven. I have a feeling he wraps up more than Crowley. I love that as soon as you said fresh from the lift in reference to where he could have gotten a hard candy, I know exactly where this convo was going. Thank you for all the beautiful content. Even if it takes a little bit for me to keep up. I was so glad that in an earlier video you pointed out that this is a special time for a fandom, and that we will look back on it favorably in the future. It is so easy to get caught up in impatience. And that's where I find myself often, so thank you for making this in between seasons not only tolerable but special.. I agree I hope prime doesn't dump the whole season at once, what makes episodes available gradually. Yet even if they are available all at the same time I will watch on whatever schedule the fandom decides. We should do this together.

The truth isn't the same as absolute clarity - in a sense, the Metatron's phrasing of the truth is the kind of phrasing you want to avoid using on a genie. While the demons in general, and, to an extent, Crowley, *know* they are evil - because, well, they're fallen, right? That's the logic! Gotta be evil, they're in Hell! - the angels very much believe they couldn't be evil, cause they're the Good Guys! How could they possibly be bad? Most on either side would find Crowley and Aziraphale's Shades of Grey *inconceivable*. Some people are so firm in their belief that they're in the right, that anything which opposes them must, therefore, be bad. Some people are so stuck in this position that, much like a certain brand of Evangelicals, they loose sight at what The Point was. The Metatron thinks he knows what he should be doing, he's very convinced of it. What I find interesting, both in the novel, S1, and the run-up to S3, is that they all seem to forget a little thing written in the Acts of the Apostles; where Jesus tells the apostles, “It is not yours to know the times or the moments, which the Father has set by his own authority." Generally, the belief is that ONLY God knows the time or the place of the Second Coming. The Apocalypse was averted. Things end up following the Ineffable Plan after all - and whatever that is, the Metatron definitely doesn't know. I hope Aziraphale is reminded of that.

For me, it's really significant that Crowley is the first one to recognise the Metatron in the bookshop, but for some reason, doesn't seem to be wary of him or suspicious. He even kind if gives Aziraphale the green light to go outside for his little chat with the Metatron 'After all, this day can't get any weirder!' Yet, there is that awful look Metatron gives Crowley on his way out, that suggests some bad past history between them, supported by his later comment to Aziraphale : 'Always did want to go his own way.' I think the offer to make Crowley an angel again is false: he knew Crowley would turn it down, and I think his motive is certainly to split up Crowley and Aziraphale. So why, isn't Crowley more suspicious of him? He's seen Gabriel's trial, and how ruthless the Metatron has been, having Gabriel's memory wiped. So why is he OK with his angel going off for a private chat with the Metatron? Any thoughts? Sorry you had a nasty accident - why do these things happen? Must be ineffable. Glad you're on the mend now, and thanks for this video - as ever, full of neat insights, and excellent questions!

The travel sweets do look quite different from the sherbet lemons of season 1 but maybe they still count as sherbet lemons? I can't be sure if it was Adam who planted one in the Metatron's pocket - although Neil and Terry came up with the title for a Good Omens book sequel - "668: The Neighbor of the Beast" - so it's plausible that Adam has a part to play in the sequel (and therefore in season 3). That would be lovely to come full circle to the end of the series with a sherbet lemon!

@@Sendarya The most challenging part of theorizing for this show is that always, lurking somewhere, is an omnipotent, omniscient being who can do whatever they want, whenever they want, independent from all the known, and unknown characters, their actions and situations. So the answer to "Who played the song in the Bentley, and why?" Could be Crowley ( as a romantic plan for Aziraphale), the Bentley (as a romantic nod to Crowley and Aziraphale, or a sympathetic question to Crowley, or an attempt to comfort a devastated Crowley), Aziraphale ( as a message to Crowley, for comfort, or from devastation, or to say "We're still US!), the Metatron (because he's a cruel bastard, twisting the knife in the demon he just scowled at; or is he sympathetic to the pain, despite all evidence to the contrary?), an accidental play (from either Crowley or Aziraphale's prior radio usage in the car), or is it God (working in mysterious ways and not telling anybody anything)!

I was really looking forward to this video because my vision of the Metatron is/was completely different. I still don't know if I changed my mind but your video makes me think a lot. For me, the Metatron was misjudged and there are so many questions about him. First thing: what the hell is he doing on Earth? Why would he save Aziraphale? And more importantly, why would he propose Aziraphale to be the next Supreme Archangel? Azi is naive, yes but I'm sure he is not the most naive of all the angels. So why him? And the second thing that I found odd is his dark glance at Crowley. Alright, he doesn't seem to like him but why would he show that at that moment? Was it for the audience to understand his feelings about the demon, or was it a sort of a threat/warning to Crowley, or a hiding message? When no angels could guess who he was, he directly asked Crowley, and the only demon in the room was the only one who got the answer. WTF? Yes, he saw his big head a few minutes ago in Heaven but just like Muriel and Saraquiel. So why Crowley was the only one who recognized him? And Aziraphale was the second who guessed but we know that the last time he saw the Metatron was 4 years ago, while the other angels saw him at Gabriel's trial. Yes, I have many questions. But in the facts, the Metatron never did anything bad or wrong. Yes in season 1 he followed the Great Plan and thought just like the other angels (or demons) that the Great must happen to win it. But in season two, when we are looking at the facts: he saved Azirphale! And he offered the opportunity to restore Crowley to his full angelic status. And after the discussion, he says to Aziraphale "You don't have to answer now, take all the time you need". Time, Aziraphale didn't really use. As you said in your video, it could be a manipulation, yes. But I don't see where it's not a choice. He offered him an opportunity. He didn't force him to say yes, it was a conversation. He needed to be persuasive, of course. He came to Earth for that proposal. But I can't see where he threatened him. It was just a discussion. I'm not saying he didn't manipulate Azi or that he is telling the truth. I'm just saying that I can't see any prooves of any kind of pure manipulation. It can be what the Metatron really thinks. He can be honest. (I'm not saying he is). But your argument about Britishisms is really interesting. Because he really looks like Aziraphale when he uses those words and the fact that we never see him pronounce those words before means something. Thank you for your videos it's always amazing. It made me realise so many things so thank you for that! And I'm so sorry for your injury I hope it's ok now! (Sorry for my english I hope you understood what I meant)

I love these deep dive analyses! Has anyone done one on Michael’s odd behaviour in season 2? When Uriel is annotating Muriel’s report with comments like “the traitor” and “the demon”, Michael seems annoyed/frustrated in a different way than they were frustrated with Uriel about who’s in charge. Additionally, when Muriel says “I didn’t listen, they said it was private!” Michael has a moment of leaning back, bouncing both fists lightly on the table and *smiling* in a way that doesn’t feel like a cover to annoyance. Why would Michael care if Muriel knew they were annoyed at them? I just have trouble believing that smile was meant as some kind of patronizing tolerance of Muriel…it seems almost like relief to me.

The Bentley must be warded to protect him from angels so he sleeps in it. If I'm right, how does the Metatron reach in and get a travel sweet from inside a demon's car? Derek Jacobi appeared many years ago in a film called Mr Pye where his character grew demon horns, so he has technically been on the 'other side'. That film is here on YT. Great analysis! I’m interested in why the Metatron says that Aziraphale is a leader, is honest, and doesn’t just tell people what they want to hear. These are all patently false. Aziraphale is not leading anybody, and although he’s developed enough skepticism to recognize the problems with Heaven, it caused him to become a loner - he has not recruited anybody to share his view. He’s not honest - we’ve been observing his lies and evasions since the Garden of Eden, when he failed to answer a direct question from God about the sword. And he does largely tell people - at least his superiors in Heaven - what they want to hear. So why does the Metatron describe him in those terms while trying to recruit him? Is it precisely because those are false? Maybe the Metatron needs a follower in the supreme archangel position, not a leader, so he’ll do what he’s told? Perhaps he needs someone comfortable with dishonesty and telling people what they want to hear in order to be able to accomplish something needed for the Second Coming, perhaps something surreptitious?

THIS! 👍 This is why I feel that Aziraphale would not trust the Metatron or his offer, because Aziraphale would have no illusions about those things, and the Metatron seems to be too clever about Az to believe those things. It still could be that t M went out of his way to make the "ingested things" truthful: maybe there was an important reason not to lie to Az in front of Muriel/in front of Crowley/in his home/in the angelic embassy?

Another lovely video that I'm super grateful for and also, not to disagree with your theory, I was wondering if this is the Metatron's first visit to Earth as you put it, how did he know how the system works? I mean to stand in line for the coffee and order and everything? Why couldn't he just miracle it and as long as we're talking about standing in line, that loaded look he throws, is it about checking what's going in the bookshop?

One question on my mind is “why did god not narrate the second season?” It could entirely be because the actor could not be in it for whatever reason but I think there is something more to it… I have this feeling that maybe the events of season 2 were never supposed to happen and the second coming is not part of the plan. Maybe this is new to god and something that she has not planned? I have no idea but I could be entirely wrong 😅 What do you think?

Though you make a good point that the Metatron shares a lot of similarities with other characters, both he and Gabriel being condescending, there is another difference. Gabriel is blunt about his motives. And he’s openly hostile. The metatron on the other hand is more sneaky about his motives. He comes across as accepting, the only one who appears to accept Aziraphale’s relationship with Crowley but, is manipulative once you analyze it. I do hope that The Metatron stays a villain. It could point out not everyone can change. And I think the Metatron would be the type who pretends to carry out God’s word but, is carrying out their own plans.

Okay so for a little while I thought maybe he was originally Enoch , and maybe he wanted the war because he could not be in the part of heaven souls go to when we die. So he was there dealing with annoying angels not hearing much from God, and not able to reconnect with his family. That made me a bit sad for him and not completely hate him. Neil said he was not ever a human though, so nope he is just evil and ruins everything.

Waited for something like this for a long time. So. What I found marvellously interesting in Metatron is how "academically" well presented is. I mean, it is like Neil took a writing book, went to the "evil characters page" and used the last 20 minutes of s2 to follow all the steps. But. Evil is just an archetype, not a role. He occupies a more complex niche, role. For Crowley, it is exactly an antagonist. It is clearly stated, plus, Crowley has 2 goals (save humanity, and live peacefully): Metatron is challenging both. Clearly stated by how they look at each other. Crowley must explain to us why he doesn't recognize anyone but Metatron when nobody recognises him. But for Aziraphale? At the moment, he is only partially an antagonist. Az's goals are: to save humanity, and change heaven. Metatron is giving him the possibility to do the second one (let's for a moment forget about the threat, which is a problem just for his relationship with Crowley). So, Aziraphale is going along with Metatron as far as he can. And until the situation breaks, as it happened with Heaven in the past, Metatron will only be partially an antagonist. Let's also consider a fact. Metatron is the only angel who can use empathy (except for Az). It is absurd, but it is the reason why he can manipulate Az: he can understand him, or at least pretend. A dark kind of empathy, let's call as such. Az has a specific role: to protect humanity from the start, and it is something given by God herself. Are we sure that Metatron will thwart this aspect, or didn't consider it? Maybe, at the end of the day, we will know Neil fooled all of us and he was indeed the good guy.

Oh dear, I just had a terrible thought. What if an angel's memory can only be wiped if they're in heaven? That would give a very dark explanation to the Metatron's look of relief and Aziraphale's smile in the elevator. Season 3 could start with the Metatron introducing himself to Aziraphale and explaining his duties as a new angel. Aziraphale would happily commit the atrocious righteous acts in heaven's name, completely oblivious to the doubt and questioning that Crowley had inspired. Aziraphale would never remember Crowley before his fall, the look of wonder at his creations, and the utter heartbreak of it being a pointless 6000 year experiment. Thus, Aziraphale would never have any sympathy for Crowley, and given back his flaming sword, Aziraphale might even stab Crowley. Crowley, with pained breath, would lean forward for a last kiss, and forgive him. Aziraphale would then remember who he was and what he'd just done, but it was too late. It's always too late. Until Crowley's crank falls to the floor...

Would time just stop? (as we saw in season 1 at the airfield) Or could it rewind time, so that Azi gets his memory back before stabbing him and Crowley doesn't die? Can you PLEASE write this as a fic? I don't think that I could do it justice. ❤

@@clarestubbs9303 Well Crowley has used the crank to control time before, once to kick off the universe, and again to restart time. It hasn't been shown to have the ability to stop or reverse time, but you never know. Perhaps at the climax when Crowley is mortally wounded, when Aziraphale gets his memory back, he must choose between saving Crowley or going against god's plan and saving humanity. Perhaps jeebus is walking to the portal, and once he crosses it, the second coming will be unstoppable. I think, in that moment, Aziraphale would finally choose Crowley. The universe project would be wrapped up and shut down. The heavens, the earth, gone. The humans all raptured. The ineffable plan is over, but they are together, in an empty void. Then Crowley reveals "You know, I still have the plans to the universe, we could crank it up again." "A giant empty universe? What would be the point..." "It doesn't have to be empty." (Crowley resurrects that couple from the coffee shop) "That was a 2 Lazeri miracle..." (Aziraphale ponders this seriously) "When we combined powers to make the tiniest possible miracle, we made a 25 Lazeri miracle by accident..." "What if... we really try for a major miracle, one with all our heart for the love of this planet and it's people... We could certainly do better than 25 Lazeri... Maybe even... say... 8.1 billion Lazeri?" "That much miraculous energy flowing through us would destroy us..." "Have faith..." (takes his hand)

The Metatron, allegedly, is the voice of god. Yet, we (the viewers) only hear her in the voice overs. There is no indication that the Metatron is speaking on behalf of god or in her words. But, since she is playing the part of an omniscient narrator, I'm assuming she is "in the loop" of what everyone does, the Metatron included. No one has questioned the authority of the Metatron, but maybe we should. Maybe we should question whose interests he's protecting. It might not be god's. "Absolute power corrupts absolutely." What won't he do to get what he wants?

@@Sendarya Are not Crowley and Aziraphale the greater threats to Heaven and Hell? Neither Head Office could erase Crowley and Aziraphale from the Book of Life. Neither could discourage their allegiance to one another. Yet, in two brief appearances, the Metatron meddles to do just that. He fails to close the gateway in season 1, resulting in a discorporated Aziraphale whom Crowley mourns for dead. In his brief appearance at the end of season 2, the Metatron' finally succeeds in separating the two old friends by trickery. Why? Why is it important? What does the Metatron hope to gain? What is the Metatron's agenda? Is it the same as God's? if so, why did She tolerate all of Crowley and Aziraphale's shenanigans over the millennia? Gabriel's "leadership" was risible. He's the bad boss. But the Metatron? He's terrifying. He forcibly bends those he uses to his will. And I don't think it's the will of God.

I'm not saying the following is at all likely, but I do think this would be a twist worthy of the body swap reveal at the end of s1: The Metatron ends up being a flawed hero rather than a villain. He actually wants to stop the Second Coming. He does manipulate A, but it's because he was desperate to separate A and C and get A to heaven because a) some rogue archangels or angels and demons combined have seized power and somehow killed or silenced God, which is why no one has heard from her in eons b) He really does need A's intelligence, innocence, and integrity to fight them and protect earth and c) he has some partial knowledge or suspicion (maybe a unique-to-him ability to see possible futures?) that having them both in Heaven at the same time will somehow cause rather than prevent the Second Coming. For example, maybe it's critical that Crowley is on earth to...I don't know, lead an army? Protect humans?

My current theory on why Aziraphale would be needed for the Second Coming would be, in part, because of his understanding of prophecies. I mean, technically speaking, the antichrist never came and had his reign, which should have started off the events to lead up to the Second Coming in the Christian mythos. What if the Book of Life was mentioned in this series because edits need to be made to it, and history, in order to find a loophole that would allow them to kind of *force* the Second Coming. I mean, if it is following the idea of Christ returning, surely the only way they would be able to choose when that happens would be to somehow force it. Else they'd just go and ask Him to do it. Right?

Something just occurred to me in this vein and that is "the ineffability of the Pope". There's a lot of confusion and misinformation about what that really means and I don't think any theologian (not even the Catholic Church) can explain it satisfactorily. I wonder if that confusion and misinformation could also be attributed to Metatron. The Pope is Christ's representative on Earth and Metatron is the voice of God in Heaven...similar jobs. As a former Catholic, I had a lot of the same questions Good Omens raises. I came to the conclusion that there can be no right/wrong answers with them because they're always changing the rules anyway...usually to suit their needs at the time or to satisfy public trends and opinions.

Yes! It’s the system! In fact, the Metatron’s ability to be deceptive while telling the technical truth is a characteristic of Aziraphale. I mean every time he does it the audience comments on how terrible he is at lying, but he always misdirects the people he needs to, and the one time he outright lies, he’s actually pretty good at it. I think part of the resolution of all of this is going to be angels and demons finally “getting it.” That maybe God got something wrong in her design for angels and tried to make humans as a sort of blueprint for angels to follow in order to understand morality and free will, and Crowley has kind of got there… Aziraphale, and now Jim and Beelzebub are all close. God’s just off in the wings waiting for this idea to finally sink in.

Without even watching the video yes 100% he's pure freakin' evil. He orchestrated Crowley and Aziraphale's break up on purpose because he knew how desperate Aziraphale was to be accepted by the other angels and how much Crowley despised them and would never agree to return. I also think he knows they're soulmates and their love for each other makes any "magic" they do together incredibly powerful meaning they could probably stop the second coming if they worked together and concentrated on doing a miracle vs how they did things with the antichrist.
