Is the Leica M Monochrom 246 worth it? vs Leica M-P 240 feat. Guam Model Pauline Barola 4K

Ойын-сауық

Is the Leica M typ 246 Monochrom worth it? $500 more expensive than the M-P 240 ($7,000). Does the Leica M-P 240 converted to black and white come close to the Monochrom? I use both Monochrom and M-P 240 in the real world on a portrait photoshoot, with a bonus Leica M camera thrown in the mix.

The base ISO of the Type-240 is 200 while it is 320 for the Type-246, the monochrome. They have the similar sensors, except the Type-240 has the Bayer filter and different gain levels for the G/R/B channels. The ISO 'rating' is used to compensate for this. If the scene is lit at f/4, 1/100", and ISO 320, the monochrom will be using the sensor's base-level capture. The 240 will need to take the sensor's capture and boost it 2/3-stop to get the same image brightness, making up for all the color manipulations. The Type-240 b&w conversions add four color actions: 1. Bayer filter 2. G/R/B pixel gain adjustment [Since the red filter is "stronger" than the green, and the blue is stronger than both.] 3. Demosaic to color image 4. B&W conversion I think the real win with the monochrom happens at higher ISO. Color digital images tend to lose vibrancy and have noise, distinct from "grain", because of the color splotchy character. With the monochrom, it is more like grain, with tonal randomness only.

It is hard to really compare the Monochrome if you haven't shot true black and white film (a lot of it) in the past. The Monochrome is designed to give that look of a true film look. It really is impossible to get that look in a conversion from color to black and white unless someone just works in that consistently on a daily basis. I have shot film (medium format) since 79, and also shoot digital and have taken class upon class on how to convert and still don't think the look compares. The images I have seen from the Monochrome (from someone that shoots film) is much superior. So if you are a true black and white fan and are serving a black and white clientele that "get it", there is a huge difference. If you are just shooting black and white because you like it, don't understand light/shadows and everything else that goes along with black and white the price difference probably isn't worth it. Black and white is a lot more effective in landscape where sun/light is a factor. Photography is writing with light, not taking picture. (none of this is geared towards your review. Just in general) For the people who think the Fuji Xpro2 is as good of a camera, it might be; however if I was wanting a Ferrari, why would I buy a Ford dressed up like a Ferrari?

Just came across your review haphazardly and found this by far one of the most helpful reviews and comparisons. I was working with M6 Leicas for ages, added M9 and a M10P some months ago, complemented by Q2 - all of them mostly and still increasingly shot in B&W, hence a used Monochrome is quite appealing to me...thanks for your comparisons, I have the gut feeling that I at least should try a Monochrome and compare by shooting my own subjects. Really appreciate your work! Thanks!

This appeared in my feed, so I re-watched it, after a LONG time since the previous viewing. I have subscribed, this time. 🙂 Some time in 2018 or early 2019, I bought a pre-owned Type 246 Monochrome, during a time when my M10 was down, after a mishap. In my opinion, both the 246 Monochrom and original M10 remain relevant in 2024, a good “team” of 24MP cameras.

Do you have to adjust for the Konica M-Hexanon lens? I have a Konica 50mm f/2 M-Hexanon lens and I find that with my M-E I have to focus slightly past the subject with the rangefinder to get focus spot on. If I take the shot when the rangefinder shows focus, the image will slightly out of focus.

Yes, the Konica 90 F/2.8 lens would sometimes seem slightly off, I read somewhere that its the design of the lens, meaning the mount is somewhat off like 1 mm off, I dont remember where I read that, but only sometimes it wont be as sharp.

  • @EDHBlvd

Guam Photography yes Konica used same mount, but used a slightly different flange distance. If you set focus exactly with rangefinder it should be slightly off. Maybe you get some in focus because you actually didn’t have it bang on in rangefinder. For me after getting focus in rangefinder, I rotate lens slight further clockwise.

Sir , Nice Video. I would like to know if it is ok to compare Leica M Monochrom image to a High resolution B/W converted images ? Investing in Leica is almost like investing on a modern day mirrorless medium format systems.I mean like Comparing B/W converted 50MP sensor with CFA image to Leica true 24MP monochrom image. Because Due to high resolution though you loose some details to extra greens , you kind of retain necessary image quality due to resolution . Which would be acceptable. In your video I did find Leica Monochrome files are much better. Thank you :)

I think it is very comparable, I admit I don't have that much B&W film experience, but matched with Leica's glass, the resolution of the Leica M Monokrom images have a lot of resolution!

ekalavya k m all is shot wide open, it just shows different in Lightroom since there is no physical connection with body and lens, the Leica M cameras just estimate the F stop.

@@GuamPhotography hahaha I don't speak any English so we are at hand I liked the comparison but even if you try to have the same exposure, as there are variations in the diaphragm the sharpness changes, if you had used exactly the same values on both cameras the comparison would have been fairer ... but hey, you have and have used Leica, I have never done it :'c

Jack McKechnie are we about to get the highly original 'I can't afford a Leica' grumble? People can spend their cash on whatever they want. The Fuji is very good, but all of these are better, and true rangefinders too. Extremely expensive, but if you want the very best that's the price you have to pay.
