Is The ICONIC Seiko SKX Actually AWFUL ?
In today's episode of Federico Talks Watches I talk about the most iconic affordable dive watch. The Seiko SKX. The Seiko SKX is beloved by most watch collectors, but is it actually a good watch. Watch makes the Seiko SKX so special? Is it actually awful? Let me know what you think in the comments section below.

    The Seiko SKX being my first mechanical dive watch reminds me of my first car. It was pretty old, and not everyone thought very highly of it.. But it got me into driving. It got me into modifying. It taught me the basics of mechanics and also the fundamentals of driving etiquette. I kept that old 960 for years and had lots of fun with it. I hope my SKX serves me just as well. From a Volvo driver to a Seiko diver. Take care.

    I think this is one of the most balanced monographs about the pros and cons of the SKX that I've ever seen. Well done, Fed! I have two of them, a 007 and a 009. They are just okay -- not great, but not terrible either. Neither is very accurate (+30 to 45 seconds a day) and both have misaligned chapter rings. I also think it wears too small for my personal tastes on my 7-1/4 inch wrist and much prefer the Turtle. To me, the twenty-five year-old SKX is a watch in desperate need of an upgrade. The 7S26 was a decent budget automatic movement when it was introduced in the mid-90s, but today we should expect hacking and hand-winding, which the 4R36 easily provides in the Turtle, Samurai, and even some Seiko 5 watches. I don't mind the inexpensive jubilee bracelet but my Gen 2 Monster had solid end-links, and this too can be easily made for the SKX series if Seiko wishes to. I agree that the Watch Enthusiast world goes gaga over this watch, and a lot of that is overheated hype. It looks good, is ISO-certified, has killer lume, had a huge aftermarket market for accessories and modding, and costs around $200. That makes it a solid recommendation for anyone wishing to dip their toes in the world of automatic watches. But the competition from Orient and all the micro-brands are nipping at the SKX's heels and I for one would love to see them issue a Gen 2 with the improvements mentioned above.

    Dear god, thank you Fed! I’m so tired of people saying their watch runs +/- , “we’ll within COSC”, without putting the damn thing on a timegrapher. They are awful on a timegrapher. They’re erratic, have horrible positional variance and are unrefined and unadjusted.. And while we’re discussing it, no Seiko movement (not including the 8L series) compares to an ETA 2824. Saying that, I love them (skx) as well. But I don’t blindly love them. Some fanboys can’t be objective, which is unfortunate. Looking at my SKX right now. Holds its place next to my Submariner and other pieces.

    Garrett Hu lol. I hear ya. I don’t live my life to the second, but I do appreciate the work put into a movement that can stay within 5 seconds in any position. That’s superb watchmaking. It’s a wonderful art form and there’s nothing wrong with enjoying it. But a Seiko 7S, 4R, or 6R don’t fall in that category. And that’s fine. But no one should pretend it does. There’s a place for both. There’s also a place for a good quartz... that place is a lot smaller... but it’s there. 😂

    Positional variance is largely irrelevant if the on-wrist accuracy is acceptable....The advantage of many Seiko movements over ETAs apart from their initial lower price is their robustness and cheaper upkeep : they need servicing less often because they are a simpler, lower-beat movement. I'm not saying they are better, they're not but they do still have some advantages.

  • @DonaldPerley

    @DonaldPerley

    FWIW, my Seiko 5 (7s36) if worn full time on the wrist, has a pretty tight variance of well under 1 second/day. That is to say it may have a base error of +3 s/day, and over a week, each day will be between +2 and +4, mostly between +2.5 and +3.5. I'm sure it will go a bit faster or slower with position, but *on my wrist* the time in each position seems statistically pretty consistent. That said, the base error rate (averaged over a week or 2) has drifted over time, always towards the minus. When new, I was getting +4 seconds/day. Now, 6 months later, It's running about -5. I did have a few weeks in the middle with a blissful 0 +/-1. I don't know if it will keep drifting slower and slower from month to month or if it will eventually stabilize. Checking was done with the Watchcheck app, so each day's check is +/- the precision with which I can hit the button as the second hand crosses 12.

  • @jacc88888

    @jacc88888

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@DonaldPerley Yes, I would say that all of those variables are perfectly acceptable for everyday use. People harp on about the terrible positional discrepancies of the 7s26 but as many users prove this is largely irrelevant compared to on-wrist accuracy which as you, I, and many other owners can testify to is often remarkably consistent from day to day. Of course the 7s26 will never meet COSC standards but then again neither do the majority of Swiss watches.

    The SKX is a mid 90s recreational dive watch. It is a tool watch, that was designed to do a job. Seikos first 200m certified recreational diver. A watch that has been in production unchanged for over 20 years. Yes by today's standards it is dated. But that is like saying a Rolex Submariner 6538 is a bad watch, because on paper it is. It has a plastic crystal, a low beat 19800 bph movement, no crown guard, a bi-directional bezel, a jangly bracelet, no applied markers and is too small at 38mm. But it is the Rolex everyone wants. As for the Orient Ray being a better watch, the SKX has one of the best dials and hands for legibility. Taken from the 6309 which in turn was based on the Tuna dial. And it's Lumabrite lume is amazing.

    Exactly the point I was going to make. The only fault I can make is that it's a watch that Seiko should have upgraded over the years. Two decades ago this watch was a masterpiece for the price. Now there are lots of watches near the same price point that are far superior but as far as I'm concerned I still love the skx (jangly bracelet and all). Leave the case alone except add drilled lug holes, Change the movement to a 4R36 and that watch will be freaking awesome for another 20 years.

There were a few things I eventually did to improve it: 1) Change out the 7S26 movement into an NH36 with compatible crown to enable hand winding and hacking. 2) Regulate the movement with a timegrapher down to less than 10 sec per day through various positions. 3) Realign the dial, bezel insert and hands to make everything nice looking. 4) Add a couple of smooth seat belt NATO straps, Seiko rubber strap, etc. Bought most things from Aliexpress for less than $100 total and I have an almost perfect watch. Regardless, I know I'll be keeping my SKX009 forever.

    As to accuracy, it is not just a matter of attaining it across all six positions; it is a matter of attaining it with low variance (low error fluctuations) and high consistency across the lifespan of the time piece (in all six positions). This can only be achieved with precise, stable and high-quality components, structures, and materials that are way beyond the reach of the SKX's intended market.

    I've had and loved the SKX but after getting used to finer Swiss movements, I couldn't go back to it. However, I found the best of both worlds with the Seiko 7548. The watch looks almost identical to the SKX, but it has the 7548 quartz movement. This is no ordinary quartz movement, it has is a five jeweled movement with a full metal gear train that is serviceable and adjustable. It is accurate to almost 1/100 of a second per day. According to Spencer Klein, it's perhaps the best 3 hand quartz movement ever and has the same basic architecture as the famous 9F Grand Seiko movement. Plus, I like having quartz in a beater because it's tougher and I can always just pick it up and go when I need it. Best of both worlds, iconic looks of SKX but superb movement. Mine is a birth year and month watch so it's even more special to me.

    Federico, have you tried to have it adjusted? I have always wondered how a 7S26 or a 4R movement would perform if adjusted/regulated. My 4R PADI turtle is a watch I love but it is also very very unreliable when it comes to time keeping! It went from slow to fast to perfect ... It used to run faster the days I was physically active and slower at night but now it is slow regardless, 20s slow per day. All of that in 1 year of ownership. I would happily spend the money to get it assisted 5 positions but, if the adjustment is unstable, what is the point?

    Had my 009 a few years now and wear it mainly as a work watch (engineer for a bearings manufacturer) and while it runs probably around -20 seconds a day it gets proper beat up and in all honesty apart from a few small scratches to the bezel and a couple of marks on the crystal it's holding out pretty well for the price.

    My first "real" watch was an SKX I bought in the Navy. I purchased it in the ship's store and it was the same one the SEALs on board had. I dove in the Red Sea with it during Desert Storm. I beat it and wore it daily for years. After the service I went to college and some scumbag stole it from my room during a party. When I could , I replaced it, still have it, and wear it often. It is accurate, durable, good looking, and iconic. I have several "better" watches, but it still gets plenty of wrist time. It is scratched to hell, has never had a service, and I will not hesitate to wear it swimming or anywhere for that matter. Great watch.

    Maybe I've just been lucky but my SKX and my old 6309 (same movement) both keep great time, about + or - 5 secs a day. They weren't like that out of the box, had to regulate them myself but they're both steady on that worn or unworn. Great watches.

    Great video Federico - highlighting many of the reasons I love wearing my Orient Ray II. I think the 'intangibles' are why a lot of us love the watches we love. If I had the $, I'd probably own a Subby, but I'm not sure it'd put the same grin on my face when I put it on. There's something about having an everyday watch that you can love, but not have to overly 'care' about. I think the SKX and Orient fill that hole perfectly for many people - an the choice between them is a purely personal thing. That's with out the fact it's relatively low cost has probably gotten a heck of a lot people into watches who otherwise would have assumed that this had to be a rich mans hobby.

    For its price, it WAS great considering its look and ISO rated WR. I paid $170 for it in 2015 and it was my daily beater for almost 3 years before I started buying other watches. After experiencing COSC certified movements with hand winding, it's now become annoying. Only pro now is that my bezel is dead on aligned. That's it. I'm keeping it only because it's not worth selling and it was my first automatic. My timegrapher is showing wildly fluctuating times (from -50 to +63) with several ms beat errors in several positions, yet somehow that's close within the 7S26 specs believe it or not.

  • @otobotrecords

    Keep it, if it was your first auto! Either regulate it if you have a timegrapher (it's eeeeasy and what can you lose?) or better yet get a NH36, a new crown and stem and put it into that great case. --> re-bond with your first love;)

    @otobotrecords

    @@Anthonyvo It's NH36 for the day-date version. The trickiest part is putting back the hands (especially the seconds hand) onto the dial. Regarding the regulation, if it fluctuates and has big positional variance, your best bet is to experiment with tiny micro adjustments of the 2nd lever in both directions and see what the timegrapher says about fluctuations each time and how the beat errors change with the adjustments in one or the other direction. But really, a tiny bit goes a long way lol

    Enjoyable review! I get you. Re lack of positional precision with the 7s26 imo this is largely irrelevant as what matters is on-wrist accuracy. From what I've read and also from my own experience with the watches I own that house the 7s26 movement, on- wrist accuracy is fairly consistent - ie if it's +20s fast it tends to be around that most days (give or take a second or two). Also having positional differences in accuracy can of course ironically be an advantage as you can more easily speed or slow your watch down overnight when it's off the wrist by placing it in the most suitable position. However, one big issue with the SKX is you can't regulate it easily without disturbing the water resistant rubber gaskets.

    It’s not the greatest quality but it’s tough as old boots. The 007 with the red and blue is a nice splash of colour and it’s so cheap that it doesn’t matter if the quality isn’t 100%. I had the hardlex replaced by an SKX modder and he got everything lined up properly and regulated it. On the wrist over several days it runs +2 to 3 secs. He did all this for £30 too!

    If I'm not mistaken the Orient is not actually a dive watch like the SKX? That said no one uses watches much when they dive with bottles these days anyway. I agree with a lot of what you say. I have an SKX and its predecessor the 7002 and neither are world class time keepers. I have regulated one and felt it an achievement to get it within 15-30 seconds a day. That said my 7002 is 30 years old and has only been serviced twice. I suspect it would be very hard to make that claim with a lot of the more expensive watches? I love them both and agree they have a presence that's hard to deny. Great video, enjoyed watching.
