Is the Filipino Beauty Standard Too Strict?

We see this on soap operas, in movies, in billboards, in advertisements, on product packaging, all of our artistas look like this. Although not as widely known or publicized as the Korean Beauty standard, the Filipino standard is also notorious. Notorious for being a goal so far the average filipino will chase their whole life, but never ever catch. In order to be beautiful you need to be white... or atleast that's what Filipinos have been told their whole lives.

@@mutya_ There are quite a number of people who don't give a shit about skin blemishes, discoloration, and stuff. The reason why most people cannot embrace their imperfections is because people judge them for it so having such imperfections kills their self-confidence. If people just started looking past those imperfections I bet people would also stop giving a fuck about having them. Funny thing is, people who lack confidence because of such imperfections also judge those who have the same or worse cases, that's why they can't let themselves look the way they do because they're scared of being judged by people who have better skin.

I don’t think being whiter nowadays is a big thing, a lot of Filipinos appreciates Brown skin, more and more Filipinos online are famous for their morena beauty, I have a whiter skin naturally but I want to get a a little brown, don’t even use lotion coz of the little variety we have that is not whitening (maybe more non whitening in the future). I think in the near future flawless skin does not mean white but would just refer to a glowing and healthy skin.

Same as Fillipinos to be honest. Though ours place just as much emphasis on the physique. The more abs you get, the more positively you're seen and it's evident in the portrayal of non muscular characters in films (villains or plucky comic reliefs). I had my own struggle with this, to the point of developing a one sided rivalry with my best friend in high school because he was everything that was considered attractive (pale skin, tall, muscular, athletic) and basically had half the girls vying for him, while I was the opposite (skinny fat, tan, nerdy). I always felt inadequate next to him and developed a severe inferiority complex since I thought people saw me as nothing more than some guy who follows him around, causing me to try and desperately get what he had as well. It didn't work out. Thankfully, these days I've made peace with myself and what I was born with and I'm all the more happier now. It also helped me realised just how good I had it to be surrounded by so many loyal and supportive friends and teachers.

As a Hispanic woman I can honestly say that sadly this Beauty Standard is not just imposed onto, Filipinos, Koreans, Japanese, or Asians exclusively but to all people of color. In minority communities parental figures, peers, and the media usually hold this Beauty Standard to be true either consciously or subconsciously and in some shape or form help further this believe onto the younger generations. Videos such as these not only dare to challenge this ingrained Beauty Standard, but also help bring in a ray of hope, and awareness. I believe that awareness is a powerful thing, It is in awareness that we become far more cautious and conscientious as to what Ideas, standards, and believes we choose to hold dear and accept in ourselves as individuals.

Having fair skin, is an Asian thing, not only in the Philippines. Being conquered by the West didn't really helped. I have brown skin, I grew up being teased at home (endearingly as an excuse) being the only brown skinned among the siblings (my father was brown skinned) but for some reason, my color never really bothered me to the point of using whitening products. At the end of the day, it's human nature to desire what we don't have.

Saying colonization did not play a role is incorrect. Indeed, white skin as the beauty standard is not unique to the Philippines. It is common throughout Asia, but unlike countries, the Philippines is one of the top consumers. It is because most Filipinos are naturally brown due to our geographic location. In East Asian countries, white skin is the standard, but it is more common to see naturally white people there. Of course, brown people exist there as well. In other places in Asia with a fascination for white skin (despite brown skin being the average skin tone), they also have a history of colonialization.

Morena celebrities still lighten themselves and pageant contestants have historically been half caucasian. I don’t think it’s strict but it is judgemental and hypocritical.

When I was younger I never understood why Filipinos were obsessed with being white. As I grew up I slowly understood the stigma around being a darker skin tone. Growing up in a predominantly white neighbourhood taught me that I wasn’t what society would call “beautiful.” It took me a while but I finally learned to feel equal with my brown skin after years of feeling inferior to all my other white “prettier” friends just because the skin tone was a few shades darker.

I Disagree with the “too strict” statement. Filipinos are diversified people, chinita, meztisa, native , mixed are the common beauty ideals but it’s not that strict because people have different features which may be attractive to some and not to others , it actually depends on the point of view of the other person. “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” That’s the beauty ideal in Filipinos. If it was that too strict then i should be seeing more filipinas with lighter skin and getting surgeries, but no. Most of us don’t even care about skin colors. Yes there might be preferences to some but it depends on the person. It’s just the media telling people to be lighter but in actual it’s just what’s available to the market that we use. Papaya soaps for whitening may be meant for others to get lighter skin but to some it’s just the scent and the natural ingredient that they prefer. Yes some filipinos like to be lighter in complexion, but not all. So it’s not that strict. Attractiveness always depends on the person’s point of view. A chinita may be attractive to me but not to you, a mixed person may be attractive me but not to you, a native looking woman may be attractive to me and not to u. A morena may be attractive to me but not to you. A pretty face may be attractive to everyone but character is what’s more important to some. That’s the beauty ideal here in the Philippines it’s diversity. People are unique in different ways and that’s fine.

Light skin was favoured in the precolonial era, and when the Spanish arrived they simply exploited that culture. High nose bridge however is definitely new and came from the American era where the Philippines tried to imitate Hollywood at that time and purposely picked Filipinos of mixed ancestry or at least ones that looked “white” and this still prevails today, where Filipinos of mixed ancestry are put into leading roles while pure Filipinos are put into comedic roles.

When I became a child, my relatives would talk shit about my dark skin. "Negra" is how they called me. And there's me, loving to play outside in the sun because... ofc.. I was a child. Though, it became a real struggle for me. I always get compared to my pretty mestizang childhood friend. We were good friends, but I just hate how my relatives would always compare me to her. And the fact that I didn't have a mom figure who would fix how I looked when I was a kid didn't help. My mom was in abroad. My lola, on the other hand... would always declare war to those relatives who insulted me. HAHAHAHA LOVE YOU, GRANDMA.

It's the complete opposite in the UK and indeed Northern Europe. There because of the colder climate, people are desperate for the sun to return and/or to holiday in hotter climates to get a lovely tan. A few very hot days in the UK summer and half the population suddenly resemble a lobster with red sun burnt skin, the beaches around the UK are packed with people desperate to get a suntan. To most westerners filipinas are seen as gorgeous looking girls so I shouldn't worry about trying to be white in our eyes you are stunningly beautiful already. Believe me if you all came to the UK you would all have a queue a mile long of men wanting to date you.Men would fancy you all and girls would be so jealous of your tanned bodies.

I find this subject extremely interesting. I noticed that in most Asian countries the standard of beauty is determined immensely by your skin complexion. From what I understand, back hundreds of years ago, if you were of darker skin color you were considered of lower class because it was a sign that you worked outdoors, in rice fields and such. What I find interesting is that I am of Native American and Peruvian descent. Although my father was of darker, tan skin complexion, my mother’s skin color is very fair...light brown eyes and freckles. I took after my mother’s skin color. What I remember is my grandmother (my mom’s mother,) always lecturing my mother not to let me play outdoors as a little girl to prevent my skin from getting darker. She, too, believed in white skin complexion as being better, more beautiful 🙄Perú as well, was colonized by Europeans.

This view of light skin being beautiful has been around long before any kind of western colonialism. People with dark complexion were viewed as poor farmers who worked in the fields.
