Funny little story. When I was looking for a reverb pedal, I wanted to try to find something that was NOT a Boss pedal, because about 80% of the pedals that I own are Boss. I had some requirements (stereo ins and outs, not super expensive or physically large, could cover a lot of ground, easily acquired) and after doing alot of research I found that the RV-6 was really the only pedal that fit the bill.

I liked mine but sold it recently and applied the funds to a Boss RV-200. Good decision.

⁠@@CatharticGuitarstill have my RV-6 as well as the RV-500. Different use cases … RV-6 for “basic” live pedalboard, RV-500 for big MIDI setup. And yes, so many of my live pedals are Boss (or Earthquaker).

Thanks Leon, great and honest review, as always. I have that pedal for few years, I am satisfied with the beast, it's a keeper. Still looking for other reverb sounds/pedals, though (as we always are, it's a never ending story). You deserve a lot more subscribers, man. Wish you all the best!

I had the RV2 years ago in the early 90s. It really opened my ears to what we call ambience today. It impressed me so much that I ended up recording a an original wedding march song for my wedding - just clean electric neck pickup swimming gently in the RV2 glory. Now days, post mullet and 35 years later of marriage, I still enjoy that recording and the RV2 I had back then. This RV6 sounded nice to me for a stomp box and its affordability. Very cool!

Cool tip on the shimmer is to de-cheesify it by turning the tone down all the way. It becomes less of a 'shimmer' but sounds better for it. More of just another reverb flavour than an obvious shimmer.

I love the ambient version at the end. It would make a great intro live, especially with a synth pad underneath. ROCK ON!!!

Yes, it is! I had this on my board for a while. I needed a reverb with stereo I/O and an expression input so there weren’t many options and afaik this is by far the best value for those features. Having an expression pedal on my effect level made the modulated mode (the best mode imo) much more manageable on tunes where mod verb might usually be a bit heavy handed.

Excellent video! I have been using the Oceans 12 reverb by Electro-Harmonix and I'd say the RV-6 is as capable as that pedal at almost half the price. Also, it's a lot easier to dial in than the Oceans 12. Thanks for a very in depth review and effects testing. Your videos are always straight forward and when I am looking to test out new equipment, I turn to your videos first to see if you have reviewed the products because I know I'm going to get an honest review.

Really nice and honest man.. and a thumbs up for giving us the versatile review from dirt to clean..not so many of those, and that's really the cookie jar stuff.. we like to hear and compare.

It's good, but I think you are spot on with your assessment that if you don't have a verb you can pick this up as a utility and get serviceable tones.

I was looking for a more complete reverb to replace the small Tone City spring reverb. Your review for this pedal is the best with good exemples not only in clean sounds 👍🏻 So I've bought this Boss reverb and tried your setting (room preset with time at zero) with Strymon Iridium and room knob at 12 or 3 p.m on the Iridium. It works so well!! (disto is Friedman be od deluxe) killer sound! It is the first time a setting idea from a YT video works so great for me. Thanks Leon! (merry 🌲🎅)

Very cool.. Reverb and delay are something I have to have of all the effects out there and a wah.. :-) That Tele is cool.. I've wanted to build one.. I've just not got around to it.. Maybe a ZZ top like Tele with reverse headstock and a single humbucker maybe in the bridge! That reverb sounds great.. Boss just makes great useful stuff.. I just love it.. I own the RV-6 and I think it's a very nice allround reverb pedal. For the Modulate setting I prefer the older RV-5 which is brighter and has this kind of "dreamy/spacey" sound that the RV-6 just doesn't provide. I still want to get a RV-3 which is actually both a reverb and a delay pedal and has this warmer "less hifi" sound kinda similar to the DD-2/DD-3.

Guitarist here that just got my first analogue synth and now buying a second set of pedals lol !! Wanted a versatile box , which this is. The additional reverb+delay and the fact i can mono in - stereo out, sold it for me. Strymon for the guitars and boss for the synth. Great review, thanks

It’s my basic go-to verb. I’ve owned strymon, etc but at the 10% mix I use honestly, you cannot tell the difference at that level. Dynamic or room at 10 or 15 %. Works for me just to clean the tone.

I bought the RV6 and a DD8 today. I love both of the. They really compliment my style of music.

I use this pedal for a Rhodes electric piano and it’s amazing

Rockin the tele ! Nice 😁 you hit the nail on the head tho.... Satriani head has no reverb so boss to the rescue in the loop for clean and low gain/ crunch channels 🤘 TC skysurfer is currently filling in for the rv..... The modulate sounds mint... Ever so nice 👍

I used an RV6 for a while and still have it (I should get around to flogging it off). Agreed with pretty much everything said in the vid, but you were a bit more forgiving of the plate than I was. If you use hall in the place of the crappy plate the pedal does its job well enough though, and the mod reverb is nice.

I have the RV-5; it served me well and is an excellent pedal, but I'm planning to buy a Strymon Blue Sky V2.

Mine lives with the tone at 9:00 on the plate and modulated settings.

For me, the Boss RV-6 is outstanding. There are many other that are awesome as well, but the RV-6 can get you amazing ambience and covers *a lot* of sonic ground (hence, incredibly useful). Cheers! \m/, 😊 ,\m/

Honestly, i think it does the 'lexicon-alike' flavour as well as a Polara.

Is it my imagination or does the dynamic setting have a bit of modulation in there?

I love this pedal so much, I own two.

Shimmer/Modulated mode with tone all the way counter clock is pure BLISS.

One of my pre-requisites for buying an amp is: Does it have an FX loop? Because I always want to have reverb and delays in the loop. The TC Hall Of Fame reverb is pretty good too, but this demo has me itching check out the Boss RV-6.

Yeah, to me the RV-6 was serviceable. Overall it was perhaps a bit bright. Shimmer with tone at 9:00 is nice but not unique enough to justify keeping. (I have a ton of delays but my only reverb pedals are the BigSky, Mercury7 and Red Panda context v1. PCM80 & MPX-1 for studio recording.) The mod was not bad on the RV-6, but I do think the mod RV-5 was preferable. But even there, I think other pedals can get you in the ballpark easily, and with more variety.

I have one of these and also the EHX Oceans 11. I like the Oceans 11 better overall, it's a real 'swiss army knife' of a reverb pedal, also the shimmer on that one is definitely better than the RV-6. I love Boss pedals and the RV-6 is pretty great but the EHX takes the edge for me.

Damn. This pretty much confirms my feelings about this pedal. I have a UA Golden Reverberator that is fantastic, but i have it on my 'big board,' set up with my Kemper. I bought the RV-6 for my small board for my Deluxe Reverb, and i went 'cheap,' because i thought i'd only use it when i paired a distortion pedal for 'van halen noodling.' But it just never sounded 'good,' so i usually leave it off and just use the amp's reverb. I cheaped out-should have bought the MXR, which i liked on the venerable Tim Pierce's board over the years. But, no-i wanted to save $50.... Ugggh. Do you have any other suggestions, Leon? I think i'm going to cut bait and sell it. It's not 'bad'-it's a reverb. It does the modes. That's about all i can say about it. It's definitely not a happymaking pedal.

Haven't tried the MXR but it gets high praise. The new UA heavenly Reverberator is pretty sweet if you can live with mono.

I’d like to see a RV-6 vs RV-200 shootout.

Boss make good pedals. There's a big jump (in price and bells/whistles) between the RV-6 and the 'next Boss reverb in the range' RV-500. Interesting that they don't make an RV-200 ?

You do have to wonder why they didn’t do an RV-200. Perhaps differences in sales between DD + MD and RV in the 500 series meant the former were earmarked for the 200 treatment but the latter was not. That plus we now know the EVH, Space Echo & DM delays were possibly all in some stage of development when they would have been working on the RV-200.

Someone who actually uses a shimmer reverb right! You nailed what that whole thing is about...early-mid 80s infinity pool owning, waking up stoned, young money, sleeping with super models, car phone your Ferrari 288 GTO nostalgia. That sound is Wolf of Wall Street in a pedal.

I have had the Boss RV 6 for a while already. Disappointed that Boss didn't do a 200 Reverb release like the Boss DD 200 Delay. Can anyone suggest a step up in reverb quality but not too costly ie not the Blue Sky or UA Golden/Del Verb? Cheers

TC Hall of Fame 2 has better sounding algorithms imo, and excellent quality output buffers which is important if you’re putting your reverb last in your chain. You give up the expression jack that the RV-6 has which may not even matter to you at all.

@@LeonTodd I say this out of love for the 200 series, with their current reverb algorithms an RV-200 would be the weakest entry in that lineup. But the dream scenario would be an RV-7 with new algos and an RV-200 coming with that. (and if Santa Claus is real, a firmware update bringing that stuff to the RV-500). Boss being the absolute kings of delay and modulation makes it odd to me that their verbs are living in 2015

Hard to go past Strymon for verb! My current fave Reverb pedal is the UA Golden though.

I find 9 times out of 10 for decades if I am listening to a guitarist I love they have a EMT140 Plate on the guitar. Now United artists have their budget Compact series one can get the UA FX Heavenly $220.00 USD. You get 2 actually different EMT-140 Plates a dark and a bright plate. A plate makes the perfect always on and make it a bit wet and covers anything that needs a bit of the Sc-Fi spacey thing if needs be. Better one perfect sound than several compromised. The problem with the Boss is it is 6 years old using dated chips. I am sure a new one is on their short list but until then I do not see the value. We have reached a stage where anything better sonically with many affordable better chips is imperceivable to all but audiophiles with gourmet hi-Fi systems. My point is if a unit sounds killer today it will be relatively as redundant proof as a Boss CE-2 Chorus is as pleasingly pro sound. The UA is future proof. In short the verbs 5 years from today will not sound better but simply give you more choices of Reverb types on your pedal of choice for the same budget.

Aside from quality sounds, this one is a monster tank which other pedals aren't.

@@richard.c.guitars the UA Golden is my favourite dedicated verb pedal, mostly because the plates sound solid and the Lexicon 224 modes sound amazing (albeit in a different way to the FAS stuff).
