"IS THE BLACK CHURCH DEAD? A ROUNDTABLE ON THE FUTURE OF BLACK CHURCHES"

"IS THE BLACK CHURCH DEAD? A ROUNDTABLE ON THE FUTURE OF BLACK CHURCHES"
During the first few months of 2010 a new, yet familiar, debate broke out about the role of black churches in the United States. What began as a provocative article on the Huffington Post elicited a wide range of responses from religious leaders around the country, ignited an online dialogue among academics, and sparked a plethora of essays across the blogosphere. These exchanges inspired a series of interviews on NPR, and, ultimately, the dialogue was featured in the New York Times.
Bringing together a group of distinguished voices who represent the worlds of both church and academia, this roundtable conversation will build on many of the themes that emerged in the above debate with the hopes of helping to highlight, clarify and query some of the most pressing challenges and promising developments that occupy the American religious landscape. A number of critical issues-including religious pluralism, gender exclusion, marriage equality, class divisions and the persistence of racial inequality-in contemporary society will be on the table in this discussion of the
Participants to include:

The question is the Black dead ??? Of course is dead , the Church is the Funeral Home , than they bury you in your grave ! They ask is the Black Church dead ??? The word Black it self implies something that is dead ! It was never about spiritual reality , Spiritual Living . it created a false sense of spirituality ! Black is the absence of Light ( knowledge , Truth , consciousness , awareness . Black according to science means , Lifeless , Death , Sinful ,Evil , and Wick ! The Black Church was Never alive ! It was created for the Pale race for their earthy justification for living . I mean , they (Pale race) are the Seed of Cain , the tiller of the soil ! It represents Dead , it glorifies Death . The Church is the Senate of Rome , and Christianity is its religion ( Western Free Masonry) The head of the Christian world , the Pope , therefore, they maintain Superiority ( European imperialism ) over the Black Churches and any other melinaned people for that matter . Let me remind y'all Black is the Void of life , meaning no growth and no development !

That’s the whole problem. The roman Catholic Church is the reason so many pastors teach the same thing called prosperity. Our people have forgotten that these are the same people who destroyed Jerusalem and took everything and flipped it with false hope and lies. They used tithing as a tool to keep them (whites) rich

They REALLY needed to listen and let the people talk. The commentary given by the young female minister made little to no sense to me. They all hit on some valid issues but danced around personal accountability, the true gospel of Jesus Christ and the void of leadership in the black community. The leadership is so geared towards entertainment and performances that it was painful to listen to these ministers try to ascertain what is going on in the church which includes a lot of manipulation.

Every Sunday in black churches across America collection plates are passed and parishioners insert their tithes and offerings. The very next day, as those funds are deposited in church bank accounts, the transfer of millions of dollars occurs as those funds are placed in financial institutions that are not owned by African Americans. However, the weekend’s wealth transfer does not end there. It continues throughout the remainder of the week as the majority of mortgage companies, landlords, insurance companies, and vendors most black churches utilize are also not African American-owned. This wealth transfer, estimated at billions of dollars per year, occurs largely unconsciously but its impact is enormous. The transfer would not be so problematic if a reciprocating money stream was flowing from other communities into black-owned enterprises. In other words, if churches from other ethnic groups were collecting funds each weekend and transferring them to black-owned banks and businesses, the two realities would be balanced, with essentially one cancelling out the other. Instead all of the funds are moving in one direction-away from black communities and entrepreneurs.

@Norris Cool I think that is a pretty large generalization. In this video they mention multiple times the fact that the Black churches and Pastors that are doing a great deal of the work in communities are not publicized. Also maybe these White Pastors that you are referring to are able to do as much as they do because they don't have to worry about themselves or a large portion of their congregation living in poverty. If your congregation makes more money in their careers and return a faithful tithe and offering, you can do more ministry. There are also white pastors that invest in themselves as well. I.e Kenneth Copeland. I do think you have a point about Black preachers though. Not all, but some focus on the here after rather than this life, but I wonder if that comes from being apart of a group of people that has historically suffered in this country. Maybe we focus more on the here after because we cling to the idea that there is has to be something better than this.

Ever notice how everyone is sitting g so upright and "righteous" in stature and speech, but when they leave they don't speak that way. This is a prime example of FALSE SALVATION! So let's not continue to view the "church" as anything else that what it is. The word TEMPLE was used in biblical times to describe man-made buildings

The church is people. People who follow Christ. What they mean I think, is, is the church going to continue to be a viable money making opportunity for people who want to scam others, ask for seed money, and put on an entertainment and fashion show. Actual church, as we get closer, esp. to the end times, will be tge way it is in other countries. Real believers will get together in people's houses to pray, worship and study the bible. The minister, if there is one, will be like Paul, and not take or expect a salary. Real Christianity won't go anywhere, no matter what color the people are, but the church scam will be going somewhere, and soon I hope

I am viewing this in 2022, 12 years after this discussion. The black church definitely seems to be dying and the pandemic lockdown only sped up the process. Older people found out they could enjoy the service relaxing in their pjs from home, and they are not coming back. The younger generations were not invested in attending (in person) pre- pandemic, so they are not replacing those who can no longer attend or participate. Too many confusing/conflicting messages given by pastors with their own agenda, so young people see no value in attending/belonging to any church.

The subject that tripped everyone on this panel had to do with classism in the church. Here you have a number of renowned scholars from the upper echelons of black intelligentsia who make their living pontificating in ivory towers or praying amongst the wealthy. There is no one from the block at this table, no one from the hip-hop community, no spokesperson for the formerly incarcerated seated at this table which was assembled at not in a Harlem library but in prestigious Columbia University.. The black church has lost its power because it has segregated itself with well heeled elites who travel to the hoods of America to pray and then leave. The houses of worship are not sanctuaries for the marginalized who live around the buildings. The churches are in the hood but they do seek out nor do they welcome the people IN the hood. Churches speak about Washington's woes but they are not usually involved in the crisis of gang warfare or meth dealing in their own communities. They are divorced from all of that. This sorry phenomenon is slowly suffocating the black church on a national level.

With who's message? The gospel's complexities are sufficient without us introducing new terminology to the discussion that no one will understand without reading your book. Where is Jesus. As this went on I became.more and more disappointed with what they were saying, with very few exceptions. Ofcourse the church should love, but not the kind they seem to be exposing. The Bible is the basis for our faith and everything we believe. It's where we get our doctrine. Not just the Gospels but all of the New Testament (and Paul) and Old Testament. Jesus handpicked His disciples so that they could continue what he started. So be very careful about some of what they are saying. Gods word goes before anything that these people might be saying, which is based on their own social and cultural experiences and education and not necessarily on the Bible.

After listening not much was being said. Just touching lightly on certain subject but more on compromising. Many black churches are closing or dying because of religion and not the true teachings of our people. So, The rocks are crying out. Teach the truth and live by it. The missionary is in the community and not behind closed doors. Feed my sheep. Teach the true Identity of our people to our people and take your thieving hands out of their pockets. Feed my sheep. Explain who we are Blblically and not religious traditions of man. We are Judah. Start their. And while you are at it. Start with Genisis 10, Deutoronomy 28 chapter. To become who we are meant to be as a people, look at 2nd Chronicles, 7:14. Luke 19:40 is what's happening as well. Acts 2:17 must I also add that thus is the beginning of the church age. Where did all the denominations come from. If we learn our true identity than, we shall know the path to take from their. Hosea 4:6, Isaiah 5:13

I love Jesus, but I ain't listening to Paul! Wow! that's amazing. If you agree with that you have to toss out about 80% of the New Testament. If you do that what's the point? Plus they spoke of homosexual affirming churches as if that were the only option. All sin needs to be addressed, and will cause offense to the sinner. It's a disservice to not inform sinners of their eternal destination without The Savior. This video wasn't a waste of time it was a unique look into the upper levels of predominantly black churches which aren't prosperity gospel.

On Saturdays, the buildings could be used as markets for folks to sell their homemade items. Vans could be used Mon-Sat to create jobs for Black men....transportation service and delivery services. Infrastructure is sitting there unused while a large number of Black people are wallowing in poverty. Black folks are the majority in the projects and homeless shelters.

The problem with the black church (as someone that grew up in it), is that there's a whole lot of talking and not enough doing when it comes to mobilizing the community. I agree with the first lady who spoke that mentioned that the Church's role is to build up the community around common causes. The black church is suppose to be an institution, that's suppose to pass on black values and ultimately address black needs within local communities. Now it's just preaching for the sake of preaching/money/status and ultimately it's purpose has now been to maintain the status quo. It's become a leech rather than one that helps. With the bigger churches co-opted by political parties/media. The black community in my opinion will need to (and likely has already started doing) is to re-think the black church/institutions and start building them up around our community needs. One of the speakers said the problem is that the black church has been faith and no love. I'd argue that it's been all faith and no action.

  • @KrystaNalis

I agree!! :) In fact, this is one of the things the speakers touched on. One thing I do not like about church is that there is so much condemnation and conviction; preachers trying to guilt people in to serving God the way THEY want them to serve Him. I've seen it in my church as well! And this kind of behavior prevents believers from having that truly personal experience because they are too busy worried about "what PASTOR may think"! It's so annoying...and these guys are annoyed as well!

The question is not if the "Black Church" is dead, the real question that should be asked is, is there anywhere in the Bible that speaks of Church based on color? My reading of the Infallible Word of God, says the Body of Christ has many members but is yet one Body. Therefore, I must conclude that there is no African, European, Asian, Hispanic, Jewish, Greek, Russian, Italian, Indian, Australian Church. There is only one true Church which has many nationalities, that being the Body of Christ!

Great forum! I will say that I understand where the passion is for each one of these speakers because the made it loud and clear. I am also aware that each persons perspective is part of the church in its entirety. I am curious as to how each define the Black Church though. Is it as large as the spirituality of Black folk or as particular as the Christian Black Church because the responses seem to reflect each one at different times. I am blessed to have been theologically trained in a liberal intuition that allowed me to preview and review the Church and the Black Church within my own context. I know this will kill some theologians but I happen to believe the Bible is the inerrant Word of God. And because I believe it I cannot force God into a box. I believe God to be the Great I AM. I AM is more than the inspired man can force into words. So often those of us who study get so deep into what we are looking at that we miss the larger picture. I am thankful for how this video ended because ultimately it speaks to the love of God exhibited mans relationship with one another in performance, in acceptance, in prosperity, in culture and in humanity.
