Is The Australian “Fair Go” Broken?

When I landed in Australia in 1995, I was immediately struck by the concept of a “fair-go” being right at the heart of the Australian psyche. But more recently it appeared to me that this was becoming something of a myth, as inequality and poverty started to expand and impinge on people who previously were able to get on, buy and house, and enjoy the Australian dream.
The Productivity Commission just released a research paper titled “Fairly equal? Economic mobility in Australia” and make the point that Inequality is a serious concern when people at the bottom of the income distribution cannot meet their basic needs or where they experience the stress of economic insecurity. And inequality is a serious concern when it limits people’s future opportunities. The countries with the highest inequality are also the countries with the lowest intergenerational mobility, with children from poor families more likely to be poor themselves.
www.pc.gov.au/...
The truth is the fair-go ideal is dissipating, and people are becoming less mobile economically speaking. Those with wealth in the family will enjoy the benefits, but a larger proportion of people are stuck in a poverty rut, and have few ways to escape. Bye-Bye Fair Go Australia.

As a Kiwi, my wife and I were surprised to see big billboards advertising residential property entirely in the Chinese language when we were on the motorway to Melbourne airport. Obviously this was for investment and it was back in 2016. If you invite the entire world in to buy residential property in your own country why would you be surprised that young Australians cannot buy a home in 2024? It is not about where people come from, it is the sheer number of people coming in that is the problem. It can only exacerbate inequality in Australia.

Government has got bigger and bigger and dictate their own agenda NOT thinking or acting for the betterment of its people. Income is irrelevant Martin as the amount of tax is killing opportunity. Bracket creep, gst, indexation, superannuation, medicare, ndis and the rest is just too big. The most overtaxed people in the world, not the lucky country we used to be.

Let me check Taxpayer dollars pay for the construction of an assett like gas We then sell that tax payer owned asset to a private investor. That investor then sells tax payer gas on the international market. The tax payer then buys their gas at high market prices making energy expensive. The government then uses tax payer money to subsidize the gas prices but signed a contract that allows the company to raises prices again anyway for gas produced and maintained by taxypayers
