Is the AFL's illicit drug policy a cover-up or good practice?

The AFL’s illicit drug policy has come into question after MP Andrew Wilkie raised it during parliamentary privilege, accusing the Melbourne Football Club of “off-the-books” drug testing that resulted in players faking injuries in order to miss games. The AFL has spoken and said they support discouraging players who have illicit substances in their system from taking the field. What does this mean for the code’s review of their current illicit drug policy and what damage might these claims do to the trust built between footy and its fans?
