Is the Acura RSX Suspension THAT BAD?! | Alignment & First Drive

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In today's video, we find out whether or not the Acura RSX Suspension is as bad as they say it is! Freshly lowered on Coilovers and New Wheels, The DC5 RSX is ready for a 4 Wheel Alignment and first drive to see if it got better...or worse. Let's jump into it!
Lowering a Honda on Coilovers is typically a walk in the park, but I was warned that the RSX and 7th gen Civic's are different animals. This is mainly due to the geometry of the steering rack and how the angle changes once the car gets lowered. Going into this job, I was fully expecting having to invert or extend the tie rods, install the extended ball joints, add a steering rack slider/riser, and possibly new tie rods just to fix the mess of lowering it. Turns out, I may have overthought all of this...
After installing the coilovers, my suspension was sitting pretty janky. So the first stop after the project was to visit Cody at Larry Miller Honda in Boise to work his magic! Cody is a wizard with suspension and aligns most of the race cars here in town. So I figured out of anyone, he could make this hated suspension design a bit better. With another new OEM tie-rod end installed, he got to work! The rear camber was set to -1.4 with Zero Toe. The front took a little more persuading but ended up with -1.7 camber and Zero Toe. Everything still within spec for the OEM tie-rod end.
So how does the car honestly feel? Pretty damn good. The steering feels nice and tight, reduced body roll, and feels more confidence inspiring in the turns. I do feel the bumps and road noise increased, but nothing out of the usual for a stiffer suspension. Could it be improved? Absolutely, but as it sits, it's perfect for daily driving and the occasional Canyon Run. Down the road, we'll revisit this setup if things need improved. This platforms suspension has a lot of variables, so start with the basics first and go from there. You may be as surprised as I was.
Hopefully this video made the RSX suspension a little less intimidating! Here's some links to the setup so far!

I autocross/circuit race my RSX, you don't need a new slider to get rid of bump steer. The RSX is a very simple suspension setup and what you did was right if you're daily driving. No need for extra suspension upgrades that can cause the car to handle worse. The geometry will only change drastically when you drop it 3in or more. But I'll give you a nice trick for that bump steer, SHG motorsports sells a steering rack bushing far more superior to the OEM and will last longer which will eliminate a lot of uneven road bump steer :) I enjoyed the video keep it up and don't let these people freak you out man!

Awesome! Im glad it worked out well for you man. I didnt do any of the supporting mods, just general maintenance as needed on my suspension and im sitting with highly similar results. I agree, with properly functioning oem suspension, coilovers, and an alignment, the car feels amazing on backroads, I cant complain. Granted I dont track my Type S. EDIT: just got to the end of the video, ive been running the mentioned set up for a year, and its held up nicely to reassure you 👍.

I’m going through a full suspension and brake replacement right now. It was already on lowering spring with stock suspension but no camber kit in the back end so the stance has always bugged me. That will be fixed though and even with all that, I’ve never been to bothered with how it rides or handles. The car looks great BTW, wish I could afford all the upgrades and mods you’ve put into yours, unfortunately with a wife, three kids and a house, the RSX is at the bottom of the priority list lol.

I’m surprised you didn’t call out the eg hatch in the beginning! I’ve been there before where you want all the new things for the car to ride just right. Then, you replace so many things at once and the car handles differently to the point where you don’t know which item made the change. Either way, it’s cool seeing the progress. Looking forward to seeing what’s next.

I haven’t even gotten the car aligned and I can hit a bump in a large sweeping turn at 80mph and the car doesn’t jump out of the turn like it used to. The PCI kit is 100% legit upgrade. I’m going for a track car build though.

As far as roll center adjustment kits go, I looked for some specification from the kit manufacturers as to when the addition of these kits was recommended or not and didn't find any - until I heard of Honed. They've done track testing and evaluation and recommend RCA once the car's ride height is lowered to between 320 mm to 295 mm front and rear (from wheel center to wheelwell arch). I confirmed with them that they found that there's no benefit to RCA if not lowered to 320 mm. This is for 87 to 91 Civics and Integras, but I think it's a worthy guideline to take into consideration.

I think you nailed it in the video, you are over thinking it. Its easy to go down the rabbit hole of parts to improve the suspension. The honest truth is for what you are doing with the car you dont need all of the other parts. Could you add parts to make it better? For sure! Do you need it? Not really. Unless you are going for a max performance handling vehicle that you are going to take to the limits *on the track* doing all the upgrades is not needed. I think you've done the appropriate steps to have fun with it and enjoy it as a daily. You can always do the upgrades later on if you feel like it as well.. Theres no pressure to do every possible upgrade at once. Plus it's always fun to do a single upgrade at a time to actually feel the difference it made.

05 type S owner here, own the car since new and gradually turning it from a daily into a track car. My experience from doing all kind of mod on the car’s suspension including changing out whole car’s bushing twice first to poly then later to pillow ball, coilover from oem to ohlins DFV to revalving the ohlins to higher spring rate setup, JDM alloy front LCA for wider track then revert back to steel oem, caster bushing and caster top hat to gain 7° of caster and running 3.5° camber, Delrin slider and Mugen harden bushing for the steering rack, roll center adjuster but not the rack raiser as I figure out I don’t need it in my set up, your bump steer is a result of dynamic toe change as your suspension travel and it has a lot to do with the connection point between the rack and your coilover, it need to be in an angle very close to stock form but never flat, different after market coilover design “ears” differently and depending how lower and how other things are setup the raiser help you restore this angle back to stock form similar ideal to the RCA ball joint in helping point your LCA downward. For a fast road setup like a lots others already comment good coilover and correct alignment will do just fine, for track value of money mods like add a plate LSD on top of fast road setup with good pads and tires, other mods are not required as they don’t improve lap time a lot, you probably gain more lap time from a fix bucket seat and 4+point seatbelt. This platform under steer more than the previous DC2 EK and in stock form the tail can be snappy at the limit of grip as the car dive in heavy braking. Also the suspension design has its limitations and not the easiest to work with hence why a lot of K swaps

Unless your steering rack slider is really worn, you don't "need" the slider but it makes the steering much sharper. You will get more turn with less input. As for inverted tie rods, extended tie rods, etc... that is all based on how low you go as the position of the steering arm on your coilover moves further out of the stock position. Since you lowered it very little I bet the car feels close to stock just firmer with less roll. There is room for improvement as a stock RSX isnt super amazing but it's still real nice. For your use a rear sway bar might be awesome to reduce body roll and really make the car come around a corner more aggressively.

  • @amirparvez5415

Very well said, was gonna comment pretty much the same thing. The steering rack slider is a wear item and you're suppose to replace as it wears down in thickness. His car has 190k miles so I definitely will bet his slider has a good amount of wear down on it. SHG slider is what he should get next imo. after changing mine at 150k , it was very noticeable difference. made the steering feel a lot tighter and reduced the bumpsteer feel a good amount. Definitely a top mod on my list. As far everything else regarding to extended tie rod ends ,roll center adjuster / extended ball joint, that's if you're slamming your car down more than 2 inches, thats when you star throwing off the angle of the tie rod to the steering rack

With my added widebody kit and supercharger i started to run into the bump steer and roll center problems. If you keep the car close to stock and the bushings aren't worn out you're fine.

As a 05 RSX Type S Owner and a 02 Integra Type R, don't waste your money on a steering rack riser. It will create more bump steer, SHGMotorworks discussed why this inparticular mod is terrible. If you do decide to do a rack slider, purchases the derlin slider from SHG. You don't want a metal slider since it'll be incontact with metal and eventually wear out your rack.

As a street car, they are great. But as a track purpose build they have issues that can be easily solved in regards to the alignment. People overreact and it’s really and amazing honda platform. I’m still beating golden era Hondas and keeping up with high class vehicles in my 2006 Type S 👍

Bumpsteer is pretty bad on most Mac strut cars. Drive a miata or an rx8 or 350 and you'll see what I mean. The Evo and subarus are all the same. It's part of the cost cutting. That said the roll centers will help but. I agree if it's together and you can drive it? Leave it
