    When I move around any of the 14 or so guitars I have I sometimes have to open a case just to see if its lighter with out the guitar. I swear some of them weigh as much if not more than some of my guitars. I just bought a Squire Contemporary with the middle pickup offset QSR pickups and blue burst top. The pictures don't do it justice. It looks so much better than the picture.

    Looking at you FedEx! Nowadays I only order through a website if they're offering expedited options for this exact reason. I've seen the way EXP orders get handled through distribution and sorting centers and a lot more care is placed on them than if you just send it through FedEx standard shipping where it gets thrown into a freight trailer. They'll actually put it into a separate pallet gaylord to ensure stability. Double boxing is a must these days but it doesn't really matter if you have a shitty carrier handling your packages delivery.

    I just bought a 2021 Les Paul 50s Standard. It had very little use and I got a substantial discount from new. I took it apart like Austin did and took lots of photos. Overall the quality is very good. This is my first Les Paul Standard and I'm very impressed. Sounds and feels great, plus its only 9.0 lbs.

    I bought my LP Standard 60s in 2021. I just put a Bare Knuckle Mule p/u in Neck and a BK Riff/Raff in the Bridge w/ BK 550k pots w/ paper in oil caps. I also upgraded the tuners to locking Grovers, the switch to a Switchcraft hand wired switch and a pure tone output jack. I run Elixir 9-42 strings. That guitar ROARS!

    I have a 50's Standard I bought when they first released (see my profile pic) that weighs 8.5 lbs. Love it. Just bought a gold top and it's heavier (over 10 lbs), but I love it too. I also got a white Custom and a 335 in the new era. Can't say I'm disappointed at all with any of them. As you can see, my color is exclusive, but it was accidental. Was supposed to be a Heritage Cherry, but wound up lemon (no burst). All of the paperwork and the model said Heritage Cherry Sunburst, but the photo and the guitar say otherwise. The letters were scratched out under the neck pickup. One of a kind for its time.

    I bought a cherryburst 50s standard a couple months ago that was made in very late 2021. I already had 3 other gibson lp standards made from 2019 thru January 2020. Long story short, unfortunately I definitely noticed a quality control difference from my others one. And I have a confession, I just got rid of it. But good news is I’ll just get an R9 at the right time in the future, and now I get to play my other standards more now; so it’s a win-win in the end.

    Bought one in November 2021 and I absolutely love it. I think people make too big of a deal about the QC. It’s a mostly handmade guitar after all, there’s going to be some scuffs etc. Plus most dealers allow for free return within 30-45days if you do find a bigger issue upon playing. If you’re on the fence, go for it!

    Hi Elmore - I just had a whine myself about the QC above but also complimented how great it sounded and looked overall. The QC is important when pretty much every other manufacturer I have bought from can deliver a guitar in AAA condition to me. It just smacks of lazy carelessness either on the part of Gibson or Sweetwater which is sad to see.

  • @elmorejames6867

    @elmorejames6867

    I agree obvious marks or issues aren’t acceptable and should be sent back, which is where Gibson certainly drops the ball as this happens a lot. but a lot of these videos seem to put these guitars under a microscope and complain about every little thing. Just doesn’t seem like a big deal to me to have a few marks around the guitar that are not noticeable and only visible looking up close under the right lighting. I feel like the alternative is having a machine do everything like many of the imports

  • @Andrew_182

    @Andrew_182

    @ICK They don’t hand carve the bodies, however they do hand finish them, sanding the belly carve, painting, finishing, etc. Gibson just posted a look at the factory not too long ago on their YT where you can see that. So there is a decent amount of hands on time. All that said, for the prices they charge, the level of QC issues they have regularly is unacceptable so no excuses being made here just pointing out they in fact do have a high amount of hands on time.

  • @Andrew_182

    @Andrew_182

    @ICK like I said, not making excuses for them. Nor do I disagree with what you’re saying. Just saying there is hands on processes and that’s where these issues are coming from.

    My daughter got me the Epi 60's standard i bourbon burst when it came out a couple years ago and I was not an Epi or Gibson fan ever... Till I got that. I absolutely love it. I went to GC and checked out a Gibson 60's standard and for that price increase, I felt the Epi was just as nice and sounded just as good. So basically paying an extra 2 grand for the name IMO. But, because I really liked that Epi, I took a chance and bought a Kramer Reissue Nightswan Aztec.. Out of my 20 guitars, that is my absolute favorite guitar. Everything was just perfect on it. Seems like Gibsons "imports" are killiing it.

It's the non AAA but the top was amazing... just had to wait and watch until a nice one on the normal popped up. I have to say it's amazingly perfect. I have a 2017 Standard HP with the AAAA top. That one I did get at SW and my rep went and picked it out for me because the first one they sent me looked good but had a LOT of issues. The neck is SO different but both are amazing, happy to have two very nice LPs after having to sell my 1991 Standard about 17 years ago... eventually want a 60s as well or a Black Custom... not sure.

    I bought one of the earliest 60s Originals. I went into my local Sam Ash on the day they were released. I wanted an “unburst” and they had to transfer it from another store, so I got a few days later. The serial number is 10889XXXX. The top is quite nice, although not as Tiger striped as this one. I did switch the knobs for the 50s style. I believe that the mirror knobs were only used on relatively late 1960 Standards. The “Beauty of the Burst” book only has one 60 with mirror knobs in the main gallery section, out of 8. The serial number of that one is 0 7448. Interestingly there’s another with a later serial number 0 7615 with the 50s style knobs.

    I got a 50s standard in Feb from sweetwater. Had the Canadian case. Issues I have were some rough fret board binding. Poorly shaped, and cut nut. And frets that were not polished at the factory. I am spoiled, I have an astonishing old school luthier in town. He had it all done in a few hours. I love it, plays amazing, sounds, looks, still smells amazing. People will balk, but every guitar needs proper setup by a luthier to an individuals needs. My needs are particular. New les Paul’s come with a generic setup. They cost a lot, yes but I still love les Paul’s!

    I find that since Gibson started using the plek machine many of the nuts are cut too high. Some stores might tell you it's set to Gibson specs and won't do the work to cut the groves or shave the nut down. If the action on your Les Paul is bad check the string height at the first fret you may need to have the nut shaved down

    I agree. I bought a 60s standard from Thomann a few months ago. Sounds fantastic, but the nut is cut extremely high. Far higher than my Fender strat and tele. Far higher than my Epiphone Emperor Joe Pass (1/4 of the price of the Les Paul) and higher than all my acoustic guitars. Poor quality control from Gibson. Screw in to pickguard not straight, nut loose on jack socket. Nothing major but expected better.

    I agree with the back of the guitar, my 60's standard I got last year you cannot see the seam on the back until you look at the end grain on the bottom and even then, it's not that noticeable. I ended up adding locking keystone tuners, with the change in look and the beautiful flame top on it made it in my opinion the perfect guitar. If you want to see it go to sweetwater under the bourbon burst reviews titled "it's perfect".

    I bought my first Les Paul recently, a 2017 Traditional in Heritage Cherry, and I really think that series is a super value pick. At least if you want to play it, not flip it. It's basically a standard in all but name and because of that name it gets dinged in value. My example has a ridiculous flame top, but they allegedly used AA wood for them. The thing is that they vary by year pretty heavily. Like mine randomly didn't ship with the pickguard installed, just in the case. No idea why that decision was made for a guitar called "traditional," but I don't really care about that stuff lol.

    I bought the LP Studio Plus in Bourbon Burst. Which could be called Burgandy burst imho . I bought it just like you did in your selection process, I saw one on the demo line . Picked it out. Then that night on the website I saw a new demo which blew me away. I texted my rep @ Sweetwater and said HEYYYYY I have to have that model. He made the switch and it's in my living room now and is glorious in every way.

    I’m relatively new to your channel and I’m thoroughly enjoying it! You definitely have a wealth of knowledge regarding many types of guitars Les Pauls obviously holding your highest regards. I’m a Les Paul lover as well. I’m also a huge fan of Guild acoustic guitars of yesteryear. That began with my father giving me a 1958 Guild F-47 when I was in high school that he bought brand new in 1959 and paid $650 for it then. Sadly, that guitar was stolen from me. Off that subject I recently bought a black LP Classic on Reverb. I paid $1850 for it and it is in mint condition. Do you think that was a good deal? It’s a 2020 model. Thanks for your channel.

    Despite having the same wood and flame, the flames doesn't pop as much on a Gibson as compared to a PRS or a Carvin/Kiesel. Those companies tend to darken the flame first with a darker dye before applying the main color. Therefore their flames are more pronounced compared to a Gibson.

  • @joermnyc

    I watched a woodworker’s channel, he did a desk top using the PRS way (a guitar builder fan helped him figure it out, since PRS wasn’t interested in letting their secrets out, at least to him) It’s a water based dye that’s hand wiped on and off and the trick is to do the first pass extra dark, then go lighter on the next two coats. That adds TONS of depth to the grain (his was curly, not flamed, it came out looking like a piece of stone, not wood). Gibson tends to just do a color sprayed nitro finish (though it’s electrostatic these days, they run a ground wire to the truss rod, helps even out the coat so there’s no overspray or weird issues that nitro can give (most of the time, the finish errors, that’s where the mod collection get’s their stock from).)

    I am perfectly happy with an understated flame top. Some of the really pronounced flames on the ones with the dye jobs get to be too much for me. That is of course a personal opinion. I just got a 60s Lemonburst last week. I kept my eye on their stock. Sweetwater shows you 4 choices you can pick from. I waited until one came up that really caught my eye and I bought it. Looks even cooler in person. I almost switched at the last minute to one that was on sale due to a few blemishes because that top was very boldly flamed and figured but I decided to stick with my original choice. Understated is not always a bad thing. :)

    My 2021 Les Paul Standard 50's weighs 8 pounds 4 ounces (which was my main reason for buying it) and Gibson goofed by putting the 60's hardware and pickups in it. They also didn't connect the ground wire, which was a royal pain to fix. So yeah, Gibson QC isn't quite where it should be but after fixing the ground I love this guitar. Much better than the 2018 Traditional I used to own.

    Bought mine today and love it. For those of you who are still deciding, let me just add my two cents here. I bought a brand new American fender strat ultra luxe last year which is the highest product line below custom shop kind of similar to Gibson standard counterpart. For me, the Gibson is built better which really surprised cause QC really isn’t gibson’s strong suit. But the other one I was choosing from had a little dent in the binding. So in conclusion, gibson is no longer the same compared to 2015-2018, they really improved a lot. At least the qc is similar if not beret then American fenders.

I just need to resist the temptation to throw it on the work bench to take an individual look at its parts and specs.

    Good to see they are finally sorting the cases out, because these look closer to the old tan case of the 1990's (same type of handle, and better quality latches., maybe a 'key lock' latch, not the stupid hasp thing). You pay enough for a Gibson these days, at the very least they can put it in a decent TKL case as standard, for no extra outlay!
