Ask any car enthusiast to name a hatchback with grip and power that's still big enough for four adults, and I’m sure the VW Golf R would be among their answers! 😇
Now, if you add criteria such as being the coolest parent on the school run to that list, then the Volkswagen T-Roc R elbows its way onto the list, although it’s not as common as the Golf R for some reason 🧐. The T-Roc R is the next size up from the Golf in the VW R range, with an almost identical setup but around 20 bhp less and a few other fine details.
Why would you buy a T-Roc over the Golf? I kept asking myself that question and I found that it pips the Golf with a better daily driving position as well as ease of use when placing a 2-year-old in her car seat… (especially with my bad back) 😆.
The infotainment and climate control are the ‘old style’ with physical buttons for climate control and separated menus for the infotainment, which are easily accessible for both tech geeks and grannies. So, well done VW! Sometimes you need to take a step back to take two steps forward 👍.
Now pushing on, it felt very similar to the Golf; however when thrown into a corner at speed, it did feel a tad loose which I put down to the higher suspension and in turn, a higher center of gravity. Both are great for a daily driver but not what you want for a B-road blaster! 💥
In terms of boot space, having owned a Golf previously, I was sure that VW designed their boots with prams and shopping bags in mind. However, the T-Roc’s sporty rear end reduces that and I found myself playing Tetris when fitting in a monthly shop at Costco along with a buggy 😬.
The 2.0-liter EA888 petrol engine paired with the 7-speed DSG will always see north of 30 mpg if driven normally. When it was finally parked up, it’s fair to say the designers at Volkswagen have definitely got it right with this one. Five stars for looks 😍
So the question that I’m really asking is, “Is the ‘R’ wasted on the T-Roc R?” 🤔 You’ll have to watch to find out!
