I have an all red Stelvio with red seats and breaks, it’s definitely a head turner. They’re extremely reliable. I put 40,000+ miles and no issues except the battery. Bought a new battery and I haven’t had any problems with mine. I’ve drove from St.Louis to Chicago, Saint Louis to Oklahoma City and Saint Louis to Houston with 0 problems. I used to drive BMW’s but ran into wayyy to many problems with them. I wanted something everybody doesn’t have so Mercedes was out the window. Went to Alfa Romeo and I’m happy with my choice. When people say they’re unreliable, I say they’ve never owned one.

The poor reliability with Alfa Romeo cars, is a historical thing. This Italian manufacturer is not known for building reliable cars, and that is a fact. They may have improved with the new models, however, with most cars, a lot of issues do start showing right at the end of the warranty. If you have reached 60,000 miles and not having any major mechanical issues, then you have bought yourself a winner.

Hey Joe the engine sound of the Tonale in the video sounds really good. Is this one of the better sounding 4 cylinders ?

People bitching about affiliation with Dodge need to get over it. There are tons of alliances in the car industry: GM/Honda and Toyota/Subaru on electrics for example and that’s between companies. Within parent companies there are VWs and Audis, Toyotas and Lexus and so many more…and these are both owned by Stellantis. Taking advantage of underpopulated Dodge dealers to distribute an Alfa makes sense to me. If you find a better price/engine/design combo with the Tonale vs Hornet buy what you like and be happy for the options. Otherwise buy something else and be happy without bitching online.

Now my dream SUV!

I bought an Alfa Romeo Tonale Sprint model PHEV ( the base model, not the dolled up, expensive Veloce model ) almost a year ago. I was the first to buy one in Canada, and basically bought it off the truck. I paid less then MSRP, and got it less then what a Ford Escape PHEV ( which at the time had a dealer mark up of $3,500 ) was going for, and where a RAV4 Prime ( basically the same price ) was ( and still is ) unavailable, and a 2 year old used Prime was selling for $15,000 more then my out the door price. Other then 9 recalls ( 2 for decals that did not have metric or French on them, that I did myself, 3 for checking high voltage connections were tight, no parts needed, 1 to replace a switch, and 3 for software updates, because where I live the vehicle would not update itself ) I have had zero problems with it, everything is operating above my expectations, and I am getting better electrical range and gas mileage then stated on the Vehicle price sheet. It handles great, looks much nicer then its competition ( I compared the Sprint model against the Escape and Prime, where most reviewers, etc., compare the Veloce model that they are given by the dealers against the BMW X1 or Mercedes GLA, etc. which to me is not a fair comparison ). It is not perfect, just like every vehicle in certain aspects, but I love it, love driving it, glad I bought it rather then any of the half dozen or so other PHEVS I test drove, and I would buy it again. And, it fits nicely in my garage. All new vehicles have there problems, and mine did too, but the dealership I bought mine from, bent over backwards to accommodate me with the recalls, offered me a loaner while my vehicle was being serviced, and Alfa has resolved every issue with my vehicle, some well documented. I cannot say I would have gotten the same treatment from any other manufacturer. Maybe I am lucky with my vehicle, but my whole experience, from buying it through to service, driving, etc., could not have been simpler, easier, stress free, and satisfying.

Great review sir as always and agree with all your issues. I definitely give the price a Zonk. When you can typically get a Stelvio Veloce for the same price (with discounts that are usually on them) I think that is the better choice unless you just have to have the plug in hybrid. I'd say the Veloce should be $45k or so and it would be an excellent choice in my opinion.

...can't you choose another display configuration to avoid the backward move styling on the dashboard? Digital displays usualy have more than one setup to choose from.

Paddle shifters are a must for me (on ICE vehicles). I had both fixed on the steering wheel or on the center console and I like both set ups. But I have to say that fixed on the center console are better for casual driving in manual mode on tight curves and roundabouts where we usually lift one hand of the wheel. ...as well as on more aggressive driving with some power slides (that I believe the electronic will not allow us on this car). 😊

I am considering this PHEV seriously for the first time!

I got my hands on this gorgeous suv hybrid to test drive the other day and over all was amazing how the Eletric car works with the gas engine

12:15 Alfa Romeo does have metal rest for the left foot on the Stelvio (at least on some trims). They took some clues from the Stelvio for the Tonale, I don't know why they decided to leave that one out.

Just giving a different perspective regarding the rear wipers that you guys always zonked 😆 My family owned a wagon before having those top mounted wipers, problem was: you'll never had a clean wipe! Because the water&snow you scooped up, it still always leak back down making the rear windshield unclean. U see what i mean? 😑

That's the big mistake FCA Stellantis made with this vehicle. It degrades the Alfa Romeo to have a cheaper version called a Dodge. Terrible marketing from the idiots at FCA!

I ordered a Hornet R/T, it arrived at the dealership with so many software issues and no timeline to correct, I did not take delivery. Subsequently purchased a Tonale Ti. Zero issues and certified technicians at the local Alfa dealership when needed. On pricing, I leased the Tonale and got the $7,500 tax credit. Regarding power, the Tonale has the same horsepower as the hornet ( 285 vs. 288). The hornet 288 includes the powershot feature. Why the torque differences ?? Lastly, all your review are outstanding!

Their models have been very reliable for more than 20 years. But when you ask anyone, it it's Italian, they have reliability concerns. ...those concerns are exclusive for those who actually don't have and never had one, which are the vast majority of course. Those who have or had one don't share the same opinion.

The Tonale came first from what I know. The Hornet, IMO, is a cheapened Tonale.

I really do like the Tonale. I wonder how the resale value will hold up, or will it drop $20,000 in 2 years.

Every other brand has better reliability ...everybody knows that. Everybody of course, that never actually have or had one. It's time people stop this nonsense, it's killing the Italian auto industry.

Joe, the new Tonale is a great looking SUV. That being said....FCA should have never made this into the Dodge Hornet which is identical to this for thousands less! This vehicle should cost no more than $2-3k grand more than the Dodge. Its the same car! As for is this better than the Mercedes GLA? Yes. Alfa has great Italian style and decent reliability. I own the Stelvio and I would not trade my Stelvio for this smaller model that costs way more. Its not worth the money.

I've seen a few videos on the Tonale. Looking good with decent features but IMO about $8K overpriced.

You got to give it to the Italians they really know how to do style. Its beautiful . What is a concern is going to be the reliability, they have not been able to prove that they can build a vehicle that are reliable and dependable. After all this is what's left over from Fiat

A very nice vehicle. Extremely clever inside; very high tech. Stellantis clearly has capacity limits because the pricing on this car is way too high, so they must not care about volume. Probably don't have the factory capacity to push a lot of units to the USA. It is a bit too small for American tastes. In europe this is as big as you want because of their cramped cities. But here in the USA, why constrain yourself to a small car? A car that would be way more desirable in Europe or Asia.

The Dodge hornet feels way different from the tonale...interior and even exterior. the Alfa feels sharper, a bit more responsive and more refined it feels more premium.

LOL Most cars are like that today. From the base model to the top trim they all have the same engines, chassis, suspensions and brakes.

All things being equal I'd rather have a stelvio for about the same money plug-in is a bit of that pain in the ass wish they had a regular hybrid

I like the white roof. Don't care for the blacked out roofs generally. Agree plug in hybrid best choice for most people. Looks good but some misses. By the way Joe 6ft isn't really that tall.

Only about 15% of American men are 6’ tall or greater. So, for 85% of guys it’s something I bet they’d be happy with. I’m 6’-2”, and because I’m used to it I don’t really think I’m that tall but as it turns out less than 4% of American men are that tall or greater. It’s a real thing.

Uconnect systems have the worst camera resolution. Our 2023 durango patrol vehicles are awful. Also it looks to much like the Hornet with Alfa Romeo slapped on it.
