It's all about the tires guys. So many people don't understand that. They think just having a 4x4 will take care of everything.
@karlock6604

Agreed! I had a RWD BMW 325ci for 6 years in the snow and 4 dedicated winter tires got me more places than 4x4s and other SUVS and trucks with all seasons and 4wd. My only enemy was the low ground clearance and getting in my driveway after the plow dumped its load at the edge of the pavement.

Good to know. I bought 2021 4x4 Laredo recently. I've been curious to see how it performs in the snow. I think I may need more suitable tires..
Yes, these are great in the snow. On the road, it is extremely confidence inspiring in snow and slippery conditions. I live in northern Michigan and, personally, Snow Mode has always gotten me out of every situation I've needed it to. You just have to gain that muscle memory for the throttle modulation needed to put the proper amount of power down evenly. But, it is fun to switch it over to Mud Mode every now and then too. 😄

@@landonmorel3715 Have you had issues with one? Ours has been great. Other owners I've talked to have claimed no major issues either. Also, I'm a former mechanic and have friends who are mechanics. They all seem to think quite highly of Grand Cherokees as well. Even mechanics who work for competing brands have told me they think it's great suv. I've also read that it has great quality and reliability ratings.

I have an 06 Limited with the Hemi and the Quadra-Drive 2 system and it’s great in rain and snow. We got some big snowstorms around my area in 2020 and it handled it with ease. And I run regular all season tires. You can’t mash the accelerator when you pull out; but as long as you know how to drive, it’s fantastic.

My 2021 Limited X is absolutely amazing in snow. With a good set of winter tires, it is unstoppable.
Never owned a Jeep of any type but, I do love watching them do their thing in mud, snow or off-road. Thanks for an awesome year of vehicle reviews and all the hard work. Merry Christmas to all at TFL.
Snow mode is superior when driving normal on a road vs playing in a parking lot. The purpose of snow mode is to prevent wheel spin, which contributes to sliding lateral or longitudinal. So, if you need wheel spin then you’ll have to take it out of snow mode, but put back for max traction once on the road again.
"Snow" mode also forces the transmission to start in second gear so you get less wheelspin off the line. Nice for controlled starts from traffic lights but pretty useless when stuck. With it on I can't even climb over the berm the snow plow pushes into my driveway entrance as the traction control just says "nope". The first thing I do in my 2012 Overland is turn off traction control if it's being a downer, but mud mode works too. ;)
@joshuapowell2675

I'm glad you explained that. I personally can't stand the snow mode because I prefer being able to accelerate when I know I'm going to need the momentum. I didn't realize it was actually starting in 2nd, but that explains a lot
Blizzaks on my Jeep transforms it when it comes to snow. You can have all the mechanical/electronic bells and whistles, but dedicated snow tires is where it's at -- especially when you're trying to stop.

Merry Christmas TFL! Thank you as always for another year of great content!
It's all about the tires in snow. I drove a FWD car while living in Blackhawk, CO and had no problem in the snow because of the Blizzaks I had installed. Tires>AWD in snow.
As a previous tire technician, I appreciate the fact that they emphasize that’s it mostly all about the tires. But, to be fair, the grand Cherokee is amongst the greatest “snow rated vehicles” ever. I want one. Specifically this one. Is it for sale? Lol
@chriscon8463

A lot of folks where I’m from in NWPA don’t really get that. They think that because they have “all season” tires on & AWD, they’re ok. I’d prefer a 2WD car with 4 dedicated snow tires over an AWD car with all-seasons in the snow. The difference is dramatic!

I used to have a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with Nokian Hakka R2s for the winter time. It was unstoppable! My mom used to have a 2011 and she ran studded Nokian Hakka 9s. We had all terrains that we used the other 3 seasons. We both loved our Jeeps in the snow, never an issue and always got where we needed to go even when we had 18”+ of snow.
Merry Christmas to the whole TFL family! Glad to see you having fun in the Jeep and the snow.
More fun to drive in the snow with the stock tires for sure but when I put on the dedicated snow tires, it turns into a tank in the snow. I’ve never had any issue with the snow we get up here in Canada 🇨🇦 and I usually go out looking for fun after a big snow fall! Merry Christmas guys!
I love your videos, and also great filming!
My wife loves her 2020 WK2 Trailhawk. I ordered ours from a friend who owns a Jeep dealer. I paid $51k CDN dollars in March 2020 after all factory rebates. Ours we optioned with the luxury package and the HID/LED option which I noticed yours doesn't seem to have. In almost 2 years of ownership still 0 issues and the Pentastar engine combined with the ZF 8 speed transmission is a great combo. We are still on the original Goodyear Kevlar A/Ts but will be getting new rubber next winter. We don't take ours off road because we have a TJ Rubicon for that type of adventure. But for trips up north to the camp and Canadian winters the WK2 is not a disappointment by any means. Great video TFL thanks and a very Merry Christmas to everyone everywhere.

Merry Christmas to the entire TFL Team! Best dedicated snow tires I have ever experienced (and that has been a lot) are Bridgestone Blizzaks. They do tend to wear down faster so you don't want to run them in the off season, but for severe winter driving, they are superb. 🌨

Have a set of Firestone weathergrips on my crv and the little bit of snow 3inches we had they cut through like butter hardly any wheel spin mashing on the gas .. if u looking for all season tires with the peaks. They were better than the triple tread Goodyear's I had . Plus they are more quiet on dry pavement too.

These are unstoppable in the snow with the QDII 4WD system. The ELSD is extremely sophisticated in its programming and actuation. Unfortunately, Jeep had to compromise on the stock tires to makes these more suitable for the street and hwy. We have a '19 Summit and the first thing we did was swap out the Bridgestone for a set of Nitto Ridge Grapplers. Excellent combination of on-road/off-road capability and excellent in the heavy snow we get here in northern NH.

Merry Christmas from Germany. Great video. 👍 Our GC brought us through some tricky snow storms in the mountains and did things we never thought it could do. My recommendation would be Sand instead of Mud when you need more wheel spin. Keep doing these kinds of videos. Snow is a much more realistic condition most Jeep drivers will face than real off road driving.
Merry Christmas to all of you at TFL. Thank you for keeping us informed and entertained especially in these awkward times. Would love to see how the Santa Cruz handles in snow as well.

In 2019 bought a new Grand Cherokee Limited Hemi, the first thing I did was ditch the Bridgestone Ecopia tires and got a set of Continental All Terrains. Made a world of difference on road, off road, snow etc. Anyway, Merry Christmas Roman and Tommy!
Yeah! Waited for the snow so long and here you are!!
Merry Christmas! Love the channels!
I’m fortunate enough to have a Raptor and I’ve found snow and slippery mode is for driving down a slick road. When you pull up to an intersection with deep or heavy snow the traction control pulls the engine down so far it feels like it’s going to die. Last year I found a flip of the switch to mud and sand lets you blow through the drifts and heavy stuff. It’s much more fun too.

I think heavy snow is more similar to mud it makes sense.
I use Rotiva's on my RAM. They are rated for all seasons, have the snowflake on them and show wear from 100, 80, 60, 40 and 20%. Great, smooth tire (almost no road roar and vibration like the KO2's) and they work great in mud, snow and wet conditions.

Merry Christmas Roman!
Its called "3-Peak Mountain Snowflake" rating, seriously that is the official "snow tire" rating now and it makes a huge difference, those tiles with this rating have greatly improved snow performance and have tremendously improved ice traction performance.
Merry Christmas TFL crew!!!
Remember tho, you don’t want too much wheel spin on snow if you’re stuck. The friction will melt the snow and you’ll basically be on ice
I have a 2018 Trailhawk, 275/65/18 Toyo AT3’s, and I freaking love it. Haven’t tried snow yet but I’m planning on it this week. My dad has a 2021 WK2 Trailhawk and he loves his Jeep too. They’re great rigs.

Came back to watch this, my favourite car & one of my favourite festive car vids
The Grand Cherokees have always been pretty decent in the snow. Once in 12” of snow, turn off the traction control. That only gets even the best vehicles stuck!! You could have made it Tommy!! Too bad they didn’t give you a slightly more aggressive tire, but the ones on there will perform well in the city and on the highway in icy conditions. They really aren’t a deep snow tire. Roman definitely knows how to have fun!! Should have taken Kase along!! And a snow shovel,,,, hahaha. We always had a aluminum grain scoop shovel in our vehicles for the snow. In fact both Raptors, the Bronco and the 79 GMC have them in each vehicle right now in the shop and garage!! My wife won’t carry them as they are too awkward so she has a collapsing survival snow shovel in her Wrangle 4xe. It works well, but is slower at digging yourself out!! Unfortunately living in the mountains/foothills raising Range cattle, you got too many opportunities to try the method I mentioned. We all carried radios and 3 or 4 recovery straps in each truck. Sometimes you had to be a long ways away to get traction enough to get the stuck person out without getting stuck yourself!
Merry Christmas from Italy! =)
Merry Christmas to you guys.
Merry Christmas guys. Need more videos of lower trim models of the Jeeps. It's not just the trail rated ones that can move through the tough stuff!

Man my Q50 did amazing in 8 inches of fresh snow, traction was barely an issue. Merry Christmas!
So we learned two things, your winter tires video is correct about traction and Tommy needs winter boots.😂🎄
Merry Christmas guys! Enjoying your content as I wait for everyone else to wake up this Christmas morning! I believe the three peak/snowflakes are referred to as “Severe Snow Service” rated. Now that I’m living in real mountains and running up the canyons, I actually swapped out the KO2s on my Landcruiser (for the winter) for Nokias Hakkapellita R3 SUVs because even the KO2s got overwhelmed at times last winter in deep snow. Won’t know until a season of this whether there’ll be a difference, but having the softer compound can make a real difference in the slipperiest conditions. The more aggressive treads clearly provide better traction off-road, but for snow driving, I think the compound is the key.
In north Idaho and have a 2017 GC TrailHawk 5.7L. During the winter I run studded snow tires. I haven’t found anything challenge yet that 4Wheel low doesn’t simply walk out of. Great vehicle on/off road. Jeep nailed it on this one.
Merry Christmas TFL CREW. I like you all
Thanks for doing this video. I just got my new 2021 Grand Cherokee after waiting 6 months for it. I now know what the snow mode does. I now know how to turn the thing off when it does more harm than good. Great tip on using mud mode. I will turn the traction control off too. I learned how to drive in snow without any help from computers. Merry Christmas TFL
And a Merry Christmas to you as well! Thanks for another year of great videos. Would love to see comparison of the newer GC's to the older WJ that Tommy has. Another would be to see how a dedicated snow tire does in comparison to an AT tire that is snow rated. I've always wanted to see how my Hankook Dynapro AT tires would compare to a dedicated snow tire. I've never had issues with these but to see the stopping action and moving action would be great!
Merry Christmas! I have a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee and it is a beast in the snow
Sold my 2018 GC just before lockdown and regretted it ever since. Seemed like the right thing to do at the time but now of course values have rocketed here in the UK...in fact my car is now worth at least £10k more than I sold it for! Happy Christmas to you all at TFL thanks to Roman Tommy Andre & Nathan for all the great content, looking forward as always to more. The main difference is the 2014 has the 8 speed transmission which is way better than the 2012 5+1 speed. Take Care and all the best for 2022.
I got rid of my 2018 overland because it started having electrical problems especially with the adaptive cruise and automatic braking. But I live in Oregon and I tried every winter to get it stuck and just couldn’t. It was a beast in the snow and sand.

My 2019 Limited X was the best car I have driven in snow. With a good set of winter tires, it was pretty much unstoppable. I have not had enough snow to try out my new 2021 model but it should be just as exceptional.
Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas guys
Just get dedicated winter setup. Yes you may stretch some A/S to 60 or 70k, but as we just saw those tire were barely able to get you around new, performance will drop off a cliff after 20k and dangerous once worn to 5/32. Modern winter tires wear quite well when used only in winter and can usually rack up 40k before wearing to 5/32 - the point they should be replaced. A set of A/S and a set of winter will cover 100k of driving and you'll never put a tire on the road in winter with under 5/32 or 3/32 in summer.
They are great in snow for sure!
I would take old school lockers over the computer controlled traction control any day. If you ever get a chance you guys should do a deep dive into what each mode actually does. I know you mentioned snow mode does not allow as much wheel spin as mud mode. I wonder why that is?
@bdawg8907

Snow mode ends up being more for getting traction on ice IMO. It limits wheels spin. For a bit more winter fun, mud mode allows the Jeep to cut it up 😊

Almost all cars that have a snow mode, it's actually a slippery mode, it's not meant for deep snow, that's how it's programmed. Take for instance land rover and the terrain response. The mode is called grass-gravel-snow, and the purpose of the mode is to prevent tire slip and loss of traction.

Can’t wait for y’all to haul this over to Moab! I rarely use snow mode in my 2018 for all the reasons you discovered. Mud/sand is fun in the snow but it’s all about the tires. I have found that my 2018 is not inspiring on ice: the rear wants to walk out.
I think the tires are to blame, I have a ‘17 and it has General M and S tires and it is unstoppable, and balanced on just ice! Love it
