Is the 2020 Honda Fit a GOOD hatchback VALUE or OUTDATED?

The Honda Fit proves big things come in small packages. This versatile hatchback offers a ton of interior space and Honda's great reliability. Under the hood is a 1.5 inline-4 producing 130HP and mated to a 6-speed transmission or CVT. It's exterior has many Honda styling cues. On the inside you will find lots of space but not a lot of 21st century tech. Is the 2020 Honda Fit a good value or old news?

"Outdated" is hard to define. A car that can go 15 years and 200,000 miles with nothing but oil changes, wiper blades, brake pads and tires never goes out of style.

My daughter is driving my wife’s 2007 Fit. About 150k miles and no issues. My wife replaced her 2007 with a 2016 and it has 80k mikes now. No issues, either. She gets 40 to 44 mpg with her 2026 with. CVT trans. My son bought a beat up 2010? and I had to put in a new CV and axle. Not too horrible but his car has been abused…he is still driving it. We are disappointed we can’t get a new Fit orJazz again. Worked great but discontinued.

@@lanceavats8881 The rear seats have astonishing leg room even with the front seats moved all the way back. More than the Accord! However the front seats do not go as far back as i would like. Also, the mid-car fuel tank hump intrudes into the space for the driver's (and front seat passenger's) legs, and for the driver, her right foot. Set the cruise control and try to get your right foot comfortable flat on the floor right behind the throttle pedal - you can't - your heel bumps into the hump. It defeats the purpose of having cruise control - which is to allow your right foot to move into different positions on long trips, so as not to become cramped and painful from remaining in one position on long trips.

I wonder what it is with the Honda dealers and the automatic transmission. I have been shopping online and all of the dealers I have contacted - all of them keep trying to make me buy one of their more-expensive, less economical, less-reliable CVT models. They talk as if they were hard at work - doing me a personal favor - looking across multiple car lots - to search for the perfect car for me. But first they want to know what color. And what b.s. accessories I have to have.... and then they send me lists of cars with CVT trans, telling me I can buy any one of these... If you don't mind my asking: where did you buy your Fit? I might go there. And, if you don't mind answering: how many extra costs did they pile on?

I recently bought one...a Fit EX, 2016, with very low mileage. I LOVE it!! Just to add to your review, which was good, the steering wheel IS telescopic and raises up and down also...it IS adjustable. I know you didn't seem to care for the interior...hard plastic, etc but they are able to make it more affordable instead of real cushy throughout the inside...comfortable seats tho. Also...the seats of the back seats lift up and lock to give more transport room behind the front seats which is AWESOME! And the back seats will recline a bit and the back of the front seats recline back flat so you could sit in the back seat, slightly reclined, and stretch your legs out onto the front seat to rest if you wanted/needed to. The cargo room is amazing, as you said, and when the backs of the back seats are fully down they actually lay flat- flat...lots of room!! Yeayy! AMAZING little car with a TON of room!! Handles nicely for me also and is a fun, comfy not so little, car! Also, if they updated the A/C controls and seat levers to electronic etc it would not be as affordable. I just LOVE it! So glad I bought it!!!

I hit a deer on the highway during the rut doing 70MPH at 11 in the morning... $7000+ in damages, almost totaled but she came back to me. Airbags didn’t deploy because of how the deer hit (off to the drivers side not head on; the deer actually tried to jump over my car when it connected and didn’t damage the front at all just the windshield, roof, drivers side and back door). I came out completely unscathed. It also surprisingly has a lot of room inside. Granted I’m 5’2” and my favorite part is being able to lay down the back seats completely flat. It comes in handy when at the drag strip on Sunday. Instead of a chair pop the hatch, lay down the seats, put down a blanket and relax.

In the course of many trips to IKEA for furniture and bookshelves, it never failed to hold anything I put in there. The back seat is amazingly versatile. The engine is so smooth, I can't even hear it when it's idling. The handling is great, parking is a breeze, and it easily gets 40+ mpg on the highway. My only gripe: road noise. Owned a 2015, the first year of this Fit and there was a lot to like. It was EX/auto. The overall quality was better than other subcompacts and the power and handling were more than acceptable. The down sides include high revving at highway speeds - and the manual would have been worse, the CVT could drone going up steep hills, the suspension was loud and crashing going over imperfect pavement and the fuel tank, which is placed under the front seats, was a little small. Back to the pros, the cargo capacity was absolutely fantastic and nothing else I know of in this class or even a class above can compare. Flaws aside, I'd still consider having another one and hope Honda brings the updated model to the US.

Thanks, Joe, interesting review. My brother in New Orleans has 2016 Fit, and I was visiting him about a year ago to assist while he was getting some medical stuff done and drove his car for several days. I am 6 ft 1, 180, and fit very comfortably, and he had the automatic but I enjoyed driving it around. Exceptional fuel economy (we were getting nearly 40 mpg going across the causeway over Lake Pontchartrain - and yes, I had to google the name to get the correct spelling!) and decently fun to drive around. Like you said, the space in those things has to be experienced to be believed. Not sure I would buy one new, but I think it would make an awesome used car purchase if you find a 2-3 year model with low miles. Nothing wrong with small car reviews!

Nice job with the review, but I super strongly disagree on the dashboard being "outdated" - and I mean STRONGLY disagree. I LOVE the traditional dashboard and guage cluster layout on this Honda Fit. I love the large knobs and the manual controls - and the traditional guage cluster. The reason I love this is that while your are driving, the traditonal dashboard layout is MUCH easier and safer to use because you don't have to take your eyes off the road as much to use them. Plus I think the "traditional design" looks much better and nicer than the modern digital "video game" dashboard designs.

I like to look at what really works better in a vehicle. Does changing something really make it better or easier to use?? Much of the time they try to make a new change to something that's supposed make something more modern, but much of the time the new thing that they changed works worse, and is NOT as simple, clear, or as easy to use as the previous old way.

Also, I routinely deal with 200 plus mile each way drives for work, so refresh mode was the cherry on top for when I want to pull over and catch a power nap.

The CVT is not the best for raw performance when pushing hard, but it's faster than a manual for zippy city driving. Not having to spend 0.5 - 1 second per shift adds up when getting to 60. Then coming to a stop, I can "downshift" through the "gears" to decelerate. Shifting to the 1st ratio too early feels like hitting 1st in a manual too early. You really lean on the tranny to slow down the car if you want. I hate traditional autos, but I really like the CVT for a commuter. When your engine lacks some grunt, the infinite gears can give a bit more pull. It doesn't feel like an engine and transmission, but like a power system you give input to. It's satisfying to drive in its own way.

HiJoe, about bringing the newer design of this car in the US, US is not a big market for subcompact cars. Even in larger cities, people buy compact cars instead of subcompacts. Honda sells at least 50 Fits (Jazz that is) in other markets, for one Fit it sells in the US. So, US is a very good market to clean up their stock of the previous model Fits.

Pretty good review, but I've got a couple of niggles on the details. I have a 2019 Fit EX that I bought a couple of months ago, so I suspect the 2020 is fundamentally the same. Regarding the lack of 12v socket in the back seat, you pointed out that there's a 12v in the arm rest. The arm rest has a cable channel and I have a dual USB charger in the 12v port with cables coiled in the arm rest. Both my kids can charge in the back seat, no problem. Also about the back seat. If you feel like your're sitting a little too upright... recline the back seats. They have a recline position, which I haven't seen in a little hatchback like this before. It's mostly like reclining on a plane, but it's there. I leave mine in the second position all the time. When folding the seats up, they'll snap into the first position and lock there. Lift the seat latch and they'll recline into the second position. And that brings me to a neat little hack that can't possibly be an actual feature, but I think it's cool. Take the head rest off the passenger seat, slide it all the way forward, and then lay it flat into the back seat. You've practically got a bed there. There might even be a scenario where that config is useful. Transporting someone with a leg cast, for example. And the fold-flat passenger seat was also super nice when I had to transport a ladder the other day. I will say, you're totally spot on about the driving experience. It's a very docile car and it turns like it's on rails. Nothing jarring, but satisfyingly precise since it's pretty hard to overdrive this car. I find mine to be super comfortable, but it's not sporty. It'd be nice if it was a little quicker, but you are definitely getting what you're paying for with this car. The paddle shifters really don't add any excitement, but it's super comfortable on the highway and has all the good Honda Sense stuff with lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, collision warning, an ECON mode. It's got a nice set of bells and whistles for a car at this price point. Wish I'd had the luxury of being able to wait to find one with a standard, but I don't regret buying my EX at all. Oh... also worth noting: both Carplay and Android Auto. Again, lots of features in an economical car.

We pay very low prices in the US for Civics and Accords compared to what they sell for around the world. Example: Base prices in Malaysia Fit $16, 939 Civic $26, 110 Accord $35,849 Base prices in US: Fit $16,190 Fit Civic $20,650 Accord $24,020 Wouldn't be surprised if we don't get next generation Fit

I love those 'magic seats'. I can fit my size M Cannondale road bike without removing the front wheel. The cvt don't bother me much.

I love the fact that you use snacks to measure how much space are in those compartments. Oh, and BTW, you're not 6'0", you're more like 5'10" almost 5'11".

We still have a 2007 Versa SL (premium package) that we bought new in the Spring of 07. I would have preferred the Fit but at the time they were hard to get and the dealers were putting a $1000. tariff above list because they could. It's amazing the similarity between my Versa the the 20' Fit. A few of the things you dinged Honda for are on the Versa. We'll be getting Toyota/Mazda in the near future to replace the Versa. No sense buying a vehicle that looks pretty much like the one you already have. Finances have changed in the past 13 years so we have more options.

Been driving a 2018 fit for a while now. I drove from Illinois to florida. Emptied out a storage unit easily, since the seats fold down. get about 37-40 MPG and the gas tank is about 9 gallons. You would be surprised the stuff you can haul in this little devil. Under the hood, if you are familiar with cars, youll notice maintanence is easy even for complicated jobs, not a lot of overly complicated parts and its not too cramped in the engine bay. Im 6 ft tall and i barely fit as the driver, but its not a deal breaker...anyone over 6 ft will have issues though

I really hate those halogen headlights. If only they added the LED Headlights Honda puts in their Honda Jazz overseas.

I have both CVT and the manual. Same driving dynamics, but the fun factor is miles apart. Manual is the way to go especially for subcompact cars. The Fit is definitely go. Kind of reminds me of the old school Hondas.

I use my Fit for Uber and Lyft and don't get complaints. I also use it for Amazon flex and with the seats down I can get 60 boxes in the back

That cup holder on the left of the steering wheel is a huge convience. Holds a wide variety of cup sizes securely. Easy to place cup when getting in the car. Easy and comfortable to access when driving.

I'm about to turn mine in, it's a '17. I might lease again if the dealership can make me a good deal. I can get 42 mpg on long trips, and I actually averaged about 40 from Ohio to Knoxville recently. Then, went on to Myrtle; it did well through the mountains,as it always does. As a matter or fact, this car goes through the mountains really well. That was the first thing I noticed 3 years ago. BTW, it pulls through Fancy Gap like a champ.

I got to dive one of these omg on the outside it looks so small but on the inside it’s so freaking huge, this car is freaking amazing. Reminds me of the 2002- can’t remember si hatch backs but looks a lot better. You can definitely travel in this with a bunch of people. Wish they had an awd in this car.
