A PC screen doesn't do this justice, I really want to see it on a non backlit old school gameboy screen.

I ran this using a flash cart on a DMG , it works fine, its surreal, like watching a video

it would look better if the person that made this video actually scaled the screen correctly and didnt put on a stupid blur filter

Can't keep my demo in my pants
I love the anime girl with an heart that is more 8 bit than herself. The 3-D render is awesome too. I love the music more than anything else.
1:08 This Is Beyond Amazing
IMPRESSIVE! Looks like its MD demo but in 4 shades of greenish black!
There’s just such a strange, nostalgic, beautiful quality to these. This is so powerful, uplifting, incredible. Gives me tons of nostalgia.

Educate yourself 'Nostslgia' is a dog whistle for bigoted people who use the term and the feeling as a excuse for the time they used to end minorities lifes
This was recently in a Vinesauce stream, really awesome stuff! Didn't know about the demo scene at all before that, and was only familiar with the music through keygens haha. This is beautiful.

If I had a demo in my pocket at all times, that'd probably be the demo.
Why do demogroups love these twisty cylinders so much

When I see stuff like this in a frikin' Game Boy it makes me wonder just how much further SNES demos could be pushed. :-o
Wonder if there’s ways to get physical copies to these
Fucking amazing seeing this demo tbh, especially blown up on a Super Game Boy 2.
The scaling Nintendo logo at the beginning... are those software routines or is it "pre-rendered"?
@Nikku4211
6 жыл бұрын
I think a combination of software routines and horizontal raster interrupts.
@zeta0134
6 жыл бұрын
Yes and no! I recently debugged this for a gameboy emulator, and the Nintendo logo is a mix of both. The horizontal scaling is completely done in software, but only once for each row of pixels in the original image. An h-blank trick is then used to scale the image vertically by adjusting the background position on each scanline. This technique is reused in several other places, notably the rotating eye cube uses a similar technique.

Awesome one!
if you think the original grey brick Gameboy requires big pockets, you would really not like the Switch
Gameboy demos are something special
So much more on this handheld console
Reminds me of KEYGEN of some random software.
Does the track used on this ROM have any name?

This would look good with some RGB palettes. Also, I hope the demo community tries to give a little change to their bkg to make things interesting. This, overall, is a legendary demo. Kudos to Nordloef & Snorpung

I didn't look this one, but there is a great website for demos. While this one is not open-source there are others which are. Here is another Demo for the CGB. www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=63691 You can see that there is a source button. It takes you to the github repo of the demo so you can analyse the code and understand how 3d works. If you really want this demo you can try to reverse engineer it.

*NOTE: I am not the person who made this. This is just taken from my observations of at least some of the effects through Visual Boy Advance's tools.* 0:09 Software routines to scale horizontally + Horizontal raster interrupts. 0:14 Horizontal raster interrupts. 0:24 Same trick as 0:09 with different software routine. 0:32 Windowed layer + Horizontal raster interrupts, not sure what else is being done, although I'm pretty sure the same trick was done in "Mental Respirator", a GBC demo by Phantasy. 0:46 Dynamic tiles. 0:52 I think some weird trick that probably involves the windowed layer and allows for more tiles than usual. 0:57 Horizontal raster interrupts + pre-scaled graphics. 1:06 I think horizontal raster interrupts + pre-made twister graphics. 1:11 Software routine to draw dots into screen + double buffering. 1:22 Same as what I said 0:52 probably uses, except I'm more sure that this part uses that trick. 1:26 Almost the same as 0:09, I think. 1:36 I think same trick as 1:06 with pre-rendered voxels. 1:42 Same trick as 0:09 with sprite in the background. 2:07 Stars done using sprites. Yeah, there's a lot of raster interrupts in this demo.

Depends what you mean by 3d but a lot of it is illusion or or tricks. Offsetting, duplication or ignoring lines/pixels intelligently combined with prerendered animation. I don't know if this is the method they used but The 3d voxel woman at 1:35 could be achieved with only 900 bytes of sprite data and a few tricks. Since it's voxels you could use a 60x16 sprite and display each horizontal line 8 times since those lines of pixels would be identical anyway. Since it's only 2 bit colour you could have 4 frames of animation for only 900 bytes. Animate from 0 to 180 degrees in those 4 frames and then tell the program to flip the frames horizontal and run the animation backwards to get you from 180 to 360. As you're animating it move the whole thing left and right to complete the effect. You could probably reduce it to a quarter the size again by telling it to make lines of pixels but it isn't necessarily worth the effort
