What I would like, now that everyone is in the same town, is for Robin and Will to develop a relationship. Maybe she notices his queerness and becomes a sort of subtle mentor for him.

There is no queerbaiting here. I was a year younger than the "Stranger Things" kids during the 80's. Gay folks on TV were crazy, evil, had AIDS, or a combo of the three. Evangelicals and mainline churches said AIDS was God's punishment for being gay. The private high school that I attended? The most powerful teacher was an open misogynist and homophobe. It was accepted and not challenged. The most realistic part of Will's arc is loneliness. He is in the closet out of fear. It has to be subtext because that is realistic for when Will and I were growing up. If Steve Harrington strikes out flirting with a girl, the worst he gets is embarrassed. Back then, if I had hit on the wrong boy, I would have been beaten up or killed. So many times, gay characters have been just "gay." That's it. That is the extent of the character. Will Byers is a person with conflicting emotions and needs. His loneliness and alienation were me as a kid. Will Byers? I am seen and respected. When Jonathon finally validated Will, I broke down and cried. Adult me understand that I am a good man. But 13-14 me finally understood that 35 years later.

This comment is so great and this kind of representation with Will (especially considering the fact that ST is a time period-specific series) is so so important!! Loved your approach to this topic! From my perspective (elder millennial with Gen X husband) I tend to question the line between "queer coding" and "queer baiting." To me, queer coding has always been our fun little secret activity that homophobes don't even notice. Look at how many viewers still don't get why Will Byers is sad! It's an art form, and a media literacy skillset that is being lost.

And I couldn't agree more that media literacy seems to get lost in translation in so many stories these days... also yes! Queer coding and queer baiting can, sometimes, overlap, but I think in this case are two very different things and that Will is being handled with grace! ✨ Hope you have a great weekend!

My real issue with how Will was handled was that his unrequited (and extremely painful) feelings were used to advance a hetero plot. That felt really ick and hopefully they'll do something to fix it in S5.

I absolutely loved your level-headed approach to this topic. Queerbaiting is a big issue and it's hard to talk about without getting emotional but like you said, I don't think Netflix is censoring this story I think whatever arc they have planned is something that Netflix will allow. I hope you're right that its ultimately not queer baiting, because so far I don't think it can be ruled out. I have been hurt so many times with relationships that were strongly implied to be queer but ultimately were not, and it hurts so much every time. I can't help but be guarded. I wish they would say something textually to make Will's queerness real because until they do that, I just can't trust straight creators

First of all... YOUR HAIR 😍 Second, I love your take on this with reminding us that it's not our story to tell. I think if anyone is to get bothered over the story, queerbaiting, etc, then it makes sense to at least wait until we've seen season 5. So far, they really have done a spectacular job at the realistic process of discovering your feelings, and given that I'm 26 and still haven't "come out" to any of my family and likely never will (i don't feel like I need to state my preferences outright), i could see it feeling rushed if s5 is too explicit about it. Sadly, bc of course I'd love a gay filled ending. Still greatly hoping for some tender Byler intimacy with some longing stares and sweet words though!!

I had the very same conversation Will had with Jonathan with my sister and it was so so sweet. I came out to my sister first from my family. I love her most, her and Jonathan are similar to me in the way that showed such empathy and support without having to come out and say it - there is grace and beauty in that. I think we got so used to things needing to be said and I understand why like you said, it is very necessary to have very loud and proud queer representation but it has sort of become a stereotype in writing queer stories, at least in my opinion, I think Stranger Things does a good job of being authentic and beautiful in its story expression. Every time I watch it, I have an appreciation for the details, symbolism and care shown as well as just the writing the sets, the way it’s so immersive and the context and setting in my mind is so well set and imbedded in the show that everything feels natural and real

I loved all about Will in S4, I loved all about his journey discovery and is a very realistic one. What I didn´t like so much is the handling they did with the love triangle with Mike, and how some people have being (maybe unintentionally) leaded to think that Mike could be interested into reciprocate him. What I hope is that after coming out, they give Will a love interested after the time skip.

I don’t see this as queer baiting at all. For as long as time (or close) there have been people who are attracted to a same sex relationship, so why wouldn’t they add this to their story. What really annoys me is when people make up so stuff like this conspiracy to start stuff or cause strife amongst people. If they had added absolutely no gay relationships they would have been given hell for NOT adding it! Lose lose situation apparently. So let them write it the way they want to write it.

It’s a period piece set in the 80’s. Unfortunately it was much harder to come out then, there was a lot less support for young people. As someone who grew up as a kid in that period, it wasn’t until the late nineties early 2000s that as a society people in general became fully supportive of lgbtq groups in general. The reality is as terrible as it is gay people would encountered a lot of homophobia at the stage in time. I think they’re trying to represent the struggle and the conflict he feels, I think he definitely is gay and I’m sure they will be sensitive in handling the next arch of his storyline and reveal more. I think it’s important the history of lgbtq is shown in writing to help us understand the difficulties people had in the past. It was a very different experience as a teenager in the 80s you had no access to information about your sexuality in general and parents didn’t speak so openly which lead to a lot of confusion for most teenagers.

i am an avid byler shipper and i really hope it happens, it’s scary to imagine him coming out to mike and confessing just for mike to not support or reciprocate 🥲 i feel like it might be an IT situation where one dies without the other being able to confess and i am scared i feel like their promo of posting byler so often and the writers tweeting stuff and having the “byler won’t write itself” thing on the sign could very easily be queerbaiting for mikes pov. there’s a lot of subtext throughout the show for mike as well and i love it and want it to work out!! like one that i like is the same song that played when robin came out is the same song that played when el told mike she loves him for the first time and he was visibly uncomfortable. and the background work, the lighting, shots, outfits, etc. i feel like it would be so cool to have someone so deep in the internalized homophobia and see how that gets portrayed and how he grows from it

Just wanted to add that the cast implied from before the release of season 4 that will was going to be “very interested” in another member of the group. Like it was heavily implied that he had a romantic interest. So we know that the claim that they were being reactive in claiming Will is gay is debunked! This isn’t a black Hermione situation!

This is the first video of yours that I watch and it's an instant subscribe. I like how you talk about things. I also agree with the points you brought up. I think I agreed with pretty much everything, yeah. I've also been doing some thinking about this recently and I definitely don't think the show is queerbaiting or doing a bad job with their queer characters because idk somehow watching ST made me start to realise I might be lesbian and not bi...??? So I think they show very relatable queer experiences. I also like that Will hasn't like "officially" come out because like you said, he's been dealing with soooooooo much so it would feel kind of sudden for him to be so explicit with that. idk maybe I am projecting but it feels to me like he's just not there yet, not ready, you know? ESPECIALLY in the context he's in. I mean society being what it was, and him being bullied because people just assumed he was gay and his dad being mean to him about it. Like, he's got a lot to come to terms with :(. I mean I get anxiety about my sexuality and I live in vastly more accepting times, so it must be immense for him. And I think the writers are showing that! They're showing us how hard it's to deal with and that the struggle of self acceptance is an important part of Will's character arc... which is why it makes sense for it to be resolved in season 5. I mean it's kind of been building up since season 1. I know a lot of people wanted it to be explicitly said he's gay but to me it feels like they did just that--he said what he was ready to say. And that's okay. And like you I think we'll see more of it in season 5. I think his internal process in season 4 was an important stepping stone for season 5. Baby steps, you know? I get that we all want queer rep but in the end every story has its own narrative, every character has their arc and those shouldn't be dictated by what the audience wants but what the story needs, I feel like. And like I said, Will's journey is really relatable (minus interdimensional kidnapping and possesion) and isn't that what's important? Rather than focusing on if certain words are being said or confessions are being made, isn't the big point wether or not the representation feels real and relatable? Am I making sense? HAh. I don't usually ramble like this in comments but I really liked your video soooo I wanted to share my thoughts too. I probably missed some things. Anyways, thanks for a good video :)

hey, would wonder if you could do one with mike as well? not really a queerbaiting, but maybe have a video essay just trying to make sense of the whole fact that mike, does not seem interested in women at all? im not a dude and i do like women and men, so i dont know how it feels to not like women sadly, but i can tell that mike is probably queer feom the fact that: most of mikes 'homophobic' interactions with will he seems to be projecting, like in season four episode two he goes 'were friends were friends!' but he doesnt know will feelings for him and clearly will didnt mean it romantically for his reaction was 'we use to be best friends' i just wanna hear your thoughts on mike wheelers (most likely) internalized homophobia and byler, your video was really fun to watch and your points are like the same point i have :))

i also think they waited to make will canonically queer because netflix is such a bad streaming source for queer shows, usually with canon gay characters in shows they let it have an extra season before taking it to the chopping block so waiting for the foirth season to fully say it makes so much sense since the last season will come out and feom what i can see, i think byler will happen as well, just my thoughts :))

I love your perspective and I love your idea for Will’s coming out scene. From a cis straight perspective, I love when stories take a nuanced, contextualized approach to a characters journey of self-discovery and how they share that with others because it allows me to better understand and empathize and connect with real life people who have similar lived experiences. And it deepens my understanding of the broader context like you were talking about in terms of how hard it was for people to come out in the 80s in a society that was demonizing and condemning the gay community.

Yeah I never once accused this show of queerbaiting. By the time robin came out she was a well-rounded, beloved character, and the show bothered to prioritize giving depth to her character, knowing she would come out in the end of the season. That’s care. That’s grace. As for Will, the clues are planted early and I don’t think it was handled with disrespect. It showed the real struggle queer teens faced at the time AND it actually confirmed everything with the brother scene. They managed to confirm the gayness in the same scene that they showed acceptance for him. Jonathan saw his brother’s pain and supported him through and through! I think it’s beautiful.

I’m hoping that Will and Max are the ones who ultimately defeat Vecna. They’ve actually both faced a lot of trauma and emotional abuse, but have been more concerned about others than they have about themselves. They’ve also actually been pretty forgiving when people hurt them. With Max, Mike used her as a lightning rod in season 2. He was a jerk to her, but has never been made to apologize like Lucas was made to apologize to El in season one. Lucas was more justified in his actions. Despite the accusations that Max was trying to sabotage Mike’s relationship with El, she was much more supportive of it than the rest of the party- look at the scene at the mall and when they’re lugging the Cerebral stuff up the hill. Max didn’t say anything against Mike until El went to her upset. El had actually knocked Max off her skateboard and then snubbed her- likely right up to the moment she went to talk to her about Mike. What did Max do? Listened to El, cheered her up, showed her she had value beyond being Mike’s girlfriend and encouraged her to find some individuality. Then of course, there was Billy, who was emotionally abusive to Max- maybe physically as well. Yet Max had still hoped to have a brother- sister relationship with him and felt guilty over his death when she’d done nothing to cause it. She was way more effected than Nancy was over Barb’s death and Nancy had actually done things that led to Barb getting killed. Even if Barb hadn’t died, Nancy had still treated Barb like crap by pushing her to hang out with people she was uncomfortable around, then ditching her. Despite almost dying, Max showed concern for Lucas after Patrick died. Will seemed to at least want to have a relationship with his father in the flashback with Jonathan, despite Lonnie treating him like crap. When Will woke up in the hospital after almost dying in the Upside Down, he noticed Jonathan’s and asked if he was okay. He was scared about the shadow monster killing everyone else. He gave his Tonka truck to a crying little girl. He spent season 4 being Mike’s therapist and wanted Mike and El to be happy even though he himself was heartbroken. Max and Will really haven’t been able to process their traumas because they push it aside for other people. We saw Mike and Lucas chase after Will, but we haven’t seen them talk about what happened to Castle Byers. We don’t know what happened after his mother got the Mind Flayer out of him. Did Mike check up on him to see if he was okay or did he ignore him to spend all his time with El? Mike is credited for being there for Will in season 2, but he wouldn’t let Lucas and Dustin help. The whole “it’s not my fault you don’t like girls” moment had to have been devastating for Will. We see Mike chase after him, but never see them talk about it. We only see Lucas try, not Mike. Mike’s cold greeting at the airport had to only make Will feel more afraid that he’d lose Mike’s friendship if he confirmed his queerness. His coded van confession and subsequent breakdown showed how scared he was of losing Mike’s friendship. He was very forgiving of Mike’s treatment of him at rink o mania. And he was still at least angry on El’s behalf when Mike made the comment at dinner that sent El crying to her room. It was Will’s freaking birthday and El had said to Mike “I want today to just be about the two of us.” Even if it wasn’t Will’s forgotten birthday, that was still pretty cold to cut him out of things, but he was still worried and concerned about her even if he was annoyed that she was lying to Mike. Mike seemed to finally remember that Will had been through a lot and almost died twice when Will said he could feel Vecna. The fact that Will spent most of the season being Mike’s therapist when Mike had treated him pretty horribly and was crying about problems he’d created himself shows that Will is the actual heart of the party, not Mike. The worst that Will has done in dealing with trauma is annoy his friends because he wanted to play D&D. Mike has done things that have hurt people- Max in season 2, Will in season 3 and then Will and El in season 4. It Might be a Wheeler thing because Nancy kinda walks all over people as well. I think that Lucas should be the person Wil comes out to. Lucas was definitely devastated when they thought Will was dead in season one. He watched Max get cursed by Vecna then die before El brought her back to life. He was showing concern for Will and tried to talk to him about things in season 3. He’ll certainly remember that Will was possessed and could get targeted again, so he may have that talk with Will to prevent him having the same fate as Max.

Yes! That's my first point, but I have a lot of thoughts so hopefully this gives you something to chew on. I think it was super important that you identified that queer-baiting is a deliberate marketing tool because you're right, they're not doing that. Having Robin already means they're not baiting, they have created a character with queer representation. I also think a lot of people who claim queer-baiting specifically think Mike and Will are going to end up together. Which is a fine place to be at, but I don't think that it's necessarily as set up in the narrative as some folks believe. Maybe it is! But when I think of the queer-baiting of the 2010s, the byler situation is nowhere near that level (thinking Teen Wolf and Supernatural in particular). I totally agree that it's a challenging situation for Will, the character, to be in and I understand a young teen like him not wanting to come out or maybe not even having the words to come out yet. But as you ended the video on, it is 2022, the showrunners can stop messing around with it because the language is much more accessible now. Overall, I just completely agree with you. Thank you for making this video and rambling, you had a lot of very good points! I would love a video on fan entitlement, it's definitely a trend I've noticed. I've participated in fandom for a long time and when I first got started, the general vibe of fandom was to take the good parts of canon and work fanon around them, but now it feels like people expect canon to take fanon concepts almost? I don't know if that makes sense, but I see A LOT of people comparing canon shows which are worked on for years by many different people to fanon works which are projects of passion and love and typically undertaken by only a handful of people. It just doesn't feel like a fair comparison. Thanks again for your wonderful video, you really knocked it out of the park with this one!

Rebecca! 🔥 Amazing comment as always-- thank you so much for taking the time to watch the video and respond so thoughtfully, I really appreciate it! That is such a great point about some folks watching it with that Byler lens- that's definitely related I think! Also, I agree with you, I don't think those two are set up to be together either! Honestly, if anything, it gives me the vibes of closeted-me pining after my guy friends in high school. ALSO REBECCA THAT IS SO WELL PUT! It does sort of feel that fans look at shows/movies and hold it up against fan-made work and, if fans think that fans write certain aspects better, they get so bent out of shape about it! I think that's a really great point! Would you mind if I quoted you in a future rant about that (wherever that happens? Lol) Thanks again so so much for your support I cannot tell you how much it means to me and I'm so happy you enjoyed today's video!! ❤️

I also made a video about this, I would love for you to check it out! I'll link it below! Not as a promo but I would love to hear your opinion. It was so interesting to watch this video and see this approach from an actual queer person. kzread.info/dash/bejne/daCjuraSma_bipM.html I am of the belief that it WAS queerbaiting. Mainly because of the marketing before the release of season 4. Official social media accounts, Noah on his Twitter, a lot of news sites and the Duffer Brothers hinted, posted and promised queer content IN season 4 that didn't occur. And that is by definition queerbaiting, I think. That Robin is a queer person doesn't automatically mean the show can't queerbait. Do you think a show with any kind of gay representation can't queerbait? If they spread the news that "the duffer brothers promise Will is going to come out in season 4" and then he doesn't, it's not relevant to me that Robin is gay or the fact that Will is going to come out in season 5. It's still baiting. Or what do you think? I am of the belief that ST are avoiding stepping on homophobic toes by not defining Wills sexuality. Lesbians are sexualized and infantilized, but they are not a threat to masculinity in the same way, and therefore Robins representation doesn't scare away homophobic viewers in the same way as Will, openly gay, would. To believe that Will being closeted is a choice based on narrative or artistic grounds (to tell THAT kind of representation) or the lack of definition outside of the media is to avoid the spoilers I think is to give credit were credit isn't due. I know a lot of queers have found representation in Wills struggles and that's great. I do not think that was the idea/thought. I simply think having Will be ambiguously gay, pining for his friend which will not have a happy end, is a boring way to represent his queerness without scaring away the general audience. I really agree with your last "editing room" input. That's what I would have liked to see this season. Make him verbalize to Joyce or Jonathan the struggles and complexity created by being called gay before you know that yourself. Have him verbalize being afraid to leave the closet. There were many ways to go that would have been brave, good, interesting representation. But they choose a really safe way to do it. And on top of that they also marketed and teased with content that did not exist. Great video! even though I disagree haha, you have a new subscriber 100%!

I agree with what you said. I also think that in terms of byler (and full disclosure I’m a byler shipper), it is very frustrating to Will fans because it means that his whole personal arc is basically to be in love with his best friend for years only to be rejected. Diversity win? Lol. Even if they make Mike straight, it doesn’t change the fact that Mike has his best character beats and most emotionally charged moments with Will. Like THEY are the relationship that gets this care and development. But Mike and El, who spend all their time either separated, making out, or fighting, with no real conversation or development other than that, are the “big romance”. I genuinely feel like queer baiting needs to have a new definition. Because even if the Duffers aren’t out there like “ooooh maybe it’ll happen”, they’re still choosing to go SO hard on byler (both the romantic from Will’s end but also the INTENSITY from both of their ends). None of the rest of the friendship pairings are like Mike and Will at ALL. And to know they’re going this hard just for Will to get his heart broken when they never had to make feelings for Mike part of his coming out journey, it is hurtful. Also if you can point to a pairing on TV and say unequivocally that they would be together if they were a guy and girl, it IS a form of queerbaiting. Because queer audiences can see this subtext that straight audiences cannot. If Will was a girl byler wouldn’t even be a QUESTION.

I think personally that those who think its queer baiting don’t know the context or the way that the show is written - there is a lot of foreshadowing, thought and symbolism put into every aspect of the show, even the dnd talk is foreshadowing. The context is the 80s where masculinity was very much coveted by young boys and was shown as the ideal, Will cant for a lack of better word outright act gay and he is probably scared of persecution and intolerance from his friends and family. The show has hinted at his queerness from the first episode, not just Will’s but also Mike’s.

I can’t imagine what it’s like when I realised I was queer it changed my whole world view, I have repressed and denied my queerness even in our times. I can’t imagine being queer in the 80s where toxic masculinity was very much the norm. Usually gender roles and stereotypes and queerness go hard in hand. Will never really fit into that from the beginning and Mike and Will have had a very special connection from the beginning, where it was made a point to single out their interactions, why would they put so much emphasis and care into something if it was going to go unexplored.

I myself didn’t feel like this when watching the series (I don’t often notice mistakes in things because I’m too engrossed in the experience), but I’m starting to see it now when people are pointing it out -w-“ (Sorry if I’m brining the wrong topic into the comment section).

Will is gay and it will be canon. BUT Mike is straight and in love with Eleven. These two things will happen on the show, but there are some fans who will not accept that. I personally wish they would not have gone down the Will-loves-Mike route because I know it will only leave Will heartbroken. They should have introduced another love interest for him who can reciprocate.

@@Joy-zg3lv I understand that people see what they want to see and of course you have a right to interpret things in a way that makes you happy, but honestly, most people would disagree with you and we actually see that Mike is very much in love with Eleven. The fact that he can't say I love you is a reflection of the way a lot of hetero boys do not know how to express their feelings. I don't really understand what you mean with Mike and Will are paralleled to couples that are canon? Mike and El are 1:1 paralleled with Hopp and Joyce (El even had the hairstyle in S4). Mike and Will have been best friends since they were tiny kids and from Mike's perspective that makes Will like his brother (he does not have one, only Nancy, so that makes it even more poignant). Will is an important puzzle piece in the whole lore of the show and he is strongly connected to Eleven from S1 onwards, so of course he would be with them all the time. in fact, there was a point, before it was clear that Will is gay, that I thought they would make a triangle where Will and El would also have a connection and she would have to choose between Mike and Will (which would have been awful, so I am glad they are not going down that route). I really get the heartache of wanting to see your ship happen, but please be aware that you might get really badly disappointed. I've been there, I've shipped non-canon couples before that I had read too much into and got disappointed. Trust me, the signs you are seeing are not as deep as you wish them to be. Mike will end up with Eleven and Will hopefully get another love interest in the end.

i understand what you mean, but every interaction with milevin seems forced? to me, almost every 'heartfelt' scene has people with it, and/or will is there, they parellel through multiple scenes, like milevin ending scene in the hospital looks like a parellel to stancy scene at the end of season one, i understand the idea that you just wanna warn me beforehand, but ive seen how they set them up, and milevin is most likely to fail either way, so in conclusion: they should tell the actors theyre not in love 💀

@@Joy-zg3lv Hm, yeah I can see you are deep in denial, but that's always the case when someone wishes for their ship to be a thing (again, been there, done that). Mileven seems "forced" to you because you don't like it and don't want to see it, but that's just your subjective viewpoint. There were tons of scenes between Mileven that were extremely "heartfelt" but you choose to view it in a different way and that's fine. Fact is: Mike and Eleven are not only a random couple in the story, they are the central couple, the main couple and they will most certainly be endgame. There is no love triangle, like between Stancy and Jancy, where it's still open how it will end. So sorry, but saying Mileven will fail based on some flimsy subjective interpretations is a bit delulu, but you will find out, sorry. Also: if there are no new characters, then I feel sorry for Will and worried he will not survive if he is not being given any chance at a happy ending. He won't be with Mike, that's for sure.

It could be because i'm a lesbian and part of a community that is also LGBT, but i simply DON'T UNDERSTAND how you can write a character and accidentally make him gay. This doesn't enter my head, like i like to write stories and whenever i create my character i choose exactly their sexuality (in the case of child characters i think "when he grows up, what would he like?") so to me it doesn't make sense . And the worst part of all this, Will is clearly a character that they realized was gay after a long time, and when they realized it (in this case, only in the fourth season, jesus) they start trying to finally write him as gay, BUT IT SEEMS LIKE HIS WRITING AS A GAY CHARACTER WAS BETTER WHEN HE "WASN'T GAY"! I don't know, now it seems a bit forced, like Robin's coming out of the closet was so good (we won't talk about the fact that the actors were responsible for giving the idea), because they can write somewhat naturally, but they can't write well a gay boy? like Will's character is ridiculous in the last season, they make him humiliate himself so much that I feel embarrassed. Couldn't they just write him like before, but be aware that he's gay?
