Sonic CD is a strange case for the Classic Trilogy seeing as people aren't sure whether or not it's amazing or awful. Sonic 1, 2, and 3, have fairly unanimous conclusions, but CD is either hailed as the best of the classics, or thrown in the trash. What do you think about it?

Funny thing about the point you make about Eggman making crappy boss machines and the game being about time travel: Christian Whitehead proposed an idea for a true final boss called Final Fever where you'd be fighting a giant Eggman robot that was completely invincible. In order to defeat it, you needed to repeatedly travel between the past and the future to damage it while it was still under construction. While I forget why it was ultimately not implemented, the fight would only be accessible if you collected the time stones and was meant to take place in a "time warp", not unlike Egg Reverie, and there were also banners on poles in the arena not unlike the ones you see in Titanic Monarch.

The only levels that feel like actual "mazes" to me are Metallic Madness act 2 and Wacky Workbench act 1. The rest of the game's levels, while not nearly as elegantly designed as the average Sonic 2 or 3K level, are still relatively straightforward with their traversal from the start to the end.

This game actually was my favourite classic sonic game when I first got into these games, I really found 3&K frustrating, and for some reason I just didn't want to play sonic 2. And sonic CD pretty much taught me how to play classic sonic, like no joke, I genuinely ragequit at the final boss of sonic 3&K (which is a boss I can literally beat with my eyes closed now lol) and didn't play it for like a year, meanwhile sonic CD is a game I didn't enjoy at first, but as I learned how to play it correctly I love it, I genuinely did one play through of it every single damn day until, someday I just kinda stopped and didn't play it until a few weeks ago when I literally bought the steam port, like 2 days before it got delisted because I didn't want to wait for sonic origins and replaying it... I still love it, although not as much as I did before, like maybe it's because of the way I was playing, trying to go for both the time stones and robot generators (and I failed at that because I got 6 out of 7, damn it) and it just made me learn how tedious some levels could be, like wacky Workbench act 2, you need to do a very specific jump at the beginning, or else it's like almost impossible to get the robot generator, and then trying to get 50 rings is really frustrating in some levels. But honestly, I've replayed this game so many times that i don't care about it. And i really enjoy finding different ways to reach the past in each levels and I always find something new in this game. the stage selection in this game is also great, j know I complained about them a bit but I still love them, besides wacky Workbench, Palm tree panic feels different than green hill to me and I kinda like it, collision chaos is a really good zone and the theme is so... It, like there's literally no other zone like it in the series, tidal tempest is my favourite classic sonic water levels and my favourite level in this game, quartz quadrant is a really underrated zone and the theming is also great, like those backgrounds and level gimmicks really make you feel like you're a mineshaft of some kind, stardust speedway is a blast, and metallic madness is a perfect final level for me. The bosses suck but aside from that, all the levels are great and I really love replaying this game. Although it's no longer my favourite classic game. (Also the OST is amazing, while I mostly use the Japanese soundtrack, the us has some real bangers on it, like... Pretty much every Stardust speedway song and even if you mentioned it, j really love how other songs like tidal tempest present and past have a different feel to them than any other song in this series, which makes them stick out, in a good way) Holy hell this comment became way longer than what I initially wanted to write.

I know some people dislike the super peel out cause it’s useless compared to the spin dash, but I used it a lot in my generator hunt play through. The extra speed it gets was perfect for using ramps to get up to higher spots. I’d also use it and then press down to take out enemies. If anything, I found the spin dash to get less use since I’d only ever use it in tight spots with an enemy a couple inches away. Other than that, peel out all the way

Sonic CD is a decent game, at the time I think it was way more impactful then its legacy holds because it was our first time having a Sonic with cutscenes and CD quality music but gameplay wise it can be a little long winded, the levels seem to have a high amount of clutter and Sonic doesn't stand out very well amongst everything else, the levels can be a little long winded and going back and forth through time to get the good ending is more tedious than it is fun. Gameplay wise Sonic 2 was a much better game and Sonic 3 & Knuckles is beyond that.

As someone who has been replaying the entire classic collection a lot recently (hell I even got a sega cd and sonic cd recently.) The best way to ppkay cd is when you already know where everything is. I have noticed that the stages are built in such a way where taking a specific line throughout can pretty much guarantee a past sign time travel, a destruction of metal sonic projector and robot generator. The only stages that aren't like that are Quartz Quadrant act 2 and today tempest act 2 where the past signs and metal sonic moniters are in stupid places. But playing it like that while also getting timestones is my favorite way to play.

People say that Sonic CD is "too easy," People also say Sonic CD has "Bad level design." Well my take on Sonic CD (based on experience) is that Sonic CD is, yes, indeed easy, but easy to where you get to at least have fun and explore. Plus, in order to make the game a challenge, you can Time Travel to get the good ending by destroying all Badnik Factories and Metal Sonic Holograms (or you can take on all the Special Stages or do both and get only a couple Time Stones if they tend to get tricky after a while), even though it can be a chore at times, it at least gives you an opportunity to explore the level instead of just holding right to win because as a Sonic fan, I usually like to explore the levels to find secrets and to at least have enough lives as possible to finish the game or use power ups to help me. Sure CD's final boss is easy, but having enough lives will be worth it since now you know how much finding secrets can pay off when it comes to Sonic.

Its worth noting that in 1993 CD, time traveling would reset the timer to 5:00, if the timer was beyond that. If you were good at time traveling, you could jump between periods to give yourself more time. I don't know why the remake removed this, and didn't give us an option to disable the timer.

I still don't understand the somewhat recent "hate" towards it, I remember playing it around the time it came out and it was a blast. Coming back to it over the years, still is my favorite classic Sonic game. And don't get me started on the awful US soundtrack that just doesn't fit, why you guys had that?! You poor poor souls! On the other hand Sonic 3&K, now that's a game I don't really get. It's really good buuuut...there's something about it that I'm not digging.

Honestly, Sonic CD was always kinda just “ eh “ or flat out bad for me. ( Especially considering it’s lower than most classics on mine. ) My favourites are 3&K and 2, so having to try and get 50 rings *to* the end always was annoying. So, having to do that, or track down some random generators, which I only really usually do during the first two zones, anyways, since I get the time stones. Because honestly? One of the best special stages, only losing to 3&K. That’s one of the most enjoyable points for me. Also having two different OSTs always rubbed me off the wrong way. Regardless I just use the JP OST since I think ( personally ) it fits the “ Sonic “ style better, rather than the weird shit inside the US OST. Regarding gameplay, the spindash is god damn weird. I say the charging could work if it was more powerful and in 3D, like in SRB2. Though you might as well just use the super peel out. The zones are just weird. Depending on what you’re trying to do. Time Stones or Robot Generators. If you do Robot Generators the fun of every zone just d i p s since you have to do it for every. Single. Zone. At least with time stones you only have to do like 2 zones and a 1/2. The bosses are god damn piss easy, except the final boss. That’s just annoying, next to the pinball machine. Though I guess it not being in the way is fine. Overall the game, like I said earlier is just ok. I’ve never liked it, especially considering most of my experience is with the remastered versions and CD really just doesn’t hold up, even to the original 3&K.

I love Sonic CD, but I’ve never been sure whether it’s actually a good game or not. I love the visuals and soundtrack, but time travel is awful and speed is almost nonexistent if you want to have fun with the game, which is ironic since this is a Sonic game.

It’s very misunderstood. Sonic CD beats sonic 1 and 2 (without tails) for me. It has a very interesting story, the music is fire and people say the level designs are trash but that’s only because it’s really different from sonic 1, 2 and 3/@k, the level design is actually super cool and interesting

CD, especially the original SEGA CD/PC version, was far from a masterpiece, but I personally enjoyed the game for what it is and also its emphasis on exploration. It had its collision problems and the spin dash was unreliable to use sometimes. Christian Whitehead's version of CD however is closer to being a masterpiece because of how much was improved in terms of performance and also replayability because of Tails being playable. Being able to switch between the American and Japanese soundtrack was also a neat addition. When I say I love CD, it's really the Christian Whitehead version that I'm talking about. The original CD was overall a mixed bag to me.
