Not trying to be mean, but I've been watching a lot of videos on why SA2 is bad or good, and everyone complains about how long these levels take, and it's understandable if you are playing for the first time but the longest a level has ever taken me is 6 minutes and that was rouge's space level with the gravity fails. All together, I beat this game in 3 hours. So I don't think the actual game is long, it just depends on the players skill level.

This may be a late response but yeah. I saw speed runners beat the stage in less than a minute but that's mainly because they memorized every single location for every hint the monitor thingy gives but the RNG does effect the time by a few seconds either if its more time or less time

Sonic levels have always been about a rocky first run where you don't know where anything is, and then replaying those levels with new knowledge to do it smoothly and with a respectable time.

@@Someguyhere111 The difference is the first time around with classic Sonic is still enjoyable; in SA2 the treasure hunt stages are a massive slog to go through and I took more than 20 minutes several times. The mech stages are also extremely repetitive

31:07 I don't really understand this argument "Age has finally caught up to it", you pretty much said you didn't like it in 2001 as well. I mean you're free to call any game good or bad as it's your opinion, and most of this video was well-written, but at the same time, all the problems you had with the game have nothing to do with age. It just seems like either you like the game or you don't, your likes and dislikes of certain elements of the game existed in 2001 just as they do in 2017. Asking if a game is "still good" implies that time should negate the positives of a game, when in reality the only thing that time could potentially negate is the appeal of a game's graphical fidelity when compared to newer games. Just my two cents.

Thanks for the thoughtful discussion. I would argue nothing is immune to time. Be it silent movies from the turn of the century or disco music from the 1970's, and certainly not video games. Goldeneye 007's controls feel downright archaic compared to games released just a few years later. Platformers are no exception. Things improve, design evolves, and some games aren't as rosy when viewing them retrospectively. I mentioned my experience in 2001 to demonstrate I'm not just jumping on the SA2 hate train, and I quoted old reviews as they gave a better picture of how the game was originally received. I purposely avoided comparing it to SA1, and instead platformers of the same vintage to show how Sonic Team was rehashing 1998's ideas while it's competition was pushing the genre forward.

I think SA2 has the best ending. They all have heartfelt and meaningful conversations with eachother- especially Eggman, who becomes human in his conversation with Tails. Shadow was largely a villain but his death is a sacrifice for the greater good, giving them good reason to mourn his passing.

Personally, I think it's great beyond all of that because it serves as a great cap-off for the character; throughout the Dark Story, we see more and more about Shadow's backstory, the most important in my opinion being about his purpose; one of the flashbacks is about Shadow wondering why he was even created (something he is implied to figure out himself but still not properly revealed to the players yet), and we get some subtle hints, namely his devotion to Maria and offering to grant Eggman's wish when he released Shadow, but it's revealed in the Last Story that Gerald created Shadow to grant people's wishes, which he used to manipulate Shadow into granting his wish for the world being destroyed by altering his memory so that he believed that Maria wanted him to kill everyone on Earth, when as he realizes in the first cutscene preceding the Biolizard boss, she actually wanted him to give them a chance to be happy, which he does by teaming up with Sonic to defeat the Finalhazard, inadvertently sacrificing himself in the process due to over exerting himself in his Super form, causing it to be unstable (from my understanding, at least, and I do want to mention that the only thing that implies this is a line Sonic says during the final boss that you might not even get to hear, so it's easy to not know what killed him), thus putting a proper end to his character arc. TL;DR, Shadow's goal in SA2 is to grant his dead best friend's wishes, first trying to accomplish what he thought Maria wanted and then what she actually wanted, and he did so at the expense of his own life. The only problem I really have with this ending beyond being too vague on the cause of Shadow's death, something that's especially hard to ignore when Sonic didn't die despite being in the same circumstance, thus rightfully raising the question of how Shadow died, isn't even something that occurred in SA2 itself, but rather the games following it, particularly Heroes: Shadow, despite Adventure 2 making such a big deal of his death, is shown to be alive and well, I understand that Shadow was a very popular character and apparently plenty of fans did want him to return, but that kinda removes a very large portion of the impact the previous game's ending had, and all for a new arc, where he has amnesia and he might be a robotic clone, and then in his own game he gets his memory back, we learn that he's technically part of a race of aliens because Gerald used their leader's blood to give him life, and after a bunch of non-canon endings where he comes to different conclusions, it is revealed in the true ending that he is indeed the real Shadow. Via exposition Eggman gives you in the final boss. After 8 minutes, more time than you likely would spend on it. Clearly, Sonic Team did not learn their lesson on how to reveal major plot details like this, they did not even have anything else to do with the character, and now he doesn't really do anything.

Even if I wouldn't go as far as saying that SA2 is a bad game, I believe SA1 is the better of the two. On the gameplay department. In here, I like the story and some additions like the Bounce Attack, the rail grinding (this is the very first game that introduced it to Sonic, hence why it's so clunky), and the special Attacks you can use in 2P mode. I agree with your ideas on improving Knuckles and Rouge's gameplay, by removing the fetch quest part entirely and focusing more on exploration/platforming. Perhaps make Knuckles with a bit more focus on brawl, kinda like the Werehog in Unleashed, but MUCH less intrusive and mandatory, and of course, give exploration the priority. For Tails, I would work upon his SA1 gameplay. Take out the racing system, give him the Hand Cannon from Sonic Battle, and he's fine. I'm glad that you didn't bash the game maliciously as Others did, or being overly nitpicky to the point of making up complaints. People need to realize that these games are 16-20 years old almost, but the framework, if updated and tweaked, can still work today. A more grounded story instead of shitty sitcom chatter (unlike Colors, Lost World and Boom), let people who are STARVING to play as other characters again to enjoy that thrill, and of course, a fully 3D game, without none of this hybrid nonsense.

Meh, i find myself disagreeing with this review. Most of the Time when someone states dumb shit about the Game i become mad, but you didn't state dumb shit, your arguments were actually really well thought-out. I must say that this is not my favorite Sonic Game, but as someone who likes this Game, I still find it to be one of the best. Sure, it's disappointing that Tails is in a mech and that Rouge has some tedious level design, but honestly, Knuckles and Eggman are fine. I think that's mostly because Knuckles and Eggman were meant to be in the Game from the start while Rouge and Tails were thrown in at the last moment. In terms of the Game aging, well, i'm still convinced that this Game aged extremely well compared to other Games that came out in 2001. That's all i have to say today.

Honestly, I enjoyed this review a lot. I admit my experience with Adventure 2 has been all over the place. I remember loving it back when I was 10-11 then in 2012 I hated the game and now I love it again. I think the reason why my opinion keeps changing with this game is because the game has it's highs and lows. Overall, I enjoy the game and hell, i'll defend the story if shit like Bioshock Infinite will be crowned as some of the best stories ever in a game. Sure, it isn't perfect but I feel like the hate for the story is a bit excessive. And hell, I actually liked that it went with a downer ending because it kind of symbolized what the series critical wise has been since. Sure, Colors and Generations came around but for 9 straight years the fanbase and the critics were mixed with on the main series games starting with Heroes and ending with Black Knight. Hell, even now thanks to Ryse of Lyric people are even starting to question if Sonic was even good. Honestly, that's a pretty terrible thing for any franchise. And in a way it does make me feel bad for the fans who still enjoy Sonic but yet get ridiculed for enjoying a franchise. Though yeah, I certainly found this review much better than Projarad's review of the game.

On why everybody mistakes Shadow for Sonic: Eggman sees Shadow in, well, shadows, and in his mind there's only one hedgehog that always shows up ruin his schemes. He very quickly realises his mistake. GUN's higher-ups know that it's Shadow and not Sonic, but they'd sooner have Sonic take the fall or give Eggman a Chaos Emerald, or risk the entirety of Prison Island, than let the public know about Shadow or the incident on the ARK. The simple grunts following their orders don't question their superiors when they put out a warrant for Sonic's arrests, they just trust in the justice system they're part of. The citizens likewise might question why Sonic would do such a thing and why he looks different in the photos, but they don't know him enough to say it's not just him in a disguise and "fast hedgehog" is a description that fits Sonic well. Amy... had no excuse. In the comics she insists that the sun was in her eyes when Sonic teases her about it.

Amy does have an excuse actually. It was only put into the canon later tho, specifically referenced in Heroes and specified in Unleashed. So I guess it was unexplained at the time SA2 came out, but this detail is only a retcon in the sense of it adding context, it does not contradict anything. And stories can help each other get better, that is entirely within the rules.

My goal was to present the facts (being objective) and then explain how these impact my enjoyment (the subjective portion). It should be ok for fans to have differing opinions, but trying to persuade someone to *join* their camp feels like a disservice to the fanbase's intelligence. My favorite positive SA2 reviews are the ones that don't try to convince me I'm wrong. Retropolis Zone's review was great in this regard.

The reason why you never caught on is that you simply beat the game. The story scenario, while is an epic adventure in a sense, is only a small part of the FULL thing. Sonic Adventure 2 has an insane amount of content that rewards mastery and replays. And as you complete these missions, raise these Chao, unlock extras, and get better playing the game, your appreciation grows. For most people who made that full investment. Play through the missions, get better, you will shave those Emerald collecting missions from 18 to 3 minutes at most. It's really a game that rewards investment. Also the 2P mode was also awesome.

It's totally ok that you still dislike this game, but I think if you compared your footage to anyone who holds a higher opinion of the game/also claims to be a decent gamer (let alone a vet of the franchise), I'm pretty sure you'd see your sub par playing. I'm right w/ you in the boat of disliking games we can't get good at for the life of us, but that's because that boat requires admitting you aren't good at a game and then criticizing it for not jiving with you for whatever reasons.

Well no offense but I feel a few of the problems you had (or at least some of the deaths you had) came from simply not having a full understanding of how the characters control and what they can and can’t do. For one, those periods of invincibility you mentioned and showed for Rouge’s gun mech fight in security hall don’t exist. Same goes for Sonic and Shadow’s fights with the mechs. If you jump up on the boxes you can hit the cockpit before the mech land or stops in place. Same with Rouge, you can fly into it if you time things right while it’s flying by and shooting. What I’m saying is, while I enjoyed this analysis, I feel some subjectivity leaked into it, as I’ve never experienced some of those hiccups myself.

I remember watching you bashing this game in your previous video for the same reasons. I can definitely see why this game can be so divisive. This game can offer some bright spots such as the Sonic/Shadow levels, but players have to slog through the not-so-good stuff like the other levels in the game. How much you enjoy these levels depends on what you enjoy in video games in general. It definitely reminds me of Star Fox Assault on the GameCube. Personally, I think the game is pretty good, and much better than Sonic Adventure 2. However, in between playing the flying levels, you have to deal with some on-foot missions. Whether you like these missions or not depends on your tastes in video games.

Security Hall takes after Aquatic Mine, as they both use alternating switches to access different parts of their respective levels. The difference (Security Hall's switches are discrete, Aquatic Mine's flow into each other) speaks to the overall trend of differences between comparable Knuckles and Rouge levels.

Media doesn't become bad just b/c time has passed, the Adventure era of Sonic, is still ahead of it's time today, b/c of one story told in multiple perspectives, playing as more than one character, switching characters on the fly, having multiple pathways in a plat former, and I'm not sure what 06 did.

Good comment. I would disagree, video games, and movies in particular, certainly age. Ask anyone under 20 how they feel about some classic NES games like Ninja Gaiden or Batman and they'll likely be far different than people over 30.

Thanks, and it's ok if you disagree it's fine, again I still enjoyed your video, I even clicked the like button and I look forward to your next Sonic review, and that Projared review was bad imo, at first, in City Escape he cuts the game slack, and then afterwards, he complains about pretty much everything. I'm just saying that some of the best 3-D Sonic games to come out are being trashed, SA2 used to be considered the best, it never was my favorite, probably never will be but I still enjoy it.

Bill Dozer This is less about the games themselves aging and more about the playerbase and shifting standards. After playing more and more game succeeding at what older games have failed, flaws become exarcebated and harder to ignore, when at release the games were impressive enough to blind you. Had I played SA1 in 2001, I would probably have loved it. But I played it only a few years ago, and I hate pretty much everything in it.

Sadly, the ONLY parts of Sonic Adventure 2 that I actually remember fondly anymore apart from the lovely Chao Garden are City Escape and Metal Harbor. Just pure nostalgia, right there! And the rest of the game just failed to live up to those two great stages, in my opinion. City Escape is one of my all-time favorites, it's just brilliant, not to mention the amazing catchy song by Crush 40 playing in the background. Such a great level, it _IS_ Sonic Adventure 2, as far as I'm concerned!

There do seem to be a few little things that got wrong here, like Knuckles did NOT send emerald shards into space with a punch. He brought all the shards with him in the space shuttle, and they all spilled out when it collided with an asteroid. (Well... a chunk of whatever rock build-up that had been stuck on the Eclipse Cannon for the last few decades, if we really wanna get specific.) The level picks up when he's recovered some of them, while Rouge found a few more. It's also interesting to note that people mistaking Shadow for Sonic actually makes a lot of sense. In-universe, Sonic doesn't have much of a public appearance. He shows up one minute, and disappears just as fast. The last time he showed up publicly was when he fought Perfect Chaos, grabbed the chaos emeralds, and transformed into a GOLDEN version of himself. So, it makes perfect sense why a lot of people in-universe would assume that this fast black hedgehog snagging chaos emeralds was Sonic. There hasn't exactly been a whole lot of those running around, and Shadow just had only shown up just then. Although, I must question the logic of keeping a chaos emerald inside a bank in the first place.

I think your way of thinking with the boss battles, rewarding the player for learning the patterns and whatnot, is what needs to be applied to the treasure hunting levels. They can all be frustrating at first, but to get good at them you need to learn the level layotus and how to get between the different setpieces as efficiently as possible. Pumpkin Hill, for example, has three mountains where the emeralds can be. Church Mountain, Ghost Train Mountain and Pumpkin Mountain. Your objective as the player is to find a way to scavenge all three of these as quickly as possible to find where the emerald beeps, rather than just walking past them and nabbing the emeralds like in Adventure 1 where the radar detected all three pieces at once. Some levels like Mad Space or Death Chamber aren't built for this playstyle an are too big/too narrow to allow the player easy travel between the setpieces. But most treasure hunting levels in the game are fun to master; they can simply be overwhelming to newcomers.

I think I'm the only one, but the treasure hunting stages are actually my favorites. This is however, the first game I ever played, & my favorite game. Rouge is also my favorite character so that's another factor. I had this game on the Dreamcast a long time ago, & I still have the Gamecube & Xbox 360 releases. I remember the first time I played SA2, it was with my stepdad in the living room, & he said "let's see what Sonic's up to this time." I'll never forget it, he started playing City Escape & when he died, he handed me the controller which had never happened before. I played it & I was hooked. I eventually got to take the Dreamcast in my room, and then it was the next level. When I first beat the game I excitedly went to tell my older sister & she didn't care, as you'd expect from an older sister, lol. As much as I love this game, and as much nostalgia as I have for it, I can't deny some of the truth of what you said. It took me until the 360 port to get all 180 emblems, & I've been playing it for about 15 years. When I said I was the only one to like the treasure hunting stages earlier, that was based off experience. Being my favorite game, I would always get anyone I could to play two player with me & takes turns on one player. 2p races were up for grabs, I'd always win treasure hunts, & I'd always lose shooting battles. When we'd take turns on 1p nobody else would play anything besides Sonic/Shadow stages, & only a select few. The city & jungle levels, & Metal Harbor. After beating those to death a couple people would try Sky Rail. My friend Beth was the exception, she played Dry Lagoon because Rouge was my favorite & she wanted to play as her.. She hated it. Every video I've seen seems pretty close to my friends opinions growing up. TheGeekCritique does a pretty good review too if you haven't seen it. I know the game isn't perfect, and while I love Rouge's levels, it's very niche. The only style people will pick up & play will be the Speed stages. But that's cool with me. Last thing I wanted to say was thanks for thoroughly using DC footage. I haven't played the DC version in at least 10 years, & it was really nice to see the small differences like no emblems under the stories once completed, the lighting in Iron Gate & Flying Dog, as well as other well known things like the end of the Dark story & Chaos creature transparency. Very nice video.

I recently decided to get all A ranks in Sonic Adventure 2 (I have had the game on the Dreamcast since it came out but never got around to more than just finishing the game). After finally completing the game I can most definitely vouch for the fact that if you truly want to enjoy the game you need to go for all A ranks. I beat the game back in 2002 and pretty much had the same opinion as you; all these years thinking that the game was not great, just okay; but that has totally changed. I think a lot of the reason the game feels clunky / not especially fun is that if your only goal is to get through both Hero and Dark modes and complete the Last story you only need to play at a beginner, maybe novice level to beat the game. In my experience, to truly enjoy the mechanics you have to put in a lot more work. In other words, by pursuing all A ranks you start to learn more of the intricacies of each of the play styles. Certain mechanics that aren't as readily apparent if your goal is just to complete the game. By mastering each play style you learn how fun the treasure hunting and mech stages can be. I went from hating the treasure hunting and mech stages, impatiently waiting for the next Sonic / Shadow stage, to absolutely looking forward to playing both, especially the mech stages. Learning the layout of the stages and enemy placement to get the optimal bonuses by destroying 11 enemies at once is required to get the A rank in most of the mech stages and it totally changes the mech stages from boring run of the mill "run and gun" stages to a more intricate experience requiring a combination of quick reflexes and tactical gameplay. The treasure hunting stages, although still my least favorite stages, also are a lot more fun when going for an A rank because you are forced to play both fast and smart. If you are familiar with the stages you can activate at least one hint monitor per emerald shard / key and still get an A rank, as most points for getting an emerald shard or key are based on time spent retrieving it and not the first one or two hint boxes you hit. So getting a 2000 point "perfect" bonus is an award you can get for knowing the stage well enough to get a hint from the monitor, quickly process in your mind where the clue is indicating you should go, and using you skill controlling Rouge or Knuckles to B-Line it over to the emerald shard / key's location. The hint monitors are not there to punish you for using them (although I agree the game makes it seem like they do); but rather are an integral part of the gameplay experience. They make the level less about RNG and aimlessly flying around until your tracker goes off and more about using your experience with each level to your advantage. In that way all of Knuckles and Rouge's stages are puzzle boxes, not just Canon's Core. If this were not intended by the developers I'm sure they would have made it impossible to get a "perfect" point bonus each time you collect an emerald shard if you used one hint monitor. Yet you still can and do. I don't think I would be considered hard core for going for all A ranks. Rather I started playing the game again and rather than starting a new file I decided instead to see if I could change a few of my E ranks to something a tad less embarrassing. And when I learned how fun it was to play with the necessary skill to get A ranks the game totally changed for me and I was hooked. I had to hone my skills to get them all. Again, take it or leave it, but I would try to play through at least all 5 missions in at least one stage for each of the 6 characters as well as try to get an A rank in at least 3 missions with each character and see if that changes anything. It most definitely did so for me!

well as soon as you said that you had struggled with this game for 16 years that made it very clear that you weren't really into this game. I beat this game in less than a year when I got Sonic Adventure 2 Battle on the GameCube in 2002. This game has also helped my KZread channel have larger view count way back in the day as I uploaded an entire play through back in 2008. I do have to agree that the treasure-hunting stages are royal pain though. and the thing is I've also played Sonic Adventure DX and I actually did have fun at the treasure hunting stages in that game. That's because the stages were smaller and that they actually let every emerald be detected on your scanner instead of just one at a time. I still think Sonic Adventure 2 is better than Sonic Adventure 1, but honestly if the treasure-hunting stages in Sonic Adventure 2 were done more in like the way they were done in Sonic Adventure 1 they wouldn't be such a pain in the ass.

9:58 Slight lore misunderstanding. I used to think when I was younger that Knuckles just shattered the Master Emerald into outer space was how it happened, but it's not. When the gang of anthropomorphic animals fly their way up to the ARK, Knuckles accidentally pulls a level opening the hatch where all of his collected pieces of the Master Emerald were stored, making a lot of pieces fly off into the space around them. This means that you're actually collecting the same pieces of the Master Emerald that you've already collected beforehand just because you lost them again.

The 'digging in the same general area looking for emerald pieces or keys' is one of the best changes in SA2B: as of the Gamecube port knuckles and rouge get a ! over their head when they're right on top of it. Honestly, I think that might be a big part of why I seem to like it a lot more than you. With that and once you learn the levels a little bit, it starts to become enjoyable because you're trying to optimize your paths rather than just wander around hoping to stumble into something.

It feels as though you're approaching the game from an angle that it wasn't fundamentally designed to entertain. SA2 specifically stands in contrast to something like SA1 by virtue of its emphasis on score attack gameplay, as evidenced by its point systems and scoring systems. Functionally, this means that it's less akin to SA1 (and by extension the classic trilogy) and more of a hybrid between the SA1 concepts and the linear route + point acquisition focus of something like NiGHTS, with a bit of JSR thrown in. In essence, the functional purpose of a first playthrough is to understand the terrain and optimize from there. For instance, the vertical aiming concerns you highlighted with the mech stages are indeed an issue initially. However, in the context of the mech stage controls, you don't really gain full control of the mech until you gain the hover capability, which both serves to add verticality to the style of play while also enabling greater control over your speed due to the fact that the mechs maintain greater momentum when using the hover to aid changes in direction as opposed to turning normally. And while this is a notable concern in the context of the 6 hour story, it becomes considerably less so in the context of the 40 hours of emblem collecting and score improvement that would follow. The treasure hunting could be considered similarly. As, the hints are far more direct in this game, meaning that it becomes far faster to progress through the stages as you become better acquainted with how the levels position pieces in relation to each other and how the levels themselves are best traversed. Which would turn 15 minute long affairs into 1-2 minute treks into much more complex levels than Adventure 1 held, essentially giving far more replay value to the player who digs deeply into it. However, issues such as the homing attack specifically can be attributed to poor explanation of game mechanics, as the game at no point references the fact that your vertical position in relation to the ground also changes the arc of your homing attack, with lower heights resulting in a downward trajectory which better enables the player to hit things like the Metal Harbor end speedpad without bumping into rails. Ergo, in the context of the kind of information you left out, it feels less like a proper critique of the game's strengths and weaknesses and more an explanation of why the game doesn't jive with your personal preferences. Which is completely fair since SA2's design pretty much stands alone in the franchise (and you did a great job of clearly conveying what turns you off from it), but it fails to consider the nuance inherent to the game. Hence, it's not totally effective for the purpose of determining whether it's "good" or not.

This is a really great review, Kris, but I am a liitle different on the idea that SA2 is not a good game. I know that the treasure hunting and mech shooting is not that good, or the game seems to drag on for an eternity at times, but these have never really bothered me, in fact this game is still one of my favorite games of all time. The Sonic and Shadow stages are indeed the best, the music is some of the best the series has ever seen, and the chao garden is a nice distraction, as well as having the best multiplayer the series has ever had. I mean yes the game hasn't aged as well as other games have, but i still like this game, and i guess i have more tolerance for pain, but this game will never be bad to me, no matter what games come out in the franchise in the future. All in all, I can understand why you feel the way you do, but this game is still good in a way, it just needs something to make it so much better.

Well that's a half an hour of bickering I won't get back in my life. Most of the review started out pretty positive, or reasonable, and then you just dropped the "It hasn't aged well" bomb at the end. My brother and I spent hours playing those treasure hunting levels in Sonic Adventure 2 Battle multiplayer, because those were our favorite parts. The experience does vary per person. It's a better experience for the type of people that also enjoyed grinding overpowered Chao. If you didn't care for the Chao grind, you didn't care for the Emerald hunt. It's about patience and appreciation of a concept.

Now, if you go for all A ranks and all 180 emblems like I have been trying to, THAT'S when the flaws become apparent and distracting, or just plain infuriating (see Radical Highway mission 4, for example) Regardless, it's still a favorite of mine.

I have been playing this game since I was just a kid. I have even 100% completed it at least once every year for a few years straight until I slowly but surely started to dislike the SA2 experience. It used to be my favorite Sonic game but as I grew up like you said I noticed there were so few bright spots compared to the parts that were really bad and I lost interest in the game entirely. That being said I do still think SA2 holds the key to Sonic's future as the Sonic and Shadow stages are still some of the best 3D stages found in the franchise combined with the glorious 3D controls few Sonic games after SA2 have been able to match. In fact I'd say they didn't get 3D Sonic controls right again until Sonic Colours although I have to give a shoutout to Unleashed for taking a step in the right direction again. You have earned yourself a new subscriber. I am looking forward to seeing more of your content in the future.

  • @Tharja-iBW

There are a few points I agree on such as the Treasure hunting levels needing to be shorter but you're forgetting the very foundation of what Sonic games are supposed to be. Remembering, remembering specific cues, remembering the spawn points of the emerald shards im the level, remembering the enemy placement in a level and remembering platforming elements. These are all things that people who play the Sonic series keep in mind. You aren't supposed to know the location of everything on your first time, or second time playing. Sonic is a game that you have to repeat to understand. There is also one major flaw with this review that no one else is pointing out, the fact that you're saying no one else will enjoy this game based on the things you don't like. You don't put into account that the properties you dislike may be liked by someone else. The funny thing is I got Adventure 2 years after you did and I never got 11 minutes on any stage like you did and I enjoyed them. The levels were straight forward and can be beaten quickly if you actually think before you leap and can be resolved if you use the skills in your arsenal to think of a solution. Now this isn't to push aside a lot of the other stuff you have mentioned, there are a few things that you mentioned which you have points on. Such as collision and not being able to see the cealing in the anti-gravity sections and the story did have a few plot holes that I would like to patch if I ever had the chance to re-write the story for a re-released game. Do I think Adventure 2 would hold up today? No but I don't think its a bad game either, it contains too many charming elements such as the Chao Garden you didn't mention aswell as other things such as the mechanics of the gameplay styles while slightly dated are not bad im the slightest. Based on the majority opinion I don't think it's a bad game and this is not just my opinion I'm sure a lot of people would agree.

Graphics on the Dreamcast were better than Gamecube's and PS2's. The crisp textures give a superior feeling to the geometry intensive focus of the other consoles. Only the Xbox beats DC from that gen. The fact people overlooked it because of that ridiculous fake hype the PS2 had was almost a crime. Console was cheap and super capable, I was more impressed with SA1 on it than I was with any PS2 game at launch.

I despised the Rouge and Knuckles levels when I was 12-13 because I sucked at them. Now that I actually understand them, and realize that the game is at its most fun if you're trying to get every A-rank (or better yet a good world ranking), they're fun as hell.

Good review. I played through Sonic Adventure 2 for the first time last year, and I do admit that it is a solid Sonic game but I've always found it kind of overhyped by the fandom, and there are a number of issues with the game as well as just my own hype backlash that did hinder my enjoyment and keep me from considering it one of my favorites of the series. As far as 3D Sonic games go, I've always enjoyed games like Colors and Generations more.

I tend to agree. I dug Adventure when it come out, but by the time Adventure 2 came out I felt the formula was already feeling dated. Rayman 2 or Super Magnetic Neo seemed to evolve the 3D platforming formula where as Sega stuck with the dated concepts for a few more years. Colors really blew me away, and to a lesser extent Generations. Still, both seemed to push the Hedgehog forward with more interesting levels and tighter gameplay, and a ton more polish. The adventure games will always have it's fans, especially SA2, but to me there are far better 3D platformers from the era. The Sly games and Voodoo Vince in particular have really stuck with me.

I found Colors & to a much greater extent Generations overhyped by the fandom when they came out. While I agree with the hype that the Sonic Adventure games get. It all comes down to preference & I feel that the Dreamcast Sonic games were far more ambitious & had a lot more to offer than the newer Sonic games.

@@implantgames "Tighter game play"? You need a drift button just to turn in Generations! I couldn't disagree with you more on this point. Sonic controls like a 2,000 pound car in Generations whereas you can pretty much do whatever you need to do in the adventure titles. Besides that, you're comparing apples with oranges when you bring up Voodoo Vince/Sly Cooper. They might as well be different genres entirely.

One of your criticisms about the length of the game is not something I've ever had trouble with. I go back and replay the game every few years and usually doesn't take me more than 2.5 hours. Even back when I wss 5/6 years old it wouldn't take me more than like 4 hours. Not to mention I could usually beat the treasure hunting stages in under 5 minutes (excluding the space ones).

I don't agree with your overall opinion, but I resect that it's based on the actual negatives of the game. That said, I don't think emerald hunting is as problematic as people make it out to be. If your radar tells you you're getting colder, turn around. Establish the perimeter of where you can detect the emerald, then go right into the center of that perimeter, you'll find the sweetspot in like 15 seconds total. Also if it's buried, don't just dig randomly. Walk/climb around until you get the exclamation point, figure out the perimeter in which you still have that exclamation point, then dig in the center of the perimeter. SA2 is, fortunately, not as picky about where you have to be digging so you shouldn't have much trouble at that point. Also while I agree it's frustrating that the radar won't go off if an emerald is nearby, I did find it just as frustrating in SA1 when multiple emeralds were pinging me because I had trouble tracking just one. A good solution to the problem would be to make it so that the first piece pings like normal, but the others only ping when you get in yellow range (until you get the preceding piece, obviously).

I have the Gamecube port, and I love it so freaking much. Favorite Sonic game, Magic Hands down. Maybe it's not for everyone, and I wholeheartedly agree it's not perfect, but I personally think it's just awesome (taking into account that it's fifteen years old). I got all 180 emblems, have 3 Chaos chao (Chaos, Melanie and Adagio :3), and seem to be among the minority that actually really likes the treasure hunting stages (I don't even mind the wonky radar). I can't wait for Christmas break. :'D

In other words, if you´re a casual player who gets easily frustrated, SA2 probably isn´t for you. I myself love all three gameplay styles, and got all 180 emblems from scratch several times. As for the "trolly" moments, you eventually just kind of learn what to look out for, and then they never bother you anymore. I guess it mostly has to do with how quickly you comprehend the way that the different mechanics in the game work, but, yeah; If you were expecting to go in as a new player and have zero bumps in the road, I can see why one would be let down initially.

As a few counterpoints: Classic Sonic has more of the cheap deaths and poor enemy placements/design than you seemed to mention, but it doesn't even need half of the number SA2 has to be far worse, as Sonic 1 and 2 send you back to the beginning of the game upon game over, making each cheap death sting that much more. The classic games also relied on replaying the same stage over and over until you got good at it and could go fast, even Sonic 3/Mania does this, if you die in Act 2 you get sent back to Act 1. I spent easily 20 min to an hour on some acts of Sonic 3&K my first playthrough. If you played the classic games as a kid like I played SA2 as a kid, I'm sure some of the problems with classic sonic are lost on you, just like the problems of SA2 get lost on me through playing it as a young age. I didn't play the Classic Sonic games at a young age, but I played through all of them a year or two ago, and then Mania didn't give me trouble, as I just had enough experience with the gameplay style that I mostly breezed through the game. Had I played Mania as my first classic sonic game, I probably would have spent the same amount of time on some acts as I did in Sonic 3 (such as Mania's Sandopolis Act 2 clone). Of course, just because the classic games have similar flaws doesn't excuse SA2 having them, but it's worth noting. Your comment that SA2 reuses stuff too much is a bit exaggerated. There is some noticeable copy-pasting in levels, which isn't ideal, and isn't masked as well as it should be, but it's not enough that I ever felt like I'm retreading the same level with different enemy placements, outside of one or two moments. I actually didn't enjoy the driving stages at all, and would call them a low point in the game, the physics feel pretty bad to me, and having to constantly drift to have non-stiff turning and maintain a decent amount of speed just seems off to me. I don't have any gripes with SA2 myself, however that's likely because I played it as a kid. The treasure hunting stages taking a long time until you learn them, while also a mechanic in Classic games, is pretty stupid design. I also played the games on the Battle port, where the treasure hunting stages have some cryptic hints removed, and finding where to dig is significantly easier as it puts an exclamation point above your head when your right on top of a hidden emerald piece. I suggest you try the port for any future playthroughs, you may find you enjoy the treasure hunting stages at least slightly more. Great review overall, enjoyed it. Nice to see a review of a game that isn't bashing every little part of it, like reviews of Sonic games tend to become.

I was awful my first playthrough, nowadays I can beat S3&K without game overing on a phone w/ touch controls. Most people who like the classics usually played them as kids, and never get to see the side of how they play for a first-timer in today's day and age. You don't see the side of how many stupid deaths and little tiny poorly designed bits they have when you already know about all these things and how to avoid them. SA2 also has that though, there's probably a thousand little tiny issues with SA2 I can't see at this point.

Not a terrible game, certainly not among the franchises worst (because the lows are awfully low)....but SA2 was never really a good game. Critics loved it when it came out in 2001...for all of about 6 months before it was re-released on the gamecube in 2002 and people saw through flashy exterior graphics. Many fans who are old enough to remember and this wasnt their first sonic game, also remember this game not being really good. Again, not the best, not the worst. Definitely C tier. Had some strong moments that live in infamy, but many more very weak moments.

The GameCube version of the game is easily within the Top10 Sonic Games & you would have to be insane to think otherwise. Also it was released for GameCube in December of 2001 & was well received as the 1st Sonic Game on a Nintendo Console (well it was released at the same time as Sonic Advance although that's beside the point) much better than the Dreamcast version. Sonic Adventure 2 was the best big anniversary game for the Sonic Series & is often considered the best Sonic Game on GameCube. SA2 Battle for GameCube is A-Tier if you're willing to give all the playstyles a chance. It had 1 of the best multiplayer modes in the entire Sonic Series with only Secret Rings, Racing Games on actual consoles, & the Olympic Crossovers being comparable. Now if you want lows for the series look to most Sonic games released in the 2010s.

Watching a full playthrough of this game on Johnny's channel put me to sleep. Don't misunderstand me: I adored their meta criticisms, as every party acknowledged that the game was overly disjointed and cumbersome to tolerate for its flaws. Much of their humor revolved around tasteful, but scathing criticisms. My eyes just couldn't a sign a peace treaty with what was on screen. Listening to them talk about the game while I cooked or did homework was a far better compromise than actually watching an entrapment of dysfunction disguised with Sonic on the cover. I must be fair and admit to only having watched the game being played, rather than playing it myself. There is no need to take my comment as anything more or less than a premature observation, but I haven't seen any press about this game to impel me toward playing it. Was the marketing really so strong as to jumpstart its initial following? Whatever the case, the hammer of objectivity appears to be delivering its due now.

For what it's worth, I'd argue it actually does make some sense for GUN to mistake Shadow for Sonic. Why? Because, while Shadow looks different from Sonic, I'd argue Shadow does like Sonic in a paper-thin disguise. So, GUN hears about "An incredibly powerful hedgehog who ran at racecar-like speeds beating up our robot army", the most obvious conclusion is Sonic. Indeed, he's kind of their only lead. Though another explanation is that GUN *does* know that Shadow is not Sonic, but wants to pin Shadow's crimes on Sonic to cover up their own activities. This would qualify as a *major* blunder mind you, as a known terrorist escaping with a stolen superweapon is definitely not the time to make enemies with someone like Sonic. But it is a plausible blunder.

  • @lpfan4491

    @lpfan4491

    3 жыл бұрын

Actually all the possibly reasons at once. High ranking members of gun spread false information about it being Sonic to the lower ranks to keep Shadow a secret. Then these lower ranks obviously chase Sonic because they have no idea what is going on and have to do what they were ordered. A few hours later after Sonic was already fighting with the military, Shadow strikes and eye witnesses falsely claim that it was Sonic because Shadow looks like a paletteswapped Super Sonic and the bankheist happened at night. At this point, the military has an actual incentive to chase Sonic beyond selfcovering, due to him being erroniously wanted by the law.(Which means people would be at ease if they caught him) None of this is actually stated in the game, but it is very easy to put together once one notices that Sonic is just randomly caught before any of the active soldiers would have any idea that something happened hours prior. Some stories are actually praised for doing something like that.
