if your cabin door is closed, how does the FA know if you are awake, asleep, or watching a movie?

There are openings on the suite door where someone can look inside. But yes, the fact that the suite doors are closed adds to the privacy, but also restricts cabin crew from seeing you

Took the suites before to Del, HKG and Bom and they were superb. Hope this is just a once off incident
now i'm inspired to try both. which is better? that's the definition of a First World Problem.

100 percent!
It depends, if you want space, some privacy and maybe even a double cabin, you're lost with the 777-300. If better catering is enough for you for the extra charge over business class, then okay.
I noticed when you showed your second leg being upgraded to the A380 the mileage amounts needed for both saver and advantage. It noted “waitlisted” on the chart. Did that mean you were not confirmed in first but actually waitlisted?
there are 2 dedicated cabincrew on the 380, the 380 is much better than the B777
