    The problem is that speaking in Swahili is viewed as obedience, and Kenyan youth hate obedience.

    You misspoke. It's not that Kenyan youth hate obedience, its just that they are rebellious... as is the nature of ALL TEENAGERS across the globe. The wayward expression of their raging hormones which is presently manifesting has in part taken the form of this SHENG (English and Swahili slang mix). It's a passing phase no more. Consider also, that many of the ones who gravitate toward this SHENG reside in slum cities devoid of hope and opportunity; this means, that whatever gimmick promising them the spotlight, even for a short time, will be immediately exploited.

    Every major town or city in the world has its urban lingo or slang. It's just Kenyans do the most lol... English, Swahili, and Sheng are here to stay. Sheng has been around since the 70s and every generation has its own twist on it, actually can tell someone's age basically by Sheng they use. We also know when to separate all three.

    @@patrickochieng79 Ok. Though, even for Kiswahili there are variations, there is Kiunguja (Zanzibar), Kiamu( Lamu), Kimvita (Mombasa). I guess that would be better comparison on different Kiswahili versions just the way there is American English, British English, Australian etc. When it comes to standardized Kiswahili there is actually very little difference between TZ and Kenyan Kiswahili. Sheng is just another language that pegs on twisted Kiswahili with other languages just like pidgin or patois is pegged on twisted English mixed with other languages.

    First off Sheng isn't, has never been and can never be a Language. It's basically a Slang. Linguists will agree with me, I am 29 years now and the Sheng evolves overnight, the words we were using while I was 22 have vanished now and can't be used anymore - in fact using them makes one appear backword. Sheng doesn't pass as a creole or as pigdin and that's why a kid will always switch back to proper Swahili while speaking to their parents or their elders. Another thing is Sheng is only popular in certain areas and words could mean different things in different areas.

    Sheng is a coded language and it is NOT Kiswahili. It is also not spoken by ALL Kenyans. All Kenyans speak Kiswahili even though the level of fluency is varied just the same way it is with English. Kiswahili and English are both compulsory subjects in Kenyan Education curriculum from primary to secondary school. Kiswahilli and English are Kenya's official languages, but Kiswahili is the national language and English is Kenya's business language. Kiswahili language originated on the Kenyan Coast through the Pokomo/Miji Kenda languages. On the streets and day to day lives, Kenyans will speak Sheng, English, Kiswahili or their mother tongue based on preference. I have no idea why people are hell bent on distancing Kenyans with Kiswahili and creating twisted narratives.

    Sheng is widely spoken amongst the younger generation in Kenya. It was intended to make it difficult for parents to understand conversations or topics of discussion. Sheng is limitless as far as language is concerned; it borrows from almost every language ever known to man - if the word is known to the youth, they'll find a way to use it. Some words are common English and swahili words used in reverse or broken into parts, then jumbled. It has been and will be difficult to have a sheng dictionary because the language is constantly evolving and changing by the day and by generation.

    I think that every language developed from a mixture of different languages or under the influence of many factors (including colonization/immigration/trade, etc.). The fact that even Swahili is a mixture of Arabic, Bantu and some Portuguese shows that Swahili is not an ancient language. As an American who is attempting to learn swahili. Swahili is still largely a bantu language with a small percentage of it's loan words from English and a few other langurages (like 10%) and the other is 30% Arabic (that's the highest percent I have seen). So, I believe it could be ancient if you are looking at if from the bantu perspective (60% of the language is bantu). It's like Korean. How 10% or a little bit more of Korean have english loan words but they use the Korean alphabet when spelling and sounding out those loan words. If you read the Korean loan word it sounds exactly like the English translation it's meant to be. And how Korean is technically simplified Chinese. When learning individuals make sure they learn the grammer and sentence structure behind the language so they can sounds as Native as possible. It's a language that was developed to give the Koreans the ability to read and write under the Chinese rule using the Chinese alphabet. But, when you think of the Korean language you think of Korea. They don't butcher the language due to it being super simplified Chinese/a small percentage english. I want to learn an African language but at times I feel it's almost worthless. I feel Africans almost have this pride of killing off their languages and replacing them with European languages.

    That guy saying we can not speak English and Swahili because of sheng,thats a lot of bs...i speak good Swahili,I can write good Swahili, and English, I speak three other languages, add sheng into the mix, I know where to use English and Swahili and be professional, I speak agent with my peers, I speak my native languages with my folks... Sheng is specifically for youths by youths, but Swahili is the more permanent between the two, you have to know Swahili to understand sheng

    Everyone I know is like that,his reasoning is if you speak one version of a language affects your other version of the same language which is not true, even in my native tribal language, the men who have underwent our right of passage have a different slang of our native that is only understood only by men who have underwent that passage, but it doesn't affect our cognitive understanding of our main language, you get what I mean?? Talk to any Kenyan youth in proper English, and Swahili, spoken or written and they will respond accordingly, engage them in sheet and they'll respond accordingly... You get what I mean?

But some of the words that might have flown over you from the radio presenter are: Gwaya - fear (from Kikuyu "guoya") BBI - building bridges intiative --it was a 2018 call to ammend the Kenyan constitution Dai - want (from swahili "dai" which means to ask for debts owed) Buya - hesitate -out of uncertainity Addisia - add (shengified English) Chunjwa - to be fired (dramatised swahili) ...the other guyz sheng is too esoteric I barely make out 1/5th of what he is saying.

    Don’t bash me and allow me to express my opinions. The reality is majority of Kenyans can’t speak english nor kiswahili fluently they only understand but can’t speak. That is from politicians to professionals, including many university lecturerers and phd holders. Even sheng’ its only spoken mainly in Nairobi mostly at the ghettos and minimally in the middle class. Kenyan richkids speak pure english or sometimes they include few swahili words. We are a confused nation when it comes to languages.

  • @esem135

    @esem135

    2 жыл бұрын

    We are not a confused nation. People just speak what they feel comfortable with. We do not owe any of the languages anything apart from our mother-tongues perhaps. You will find those who are fluent in English and not Kiswahili or vice versa, or those who are fluent in both. Level of fluency also varies both in written and spoken as well. Some are better at spoken than written or vice versa and the exceptional ones fluent at both. There is no way a Kenyan who has gone to school in Kenya for 12 years of both primary and secondary will be totally rubbish at both. Fluency is the main difference - what language you mainly speak at home will contribute to which language you are fluent in.
