Is Santa Cruz de Tenerife Worth Visiting? (Exploring the Canary Islands' second-largest city) 🇪🇸

I wrapped up my visit to Tenerife with a day of sightseeing in the island's urban capital of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. This city of a quarter-million people is a world away from the stale resort vibes of the island's south coast. Here, you'll find one of Spain's most vibrant and appealing urban centers, with verdant parks teeming with tropical plants, handsome fountains, and a laid-back seaside vibe.
From Santa Cruz, I booked a ticket on the fast ferry to the neighboring island of Gran Canaria. The 80-minute, 57 mile journey provided excellent views of the rugged north coast of Gran Canaria. From the port, it was a short 30 minute bus ride to Las Palmas, the largest city in the Canary Islands.

    Our time zone in the Canary Islands is GMT, aligned with Portugal, France and the UK. It's the spanish Peninsula that's one hour ahead.

    4:35 those trees are called Delonix regia or "Flamboyant". They are from Madagascar and are endangered in the wild, but are actually cultivated all over the world. Including many parts of North America.

    Interesting, I’ve been all over North America and have never noticed any. They are definitely unique!

    I love taking the ferry. I hope the biggest city is less touristy and shows more of actually life on these islands.

    Las Palmas will be featured in the next vlog - there are historical parts to the city, but it's largely cosmopolitan like Madrid or Barcelona!

    Why do people keep hating on "touristy"?

  • @DrifterDave

    @DrifterDave

    I think it's the yearning desire to experience something unique, and not the same thing as millions of others.

    @@DrifterDave Does the fact that millions of others have admired the Mona Lisa, make the Mona Lisa not worth seeing? More interesting to see a kid's first "painting"?

    @@DanDascalescu-dandv No - I think it’s all worth seeing and experiencing, or else those places wouldn’t be as famous as they are. But I think balancing that with some sense of having enjoyed unique experiences that few will ever share is also important. It may also be driven by personality - some enjoy quiet and low key attractions, with others enjoy the energy and bustling activity that crowds bring to an attraction. I think as long as you’re enjoying travel in the way you find most personally fulfilling, you’re set.

    Is there passport control and bag checks on the ferry like an airport?

  • @DrifterDave

    @DrifterDave

    2 жыл бұрын

    Definitely not passport checks as it’s just an interisland ferry, and I don’t recall any security screening or bag checks at all. They do check your ID when issuing your ticket but it does not need to be your passport, it can be any photo ID that matches your name with the name on the ticket.

    Definitely worth a short visit, though I wouldn't say there's a ton to see and do. I'd budget only one day for the city, in my opinion.

    Canarias no ha sido nunca una colonia, era , es España.🇪🇸 Geológicamente no es África . Las islas salieron del mar en forma de volcanes. Todas son volcanes. Los habitantes son españoles mezclados con los ántiguos habitantes procedentes del norte de África, bereberes. Y mezclados, con británicos, franceses, italianos, portugueses desde hace siglos. Ingleses e irlandeses católicos que huían de inglaterra. Una colonia es, era Hong Kong. Jamaica.India.Barbados...

    In this case, it was a long piece of patatas bravas cut into a hot dog shape, stuffed into a bun, and served.
