Great video! I actually love the artwork for RFTG, but that's because I have an affinity for the cheesy book covers of old sci-fi novels.

Great video! :) Love how focused, informative, and engaging your videos are. You really nail a lot of subtle things that a lot of other content creators fail to hit. Keep it up!

OK, you convinced me. The raygun vs. Reagan comparison alone made me think that I have to get the game there and then. Thank you.

When I got RFTG I watched your how to play. Very helpful, made going through the rule book much easier. Its really not as difficult of a game as a lot of people make it out to be.

Great video Ryan! This is an awesome game, not easy to teach though. One of my top 5 games and always will be. The app on steam with the first few expansions is a total joy! I actually enjoy the artwork and I get lost in it and the relaxing music when I play. I begin making stories from what is produced on my tableau and its engrossing! Might even inspire me to write a novel! Love your videos. A neighbor from Peterborough (now living in western Canada :-) take care.

Thanks so much, Ross! i lived in Peterborough from ages 2 to 6! Great town. It may not surprise you at all to learn that the RFTG designer based a lot of the stuff in the game on his favourite sci fi novels! Check it out: kzread.info/dash/bejne/faydw9VpipnKYKg.html

This video convinced me to finally buy it. Roll FRG is already one of my all time favs, so that's why I kept holding back on this one... on the other hand, I have reached the point where I am selling more games than buying, so your remark at the end about games that stood the test of time really resonanted with me.

Flame wars! Race > Roll. ;) The problem for me in learning came down to iconography and the Trade/Consume action was confusing. A good, small player aid helps with this.

No pushback here! Race is great! If my gummy ham-hands were better at manipulating cards, i might go for it over the dice version.

This! The icons all made sense to me the one part I couldn't quite make out was the Trade/Consume action, it was so poorly worded. The newest printing has an updated rulebook plus examples and aims to fix these issues.

Hmmm! Tough one. It's kind of like "if you had to choose: shorts or pants?" Different gear for different circumstances. But i thing Race has the edge, if only by virtue of the fact that no one ever wants to play Roll with me.

i think i got them all around the same time and i threw them all in together, so it's hard for me to distinguish between them. i haven't played the forked expansion tho.

The rulebook sucks, but if you're teaching someone, it really doesn't take long and it's not difficult to understand a few phases. Literally 90% of the board games out there have more symbols than RftG does. The iconography in RftG is actually one of the cleanest and easiest to understand. First one or two games you might fumble a bit, but if you struggle with it for longer, you're literally just not interested in playing and the icons aren't the problem at all. All the icons do is speed the game up. Listening to you rant about branching expansions is a far more costly inconvenience than the expansions could ever be. The artwork is great.

I really tried to learn it. I wanted to like it. I see why people like it but I could never see any circumstances where I or anybody in any of my gaming groups would ever play it. So no, not fun. I can teach San Juan in 5 minutes to anybody who's played a modern game and they will not only get it, but they will do reasonably well. Also worth mentioning that there has been a revised version, and 2 spin-offs of RFTG, all of which are just as terrible in their graphic design. We can only hope that at some point in the future somebody with a bit of objectivity and leadership gets a hold of this, throws away every single aspect of the graphic design and can deliver a game that is playable by the average gamer.

Fair points. San Juan does have that one game-breaking card though (i forget... was it the library?) We played a few times and were like "huh"? i poked around on BGG, and people were advising to just throw that card out of the game entirely. That's not so hot either.

San Juan is a great stepping stone ro RftG. It teaches players tableau building, cards as money, cards as goods, role selection (albeit public, not secret), and selector benefit. Production buildings versus purple buildings even prime players to distinguish between planets and devs. Then San Juan gets boring, because it's so shallow, and you're ready to move on to the real game.
