Is Putin’s invasion motivated by money? | Bill Browder

“He knew that the leverage we had over him was his foreign money… Putin is a crook. He's a criminal, and his regime is a criminal regime.”

Do you have the right to condemn Russians? Who bombed Yugoslavia, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Afghanistan...? Who hid the genocide in the Donbas for 8 years? Who has been "pumping" Ukraine with lethal weapons in recent years? Who turned a blind eye to fascist units in Ukraine? Who applauded the drug addict Zelensky, who said he wanted to create an atomic bomb? Who placed 30 biological laboratories in Ukraine to create biological weapons? Who created 10 NATO military bases in Ukraine? Why has Ukraine concentrated 150,000 soldiers on the border with Donbass? Who and why staged provocations in the cities of Bucha, Kramatorsk and is preparing new ones? Who blocked the Russian media and why? If you can think, answer yourself! Back in 2008, Putin warned NATO not to approach Russia's borders. But then they laughed at him. Putin, in order to resolve the conflict in the Donbas, proposed the "Minsk Agreements", which were not implemented by Ukraine. The media zombies you every day, even the presidents believe them… This is a war of two civilizations, Evil and Good! No one in the world doubts that the Russians will win! You shouldn't have woken up the Russian bear... This is your sunset. P.S. Think about why Russians are forbidden to show the act of the death of Ukrainian soldiers?

To my mind the biggest single factor in starting the war against Ukraine (though not the only one) is that Ukraine was too close to being able to join the EU. Image that you are a repressive autocratic regime with a 'poorer' neighbour that has massive untapped mineral and energy wealth. That neighbour is also closely socially connected with your own country. If Ukraine joined the EU then the gas fields which have big pipeline already running through them become available for western European energy companies to tap and sell huge amounts of gas within the EU trading environment. An absolute gold mine and it would cost the Russian treasury up to $100 Billion per year (more than their actual military budget) if Ukraine stole their European market. Also consider your poor cousins that you have looked down upon for generations, transforming into a more successful, richer, democratic, integrated nation where the Russian half of every Ukrainian/Russian mixed boarder family (and there are hundreds of thousands of them) starts to wonder why the Ukrainian joke hicks are suddenly comparatively wealthy and happy. You will have a lot of internal dissent brewing as well as a big hole in the budget. Answer war. If you look at the recent history of Ukraine, all of this kicked off in 2013 not from NATO (that's just another excuse), but from closer movement to the EU and the Russian resistance to it.

To my mind the biggest factor was Zelensky continuing to have the military crush the Donbas self-determination movement where 14,000 were killed over 8 years - mostly ethnic Russians. The trigger for the Donbas uprising was indeed the US overthrow of president Yanokovich, elected mainly by Eastern Ukrainians, who rebuffed NATO/EU in favour of Russia.

All Putin cares about is his money and his personal security. And don't forget that, by seizing Ukraine and other areas, Russia controls more resources & wealth. Ukraine is one of the world's major foodstuffs "bread baskets." The Soviet Union also built it's biggest ships in Ukraine, not in Russia. Case in point was the cruiser MOSKVA,... Ukrainian-built. Ukraine also designs and manufactures high quality weaponry that, in Soviet times, strengthened the USSR's armed forces. And Ukraine's access to the Black Sea remains a focus of Russia's jealousy, just as it was when Russian Empress Catharine the Great first drove Russia to its shores. Failure to get Ukraine will further impoverish the Russian (i.e., Putin's) treasury.

The war is all about the huge Yuzivska shale gas deposit in the Donbas (1.09 - 4 trillion metric metres of shale gas) - the second-largest shale gas deposit in Europe. The EU was interested in buying gas from Ukraine in order to diversify its suppliers and cut dependence on Russian gas. Ukraine has extensive gas storage facilities and pipelines, close to the EU, and such an arrangement would make a large dent in Gazprom's (Putin's) profits. Similarly, Crimea has large offshore gas deposits that Putin wanted. This war is all about Putin's Gazprom profits. That's why they are pulling back to defend Donbas. That's why Russia was funding the “separatists."

I read Bill's RED NOTICE and it was exciting, like a thriller, too. Follow the money is not a bad way to go when trying to understand anything in politics, particularly when the politician in question has accumulated as much as Putin has. I remember reading one article a while back that mentioned when Putin started out in politics, his thinking was that $15M would be enough to secure through the gray area of his work for government. Speculation is that he thought it would be enough for his future, but not enough to get him in trouble. But like most wealthy people, no amount is enough. And of course, becoming President, the sky is the limit. While starting a war is classic for a country's leader to hold power or popularity, given that this war isn't going as planned, including the severity of the sanctions, I'm worried that Putin will see his alternative as destroying Ukraine and the planet with nuclear war. For this reason, I'm especially interested in Russia's nuclear protocols, any checks and balances that are in place to stop Putin from doing it. Because of one false alarm during Soviet times, it is known then the procedure involved about three of four people making the call, all who had to be "for" nuclear retaliation, and none against. The guy on the tech level, looking at the radar, said "no" while it is believed the others above him were a yes. He is a Russian hero today. But what is it like now? Is there any reason to believe Putin is not the only no or yes that matters on the use of tactical nuclear weapons in Ukraine?

Russia's doctrine "reserving the right to use defensive nuclear weapons" should not apply. Russia is the aggressor, they have invaded a non-nuclear country, forcing them into the defensive. So in essence, if the defending country fights back successfully, they can or will be subjected to their nuclear arsenal. Based on this criteria, any nuclear power could invade any non-nuclear power so long as they don't turn the tables. As a result of this "can't lose" doctrine, Europe and the rest of the world will remain in a constant state of threat and anxiety.

It is not fair of the US to declare Russia to be the enemy of Europe. We had good relations with Russia after the cold war stopped and the iron curtain was removed. Unfortunately, this didn't suite the US and Nato - they want Russia to keep out of European relations. This cannot be right and must be corrected!! Russia has suffered in WW I and II and is now again faced with hostility and imperial intensions by the West.

After 19 years since the beginning of the invasion of Iraq, has the West forgotten this war? The Iraq war is said to have resulted in 1 million deaths the difference is russia have weapons of mass destruction A message to the future generations never make russia feel threatened the difference between "looking dangerous" and "being dangerous".Russia describes military doctrine as defensive military doctrine. With regard to nuclear weapons specifically, Russia reserves the right to use nuclear weapons: in response to the use of nuclear and other types of weapons of mass destruction against it or its allies,in case of aggression against Russia with the use of conventional weapons when the very existence of the state is threatened As of 2022, the Federation of American Scientists estimates that Russia possesses 5,977 nuclear weapons, while the United States has 5,428; Russia and the U.S. each have about 1,600 active deployed strategic nuclear warheads. Russia has the most nuclear weapons of any country, at 6,257. Of these, 1,458 are active, meaning they are already deployed, 3,039 are available (can be deployed if needed) and 1,760 are retired (out of use and awaiting dismantlement How do Russian nuclear weapons compare to the rest of the world? Russia - 6,257 America 5,550 UK - 225 France - 290 China - 350 Israel - 90 Pakistan - 165 India - 156 North Korea - 40 When you tell the truth it's always gonna be controversial.
