Thanks for putting this out on KZread John. Missed the live stream. I enjoyed most of the discussion, some great points were made on the reality of the situation and direction. Two items I wanted to pick at. -saying audio on streaming is as good disc as long as you re-level your system is a such a silly solution -3 of the 4 hosts mainly watching through Kaleidascape seemed like such a betrayal to the spirit of the conversation. That product is the most super elitist thing to own in a hobby full elitism.

Thanks for your comments! Appreciate you hanging out through the whole thing! I'll respond briefly to your criticisms: Can you clarify what you mean by a "silly solution"? All I (John) was talking about was adjusting the volume so that when you are comparing streaming to physical both sources are the same relative volume level. In other words, just turn up the volume knob for a streaming source - nothing more complicated than that. It's interesting that me saying that streaming audio can be audibly equivalent to audio from physical media was the most controversial aspect of the conversation. I occasionally prepare lossy version of mixes I've worked on for streaming platforms and have a couple of friends out in LA that do the same. When we get done with our compression pass we make sure it's audibly indistinguishable from the master as part of the QC process. Now it's possible that a streaming service may "dumb it down" from there. So, we're going to set up a blind listening test in our reference theater to compare streaming audio to the same mix on disc. Would you be interested in participating in the listening test? We are doing an open "casting call" for the event. We want to see once and for all if streaming audio is as bad as everyone says by testing on state of the art gear under controlled listening conditions. RE: Kaleidescape. Agree that it's a pricey option. Did it seem like we were suggesting that Kaleidescape was a "streaming solution"? Our point was that it was an option for enthusiasts to get physical media quality with the convenience of streaming, not that it's a "streaming platform." Steve and I run The Screening Room, and as we say at the top, we install mid-to-high level home theaters. The Kaleidescape systems are in our demo rooms. Note that we admit it's expensive! Last comment here is that we took suggestions for topics from home theater groups and Kaleidescape was near the top of the list. Anyhow, curious to hear your thoughts about the above and thanks again for listening! :)

For a reference as far as younger people, my oldest son is 30 and has a larger physical copy collection of movies than I do, most in UHD Blu-ray.

It seems like there two basic kinds of movie viewers, The sort that watch a movie once and then never again and people like me, that will watch a treasured film over and over. We are the type who buy DVDs... Lately I found myself waiting for a DVD release that never arrives (Buster Scruggs and The Queens Gambit) … Upon release DVD's are often priced at $39.95. After a few months they end up in the bargain bin for $9.95. But even at $9.95 there is often enough profit to go around. As I stated in another post, If they deny publication of DVD's it legitimizes piracy...

I was not suprised at all about the Best Buy announcement. I knew it was ending in Jan of this year. I live in the 3rd largest city in my state and we had 2 Best Buys. One was remodeled over a year ago and physical media was removed. Then this year in March, the other store that carried physical media was closed. I ask if the other store would start carrying physical media and I was told no. I knew right then that physical media was going to be going away at Best Buy. No business would quit selling something in the 3rd largest city in the state if they were not planning on dropping it from all stores eventually. Here is my video on the sad day: kzread.info/dash/bejne/p56B26eimbzRiJc.html

Wish I knew where to find someone to professionally calibrate my oled tv here in Minnesota. Maybe I’ll get that new Myers disk they gave away at the end

The argument that "every die hard fan has the DVDs so we can leave out the bonus features" that the studios give is so moronic honestly. Maybe people don't want to keep two copies for no reason?

They need to phase out dvd and lower the price of Blu-ray.
