I’m not surprised that Carol was the one to initiate the campaign for Hal Prince. Carol and her daughter Carrie wrote a play together called Hollywood Arms about Carol’s traumatic childhood growing up with alcoholic parents. Carrie sadly died before the show was finished and Carol had to painfully finish it without her. When it came time to find a director for the show, Carol reached out to Hal Prince for recommendations. Hal asked to read the script and upon reading it offered to direct the show himself. He knew that this was a hard story for Carol to be telling, even more so after having lost her daughter, and wanted to make sure her story was handled with care. Carol said working with Hal on this show helped her both personally and professionally and helped her through the grieving process. I will always have respect for him after that and I agree with Carol. Rename the Majestic to the Prince!

This next February is my next trip to NY for a weekend of Broadway shows. Phantom was part of my list but they announced the closing and I was anxious because they hadn't release the February tickets so last month I did a crazy thing where I got in a flight in the morning to NYC JUST to see Phantom and then got into another plane to go home (Puerto Rico) in the same day! For them to announce the new closing day weeks later. I don't regret what I did in that 24 hr trip because I loved it and fell in love with the production but it was money I could have saved.

I have to admit that I spent the first 2/3 of this entry in a sort of mesmerized state, watching that little piece of lint or fluff that was in your beard and spent the last 1/3, watching to see if it would come back (it didn.t). They have a fabulous section for Phantom, including a crystal installation where the mask is visible at a certain angle, it is made up of the exact number of crystals as performances up to the original closing date - they will now have to add more!!

Breaks my heart!!! The full company (cast, crew, musicians, and creative team) out of a job but also this show being a national treasure landmark to NYC!!! Broadway will never be the same again without it. On a personal note as an actor myself, I've auditioned for the show several times. I just feel like I failed as a performer. To be part of this family and singing those songs on the Majestic stage ... even yet to play The Phantom!!! So Not fair. So upsetting.

Must admit my theory before watching it was that if Bad Cinderella isn't well received on Broadway then they might extend Phantom again to keep ALW running something... but renovations makes sense as a blocker. Thanks as always for keeping us up to date! I've never seen Phantom feeling like it'll be around forever and feel I'll only be inspired to go (in London) if they've announced a closing so I get the rush.

I had forgotten that Her Majesty's Theatre in the West End was owned by ALW. Bizarrely I do know about the history of its name, which I looked up when they announced it was changing. It changes between His/Her Majesty or King's/Queen's Theatre depending on the monarch and has done since it was built. Partly because the land the theatre is on belongs to the Crown Estate. For your non-Brit fans, the Crown Estate = Royal Family. Enough with the history, your explanation about Broadway theatre closing for renovations made me think of the Victoria Palace in the West End. Which is one of Cameron Mackintosh's theatres. That closed after Billy Elliot for a huge Refurb. And it looks fantastic now. But the refurb was also used as a justification for some of the expensive ticket prices for Hamilton when it opened. The refurb also ran late and pushed back the start of Hamilton by a few weeks (I remember an anxious wait as I had tickets for the end of December and it eventually opened a week before we went). I love seeing theatres restored and improved, but sadly these costs usually get passed on to theatre goers. I hope that whatever goes into the Broadway theatre next (maybe with a name change), it doesn't price people out of tickets even more than now.

What I don't get is how ANGRY a lot of people seem to be about the closing, and saying that that they are upset they won't be able to see again a show again they list themselves as seeing _multiple_ times over _decades_. That means they were incredibly fortunate that a show they loved so much ran so long and they had the opportunity to enjoy it on so many opportunities. That is an incredible blessing. But no, it's all "Cameron Mackintosh is so cheap. He's making our lives miserable because he only cares about profit." Um, that's what a producer does. A show isn't a charitable gift, it's a financial enterprise. And he's kept the show running for DECADES. I mean, he doesn't owe it to anyone to run this show forever, whether he could afford to do it or not. I'm not saying he isn't cheap, or that he doesn't care only about money. I totally buy that. I just don't see how that surprises anyone about any producer or any commercial theatrical enterprise. I don't understand why they can't see that they aren't being shafted now, but that they have had a wonderful opportunity (that they reaped the benefit of) for longer than a number of adults have even been alive. Why are't they just grateful for the many memories? Baffles me.

@Mattbrain In all fairness, I think the reasons why ‘purists’ are upset are because this show in particular is pretty difficult to restage (and difficult for amateurs to do), as it is generally more dependent on its staging than many other shows (and unlike Les Mis). The modern cost of remounting a similar production would also have to be taken into account (eg. if the show had been pitched now it is unlikely that it would have been greenlit or have reached the same amount of success). If you enjoy something you’d want it to be presented in the best way, and currently the Bway staging (from what I’ve seen personally, both online and anecdotally) is generally agreed on to be the best presentation of the show thus far. The fact that the current version is unlikely to ever return or be approved for production again is still a loss. In addition, the current producers are still fairly strict as to how new restagings are presented, so I doubt there will be any particularly innovative productions mounted anytime soon. That being said I would personally love to see a (good) restaged production (since none of the non- replica stagings so far have really impressed me), but I understand where people are coming from.

I'm New York in March with some friends and Phantom was our first choice, that's how I discovered it was closing (and consequently your channel). So I ended up booking tickets to see Funny Girl, then I had a dilemma when they announced the extension. Thankfully I was saved from regret by the eyewatering prices of the Phantom tickets. The entire central stalls are £350! Tickets for the same price I paid for front row Funny Girl tickets are way up in the middle of the upper gallery 😬 and I can get great Phantom tickets in London for £100. Screw that, I'll take Lea Michele from the front row!

I think it's a bit disengenuous to say they deliberately lied. As you said, it's only because of the surge for tickets and christmas etc that it got an extension for a final few weeks. Given the amount that the production has been losing (even the 'new' London production is not making money) there was no chance of it extending long term. I think it's hilarious that the 'phans' think they keep a show going because they go often, when it really makes no difference at all. The theatre has 1500 seats to fill every night! I appreciate you telling me that, the thing is is that I'm striving to make this a functional career, and while the tickets are gifted (as they are to all of the critics who attend), the travel and surrounding costs are not. Nobody is obligated to tip anything after watching my videos (less than 1% of viewers do), but it is greatly appreciated that some feel grateful enough and are able to do so, my content is enjoyed otherwise for free. With regards to theatre fans who would love to attend the theatre, have you watched my recent video detailing 30 different affordable ticket schemes? Hopefully this may help, and equally I always hope my review videos provide people more insight as to whether they want to spend their money. Hope this all makes sense.

He’s attending these shows as a critic, not a fan - that’s why he’s “gifted” the tickets. For each of these shows he attends for “free” he is also spending hours on research, writing, filming, and editing a review - so it’s not really free, is it? The only thing that’s free is his content, on KZread.

@@the3rdquark and I get that but making a comment saying “any spare cash, send it to me for a super thanks” doesn’t agree with me. Sorry

@@lisamurray3871 again, nobody has to, I'm just making people aware of the feature they likely don't know exists, like a barista with a tip jar. Nobody enjoys asking for money, but this is my job.

What does that mean? There are new shows on Broadway all the time.
