Is Ozempic a Magic Pill? Johann Hari weighs its risks & benefits

In one survey, 47% of Americans said they would take Ozempic or similar drugs, which promise to help people lose 5-24% of their bodyweight - but what's the catch? After Johann Hari began taking Ozempic in 2023, he began investigating how Ozempic affects brain chemistry, the causes of obesity in the western world, and the risks of weight-loss drugs compared to those of obesity. Johann also shares some unexpected secondary consequences of the rise of this new class of weight-loss drugs.

In addition to the currency exchange difference, eating in a Japanese restaurant is cheaper because you are NOT allowed to leave a tip. It is considered an insult to tip someone who is just doing their job.

@@angelabroom2861 I was not taking insulin while I was on the other drugs. I was taking the other drugs under the care of an endocrinologist. We both agreed not to try any other drugs and to put me back on insulin. I don't have to take very high amounts to keep my blood sugar under control. I also eat a very low carb diet.

Love this, had his book in my Amazon basket. But he lost me when he over glamorised Japan, like many Westerners do, with a rather narrow understanding (methinks only…) The irony is they think anything American is so ‘cool’ most young ppl have gone from miso and fish as breakfast to bread and 🥛.

I'll share my own experience with this class of drug. I've tried Wegovy/Saxenda/Ozempic/Trulicity and can say the worst side effects were from Oz. While I did lose weight on each of these, the most success was on Ozempic but it was not without a cost. I had a hard time going to gym, being active other than biking, walking, and yard work and I couldn't get into lifting. Despite this I felt soreness in some muscles even while a large portion of my weight loss was from muscle loss (Ozempic butt is real). Also weight loss is not guaranteed on any of these meds. Just like a caffeine adapted individual that needs multiple cups to get going vs the typical 1 cup person, if your brain adapts, it can stop. Since I adapt quite quickly to caffeine and other stimulants (I can easily drink several monsters a day and a coffee before bed), it's my working theory that my lifting ceiling on one stimulant might affect the efficacy of this drug. Final point is the x factor or supply and insurance shenanigans. I had to move from Ozempic when suddenly CVS could not fulfil my script and basically told me to source it on my own. I ended up switching to Trulicity while being on waitlists for Wegovy or Ozempic. During that switch (right before Thanksgiving) I ended up regaining about 10 lbs extremely quickly, and without much correlation to intake, which stayed about the same. I heard as much from online groups and was fearful and tried to meet that issue headon, but it was a morale killer to gain 2 lbs overnight, and 5 lbs in a week while eating what noom said should be my weight loss zone. I have regained stability now am working out more regularly than I have been able to in years.

What is the psychological cause of obesity? Why isn’t this addressed? The experience of stress as an adult, caused by factors like financial insecurity & mental illness, has been linked to an increased risk of obesity. Up to 1/2 of adults attending specialist obesity services may have experienced childhood adversity or trauma in adult life. My family & friends that had weight loss surgery didn’t keep it off & some are now alcoholics w/worse mental health & some starting on Ozempic.

While the Japanese in Japan might not be clinically obese, about 11% of them have Type 2 Diabetes. Asians get diabetes more often than white non-Hispanics do in the US. Over 13% of Japanese have Diabetes or Glucose Intolerance. When I was a practicing midwife, some of the worst cases of Gestational Diabetes were in thin Asian women. GLP-1s are the main treatment for Asians, thin or not, who have diabetes. The dosages will be lower, but the effects are miraculous for the patient with Type 2 Diabetes.

I mean, Ozempic sounds like a good drug and could be used for people with significant problems... but I feel like individual responsibility is probably a better (and healthier) solution. Rather than trying to solve your eating problems (and presumable lethargy problems) with a drug, why not eat healthier and exercise more? Make America a more walkable country so we're encouraged to move more and do healthy things.

You are incorrect. Women are _purposefully_ taking GLP-1s to restore their fertility and _are_ taking the risks of not knowing what will happen should they get pregnant on the meds. The recommendations are to stop 2 months before trying to conceive, but that isn't happening. Many women will do _anything_ to have a baby, including not knowing exactly what the future holds for that baby because of their desire. A quick search of "Ozempic Babies Infertility" will drown you in anecdotal stories of conception on GLP-1s and also advice on how to get the meds from your infertility doctor. Women aren't stupid, you are right. We know what we want and we will sometimes do anything to get it.

Andrew, are you aware than Johann has appeared on about half dozen interviews before yours? You should have done some homework and listened to those interviews. If you had done your homework, then you could have asked Johann some original questions. Instead, we just get a rehash of the same stuff that Johann talked about on all the other podcasts. What is the point of this? By the way, I like Johann a lot. I just wish that interviewers could take their job seriously and think of original questions.

so, this book is an ozempic commercial? All this told me is that in 8 years when the patent is expired we will know the side effects and just how good or bad this drug really is. He kept saying their are bad side effects and then never detailed any, just minimized them by saying they don't mean anything to him. Also not one mention of the class action lawsuit for this drug and whether or not it might be part of the side effects he isn't diving into.

My friend takes this, and does not have the vomiting symptom, reports she has never had vomiting induced since starting drug. She is a radiology tech, and knows it delays her gastric emptying, and reduces her dopamine response to food. She said she doesn’t enjoy food as much and now eats a normal portion of food. She used to be a chronic overeater, so for her she feels great on it. Some people get certain symptoms and others don’t. So a blanket statement of this makes you vomit and therefore of course you’ll loose weight is an overstatement and over generalization. However If a person still tries to over eat on this drug it inevitably will induce vomiting. I think the bigger take away is, it makes you need to eat less and/or eat a normal portion.

C'mon, it's time to go out of the mainstream hype and that box to look at healthier, more natural, much cheaper remedies. Stop making Big Pharma rich, ok? Get smart and raise your consciousness.
