    Ottawa for sure is the most beautiful city in Canada👍! Rivers, Rideau Canal, river locks, Parliament, fire works, Winterlude festival, tulip festival…… Weather wise; global warming made Ottawa one of the best living cities in Canada this day. Winter is getting shorter and shorter each year and the coldest is now below 20 degrees compared with below 40 thirty years ago! Summer will be very hot though but only for four to six weeks. It's true that most of the restaurants in Ottawa are not worth what you paid for! It's no harm to dine out once in a blue moon🤣! Cooking at home is the best choice. Ottawa is my hometown for 50 years😊 I did live in Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver before; every city for two to ten years. Ottawa is my final destination……☀️

    As an Ottawa resident, I do think this city is boring, but sometimes I like it like that. If you love night life, Ottawa is not the place to be. If you like cheap activities that are fun, Ottawa is not the place to be; it's a very calm city, so not much happens.

    You just didn't live in winter in Parry Sound XD. We are without a car, so all entertainment events are limited to the downtown, which is very small. And because of the snow, you can't go anywhere at all, you're just stuck in an apartment. I was in Ottawa, and I want to move there, I really liked the city. Every man to his own taste.

    There are plenty of "cheap" activities that are fun. What are you talking about? The only people who call Ottawa boring, are people who tend to be boring themselves. There's lots to enjoy, nightlife is not the only thing that's fun.

    I absolutely love this city especially for its green space as there are tons of bike trails and parks. Most roads are bike friendly as well. The city is busy, but not as crazy as Toronto or Montreal. Ottawa has an e-scooter sharing service in the downtown core which makes it fun and easy to get around (we used to have a bike sharing service).

I have one question if you can help me with or may be make a video about it( I know you already make separate videos about both cities) but I’m looking for a comparaison for a family desiring to move to Ottawa or Montreal,but unable to take a decision . Two young anglophones kids, an anglophone father and a francophobe mother. OTTAWA or MONTTEAL ?

  • @MakeThatChange

    @MakeThatChange

    Жыл бұрын

    Hey Haythan! Thank you for the kind words! We will be making a video about best cities for families soon. But at this time - what does the father and mother do? I would go where there are more job opportunities given the professions. At the first sight, Ottawa seems to be a slightly better option given most of the family is anglophones, however if the father’s profession doesn’t require French at all, it might be worth considering Montreal too. How much does your family like going out for dinners, cultural events ( concerts, arts, etc)?- Montreal is more rich with arts and culture, while Ottawa has a lot of outdoors. Hope it helps!

    Another plus point to Ottawa is the multiculturalism. I’m surprised you said it’s the least ethnically diverse, but I don’t know the statistics. You can find all kinds of restaurants here; Lebanese, Syrian, Chinese, Vietnamese, Turkish, Indian and and and! Plus most ethnic groups have their own festivals in the summer. Edited to add I looked it up and yes, you are correct about diversity. Ottawa IS less diverse than other large Canadian cities. It is however still way more diverse than most Canadian small towns.

    Back in the day, no building could be taller than the Peace Tower. This ‘rule’ has been relaxed over time but the legacy of a lack of skyscrapers remains. It gives the city a more European vibe. I moved here at the age of 23 after university and am now 58 and retired. As a younger person I, like many, threw a fair bit of shade on the city as it has long been in the shadow of Toronto and Montreal. At my age I now appreciate it much more. Plus the city has evolved enormously in the last 30+ years. Ottawa has far more amenities than many similar sized or larger cities by virtue of being the capital. I’ve always thought it Canada’s largest small town. There is a ton of fun things to do year round but the haters will continue to hate. (I’m looking at you, truckers.) It can no longer be said that the best thing about Ottawa is the train to Montreal. People who complain or are bored clearly do not make the effort to seek out fun stuff. The person who is bored in Ottawa will also be bored in Toronto or Montreal. Any place is what you make it. But no, it’s not perfect. There are still challenges. Snow removal is generally not bad but could be better. As well, the roads are not great. There are plenty of potholes that emerge each spring after the thaw. Originally from Victoria, only it and Vancouver have bragging rights over Ottawa, IMO. Four million in greater Ottawa-Gatineau? I’m not sure about that.

    @@MakeThatChange I live in Ottawa. If you want to be the coldest you've ever been in your life, just move here. If you want to be non-conformist, be strong. This city is full of people who were against the Freedom Convoy - that was endorsed around the world. The City of Ottawa Council is questionable to say the least. The last mayor, Jim Watson, authorized an illegal search and seize without a Bench Warrant - to get a warrant you must appear before a judge and it must be authorized as being for good reason. The council all endorsed searching and seizing the fuel (petrol, gas) from the Truckers - in hopes of freezing them out in -40F weather. Then they wanted the Children's Aid to go in and remove the children from the convoy. These kids were healthy and happy - played street hockey on Parliament Hill with their parents and friends. As an ex-Court Reporter & Clerk of Courts in southern Ontario (Ottawa's the capital of Canada and in the province of Ontario), I knew that CAS wouldn't take the children because the precedent was set that the Trucker families often travel together with their children. A lot of the residents here are extremely selfish individuals who do not have open hearts. The roads are insufficient for the amount of traffic - something else that's decided by council. The transit system is pitiful. Living 20 mins. from downtown could take you two buses to get there. Then council authorized a Light Rail Transit system which has come of the tracks too many times and still isn't safe or properly operational. I'm writing this to let you know the reality of Ottawa. One of the really awful lawyers I was employed by used to say, isn't it nice the rest of Canada pays for our parks?! I think that too is typical of the attitude here - "we deserve it." They're still talking about giving Wellington Street, in front of the parliament buildings to the government because that's where the legal and peaceful protest took place.

    "most educated" yet our municipal voter turnout allowed a mayor in that is just as corrupt as the last one. Ottawa is NOT walkable, cars are mandatory, and the public transit is being systematically underfunded alongside the ever-growing debt trap that is the LRT system. It is a suburban hellscape of a city with no change in direction from the last mayor of Ottawa. We are in for a rough ride for anyone who isn't in the top 10% of earning households. Yes, if you're occupying masters/PhD positions, you're likely earning a good living. The problem is, the entire city catered to those people, and when COVID decimated the downtown core, it cratered the downtown economy to the point that businesses couldn't survive. Ottawa is nice, but it's gonna get bad in the next 10 years. If you weren't in already, you're gonna have a very hard time trying.

You need to like museum or go outside in the forest. If you don't have familly there like me, this is not the 1st place to go eastern Canada. For me is a boring place. Too big to be cute 1.2 millions people in metropolitain area (Quebec and Ontario include) and too quiet to party on. A familly kind of little big city.

But the boring atmosphere of Ottawa mixed with its unforgiving winters and (in my opinion) the very bland and weird people really just is...meh. But the winters in it though is genuinely the main reason why I would avoid Ottawa.

    Does anybody else think Ottawa's drivers act more dangerously in crosswalks than Montrealers? Does that extend to the province level (Ontario vs Quebec)? That really bothered me because safety is a prominent feature of Montreal for me. I've never felt threatened neither by traffic nor by crime in Montreal. I'll travel to Toronto soon (late this month) and I will confirm whether all Ontarians are reckless drivers or not!

  • @MakeThatChange

    @MakeThatChange

    Personally we haven’t noticed that. We are surprised you say Montreal is safe. As a driver, one thing that always strikes me when coming back to Montreal from Toronto, is how much more drivers cut you off and don’t use blinkers when changing lanes. It always feels like Montreal highway driving is more dangerous that in Toronto.

    @@MakeThatChange There were two incidents during my stay in Ottawa. The first was at the traffic light nearby the "I love Ottawa" sign, and the other one was close to the Parliament Building. In both occasions, I was almost hit by a car that passed by a red traffic light. Your comment made me consider that it isn't the city's fault, but where exactly in the city I was. As you said, Montrealers drive like crazy on highways and the Guy-Concordia crosswalk is particularly dangerous. However, I still believe the "free right turn on red light" introduces certain unpredictability for pedestrians. A good point for Ottawa, though, is the cycling infrastructure (even without a BIXI-like service). Everything in Ottawa is kinda far if you are not willing to drive (as discussed in this video kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZGlm1JqqqJzNqpM.html). You better get a bike for sightseeing, or you might get frustrated (especially because public transit is lacking compared to Montreal).

    Healthcare system in Ottawa is horrible most people are on waiting lists for a family doctor for years and they don't accept new patients. It's a great place to visit for museums or events. Generally it is a boring government / Post Secondary education city which is great if you like more peace and quiet. Many parts of Ottawa are not safe at all anymore though so just do your research on the area first if you plan to move here because our police are too busy at sitting at donut shops, giving out tickets or bullying peaceful protesters to stop any of the real crime.

    @@Booz2020 hey! I'd say that Ottawa like any other city has its homeless population, although it is mostly concentrated on one part of the city: downtown. More specifically Rideau street. This is in part due to its high traffic & vecinity to the homeless shelter. Otherwise, you don't see entire villages with tents as you do in some of the cities you've mentioned. Keep in mind that Ottawa's population is barely over a million.
