Is Oil Actually A Health Food? Taking A Closer Look!

Ойын-сауық

Oil is often regarded as such a highly nutritious food, but is it really? Today we dive deep and the answer might surprise you! In this video we look at the nutritional content of oil compared to some other common foods. I also address the fact that I give processed protein powder a pass while shunning oils for the very same reason.
Let me know your thoughts on the video and on oils in the comments section down below! Do you consume oil? What are your rules around it?
This video might help you realize that oil isn't as healthy as it has been marketed to be and it likely isn't helping you towards your goals.
This is just my experience and my thoughts, if you are an oil lover and are doing feeling don't let me stop you. If I'm totally off and wrong, let me know as well.

It’s funny how most people seem to have unanimously accepted that refined carbs are unhealthy, but for some reason they think refined fat is fine? Doesn’t make sense to me. Dr. Esselstyn was my first foray into oil free cooking and I haven’t gone back. Total game changer for me. Thanks for the awesome video :)

Totally. At some point when i was trying to gain some fat by putting lots of oil in my baking (sourdough bread) & cooking to no avail. Instead of getting fat, i got sick. When i drop the oil to minimum (10g) in a loaf of bread dough or pizza dough, i gain my fat by eating more food.

Can you give a link to these sources please? I am not sure whether the research takes into context oil consumed with whole foods not juts a tbsp of oil with a little bit of bread. This is not a meal and the metabolism differs when food it combined. A lot of negative effects of soy were observed when using isolated phytoestrogens. That does not give an accurate representation of what happens when consumong phytoestrogens in whole food form. The same with oil. Not one just eats pure oil or pure oil with bread soley. I would like to see studies where the oil is mixed with food high in fiber and polyphenols. As some studies have shown that fiber can reduce triglycerides for example.

Agreed! I want to preserve my endothelial cells, which line our arteries. When the arteries are clogged with oils and fats- don't even get me started on fried food- we set ourselves up for a very sick life as elderly people. I don't want that! Check out the videos by Dr Esselstyn (a cardiologist and an octogenarian) and others that give the science backed studies and pictures proving the damage of oils to the body. It's eye opening! The damage can be reversed though and that is what I hope to accomplish for me and my health.

I'm vegan, don't use oils, but when sometimes eating outside becomes a necessity, I go for less-oil options. Personally, I feel that having 2-4 olives in my meal rather than a spoonful of olive oil makes me feel much lighter and helps in portion control, rather than going for a heavy, oil loaded option. Also the fact that even a bit of oil in my food makes me wanna throw up made me quit oils for the most part. And I get much more nutrition from other sources like nuts, seeds and olives than I ever do with oils! Overly processed foods is also a no go for me. So thanks for making this video!

I used to be strictly oil free (even avoiding raisins or other dried fruit that said oil in the ingredients list). This year I decided to challenge this food fear and know enjoy a bit oil oil in my cooking (about a tsp or so for sautéing veg) from time to time. I agree its not a necessary food and we can get higher quality fats from whole food sources. For me its a benefit mentally to be able to add it to food without fear but If you are not avoiding oil out of fear then I think thats fine too

I think cooking without oil enables me to live the most "carefree" about my food consumption that I've been in my life. Prior to becoming vegetarian I worried about restricting my consumption of foods I knew were bad for me because they were high fat, or they made me feel slightly sick after eating them because I didn't want to gain weight. After becoming vegetarian, and then vegan, I felt much more like I could eat whatever I wanted. That said, even with the healthy changes in my diet, it was still possible to put on extra pounds by eating too much fat and processed foods like sugar and white flour (hello 2020). Now that I try to cook the majority of my food WFPB I truly can eat as much as I want. It doesn't mean I don't ever have the occasional store bought treat, or bake myself a tasty scone with vegan butter and white flour, or make a fried tofu treat, but it's truly only once a week or less rather than every day. I do still use oil, but MUCH less often and I feel better than ever at 46.

Amen!!! I don't buy oil at all. I would rather use whole olives with a salad or pasta, whole avocado for some healthy fat. Peanut butter (limited) and flax, chia seed give me good fats. Happy man without all the added empty calories and "slick" taste!!

So very helpful Derek, thank you! So after losing weight I started body building to fill in some sagging skin (so far, so good 😁👍🏻👍🏻) but I was getting hungrier as I was working out twice as long. Well, I was adding olive oil or sunflower oil to stir fry’s or roasted veggies. Yikes! I saw the scale going up and I know it was more than muscle gains! 😳 Now I have cut way back like 75% back and I’m pleased with the results. And I totally agree with you-an avocado or seeds tastes way better and more bang for the buck as far as nutrients and volume! Keep showing us these videos please-I personally learn a lot. Have a fabulous week and hello to Crystal! ♥️🌱♥️

So here's something you didn't mention. The toxic effects of long term use of oil on the human body. Yes it's calorific but it's also atherosclerotic and causes liver damage due to fatty liver syndrome. These are due to the blood getting over saturated with lipids where the body has to store them somewhere.

@@silentbliss7666 I've tried that. Didn't work for me. That doesn't mean it doesn't work for others. Evoo from a reputable source really is beneficial to most people. The things Derek left out was the amount of polyphenols it has and how important those are to us. He also didn't mention that evoo activates Sirt2 which is extremely important for longevity. Theres a reason why 2 of the 5 blue zones consume about a liter a week.

Thank you, Derek for a great topic and video! Totally agree that quantity and quality are the most important in your daily meal plan ))). I'm an ayurvedic consultant and I can definitely say that not everyone will feel great w/o oil! That depends on case by case. The slimmer you are (vata constitution) the more oil your body needs otherwise your digestion will be ruined. And one more thing - oil plays an important role in vitamins and micro nutrients transferring. 🙏
