my starter was in fridge and freezer like 2-3years without using, and then within 3 days popped into life, now learning how to make her stronger, i am home baking and follow the Jack method, feeding the scraps as needed, no discard

I am sooooo glad I found this video, I have sourdough that was hiding in the back of my fridge for over 2 years. Looked exactly like this in the video and smelled like strong beer with a hint of vinegar. On to life support for this starter, thank you so much!!!!

@@livingbreadbaker it came back! And then at two weeks I got busy with life and should have put it in the fridge but I forgot it for a couple days and it molded. Not to be discouraged though, I saved the other bit of starter just in case it didn't work. Its name is/was Lazarus.

I got one starter older than a year. I think it'll be fine. That's why I'm searching for "dough starter short videos" "dough how revive" what to do with it, because I have to make bread. Being trying to and while so busy I neglected a good cup in the fridge, it has like a finger and a half of what looks like soy sauce lol. Lets see how I do with it.

Great tutorial, thank you. One question about first refreshing. What do you do if the refresh doesn’t do anything after 24hrs? Feed it more or just wait more time?

Also, does the jar lid need to be air tight or slightly open?

How does this compare to starting fresh? Would it be better to throw out the neglected starter and start from scratch with flour and water vs. refreshing the old one like you did in the video 3-5 times?

  • @livingbreadbaker

Good question! This method brings back a neglected starter in 3-5 days. It also allows the old cultivated microorganisms to repopulate. For me, this particular starter had strong sentimental value as well. Starting from scratch takes 7-10 days to get activity. And usually it needs a bit longer to have more mature activity. New starters take time to build strong regular activity after they activate

I am desperate for help!! I have a SD starter going, 3rd attempt, this time it has activated once, I’m on day 8! Once I did a discard and fed it, that’s been the end of activity. Now it had the consistency of warm pudding. I’m not sure what to do? How much to discard, how much to feed? Just flour or flour and water? I’m so lost

@@livingbreadbaker hi thank you for your response. I was starting a new one. At one time I had several jars going trying different flours and methods. After a week they all got black mold. I have not tried again since. I will definitely take a look at the link you shared and 🤞🏼 I can get one going. Homesteading is a bit more difficult than I was expecting

@@lisalopez9639 yes, it can definitely be a challenge. I’m not sure what method you tried but mine has worked well for me reliably. If there’s not enough discarding at certain points, it can lead to mold

Hi there! I’d always say it’s worth a try if there’s no mold. Take a small piece and hydrate it with water, breaking it apart until it’s a consistency like ranch or batter. Then feed it like I did in the video. I hope it works out!

I've been baking with sourdough for nearly 10 years and haven't had an explosion yet. 😅 I'm not that aggressive when mixing and use many different jars. A jar that is not made for canning like a repurposed or upcycled jar would be a concern.
