    Thanks for the video and all the others you have produced. I took this great info which allowed me like you said to breakdown the cost and the amount of fertilizer and decided to make a tracker for the brands being sold locally. Based on this, it showed me that I was wasting a lot of money. I found fertilizers at Lowes that are dropping 81% N at $2.73 per 1K sqft. Amazing, thanks

    LCN, you were my intro to lawn care when I bought my first house 8yrs ago. After a bad experience with an old bag of fert the previous owner had left in the garage, probably circa 2004 vintage, burnt patches lasted months, Milo was like training wheels. Once shortages hit 3yrs ago in soCal I was forced to run the numbers. Realized Bandini (synthetic brand at HD) was much cheaper/app than Milo (only $2.40/1,000 sq ft). Also seems like the modern ferts don’t burn the lawn as easily (or I’m more experienced) so it’s my go-too. Cheap and always in stock. Mix in Ironite pellets to really dominate 💪 Thanks LCN for the many years of instruction.

    Weed and grasses both use N to do photosynthesis, so yes, if you neglect weed control you're essentially feeding the weeds by putting down strictly N and no broadleaf or other weed controls. The genius behind this is get the weeds under control first, then work at thickening up your existing turf grass by dethatching, aerating once per year if soil compaction is an issue, overseed early spring and mid-fall, regular irrigation for the lawn to help it fight through dormancy in the dog days of summer, and you'll build a thick turf that can outcompete the vast majority of the weed seed that finds its way to your soil. Once you've built that base, you can then much more easily spot control weed infestations with a hand sprayer, rather than having to throw down big bags of weed and feed or hose-end broadcast spraying weed control products where 90% of it lands on things that aren't weeds (thus a waste of money).

    There's a couple of things I forgot that I did years ago that really made my lawn pop. One is to spray your lawn with cheap dish soap after you fertilize. The soap breaks the water tension in the soil so that your fertilizer will be assimilated even better. I learned that from some farmers up in Indiana. They bought soap by the 55 gallon drum for their fields when they planted. Also, I want to get a bunch of black cow and spread it out in my lawn. It's like black gold, Texas tea.

    The sodium laurel (or laureth) sulphate is the ingredient most responsible for this. It is also found in liquid aerate products for lawns. It chemically loosens hard soils and promotes water (and fert) absorption into the root zone. I find this to be useful before summer drought- so the rain we do get absorbs before running off or evaporating.

    Great video. It’s worth noting the coverage rate on the bag can be misleading because different companies will calculate that number using different application rates. If the goal is to compare across brands, it’s best to calculate the coverage using your desired application rate to ensure apples to apples.

    Yes they do like to play with that app rate but that's why I also use the nitrogen per 1000 as a test. Can't hide from that with a low app rate when you're only at 4-6% N

    A year ago I bought 500 pounds of ammonium sulfate at a farmer rate of 20 cents per pound. It comes literally in a 500 pound bag called a tote. This makes my app rate per 1000 come out to 71 cents, and will last years on my huge lawn.

    I am curious to see (and hear) how many people use milorganite on large size lawns. My lawn is 50k, that means I have to use 20 bags of the product per fertilization. Therefore, I have been sticking with inorganic fertilizer but I supplement with humic + micronutrient spraying every 6-8 wks. LCN I am curious to hear what do you suggest for large size lawns.

    I did the math for 500sq ft, just because I like doing math. When I did it came out to be .384 lbs of N. I was curious if I did the math right. 12.8/1,000 sqft. 12.8*.5= .384 Nitrogen. Did I do the math correct? I thought that if was .76 lbs of nitrogen/1,000 sqft then when I used the same 12.8*.5 it would still give me .76 lbs of nitrogen. Thank you for any help with this.

    Would you use Milorganite AND Flagship in the same app, or just one or the other? If you could do a full application of both at the same time (and not burn your lawn), is there a substantial benefit to this, or should you just do one of them?

    It's a question I get alot and the answer is no I would not recommend both at the same time. That would not burn the lawn but it's just overkill. Choose one or the other and see what results you get from each one independently. Keep them at least 4 weeks apart.

    Please help me understand , I just purchased a Scotts Max green fertilizer that covers 10,000 sq ft and that's the sq footage I have on my lawn front and back combined, it has a anylisis of a 27-0-2 , it costed me $66.00 for the bag, the Milorginite bag in my big box store that covers 2,500 sq ft at $24.00 per bag and the analysis is 6-4-0 per bag so I will need to get 4 bags to cover 10,000 sq ft so that's $120 for a lot less Nitrogen? please advice!

    i stopped using it after i realized that’s it’s just baked and pelleted human waste from the sewer system in milwaukee. i thought it’s more ‘processed’ until one day i dissolved some in water. the next day it reeked like ‘fresh’ sewer. the higher price is yet another reason to avoid it. genius idea by milwaukee (and others) to get rid of their ever accumulating sewer waste but i refuse to store it in my lawn.

    Sort of confused about the pricing. Home Depot by me is selling for $20-$25 per 32# bag. But Stein’s (garden store) is selling, what looks to be the same bag, for $8.99. Why the big difference?

  • @BigBeardedBubba
    @BigBeardedBubba Жыл бұрын

    Honestly I like to put down milo at a higher rate One bag per 2000 sq ft which gets you a bit more iron and just under a pound of Nitrogen per 1K -so with tax you’re looking at roughly $10 per 1K sq ft. I use it a few times a year in between chemical fertilizers. Liquids are definitely cheaper but also the type/types of N and delivery matter. Spoon feeding with liquids is hard to beat as you can combine it with other bio stimulants and foliar iron. For simplicity and ease for the average homeowner a coated time release (or fast release in some cases like Spring) granular is hard to beat. It’s a crappy way to do post emergent weed control though.

    And once you figure out the lay of your lawn and buy fertilizer a few times, and have the math down, it just gets easier when you buy fertilizer. Last year I played with buying cheaper products from the farm supply place. staying with the same rates as always. Results were not near as good. I know theoretically I should have had the same results based on the bag advertised analysis. Not the case. Back to milo and or the other name brands that bring success for me.
