Is Metroid: Zero Mission a Great Remake?

Ойындар

Metroid: Zero Mission is the 2004 remake to the 1986 Metroid on NES, becoming the first remake in the 2D Metroid series. As someone who thought that the skeleton and ideas for the original game was there, Zero Mission made me excited to see what new hardware & a better grasp on the franchise could do to the game. Is Metroid: Zero Mission a 5-star remake? Let's restart.

    i think we have hit a new low, the fact that every youtube channel these days goes on a begging spree to subscribe to their channel and beg for money on their "patron" instaed of you know getting a real life job instead, but swearing at us? do you really think that will improve your situation by verbally abusing your viewers? that is the saddest thing i have seen so far smdh this is petty.

    Ahh, I must've confused that last section with the script! I believe the Chozo statues still fulfill that same purpose and they're very frequent through Zebes too, so I need to keep checking over my scripts next time That's a fair assertion too - however I sometimes have 2 different feelings of lost; one instance is that enjoyable time where I know the solution is somewhere and just need to keep a keen eye to progress further, whereas the other is me having gone to several places again and again, to no avail. Which fortunately has happened lesser so with my time further spent in the 2D Metroids.

    I think that Zero Mission. Is the best way to play the original Metroid for fans who didn't play Metroid when it first came out. The fact that it also includes the original Metroid as a bonus for beating the game is a great idea. But as someone who has been playing Metroid games for around 10 years, and always gave up on the original, Zero Mission is an amazing way to have a taste of the original without the clunk.

I was very surprised to see that half star in there, but you reasoned it so well and I respect that it's you standing up for your opinion against what the popular consensus may be (which, as we all know looking at the reception to Dread, which I personally hated, is not always accurate). Bravo guy.

    When you are done beating it, I suggest you look up how to get Varia Suit early and also how to do Ridley before Kraid, then try playing it that way. It's fun to see how open this game really is after beating it the normal way. And then if you want a real challenge now that you are familiar with some of the sequence breaks and advanced techniques, try a Low% run! Each item and expansion count as 1%, and at least 7% is always required (Morph ball, bombs, missiles, Ice beam, and the 3 ??? items [which are the three that eventually unlock when you get your suit back after the stealth section]) after that you have 8 more items that you can pick and choose to make it easier, like the Power grip, Long Beam, missile and health expansions, etc. Its a fun and strategic way to play. Its tough though, so definitely don't try it on hard, and if you end up finding it too difficult, then try it on easy (but there is no special ending for easy). Often, I will decide to use Screw Attack on my Low % runs because it helps in key areas even though its one of the most easily skipped upgrades since its not required and isn't effective on bosses (however it does help protect you from the final boss' missiles, so it makes it slightly easier, that's my main reason for it). Low% is cool like that because its not a true low% and allows you to add some helpful items on top of the lowest 7% which also make progression very different depending on what ones you choose. So you can get upgrades that help in the areas you struggle with the most. IE: you are bad at wall jumping, so you get the high jump or the power grip.

    Yea, the Zero Suit section and subsequent 100% clean-up are probably the weakest parts of this fantastic game. But to me, the short length is perfect for repeated playthroughs. I lost count on how many times I have beaten it by now. Plus, sequence breaks and skips add even more to the replayability. I just recently fell in love with that aspect of Metroid but it firmly cements Zero Mission and Super as my Top 2 favorites in the series.

  • @GBDupree

    @GBDupree

    Жыл бұрын

    @@LukerYT Oh yeah, the sequence breaks in this game are fantastic. For Super Metroid, a lot of the sequence breaks seem unintentional and performed with glitches, so there is this unnatural feeling for progression there, like you couldn't have possibly figured that out without seeing a video detailing the exact frames you have to input your moves to make the glitch work. Though in that case, the variety of exploration becomes nearly infinite when you know all those tricks, but its really hard. Whereas Zero Mission's largely feel like they are full intended and natural, and they really open up the game. The game seems linear, especially with the Chozo statues giving you markers on where to go, yet all but the first statue can be skipped, and the items can be obtained in a larger number of ways than at first glance. You can even go to Ridley's lair first without ever having to step foot in Kraid's lair. Making the order of the game's upgrades vary wildly with that alone. And of course, you should also try out the Low% run (the game only asks for 15%, but the speedrun goes as low as something like 4%) its an incredible challenge that is fully doable without glitches, it just requires you to know how to explore the areas without every upgrade you would normally have to explore them, so map knowledge is needed. I consider Zero Mission to have the best sequence breaks in the series because its all designed and intended, and works so well. Its a masterclass of game and level design, whereas Super is still really good for opening it up, but if you only played with intended sequence breaks it wouldn't be as open as ZM.

    I enjoy the 100% cleanup. If you have a good game plan from the beginning of the game, the final cleanup flows smoothly through a handful of old areas without needing to go out of your way for anything. All of the speedrunning shortcuts lend so much to it. This one is my favorite Metroid to 100% speedrun

    Both games were fantastic however I still think Metroid Fusion was better than Zero Mission. ZM was a remake of a story we already knew and although it polished up the original and included great new puzzle elements like the ball mode cannon, it wasn't as exciting or engaging as Metroid Fusion to me, especially with the SA-X being such a constant terrifying threat. ZM was also bound by the limitations of the map and level design of the original game which felt more restricting than MF. In terms of the game mechanics, ZM honestly felt like the game that came before Fusion canonically it is, but it did not improve on Fusion even though it was released afterwards. So happy to have run into both of these games in my childhood and have many fond memories of trying to work through the bosses and puzzles.

You did get the easy pattern but there are multiple fireball patterns and sometimes he changes them mid fight but if you get the easy version then it feels like an extreme push over. The others are tighter wave patterns that start low and alternate high low in short intervals making standing in front of him a very bad idea.

I always considered the waypoints and inability to choose where you want to go yourself in Fusion and Zero Mission as negatives, but I can see that I just wasn't the target audience in mind when making these changes. Just know that Zero Mission is the easiest game in the series. However that is good because your first playthrough should just be you familiarizing with the map so that you can then try out all the crazy sequence breaks in the game for the next playthrough. Perhaps you want to see what its like to go complete Ridley's lair first before ever stepping foot in Kraid's. Or maybe try a low% run which is incredibly difficult, every upgrade and expansion counts as 1% (whereas Fusion only counted expansions as percentage for example) so you will often have to decide whether or not you want to get something like the high jump or screw attack, or forego that for another Missile or health expansion, the game only asks for 15% to get the special ending pic. However, its possible to go as low as 4% iirc (though that might require actual glitches to do, I can't remember) which would only be: Morph Ball, Bombs, Missiles, Ice Beam (which also means no long beam, and I think it skips the mystery upgrades which are Space Jump, Plasma Beam, and Gravity Suit somehow), which is really cool that its possible!

    Zero Mission i think is a great game, its a perfect first Metroid game for anyone i think. However, that is because its short and easy. Super is easy to get lost in and Fusion can be really hard. I have played all the Metroid games multiple times, its my favorite game series. I love Zero Mission despite its short and easy flaws because while i can do a normal run in an hour and 100% in 3, and its way too easy, it still has tons of elements to cater to a veteran like me. You can fight Ridley before Kraid using a secret route, get items like the Varia suit and Screw Attack early, and go through the games adjectives in almost any order you want once your skilled enough at Metroid. I still havent done a hard mode playthrough or a 15% run despite the fact that it being short has led to me probably playing Zero Mission the most out of them all despite it not being my favorite (that goes to Metroid Prime). I may soon though, maybe both kinds of run will provide that challenge Zero Mission lacks.

  • @LukerYT

    I'd concur that Zero MIssion would be the first Metroid game for a new palyer to get into the series with, it toes the line of exploration and action perfectly compared to the other two. It definitely feels like a game I should come back to after some months away to try and learn about the secret paths because there's a lot more that meets the eye than what my initial playthrough showed me, which is exciting! I had no idea about the Ridley fight first, for instance, which would make for a really interesting 'alternate' playthrough. And the hard mode option is a great accessibility feature I completely missed out on in this review, which I think sounds promising as an idea, I just wonder what elements it changes and to what extent are they more difficult, as I'd hate for parts to get so hard that they actively hamper the game experience.

  • @MrTreesSapling

    @MrTreesSapling

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@LukerYT From what i heard, all hard mode does is cut your health and missile ammo in half, each energy tank and expansion giving half their original amount. I am unware of level design or boss changes. But having less would make the battles an actual challenge, i dread Robo Ridley like that though, i remember back in the day he was so hard for me, not the most pleasant memories to revisit, then again, Dread did great to revisit the fear of the SA-X somewhat. Both Hard mode and 15% gives special end pictures which means 15% was an intended secret hard mode of sorts, there are actually a ton of special end screens. I dont think any of them have story elements like the ones you unlock if you link Fusion and Zero Mission though.

  • @GBDupree

    @GBDupree

    Жыл бұрын

    @@LukerYT Hard mode does cut health and ammo like the other comment says, but it also adds more Metroids to Tourian, and it makes some enemies swap out to their harder variants, like the Geemers become Zoomers sometimes, or the biggest one: the Skree become their armored versions. This is significant because they are one of the first enemies you encounter and for some reason are super powerful. So the second screen in the game will likely get you killed. I don't know why its like that because for some reason none of the other enemies feel so strong, in fact most of the hard Mode feels pretty similar to Normal, if only marginally harder, but the Skree feel like they do way more damage and are encountered early on. So just avoid them the best you can and the rest of it won't feel as incredibly hard. It's bizarre, but other than that Hard mode isn't all that hard, it just feels like Fusion difficulty. I'd say that Normal Ridley first is slightly harder than regular normal, then Hard is slightly harder than that, then Hard Ridley first is next, then Normal low%, then Hard Low%. And I do recommend trying at least Normal Low% (or if you aren't confident, then Easy Low%, but there is no special ending for doing that) since it really does change how you play as you have to strategize more, it sort of feels like playing a resident evil game with its item management strategy except if you chose to never use the item box. Plus the minimum is 7 or so %, but the game only asks for 15% so there is some leeway, which actually allows for more variety as every attempt could be very different because of what items you pick, whereas a true Low% would be more linear. Sometimes you want to get screw attack because that makes Mecha Ridley trivial (more so because it make you immune to his lasers if you are constantly space jumping in corner, so you never really need to take damage) Or you want to do the bare minimum upgrades, but spend the last few %s to get a bunch of Missile and health. Perhaps try to play without the Power Grip, it really shows how different things are when you can't just grab ledges.

    IMO Zero Mission was what Fusion shoulda been. Fusion wanted to be a more story heavy Metroid with the game play of Super, but it became too locked into the linear progression of its story. In Fusion I'd often want to revisit other sections after I got a new power up or realized what I need do to collect a item but it was locked off. While ZM allows you to explore and revisit past places at your own leisure while still being more directed and having a bit more of a story. Also congrats on the KZread algorithm choosing you for it's own arcane and unfathomable reasons.

    My first game system was the GBA, and I played it for a good 10 years exclusively (my parents weren't as invested into me playing video games as I was) GBA was home to the perfection of pixel art Metroid. Zero Mission and Fusion are both wonderful adventures, and there could have been plenty more, I think a port of Super Metroid was possible on GBA hardware. I wish there had been more games- Samus Returns would have been excellently updated on the GBA, using the Fusion engine. There should have been more adventures of Samus on the GBA, maybe even a prequel about the fall of Zebes, maybe where you are a Chozo working to help evacuate Samus and the Chozo during the fall of Zebes.

    Never did get around to finishing zero mission. I mentioned on the super metroid video I'm not too big on the NES Metroid in comparison to the other titles, and while it is *definitely* a better experience as far as I played (up until around post-kraid) it competed for my gameboy with not only Fusion, but some games I've had since childhood as well. Learning there's a new stealth segment is reason enough for me to slot it in the old boy and give it a proper playthrough. Thanks to youtube for showing me your channel, and thanks to you for the refreshing reviews.

    The thing is that Zero Mission is the easiest in the series and can be completed quickly, so I definitely recommend playing it just because it shouldn't take too much time. But I also recommend that you then play again, but either try out various sequence breaks (like beating Ridley before Kraid) or even simple tricks like skipping all the Chozo Map statues (except the first one can't be skipped). Then you could try for one of the under 2 hours endings. Or if you want the game to be really challenging, go for a Low% run. Unlike in Fusion which only counts expansions as a %, ZM counts upgrades as well. So for the game's 15% run (the maximum required for the ending pic) you need to pick and choose which upgrades you can't live without while sacrificing enough so that you have room for the Missile and Health Expansions you might need. This is likely why the game is so Easy normally, because once you remove all the unnecessary upgrades and expansions, suddenly the enemies feel much more imposing. It took me weeks to beat Ridley, I got stuck on the Metroids for about a month (I had to build a house of frozen Metroids to protect me from the unfrozen ones and then slowly chip away at their numbers, it really made me appreciate them as a threat which no other Metroid game did), same for Mother Brain, of course that was also on hard mode (which gets its own separate ending compared to normal low%), but Normal mode is far more reasonable to complete. Also I believe the lowest possible % is either 7% or 4%, I think 4% requires glitches to do because the extra 3% come from the ??? upgrades (Gravity Suit, Plasma beam, and Space Jump) that also act as keys early in the game. Its crazy.

    I think as far as new content goes, one aspect that you didn't touch on (and honestly couldn't have after one playthrough) is the alternate endings which goes hand in hand with speedrunning. And I know, it's not for everyone and most people won't even go for it. But in my opinion speedrunning is a major component of Zero Mission. Many would say Super is the best at this in the franchise but a lot of its tricks and shortcuts are kind of accidental or quirks of the design. Zero Mission on the other hand is meticulously designed for speedrunning. There are tons of hidden shortcuts and places a skilled player can speed boost and shinespark through to shave off minutes of game time, places a typical player wouldn't even imagine can be boosted through. And because the original game is quite short, this game also ends up being short (also because this was a Game Boy Advance game) which a normal player might find to be a knock against it but the developers instead used it to their advantage to try to bring more replayability in challenge runs rather than making a single playthrough the defining experience. Having the game be so short makes it easier to pick up for a quick play or replay over and over for a speedrunner, but it's also chock full of things to find in hidden places if completionism is more your jam, and there are also endings for low percentage runs if you want to challenge yourself. To me, Super is fantastic, but Zero Mission is the pinnacle of the 2d franchise.

    I appreciate your perspective on thinking getting lost in a game means it needs improvement in hints, but that really is a matter of taste. The way I see it, if I'm not lost in a game a few times, it's too simple. Just like if I never die in a game, it's too easy. A game should require you to scratch your head and experiment to some degree. At least that's how I best enjoy them. Again, it's a matter of taste. That's one reason I consider Fusion the weakest of the 2D games since Super. I never once got lost in it, and that means it wasn't scratching that exploration itch.

  • @LukerYT

    I really appreciate your perspective - I get a fair few comments that are funny in isolation about how my opinion on crypticness with the OG Metroid is a skill issue, but I genuinely much prefer to hear someone say it's a preference thing, and it for sure is! I really enjoyed Return of Samus because of how linear it was, but I should also recognise that there are people that love the style of Metroidvania/game. My main thing IMO is giving the player the options to decide how much or little they want explicit guidance from the game, and that improves accessibility and challenge to cater to everyone.

  • @Phoboskomboa

    @Phoboskomboa

    @@LukerYT Oh, absolutely OG Metroid was too cryptic. It was early days and they were still learning the basics of good game design. But, one thing it had going for it over every other game in the franchise is length. I never had a guide as a kid, and so you mentioned (accurately) as a negative for Zero Mission is that you beat it in 3 hours, but it took me years of going back every few months and trying to finally beat the first game. That's a style of design that doesn't mesh with our modern times where we have dozens of shows and games vying for our attention. But when I was 8 years old and only got 1 or 2 videogames a year at Christmas, I didn't see that as a bad thing.

    I don't know why you are so down on the new content, considering you only spoke about the extra section at the end of the game and not all the other new content. The Metroid (NES) portion of the game is also teeming with extra content throughout and its all fantastic. Perhaps the Charge Beam boss isn't amazing, but the graboid boss that jumps out of the acid and you have to use the zipline to jump across to hit, and various other minibosses are all really fun. The added content like the Morph ball canons add a lot to exploration, and the extra areas besides the pirate ship are all nice and not overdone. Personally, I have no problem with the ship, since the stealth sequence is pretty short and I like it well enough, and then after you get your suit it becomes a brand-new area to explore giving you plenty of time to use your new abilities as well as give you an area to explore for the first time with all your abilities. Because typically you explore areas with barely anything and so its starts off linear and then when you get new abilities you re-explore those same areas, but you never get to see what it would be like to have an area designed with you having all your abilities ahead of time, and how exploration is different because of that. Really, not only is the new content overall fantastic, even if there are some controversial inclusions, but the fact that there are so many new inclusions is amazing as well. Typically remakes have little to no new content, usually they actually have LESS content (like the Resident Evil 2 and 3 remakes), or the new content is very minimal and barely adds anything (like the Dead Space remake adding a couple rooms to connect areas where there use to be a loading screen, and maybe a couple of rooms for side missions, but not new areas, just singular rooms) or simply a replacement of content rather than additional. So for this game to have all the original content remade with new stuff added on top is exceptional, and really shouldn't be understated.

    I greatly respect you perspective on things but I feel like you skipped over some crucial stuff that should be factored in. Of all the Metroid games, Zero Mission hands downs does THE BEST postgame reward/extra system. Not only does it have the most expansive art gallery achieved by ending times/ item collection ( which promotes playthroughs with different criteria) of any 2D Metroid, you can also unlock a sound test to listen to all the music in the game AND unlock the original NES Metroid to play. Samus Returns didn't even do any of that despite being more than capable. Also, via link cable you can even unlock the fusion art gallery as well. That's not much but it's still a pretty cool extra. And there's also a Time Attack mode that can be unlocked too. While this is nothing now, back then it was great for timing yourself in a playthrough. I love Metroid Dread but I darn near 100% it on my first playthrough, which I wasn't happy about because one of the components of Metroid I love is exploring. So to find everything so easily was disappointing. With Zero Mission you DEFINITELY have to explore to 100% it. There are rooms you would never know existed if you didn't and honestly that's just cool to me. Having everything out in the open is boring AF. And spoiler alert to anyone who hasn't played Dread but despite the game being a great experience, it is extremely bare bones in this regard to postgame/extras content as opposed to Zero Mission, which is just crazy in this day and age. So as far as the other half star that you feel it doesn't deserve within actual gameplay itself (which is fine) , I feel like the content included for the post game reward/extras MORE than makes up for it easily. No other Metroid game has done this better, literally. The only games in the entire franchise that could surpasses this would be Prime 2 and 3. 2 because it has that multiplayer mode which is just all around a kickass crazy fun addition, and one that needs to come back for Prime 4 since it can now have online support. And 3 because there's just a lot to unlock in general and there are a lot little secrets in the game. But other than that, nothing beats Zero Mission in that area.

    Hey, thank you so much for this comment! It's really put a light on how I do these videos and what I'll be doing to approach them in the future - as you can see right now, my current playstyle through the games are just an initial playthrough and it's left at that, which can have its downsides like in the instances you show. If I did play the game more I could've uncovered this, but I think for the 2D Metroids so far I've kept it to a full playthrough of exposure which can be alright except in the case of Zero Mission. As it stands I'll probably play the only game I've yet to play (Dread) as I've played each other one, which is to say a full first playthrough and collect thoughts from there, but I will say when I rank all the 2D Metroids that how I've played them factors into it quite heavily due to this, as I can imagine with Dread/Samus Returns they benefit more from my playstyle than the other entries do. I'm also unsure what I'll be covering after the 2D Metroids, I'm looking to maybe cover the Prime games, but if/when I do, I'll likely try and 100% them and go into really long detail about the game to make sure no stone is left unturned. Thank you for the heads up!
