member pricing and overall overpricing really takes advantage of newer collectors which is so saddening

I absolutely loathe overpricing/memberpricing and am someone who has sold a lot of very popular cards for normal prices. It always makes me happy to sell people their dream cards for a reasonable price, but I’ve also had to deal with so much crap because of this. Just last month I dropped my Nayeon (Twice) collection and sold my Devil Nayeon for 8€; a completely normal price which it should ideally be going for. When the buyer received it, they accused me of having sold them a fake card. I had literally pulled that Nayeon from the album years ago so I knew for a fact that it wasn’t fake, and asked them to tell me why they thought that. Later they apologized and explained that they’re a new collector who doesn’t know much, and their friend told them that "Devil Nayeon is worth so much more and if it was sold for that price it HAD to be fake". I couldn’t believe that I had to defend myself because I don’t overprice my cards. It’s so, so unfortunate that kpop collecting has come to this. No matter how they try to spin it, in my opinion there is no excuse for overpricing and especially memberpricing. It is just plain greed from people who know that they can take advantage of someone else’s desperation and/or inexperience.

I heard a similar story about Bunny Taeyong card (the one from Resonance album I think) and the seller just sent a tiktok of them unboxing the album

4:07 on top of this tho many goms who are caught in the act of using unsavory tactics to fill spots immediately victimize themselves by saying they’re the ones who pay out of pocket to cover extra claims so it’s somehow okay for them to continue to do this which just makes it even more weird bc literally no one is making you cover or host in general

i noticed that member pricing and ‘x must be claimed with y’ is unfortunately common for some countries- i started bst in the philippines and i honestly thought that was the norm because i dont see discussions in the ph bst community about that kind of pricing. i see member pricing a lot with the boyz goms based in ph. i just came to that realization after i moved to another country. after this i do agree especially that it takes advantage of newer collectors. it may even discourage them from collecting anymore. (editing note, just forgot one word lol)

A few months ago I decided that I was going to only buy what was available at Target and the rest I would buy second hand. Companies are just doing too many versions and some of my biases seem to avoid me like the plague. I decided I would rather wait and buy photocard sets from Mercari Japan than try my luck. This means that I now have to deal with member pricing. I also live in fear that my bias might hold something or look extra cute in a photocard. I am going to take this time to vent about my frustration with collecting Seventeen's Face The Sun photocards. Why are they so expensive? The album is not out of print and they sold a whole bunch so there should be lots of photocards in circulation. I know I am eventually going to have to bite the bullet and buy them, but I refuse to pay more than it cost to buy the album they came from for the full set. I might make exceptions for certain cards as a last resort, but those will be bought with a coupon.

Fair video. I don’t like member pricing, and I have come to hate group orders. The issue is genuinely the people paying these high prices, and of course kpop companies that deliberately make these cards random to encourage fans to buy more-if we’re talking exploitation, it’s from them. I can understand the annoyance in having 20 people message you to claim one member and other members have zero claims, at a certain point people need to manage expectations. Claim X with Y is what individual buyers would have to do anyway if they wanted to guarantee certain pob pulls anyway. I quit hardcore collecting last year and have heavy regrets, so yeah, overpricing is loathsome.

from my experience hosting gos for misc sets its a good tactic to ask joiners to claim y + x , I personally rarely do this based on member - more so based on popular cards. set sellers usually combine more wanted pcs with less wanted pcs, I dont see the issue with goms doing the same in a smaller scale. everyone in the community has some pcs for sale that are not so wanted, its impossible to avoid and this weight (in my opinion) has to be shared between everyone who collects otherwise no one will fill any gos ever..same for pob+inc claims, I dont want those extra inclusions I will have to sell them later but so does the gom, so we share the weight and each person gets 1 thing they want and 1 thing they dont. I also take my share of unwanted claims in gos when asked and in my opinion as long as the pc pairings arent crazy expensive its an ok tactic to use

A big ol fat YES to everything you said. Member pricing is so scummy and GOMs who group popular + less popular members together for claims are also scummy. After being in the collecting community for several years now, I try to help as many new collectors as possible because I know how easy it is for people to be taken advantage of if they see a highly sought after card. It's definitely frustrating seeing behavior like this continue and I try to help collectors steer clear of the bad apples. With that being said, I have also built myself a community of like minded and very nice people who I host GOs for and trade with, and having a close community like that where we help each other out has helped me maintain the fun and exciting part of collecting.

To be fair this is very real and also putting your thoughts like this is very interesting to hear. I am myself not super familiar with the whole stealing claims and such but I am very familiar with memberpricing. At first I only noticed this in Asia, ktwit, mercari japan and so on, however lately, especially with the bigger groups it´s everywhere and as infuriating it is as a person who has collected for multiple years I cannot even think how awful it must be for new collectors who may due to this feel scared to even start a collection in the first place.

I love this video is a 2-in-1 : gundam building and collecting commentary😂 on the topic, I understand member pricing for limited or out-of-print cards, because the popular members would be more scarce and therefore supply and demand would raise the price. But for cards that just came out or are always available, I think member pricing is very ridiculous! It’s highly unlikely that a card is difficult to find for that reason. I think member pricing has gone off the rails in the past 2 or so years, as far as I can tell, because even groups that give a handful of cards per album, like twice, are having large gaps between card prices per member😤 it’s making cards seem more valuable than they actually are and causing a domino effect across all groups, which, to me, is frustrating.

I collect Soobin and even tho I "understand" memberpricing and I don't complain when his cards are more expensive than other members, I find SOOOO annoying when gom's say "if you claim taehyun or kai you have priority to claim choi line" LIKE ????? why would I want to have items of members I don't collect??

i hate the stealing spot it happened to me recently and i wasn't claiming a super popular member and what was worst is the fact that the gom didn't even say anything about it not in her info or on the post itself and i ended up arguing with her and just left the group order as a hole because i was angry about it because i was just checking if the spots where filled out and suddenly i was on different batch and there was no grantee that it will be filled... so i just got out and unfollowed her because it left a bad taste in my mouth
