    I’m not a big BMW guy myself but if I had to choose I would pick the 540i purely for A) running costs B) servicing costs

    Yeah and to achieve M5s sort of power (and still be slower) you'll also have a very unreliable car. There is no way having 700hp out of non built 3.0 6 cylinder with meth be as reliable as M5. I bet in the long run you'll be spending much more on the 540i when things start going. And you have a car that looks like a 520d...

    Utter bollocks. If you can’t afford to run the m5 you can’t afford to run the 540i. No bmw fan would take a 540i over an m5 if they were offered because of servicing costs.

    I used to own 535i then M5 F10 and now F90 M5 competition. I never regret paying extra on my car. The M is always special compare to the non M

    Classic B58 heat soaking, it is a great engine though. M5 would be my choice. Chassis dynamics, brakes and engine are the difference. That's worth the 8k to me, but each to their own! Can't believe M5s are now 38k, bargain!!

    Also, don't forget that the 540i is highly modified in order to make that type of power, and modified cars are ALWAYS a nightmare to keep, especially in reliability. And the B58 is not made for that kind of power. It even has a lower capacity, and it will get much, much more consumed than the S63, making the same level of power. If you have the money, the M5 is 100% more worth it.

    @@TheAlbaniaGamingwrong, with an intake manifold it will not heat soak. It’s just ethanol and a bigger turbo, that’s not highly modified at all in the bmw world. Literally 6k in mods. The b58 is a true 700-1000 hp daily

    @@techbutter2877 I can tell you for certain my mates stage 2 m5 he had was a rocket ship for example bro I am one of the only people on the planet who's pushed a b9 car to its limits. Appreciate the b58 engine has been around for a while but the s58 is the one now that car downpipe alone pushes over 750hp on pump that to me it's nuts no b58 is touching that

    That 540i with that wheel and tyre combo not only looks sick, but also looks like it could really lay it down on a twisty B road. Tuned 700hp B58 the 540i gets my vote.

    M lights have always struggled in the handling department which is why the M cars exist, entirely different support. It'd see a -20s on a good track vs the M5, but for the cost you can't discredit it

    Close. Very close. I suppose if you factor in running costs,the ease of fixing / servicing a B58 over a 4.4 V8 and then the notoriously good reliability of the B58 then the 540i becomes a very interesting prospect indeed.

    @@SH7SH7SH7 I don’t know, the price of big V8 super saloons has been going one way for a while now,especially now the used car market is levelling out. Add in running M car costs, big insurance hikes it all adds up and even people with deeper pockets than average are feeling it. Undeniably the far more frugal B58 when tuned is 8/10ths of an M5 in terms of power, that’s enough for most people. The M car is the more special car though obviously.

    @@huiputka1 Why does it need to be built exactly? They are more than strong enough. It’s one of BMW’s most over engineered engines of modern times in fact. Does a B58 suddenly implode when it surpasses 699 bhp? I’ve seen them get way more and not go bang. Strange. Incidentally if you think a B58 is in any way similar to maintaining an 8 cylinder Twin Turbo 4.4 V8 I think you need to give your head a big old wobble. After you pay triple for a major M5 service that might in part show you just the fundamental and simple basic running costs of each in stock form or we would all be driving round in them instead of M140/240/340 etc. Notoriously brutal to run even when running well and that’s before you start to piss about modifying them. They plummet like a brick because they are killers on the wallet. Try a V12 M760Li like my friend did. 90k loss in under 3 years. Running costs of most houses! Big BMWs especially M cars are the bargains of the century until something goes wrong. Then need half the value of the car again to fix it! ( I’ll let you do the research to price up a replacement M5 engine over a B58, a price most don’t have tucked away for a rainy day).ANY modified car is susceptible to breaking but to say a modded 540 is going to be more costly than a modded M5 in terms of like for like running or hypothetical engine failure is just daft! Like I say, go price 2 engines up.

    One massive advantage of the 540i over the M? Wagon! Yes you can get a 540i wagon, breathe on it for a proper under the radar sleeper. Loving the stance of both these cars, maybe more so the 540i with its pothole proof wheel/tyre combo.

    I feel like this B58 had a strong showing here but was ultimately just becoming more and more heat soaked. The M5 appeared to have better repeatability of performance which would make sense as bmw crams as many heat exchangers as they can in the M cars which is often why they weigh quite a bit more. B58 showing how versatile it is once again.

    2nd Launch from the M5 was mint. Even though on paper it looks to have slightly less legs, that secret M power pulls its weight over the imposter. But you get the 540i and you could probably run it for 2 years with the difference

    well, you can also compare the "price hold" of both cars, then it isnt as impressive since the m5 comp will hold its value ALOT better than a totally clapped out 540i.

    @@lewiscannon8213 M5 would definitely be more reliable with that Stage 1 than the more than double hp from stock b58 with a meth. Not to mention that the 540i is clearly still slower with all these mods. M5 can easily get to 1000hp+ with the same mods as the 540i. You'd be a fool to spend as much on a 540i when you can get a M5 for pretty much the same money.

The crazy thing is for me my dream is that F90 M5 but an option I was looking at is that 540i and the fact that it can keep with that M5 and saving 8-10 bags is nuts.     M5 all day. That extra 8,500 is well worth it to have the M suspension, interior, and actual M engine. Plus the potential for the S63 for more power with just a stage 2 tune, maybe even an ethanol map, would mop that 540i. Oh yeah, and you keep resale value 😄

    Daaymnnnn didnt except so close roll races! And those 0-60 times are mad impressive for both cars. I was about to trade my e92 m3 for 540i last summer but still glad i didnt. Even tho it might still be my next car in future but those non m cars doesnt have the same character as real M cars. Its easily faster when tuned but the feeling is a different story. Anyway great content keep it up!!

    I think the difference was that the m5 can do multiple runs not being tuned to the max like the 540i. Probably heat playing a factor.

    That 540i must of been suffering from heat soak after the first run as it was much closer. Either that or Trap speed of the m5 suggests it’s got more power than quoted

    I've got an f36 440i gran coupe running a flowmax 2.5+ turbo which is up at around 700 crank on e85. M cars are different class of chassis all together. It fantastic what can be done with the b58 cars but they will never outhandle an m car mod for mod

    A B58 smashes any M car when modified highly bro - this is so well documented, not sure where you have been. In fact a M car isn’t even in the conversation and the main rival is a DAZA RS3 to who is quicker over the quarter mile - both platforms in the 7’s - no M car is close bro

    @dash-kt7uf in a straight line. If that's the only criteria that you measure a cars performance then I think you're missing the point. Like I say. I have a b58 running decent power and I've driven many m cars and the chassis and soul of an M just isn't there with my car. A tuner car they are better and over the 8th and 1/4 but that's not everything. I'm not bashing the b58 cars. I own one. But they aren't better all round cars than their M version, no matter how much money you put into them.

They are unmistakenbly awesome performing cars but there is more to the automotive life than winning every stoplight race. There was a lot of trash talking of B58 boys with their freshly bought stage 1, Alixpress Akrapovic exhaust tipped, crackle tune M140i's here in the tuner scene in the NL. Talking trash about a well respected Honda tuner with a K20T MR2 and 4x4 EG Civic for driving a shitbox that they mostly take to drag events and not the street. Thats the kind of people i really don't like. Yeah B58 is great and all but not like you've accomplished everything in life 😂

    The B58 easily can perform with 700bhp run after run, but it needs an aftermarket intake manifold (by Wagner for example). Then the IATs stay down low until the last run.

    I guess it all comes down to engine size and torque figures with the m5 having more displacement and torque, that being said was the 540i suffering from heat soak after all those runs? Great racing though and comparison

    Great Sportsmanship, all respect. M5 S63 Exhaust is just beast, 540i Exhaust from that venerable B58 hits the spot too lol. Between the two I would choose M5 however I enjoy that B58 as well.

    Yeaa the M5 definitely showed why it’s more superior here, although the 540 was close you have to spend more just to get close to what a tuned M5 can do imagine if the M5 had 10k in it or even 5k

    The B58 had to pass Toyota’s stringent quality control. No wonder BMW desperately wanted a partnership with Toyota. Not only did BMW get Toyota’s knowledge on how to build a great inline-6, they also get to use Toyota’s hydrogen technology. And Toyota in return got a new sports car.

    B58 is german art of engineering and nothing to do with Toyota. Toyota just uses the B58 engine from Germany it has nothing to do with Japan.

    There is so much more to a real M car than power. I never really understood, until I wrote off my tuned/modified M140i ... I thought it was a great car, even if it was a little bit lairy and unstable for the power (455bhp/634nm) with it's open diff and standard adaptive suspension. I did upgrade the brakes to M Performance dimpled and grooved. I then got a standard OG M2. The difference was immediate. The steering should not have felt any different, they are both electric racks right ? The M2 steering was completely different, and while not Lotus Elise quality, it was much better than the numb M140i. The damping was on another level, and the whole stability, no pogo over bumps, no wobbly back end, no snaking under acceleration, the diff helping put the power down evenly. The whole feeling was on another level, no doubt down to different (M3/M4) suspension, and the lack of sound deadening in M cars, making you hear and feel everything. Yes the OG M2 is slower in a straight line than my M140i, but it's much faster in real terms, on a twisty, undulating, REAL road.

    I run a 2017 G30 540i msport xdrive at 545bhp and 707nm and that's not at max capacity either.. Effortless power with the mods I've done all in under 30k.540 b58 especially in xdrive gets the power down well especially when you have a stage 3 gearbox xhp flash.

    It's one sided more than I thought it would be 😂 . Was thinking it would be back and forth victories . But isn't the M5 got a little more better set up on the gearbox from the M factory . Basically the same by name but set just a little more special .? But I do like the 540I sound . Sounds pretty damn good .

    Love me the b58, it's almost bulletproof but as an f90 owner; that s63 is limitless on power gains more when compared to no M engines + luxury, looks and swag. You got the wallet 99 percent you'll be pimping f90 s63.

    Nice comparison. I think it would be a nice comparison to bring in the m550i. As a previous 17:51 owner of a B58 540i and a current owner of the N63tu2 m550i, the way they feel when moving fast (over 100mph) is so different. I haven't had the opportunity to drive an m5, but I would pick the m550i over the 540i, concerning performance. If I'm after reliability, there's nothing like the B58. Both cars are phenomenal. It's the once choice that's a win win, regardless
