Is Lotus' Four-Cylinder AUTO as Good as the Supercharged V6?

The Lotus Emira is one of the most important sports cars of the year. It represents Lotus' attempt at remaining true to its lightweight, analog roots while building cars for the modern era. But in order to be relevant in 2023, the Emira needs something Lotus has never offered: a good automatic transmission option. For that, they turned to an unlikely partner: AMG. By supplying a new 2-liter Turbo engine and matching dual-clutch gearbox, AMG provides the modernity Lotus needs, but does it work as well as it needs to? We went to Hethel, the home of Lotus, to find out.

What's not so great is a blip of the throttle, spotting a traffic light change, decelerating the rpm, and a laggy upshift punches your back into the seat at a couple g's. It's a very intense coupla seconds that requires mopping your brow after.

Think we all knew the center of gravity would be lower, higher sense of speed with a torque dump but turbo lag and finding the would be a bit of work vs NA. It's also too expensive, a 1 year old v6 is nuch cheaper and basically unused by flippers caught out. Cayman doesn't look as good but is the better car.

I've extensively driven a CLA45 AMG which has the same engine and transmission. Engine was pretty wild and definitely has to be driven hard to be enjoyed, so I think it would fit well in a more pure sports car like this. However the DCT was disappointing. To be fair, I prefer real manuals, but I went in with an open mind. It was a bit herky jerky at parking lot speeds and there were some occasional rough shifts, which were mild annoyances that I could deal with, but the gearing was terrible. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd were ridiculously short, meanwhile 6th, 7th, and 8th were stupidly tall. 8th was essentially unusable for cruising below about 95 mph, 7th was just barely usable at interstate speeds but you had to drop down to 5th or maybe 6th to pass anyone (even on the interstate) or even make it up a minor hill. In full auto mode it wouldn't downshift aggressively enough which made the car feel absolutely lethargic, and sport mode was too far on the other end of the spectrum in that it wouldn't upshift enough which was obnoxiously loud. Full manual mode was really the only effective way to cruise around comfortably while also being able to drop a couple of gears when you needed more power, but it felt like Mercedes was trying to make it feel like a highly strung pocket rocket and a relaxed cruiser at the same time, and the end result missed both targets. I suspect the same mostly holds true with the Emira as well. V6/6MT is the no-brainer configuration.

For me personally, if i would be in the market for a sports car, it would be a turn off to have a less communicative steering of the 4 cylinder vs its bigger brother (V6), having in mind that this is the main differentiation for Lotus vs rest of its competitors: HPS

I knew multiple guys who had it happen and every rocker arm looked the exact same and, IIRC, they typically broke on the same cylinder, too. Lotus kept moving goalposts not to cover it, so I got rid of it instead of getting legal or taking a $5K loss on a car that was going to be out of warranty in a few months. As a huge lotus fanboy (owned 7 S2 eliges) the emira (and especially this 2.0T DCT) interests me so much more than any of the evora sub models. If any lotus guys know, aftermarket on those Toyota engines truthfully sucks , and making more power is a pain (or insanely overpriced because lotus market) The 2.0 amg motor at least gives me hope that it’ll probably be insanely easy to eventually throw a downpipe/tune/dct tune and make 400whp~ reliably (as the motor has proven in other platforms) and with the combination of the DCT is truly amazing to keep up with the modern market of cars. I’d like to add I didn’t believe in sophisticated cars for a while until I got my F80 M3 and the customization and how amazing the DCT is really always had me thinking what it would be like to drive a lotus chassis with something that shifts that easily/maintains low end power band torque

i imagine you can take the i4 to renntech or any reputable tuner and make big safe power from the restrictions lotus puts onto their car to make it "inferior" to the v6. the lack of a manual transmission is sad but cars are fun as long as youre driving them, regardless of any differences they may have

assuming this doesn't have the MGUH hardware from the A45 and the '24 C63. Seems the boost profile is modelled after the Turbo Esprit?! I'm thinking the slow shifts at higher revs are blunted by the rev hanging, necessary to get the emission compliance on overrun.

Everyone else is saying it's 12kg lighter than the V6, not 30kg. Either way, it's not remotely significant. It's a horrid sounding engine and assuming the power delivery is like it is in the AMG A45, that's fairly shite, too.

*if you can't swing for the 6 cyl, personally I'd swing for a 981 Cayman GTS instead of this, nor the A110 nor 718 Cayman 4 cyl, because** 1) it sounds better. Like a LOT LOT LOT better than all 3 of these (Franky all 3 of them don't sound all that nice) 2) its design isn't outdated at all. Common folks would be hard pressed to tell differences in age across these cars 3) also a great handler, not inferior to any of these especially at the GTS package and even more especially with SPASM (x73) but does dimish comfort with that option. 4) it's $80-85k USD in price which idk if that's higher or lower than the other three but I'd assume to be around $5k-$10k gap down or up MAX in your region 5) it's not slow. 4.4 sec with PDK according to Porsche and likely even faster IRL. Plus do we really care about speed THAT much in a straight?

If I ever get a Lotus, more likely than not it will be a manual. Especially those with the open linkage thingy, that has to sound amazing at every shift. And for a DCT that shifts like a regular auto, better get the manual for engagement... But overall it seems like Lotus did nail as much as they could this package! That sounds amazing and I'm sure the DCT will open up a whole bunch of opportunities for countries where manual shift is not as widely used or where they are taxed on displacement =)

  • @riccochet704

My issue with the 4 banger AMG is that's not exactly cheap to upgrade, or maintain. The V6 toyota you can get off the shelf parts for. Plus the V6 has been around for so long that the performance market for it is a lot more saturated. It's cheaper to upgrade for big numbers. Smaller pulley, exhaust and tune for 500 HP isn't going to break the bank. While the AMG will run you $8000+ for a turbo upgrade, $2000 for an ECU, and you might see 450-460 HP. And there's no denying that the V6 just sounds better.
