It was a goalkeeper mistake that Messi smelled from 30 meters away. People often think it's one or the other, but Messi is good because he sees what other people don't. He doesn't try long shots like that every game. His game isn't a combination of flashy tricks, but doing just enough at the exact right time.

Keep saying the same but the haters keep coming out with "lol MLS bad defending". And it's somewhat true (and I say with no small amount of chagrin that Philly's defensive strategy and goalkeeping were horrendous last night), as outside of the top few squads, defending really is a glaring weak point in MLS. But again, what did you think he would do, considering what he's done against the world's best?

No not a Goalkeeper's fault. Also there were 3 defenders who did not expect that Messi will shoot that from that far. He did almost the same against Mexico in the 2022 WC. it was genius of Messi who saw that oppertunity in 1-2 seconds and created that accurate angle and shot to push the ball into the goal post. I've been saying this for a while - the MLS isn't and won't become the Premier League. The Premier League is in a league of its own, much like La Liga or Serie A. While I appreciate the MLS's ambitions, believing it needs to reach that level is unrealistic. It's fantastic that it's getting more exposure through this initiative, but the concern lies in what happens after that Messi departs. Right now, there's no need to worry, but the question is whether the perception of the MLS will remain the same or diminish once his influence fades.

Maybe. But we’ve been hearing this since Pele. what is really going to change the talent and overall culture and make the MLS a major professional league in the US is homegrown talent. The youth system needs to change…which it is, and we need better developmental feeding clubs that starts at a young age and filters into the USL (the league below the MLS). That and gettting more top talent from Latin America (as the US has a huge Latino population). The MLS has a long way to go, it’s getting better, but it’s not just Euro talent that’s going to make it legit! It has to start in our neck of the woods and side of the pond !

He score 50 in 37 games one year, 46 in 32 in another and had other years when he scored more goals than games played. Think about it , scoring more times than you actually played. Seems to me, he's just being Messi. Lionel Messi has America ALL TO HIMSELF. CR7 decides to go to Riyadh instead of LA or NY. And now Neymar just decided to go to Riyadh instead of LA. And poor little Messi just gets to be in Miami and own a country of 330million people. For that decision alone the Boy is the G O A T.

The "Arabia" project will face the same issues than the "PSG" project had. Only money doesn't buy genuine interest from the people, as well as money doesn't produce good football as an entertaining product. What I like about Messi move is that now I'm discovering (as the world) that MLS can be hella entertaining since defenses let attackers play more freely, if you add to that a player like Messi (very motivated to compete) who can help people discover this new league, and you put him at the center of a good story (the worst team of the league climbing the ladder to become champions) that's the best marketing the league can get, and that's a project that as far as I see, everybody is working on capitalize, from the teams who seem more motivated to compete, and the media who helps to amplify this great story... I have no idea what is happening in Arabia and I have zero interest in figure it out.

Saudi league is gonna turn out just like Chinese super league, some years ago they used to buy players from Europe and paying them lots of money hoping that their league will attract lots of attention from the rest of the world but nothing really happened. The truth is these players are just playing for money, there is no passion. on the other hand Messi is playing with passion considering that he just won the world cup you wouldn't expect him to be playing the way he's playing coz there is nothing else left for him to play for, that passion he puts in the game actually makes people more attracted to MLS than the Saudi league.

PSG has access to the UEFA Champions League. The Saudi teams don't, that alone is what will hurt the Saudi's unless they can convince the world that, the highest level competition and play is with them. Until then they'll have the reputation of the MLS with no caps on budget. Which is seen as a retirement league for former European players. The only reason it seems like attackers seem more free in the MLS, is because the level of play in the MLS isn't up to snuff as say to the Premier League. which means someone like Messi is gonna eat them alive. Miami isn't as bad right now as people are claiming though. The team has a couple of Barca players and they tried to score Suarez which fell through for now. But Messi has support from some that understand and work with him. Miami FC is basically a quarter former Barca in pink.

Are you American? I think that the entire pint of the Messi signing is to ignite US interest in MLS. International fans don’t have any attachments to foreign cities. They will just come and go with players. Look at Barcelona since Messi left or Real Madrid after Ronaldo. A lot of fans lose interest. The Saudi league suffers the same problem. Nobody actually cares about the teams. People just want to see Ronaldo, Neymar, and Benzema play. Saudi Arabia doesn’t have the domestic potential that the US does. The Messi signing was about the other 28 teams more than Miami. People will be exposed to their local team and hopefully become a fan. Don’t get me wrong I was just at a home Miami game and it was awesome. However, these other teams have awesome atmospheres you won’t find in other American sports.

You're right Saudi project is similar to PSG project. It gets exciting in the beginning then it wears off eventually.Too much money just ruins the quality & competitiveness of football. Saudi league will be back to where it was no matter how much money they're pumping it. People may be attracted to bigger names in a short term but most people want to watch quality and better competition. PSG had Messi, neymar & Mbapee. They supposed to be the power house of Europe but that project failed & the players don't want to stay. Money wasn't the problem they get paid much but they couldn't hack it. Like PSG, Saudi have too much money, they can buy the best players in the world but they'll never create the quality of football that will attract many viewers. Players will never give their best even work harder if they're over paid an excessive amount of money. Saudi league can't be more than a retirement project.

And Tata Martino is making great calls in terms of who to play and when to play them. It’s not just Messi magic, although his leadership and presence certainly doesn’t hurt morale! 2 of the 4 goals from the semifinal, Messi wasn’t really even involved in, and I love how he steps back sometimes to give his mates the chance to shine. Yes, Messi is scoring a lot of goals, but it's not just his presence that has turned Miami around. Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba deserve some credit as well. And let's not forget the new coach, Tata Martino is a part of the turn around, too. (Don't believe that, just remember what he did for Atlanta, and what has happened with them sense he left that club.)

No, it is not a problem cause he is old. But Messi has a lot to teach every MLS player. That is why is playing in the MLS. If 25 year old Messi would play in MLS that would be nonsense. MLS level is too low

Messi's crazy goal scoring is only a problem if the MLS doesn't get better from it. Now they get how good this guy is. Now they will have to raise their standard. Offensive players, especially young players will start to imitate him. At the same time, defenses are going to have to make necessary adjustments in order to try to stop him and the style that he's showing the young American audience. It's the dance of offense vs defense that brings this game so much beauty.

Messi (and Busquets & Alba) are used to a much higher level in the Spanish and European competitions: defense is much tighter, ball circulation has a much higher pace, players are technically and tactically much more skilled. Messi must be feeling like he is playing on a kids playground…. Doesn’t matter, he seems to have fun, and that he as earned after so many years of extreme pressure.

Yeah! Messi still took that shot out from 30 yards and while it looked like it trickled in… it was a lazer to the bottom corner… he keeps getting questioned while being finally recognized as the 🐐 He completed soccer and now is having fun! He is so humble and still in so much shape at his age… 🙏

It's not just Messi. Yes, he's unquestionably the G.O.A.T. The MLS/fan base should question how many goals are being scored and the "level" they are being allowed. I think the quality of defense and keepers need to increase tbh. The Messi microscope is just exposing this aspect of the league.

He is too good for the league, but I'm glad he is here. His skill and smile has given a huge spark in the interest in the MLS and that is a great thing. As a life long Sounders fan, I am completely happy with Messi being here. The only other time I can recall an American league had this spark was when Pele came to New York. I was fortunate to see him play twice. I hope I am fortunate enough to get tickets to see Messi play.

And yeah, Messi is an unreachable quality player for Europe (for the past several years)... in the US? Even higher in the sky above all other ones...

The only mistake the goal keeper has is that he panic when he sees Messi coming towards him to his right, the rest, Messi is a talented genius who always place his strikes as close to the corner as possible, and a very efficient one at that, so yeah, Messi is skillfully that's y that ball slip in.
