I think that when artists like Kelly ‘decline’, they just care less about chart positions and sales than they used to. This imo leads to a much higher quality record than if they were trying to appeal to the masses. She’s putting out the music that SHE wants. Meaning of Life is a superb album and is one of my faves in Kelly’s discography. She’s already proven that she’s one of the best and most versatile artists around and easily gives the artists topping the charts today a run for their money.

I definitely agree with this analysis. She dreamed to make a soulful album for years, she's 100% living her artistic projects and dreams. And I personally love this album, it suits her voice so well... Compared to albums like All I Ever Wanted (which I like but often skip) and compared to Piece by Piece (which has gems in it, but otherwise is forgettable). It's all personal opinion, but I don't get the point of this video, sales are not all that matters.

I have liked some of her tunes if not all for any reason. she did so much and then took time off for other things. but came back and do like one her new songs if not all. give artist time or a break and then have time to recharge and come back fresh with new tunes. i have liked a variety kinda songs, i try to like chil tunes, but im more of an upbeat song kinda person. so as before, i may not like all but i do try like 1 or more songs if any.

Criminally underrated album. Not only her best album but a generally excellent album that deserves more recognition. Deserved to be one of the best pop albums of the decade with multiple hits. Also it should go down as one of the best vocal albums of all time and I hope one day people realize this.

There are so many artists talking about their bad experiences with the labels from Sony like Kesha, Zara Larsson, Michael Jackson, Travis Scott, Fifth Harmony and many more. i agree and sony hurts a lot of artists career especially columbia records as a lot of artists on that label like muna, wet, st lucia and amber coffman never had their album released on cd just vinyl. i think columbia did that to hurt these artists as they don't want to spend the money on these artists like they should. they are a huge major label so they could easily afford to make cds. i even complaied about wets album not being on being available on cd so they burned me a cd.

They treat their artists like dogs like telling them what to/not to say, what not to/to do, what to sing, etc. Some of them are so depressed and overworked that they kill themselves. I think My December was what changed her trajectory. She was at a low point in her life, burnt out by fame. She never wanted to be the biggest pop star in the world (one could argue she was in 2005/6). My December not having a radio hit, led radio to go with P!nk for the pop rock sound that was popular/missing at the time. P!nk was in a decline/struggling around the time of My December with Try This flopping and I’m Not Dead not doing well. Radio dumped Never Again, Kelly’s lead single and U + Ur Hand became a hit for P!nk that same time frame. Kelly still recovered with All I Ever Wanted and Stronger but I feel if Kelly would have released a popRock album like her label had wanted instead of My December right after Breakaway she’d be a way bigger force than she is now. Fast forward, I think one of the biggest issues facing her now obviously is her age/being a mom (cool factor) and she’s embracing it lol unlike P!nk who is embracing the “cool” mom with her edginess and acrobatics. The other is radios refusal to play this (Meaning of Life) albums records. She even called them out for being fake, they were invited to her home to listen and still didn’t play the singles. Radio isn’t as strong as it was but for her demo it is still very important as they still buy albums/singles and listen to radio over streaming (the biggest factor on the billboard hot 100). Kelly may not be as relevant for popular music as she once was but Kelly Clarkson the celebrity is bigger than ever, having her biggest income years the past 2 years and having the highest rated new Daytime Talk Show. So I would say she is doing just fine.

Kelly wanted creative freedom on MD. And because of that, RCA let her have it, but as punishment in a way, they did not promote the album like Breakaway, and Thankful were promoted. Never Again was really the only single that managed to get enough promotion to chart in the Top 10. The album was less Pop and more of a grungy, dark, and heavy rock sound. Which because of Kelly's versatility sounded good with her voice. I think the album could have done better if it was given more promotion. With MOL, I do think the promo was also a bit lackluster, but not because Atlantic didn't believe in her. But because Kelly had a lot more going on than just music. This is 10 years (an entire decade) after MD was released. So things are obviously different. She's now a mother, a wife, a coach on The Voice, a Talk Show host, a host for the BBMA's, a Children's Book Author, and still releases new music and has time to go on tour. If you ask me, I'd say she's doing too much at the same time. But she enjoys the busy lifestyle. This new record coming later this year is supposed to be a mix of 3 of her most critically acclaimed albums. So she just might make a musical comeback with it if she does everything right and gives the promotion the album will need. However, Kelly's need to be successful in the music world is not as dominant as it used to be back in when she was first starting out. It's been nearly 18 years, she's made her mark in the music industry. In her eyes, there's no need for more fame in the music world anymore. So I expect the new music to be even better than MOL, but I don't expect it to be bigger than MOL, since I just don't see her doing all the promo and stuff. But we'll see. She has a lot of platforms now to promote so really there's no reason why she wouldn't be able to.

Joseph I agree that she chose her self worth and art rather than sell it to the devil himself (Clive Davis). I do however, hate to say it, as My December is my favorite album by her but Clive was right (throw up in mouth), but it was never gonna have a huge hit even with promotion. None of the songs fit what radio wanted, happy poppy songs...the only songs that maybe had potential on radio were How I Feel and Maybe. But that’s why I said that I felt that P!nk filled that void during that time period by providing radio the more commercial pop/rock sound that was wanted out of the two artists. I think Kelly didn’t/doesn’t care but it was definitely a bad move for her “celebrity” at the time for her and for RCA. If she would have listened to Clive to add one/two more commercial songs on the album she could have had those three hits and still have her album, but it was her Art and she choose it over commercial success. Like I said the choice she made for herself was the right one and she will always prevail because she seems like a genuinely great person and it shows in her almost two decade career.

@@popdissected4400 that's because a lot of them only like the pop stuff (teeny-boppers) that gets repeated on the radio, it wouldn't be so bad if today's youth liked other genres (or even 80s/60s/70s music, AKA the music of yester-decade, but personally I like a bit of everything, just not the stuff that gets repeated on the radio all the time🤦🏼‍♀️) than pop. I also don't understand with how phone obsessed youth are today (myself included) it would not be THAT hard for them to discover artists that are not played on the radio. In Australia we have this radio station called triple J and that is a good place if you want to avoid "repetitive pop" (or Spotify, SoundCloud, etc)thats played gets played on the "mainstream" stations all the time. But I must warn that on Triple J they don't edit/beep out the swear words (as they are trying to push boundaries). P.S. I liked this album too, definitely prefer it over her old pop martial.

Meaning, if I change to what I'm now doing which has brought me success to doing something I truly like I may lose many of my fans. Kelly was true to herself and made "Meaning of Life". I absolutely loved this album. Played it non-stop in the car for about 6 months and got a floor seat to the tour! I sang every MOL lyric proudly! I'm an R&B lover and was excited to hear her take on the genre. Sadly, that type of R&B isn't appreciated by the masses right now. I think it would've performed better 10 years ago. Plus, unfortunately, young people think she's old and older people were still comparing her to her former weight. It's crazy how people can skip pure talent to obsess over vanity. But i think the album is a sign of a resurgence because it helped snowball all these other great opportunities she has right now. GO KELLY!

It had a 60s retro vibe to it and that wasn't and isn't a popular sound at the moment. I think meaning of life the song is so underrated and should have been the first single. 1. Meaning of life 2. Move you 3. Didn't I 4. I don't think about you

I love that you shine light on kelly clarkson who i feel is underrated just like P!nk and Nelly Furtado (which it would be nice to receive videos from them). I would say double lead singles I feel is not always a bad move. I feel if it is done right it could be a great thing. For example, Beyonce's I Am..Album If I were a boy and Single ladies (then diva and halo to follow) were released at the same time, The Weeknd's singles with Heartless and Blinding Lights, Ed Sheeran with Shape of You and Castle on the hill. I feel for her having Love So Soft and Move You showed diversity in the album. I feel that Meaning of Life was not meant to be anything other than the dream project for Kelly. She done the #1 albums, #1 singles, and received her grammy wins. I felt like this record was not about charts or performance but her first taste of artistic freedom. Throughout her career she was limited to who she worked for and what singles she should have put out. However, if I had an opinion of singles choices I would have wanted: 1. Love So Soft/Move You 2. Medicine 3. I Don't Think About You (which could have been the piece by piece of the album) 4. Slow Dance 5. Heat I felt that her single choices for that album could show her diversity and not just a simple pop star. As for Piece by Piece I would go for: 1. Heartbeat Song 2. Let Your Tears Fall 3. War Paint 4. Piece By Piece (Idol Version) 5. Tightrope If putting more effort that album would have blown up more Stronger 1. Mr. Know It All 2. Stronger 3. Dark Side 4. Let Me Down My December, one of my personal favorite albums. The label didn't even gave it a chance. If promoted like it should it would have done much bigger probably be one of her career defining albums: 1. Never Again 2. Sober - this would have been a big hit 3. Dirty Little Secret - this would have been huge 4. Be Still - every dance would play this 5. Maybe - this song had so much potential like Pink's song Waiting for Love All I Ever Wanted 1. My Life would suck without you 2. I don't hook up 3. Cry 4. Already Gone/Acoustic 5. Tip of my tongue 6. Long Shot

It’s really difficult for artists who sold millions of albums last decade compete with artists from streaming time. Kelly and other few examples survived a long way music industry changes and who followed this artists made them survivor. I don’t think decline is a better word to say that she focus on tour and tv shows then promote the singles. Actually I’d prefer an album well shaped and nicest produced so I can listen for the entire year than a massive single #1.

Few artists can manage to sell big anymore, and it's just not the way people consume music anymore.

Her sales might be on a decline but still, it doesn't mean her name is going away any sooner. Sales always decline after a peak mostly and it's been like 15 years for her. The thing is she is still relevant, she is a household name in the industry right now, very respected, and she has a lot of works on TV from hosting bbmas to talk show to the voice so I think we're going to be seeing Kelly a lot more than we actually think. Artists like Pink or Kelly or Alicia Keys don't really need mega hits anymore to stay relevant and that's when you know your career is still successful.

I feel like this "decline" is more apparent since people no longer have a "taste" for her type of artistry in the music world. The type of motivation and inspiration that comes from her type of music is no longer wanted by the general population anymore. The overall crowd don't want what she has to offer any longer. She has a gorgeous voice and a somewhat stable fanbase, but tbh her music is no longer effective to the general public eye. They're looking for other things, and they simply are looking elsewhere.

I don’t think Kelly is in a decline at all. The girl has still got it. She is a very talented multi genre, multi octave artist. She can sing more variations of music than the majorityand has a super strong voice and presence. She is also very knowledgeable of the science of music which makes her a great coach on “The Voice”. She is energetic, enthusiastic and very hard working all the while having a great sense of humor and being extremely entertaining. The girl has got it going on! And if that’s not a rare enough combination, she is very real, down to earth, humble and warm hearted. She’s the exception, not the rule for someone who has the level of success she has. She hasn’t forgotten where she came from nor how she got there. I truly hope she has many more years of success. As far as slow sales of this latest album, could it be a marketing issue? I also think as good as they are, she and Blake would make an incredible duet.

This album is amazing. If it went unnoticed, it's because the market caters to a younger audience, who sometimes appreciate flashy over substance. I'm sure that matters more than total sales.

Pop Dissected No problem! I agree with the take in the comments that casual Kelly fans may have been turned off by how the album was marketed. I do still think that Atlantic / Kelly management didn’t do an amazing job of pushing Love So Soft / the album into different musical spaces. They didn’t push the singles to any R&B radio stations. They could’ve pushed a dance remix of Love So Soft harder because of all Kelly songs, it feels like the one that definitely belongs at an average dance club. Also, I was subscribed to Atlantic newsletters and they very, VERY sparingly mentioned the record. It’s a shame because whenever I play Love So Soft at a party or in a car, people love it. A true bop. I agree with your overall take though that ultimately, she’s at a good spot in her career - she’s doing what she wants to do and making the music she wants, which is what matters. I hear a new single is coming out in early January, called I Dare You. I’m stoked!

Loved both. Ive asked her online to segive us all an album like both the two. My december meets all i ever wanted, or separte2 albums that are similar to her 2007-2010 years. In the case of Kelly Clarkson, she is always busy doing her talk show and she has proven her talent for almost 2 decades now.

Meaning of life is a great album. But honestly when I open my music app it's not the first album I gravitate to. But if it plays in a shuffle I'm not skipping any one of the songs

Remember how i told you about the age 30 rule in mainstream pop ? It applies here too. Kelly was 29 during 'stronger' and was 33 for 'piece by piece' which was when floppage started and she failed to produce any more hits. Ill throw in and mention others that dropped out at exactly 30 gaga , 30 'joanne' kesha, 30 'Rainbow' Xtina, 30 'bionic' Britney, 30 'Britney jean' Katy, 30 'witness' Avril lavigne, 30 'Avril lavigne' It's amazing but it's really THAT simple

brainey001 I think 40 is more or less the decline number. 30 is more like a discovery period as to whether or not an artist will become a legend and persevere or diminish in the spotlight. Mariah flopped at 30 with Glitter then released the biggest come back album of all time and became a legend Beyoncé released 4, the least best selling album of her career at age 30 and now we all know how that went. Taylor Swift with her Lover album, and she’s still figuring it out, but I’d think she still has a lot of presence and starpower in the industry Michael Jackson with the Dangerous album, and then becoming a legend from his HiSTORY album

brainey001 I disagree. Mariah’s The Emancipation of Mimi came out when she is 35 years old. Cher released her No. 1 comeback hit/record Believe, OLD enough that she’s my grandma’s age at that time.

thesneakerfreak I think all of these affect women more in the industry compared to men. You can be as old as the legendary Johnny Cash and still have a No. 1 single/album. Hence, Michael could’ve aged well and received No. 1s throughout his entire career.

Khairuddin Nordin I know, that’s why I literally quoted she released glitter at 30. And then the emancipation of Mimi later. Man released dangerous at 28/29 then came back at 35 with history. My point was after the fact of 30. Not at 30.

I like Kelly but personally taste - she isn't an artist i get excited about to sit through a whole album. I think her fans are happy to see her live singing the songs they know and love. History generally shows that artist never comes back swinging quite as good as they did in their prime. it's just how it goes. btw love your vids pop dissected :)

I am 16 and I am absolutely obsessed with this record Kelly has said that she's always wanted to toy with the soul sound and this was that for her she's played with it before on the song "bad reputation" (on piece by piece deluxe) the lead single ( love so soft) was stand out I love the record so much the title track is one of my favorites and I love move you 💛 it's an unpopular opinion but the album is incredible 🧡

honestly, this record is what made me a big fan of her. She's definitely at a more-so transition point of her career than a "decline" in my opinion. she doesn't seem to care about chart performance and such as much as she used to, and I think with that she seems to be only releasing more and more quality music, rather than music that will appeal to the general public. can't wait to hear about her new music in 2020! (yes she's releasing more in 2020, she's confirmed it!)

The last album where I know all of the songs from her is Stronger back in 2011 and a few songs from Piece by Piece in 2015. As a fan, I didn't feel the connection and some songs just sound the same with her past songs, not a bad thing but kind of felt tired of the same tunes. Maybe she can release new music every now and then but not a full-length album anymore until she's clear about her direction.

I can understand that! I did feel Kelly was clear with her direction for "Meaning of Life", but I think the sound was just 'too different', and also not 'in' at the time of the record's release, thus didn't gamer that mass appeal of her previous works.

As someone who voted for Meaning of Life last week: thank you for making this video. When I saw that it was in last place, I was kind of bummed because it really goes to show how so many people slept on Kelly’s album. I think a lot of it had to do with how relevant she was in the gp due to being a coach on The Voice at the time. It overshadowed her record. Plus I don’t think the style of music she was creating really was the sound of most mainstream pop. 2017 was really when hip hop inspired music really began to take off, and R&B just wasn’t what the younger generation was in to. Kelly promoted the album as a quote, “grown album” and called herself a “grown ass woman” in most interviews, and I think that could have also impacted her reach to teenagers and the like. God writing that makes me feel soooooo old. Lol. I was 19, almost 20 when this album dropped. I know I was the only one of my friends who are my age who were jamming to this masterpiece of an album though... Meaning of Life is my second favorite album from Kelly, and it’s right behind My December. Honestly, I’m not even surprised they’re both at the bottom commercially; they’re honest and have substance. Sadly those types of albums never seem to get the attention they deserve.

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts! And I agree with a lot of the points you bring up. As for the poll, I've seen some a bit irked I didn't immediately chose the most voted; but I felt because "Meaning of Life" had so little votes, then that meant there must have been some reason many weren't acknowledging the record, so I had to make a video on it first!

Pop Dissected I honestly appreciate it. Thank you. Love your videos btw! I think it’s really neat that you took the data you gathered and used it to shine some light on an album that deserves it, instead of going with the most popular choice first. More people need to take notes :)

You said it when you talked about splitting sales and streams between the two singles. Many of us have been fans of Kelly since the beginning don’t even stream music. That really hurts artists like her as that is a major component in charting success.

I think the title is very 2000's which is a silly decision, and to contrast the music is quite different I think to her usual music, very dramatic like full on Celine Dion dramatic and that makes a cheesy contrast with the chat speak title

It could also be that she isn’t too proud of this album. When I went to see her Boston show in March of 2019, part of the Meaning of Life Tour, she only sang about two songs from her new album, the rest were from previous albums or singles.

Interesting. I think when a record 'underperforms' or doesn't meet the expected commercial success, then it means that there wasn't a mass interest in the record. With that, the artist won't focus on performing songs off said record and will likely focus on their more notable tracks - as their audience obviously has fans, but I'm sure a mix of casual listeners as well. So they'll want to find a way to appeal to both, but more so appeal to those who aren't dedicated fans to keep that interest throughout the show.
