I really don't like this take, because it misrepresents what has since been proven to be a myth. The myth is *not* that corsets are restrictive; that is true. The myth is that corsets are dangerous. Corsets are absolutely restrictive, and you seriously do not need that much support constantly when wearing practical clothes. The issue of the time was that women's skirts and undergarments were often so unweildy and heavy that they would cause discomfort, which is what corsets were developed to offset. The boning and length of the corset do limit how much you can bend over and move around, and are much more than the average woman will ever need in terms of support if she's not lugging around 10kg of clothing at all times. There is a reason that despite having been a staple, corsets were quickly abandoned in favour of bras. I don't mean to be condescending of course, it's just that I so often come across this kind of comment. Its got the right spirit, but is a little of target regarding the truth of the matter.

@@sparksfly6149 well we also have to consider that the corset was developed from the pair of stays which was developed from a pair of bodies and presumably women had been wearing a similar covering for bust support for many years before that. These types of garments have been worn for hundreds of years. I think that the corset was developed for both the purpose of support for the bust and to support the undergarments. And to of course give the fashionable silhouette. I think there are multiple sides to this though but it can be hard to fully pin down what it was like since a lot has been rewritten and women’s accounts weren’t well accounted for. @@sparksfly6149 all of this reads as your opinion, not fact. Where you say that corsets were "constricting", I would say they were "supportive"; opinions varied then just as much as they do now. Many women these days view bras in the same way you described corsets, and it's therefore perfectly true if I were to say that there have _always_ been people who choose not to follow trends in anything, and for any number of reasons. But, that said, it would be ridiculous to allege that, as a whole, corsets were "restrictive", "unwieldy" and "uncomfortable". On balance, it's just not true; I have read first hand accounts of women who _loved_ wearing corsets, and found them very comfortable, and not at all restricting. As a professional living history recreator, aka a "historic reinactor" myself, I have spent an incredible amount of time wearing many different corsets, stays, bodies, etc, of many different designs and manufacture and, as they were all fitted for me, none of them-not a single one-could ever be described by me, the wearer, as restrictive, unwieldy or uncomfortable. So, whilst I appreciate what you're trying to say, I simply cannot agree, and I feel that you're a bit overenthusiastic about sharing your opinion-with regards to something you seemingly have limited experience with-as fact, which I cannot abide, no matter how many disclaimers of you might make insisting you're not meaning to patronise anyone. Thus, though it's possible that I'm coming across as terse, I really did feel the need to correct you insofar as this is a topic I have extensive experience with (aka wearing and making modern, vintage, antique styled and other historically patterned corsets, and their forbearers such as stays, bodies, etc. Respectfully, whilst I do understand your desire to correct facts you perceive to be incorrect, I must present that which I have outlined as a correction, in hopes you will understand that I come from a similar place of intent as your comment did, and I felt it necessary to share based on my personal experiences, both first hand and from the variety of primary sources I have learned from over the many years I've been doing this. I'm aware that I am one person, and personal anecdotes are not considered the most reliable unless aggregated, so I'm aware I could be giving you a flawed conclusion, though I have endeavoured to be as factual as possible and, though I think I'm right here, I'm aware that everyone is fallible, me included. I hope I've made myself clear! Thank you for reading (if anyone does).

There would be no Chanel without Coco so we need to give her the proper credit she is due (you don’t have to like what she stood for personally because her ties to the Nazi’s isn’t a good look). She was so incredibly creative. A real fashion forward risk taker, and as woman who loves anything fashion I must show my respect and appreciate her contributions. Any woman that’s ever gone to a nice dinner, the theater, or cocktail party and wore her favorite little black dress has her to thank. Karl made Chanel the world wide fashion house it is today with his incredible genius and talent. Karl’s name and legacy is his own, but we would still be talking about Coco and the fashion house Chanel today without him.

There was actually loads of woman-owned couture houses prior to Chanel. One of them being Lanvin, still active today

And Schiaparelli
Coco created the foundation and structure, Karl just filled the seams. Both became legends at their own right yet interconnected to one another.
She names it Chanel No. 5 because when they brought her samples they were numbered that one happened to be number 5 so she said just call it Chanel Number 5 ❤
She did a lot that was so revolutionary at that time; women in trousers?? In that area was just mindblowing Both did a whole lot for Chanel , decades in-between & each respectfully from one of another ✌🏻🌸
I think coco Chanel did much better
My sister wrote a paper, when she was getting her Masters in Fashion and Dress History, that touched on Coco. Obviously Coco did way more. After the war, she demanded (womans) clothing get zippers and buttons back, as there were no more need for rations. One on my favorites, regardless of the controversy with her father.
The breakfast at Tiffany's one that was shown in the vid is Givenchy I think

Yes, indeed
Both are equally important to chanel. Coco did coco the best and Karl made coco better. It was definitely the team of the millinium.
CoCo was the better designer for Chanel KL only added a little update but she was the brains behind the brand a very clever women.

She gave us pockets ❤
I’m going with CoCo. Karl redeemed the brand though.
Both played pivotal roles. Without each other, there wouldn’t be this successful brand. Kudos to both
If I, the founder, am ever compared to a contributor, I would be insulted. There is no comparison. He did his job. I am surprised he did not start his own successful brand.

He did....
Although it's hard to compare the two, there wouldn't even be a Chanel without Coco. AND don't forget about the LBD! ❤
Audrey Hepburn was wearing Givenchy in that picture lol. People always think that dress is Chanel for some reason
She wasn’t the first female couturier, it was Madame Gres.
Chanel loves women more than Karl does
Obviously Coco. There’d be no Chanel without Coco Chanel.
That's why they were born in different times. Each was brilliant for her and his time.
She is the queen of fashion
Ooohhhh this is a GOOD ONE!
Women had businesses in France in the 1910s, especially hat shops, which is what her business started as. Don't confuse France with the UK or the US.
LOVE YOUR ACCENT! 😅
She was the talent, he was the marketer.
Thank you for this presentation ❤
Women were not constrained by corsets, they were custom made underwear with support for the back, the breast and the heavy clothes Also why would you show a Givenchy little black dress instead of a Channel one
Both were designers of their time with a vision!
That’s an absurd question ! Everything coco did Mr Lagerfeld did and reinterpreted those pieces for today look close at the pieces it’s all the same . Styles bones fabrics.
Both played key roles
Both of theme are iconic ❤❤
"Freeing her from corsets" everytime I hear this I die internally
They’re both so pivotal to the brand, Coco’s the creator and pioneer. Carl’s the innovator
Lagerfeld was better if commercial success was the measure. But Coco was an innovator at a time when it was much harder for women to be taken seriously in business
Without Coco there wouldn’t be a brand
Both geniuses
You have just amplified my love for Chanel, what an amazing woman
Its called chanel cause of coco chanel no doubts ❤
Made being tan popular 🤯 Among the revolutionary moves for woman I’m impressed
Both...one to start and one to continue
As a non fashion woman, i always think chanel was meant to bring a little masculinity in woman. Towards to minimal even. Didn’t expect the bag that was going to be the hightlights of this brand.
Coco Chanel is an ICON
Karl Lagerfeld's stuff was candy colors. Coco understood her market better.😊
She also cuddled up with Natzis
I had a Chanel chain bag. It was accidentally sold in garage sale for 5 bucks.
She is a legend. But Karl is as well, Chanel runway in the 90s is the stuff of legends it’s SO good. Chanel and Mugler are top for me, I don’t know why anyone else even tried in the 90s 😊❤😂❤
That's all good and dandy, but she also fncked Nazis during WW2
It is a major misconseption that corsets were uncomfortable. They were a form of underwear and gave women back support. I wear a reconstruction corset every day of the week and I can breath perfectly fine.
BOTH❤
I guess you forgot to mention the dark side ( That god forbid one dare to mention) of Coco Channel 😅
Both of them are equally important without the other everything would crumble
Nobody can outdo the founder.
They’re both genius
God damn. She was even more creative than Steve Jobs.
We need both of them.
This little black dress was created by Givenchy.
Basically She invented and created everything in fashion 😮
Could you do one on dior
Both of them are incredible designers in their own right. They both had their own sense of what fashion meant to them and were able to execute their passions in a way that either truly stood out and was groundbreaking or became lifetime classics.

Dude is so cute.
The history class that we need 💯

Without Coco Chanel, there would be no Chanel…there would be Lagerfeld, period. Sending best wishes always
between the nazi and not nazi...
Plus, while Coco was a Nazi, only Lagerfelds parents were.

COCO SHE MADE IT!
The tanning seemed like a great idea as the time, but wasn't so good when viewed in hindsight.
Jeanne Lanvin opened rye first female owned couture house in 1889
Coco was an innovator, but a controversial figure during her time. Her brand was almost ruined after WW2 due to her ties with the Nazi. Karl raised the brand higher than it's former glory with his ingenious designs and marketing.
That's a no brainer: CC .
2.5 Caviar Classic Flap
There would be no Chanel without Coco.
Both😊
They were both important for the brand
So real Channel empowered women.
How is it even a question. Without her, there would have been no Chanel.
I'm so, so tired of hearing that corsets are "restrictive" when there are so many historians on KZread alone showing (wearing historical corsets) and debunking this myth.
Isn't Lanvin older than Chanel? If so, wouldn't that make Jeanne Lanvin the first woman to own her haute coutier house that still exists today?
When clothes are suppose to be for everyone and now it's not.
Coco started it Karl reinvigorated it for a new era. Chanel wouldn’t be what it is without either.
First of all, corsets were not painful they were women's best friend in supporting the chest and creating a fashionable figure with padding without the need of extreme diets or surgery. 😢😢😢😢
:fun fact coco Chanel was an orphan and she knit while over kids played❤
He designed the double intersection c logo
Lagerfeld had retted the Brand as it was down!
