IS JUNGFRAUJOCH "TOP" OF EUROPE REALLY WORTH IT? 8 More Affordable, Higher, Less-Touristy Options

In this video, we explore whether the Jungfraujoch Top of Europe is really worth the increasingly hefty price tag. We'll take a closer look at the attractions, the views, and the overall experience, and compare it with 8 alternative destinations that offer similar experiences but are either more affordable, higher, or less-touristy! From Glacier Paradise in Zermatt to Brienzer Rothorn, Stanserhorn, Rigi, Grindelwald First, and more, we'll showcase these hidden gems that are higher in altitude, less crowded, and equally as fun. So if you're looking for a unique adventure without breaking the bank or fighting the crowds, this video is for you. Don't miss out on the ultimate guide to finding the best high-altitude destinations in Switzerland!

Hi guys! Thank you so much for your videos! I love them, they are the best. And so good to find out that this year 2023, the top of the world pass is no longer available. So confusing, I kept looking for it, and couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong. Now it makes sense. So, now I don't know for sure what one to get. And thanks to the info of this video, I really don't think we need to do top of Europe. We do want to avoid crowds, but want the views and some hiking. We are 2 older ladies in our 60's, but still very active and want to do a lot of hiking. We will have 10 days, 3 in Alpenzell, 2 in Lucerne, and 4 staying in Lautenbrunnen. We will have a rental car. We want to do hiking in all places, and seeing all we can do. Which pass would you recommend for us?

Thank you ! This is amazing! I've decided to buy the Bernese Oberland pass and focus on the jungfraujoch region. Never wanted to do the top of Europe thing. Now you have given me more assurance I'm buying the right pass. Will definitely take a look at your itineraries. I'm going in early September. I wonder if anyone can advise me on the temperature difference on ground and at these higher altitudes.

One of your best videos guys. Thanks a lot for creating such amazing stuff. Basis your advice didn't went to Top of Europe as I had already covered Mt Titlis during my Swiss visit in Nov-Dec 2022. So in the spare day, went to Rigi Kulm from Zurich and the whole journey was awesome and can never forget it. A train from Zurich to Arth Goldau and from there a toy train to Rigi Kulm and on the return a train to Vitznau and from there a Cruise to Lucerne was beyond words. All these rides was able to cover on a Saver Day Pass Will like to cover places in my next trip (hopefully sooner than later) as mentioned in this video like Glacier Paradise and Brienzer Rothorn. Thanks a lot. You guys really rock....

As a Swiss who grew up in Berne and spends several weeks per year in the Interlaken region I fully agree with all of your recommendations - useful resource of information! Does the Jungfraubahn still offer the discounted early-bird tickets? Another nice, less costly alternative in the region with beautiful views is Schynige Platte (you have mentioned it before as well).

We stayed 3 days in Wengen and traveled to Jungfraujoch on May 6th so were lucky enough to be able to purchase the 3 day Jungfrau Region pass with the add on for Jungfraujoch for about $250 USD each. While planning out trip we did not realize that pass was going to end on May 11th!) We had a fantastic time at Jungraujoch with clear skies and cool but comfortable 30°fahrenheit weather. My husband has a fear of heights. Gondalas add to that fear. So for this reason, the Jungfraujoch was the right choice for us. He thoroughly enjoyed the trip up to the top on the train but agreed to go down via the large 20 person gondola, to Grindelwald because he could sit backwards, looking up at the mountain where we had been rather than looking down into the valley as we descended. (This way he avoided seeing high high off the ground we were.) I was so proud of him for facing his fear and going up with me and he was very proud of himself too. That is the day he tells everyone about when they ask about our trip. Those 3 days were an expensive part of our total trip, but totally worth it for this Florida couple. It's not for everyone, but it was right for us.

I agree with your recommendations. Plus "Altitude Feeling" for me is actually a con. I get sick, and it's not worth traveling to the Top of Europe if you're just going to sit there, waiting for the train to get you down again. We even spent a night in Wengen and interlaken first to get acclimated, but if you're prone to altitude sickness, I guess just don't go up there, full stop.

Shhhhhh! You gave away the best kept secret--the Stanserhorn. ;) Love this place; the ride up is such fun a, the views are incredible, and it's not overrun by tourists. (Another is the Fronalpstock on the other side of Lake Luzern. The funicular up to Stoos is included with the Swiss Travel Pass, but you'll pay a moderate fee of about 27chf for the chairlift to the top (or you can hike up!) The views on the way up and at the very top are spectacular.

The best tip that I can give to see Switzerland's scenic mountains on the cheap is to do what I did. Go when I was in my 30s, not wait until I'd retired well into my 70s! And as a bonus, what are now terribly restricting arthritic old bones, were then young and fit for hiking. Plus the prices were WAY cheaper than now. 😜😉😊

Hi Louis and Alexis, I’m going to Switzerland this weekend and staying for almost two weeks! I was curious how we would get the ticket to go to Schilthorn from Interlaken? I was assuming I’d just use the SBB app and get a round trip ticket or buy a ticket at the Interlaken station, but watching some videos it seems people have a physical card to scan? So I wasn’t sure if it’s cause they bought ticket in person at a station closer to Schilthorn (like Lauterbrunnen), or if I’d just scan the ticket in the SBB app/ticket bought at the Interlaken station? Also the weather predictions for the next two weeks seem to be pretty rainy in Switzerland :( I was wondering how accurate are weather predictions days in advance (like a week in advance) and if the weather can change pretty fast? Thanks a lot!!

One thing people should think about, how do you react to altitude? You can have amazing views at a little lower altitude. I live at 6000 ft/1829 meters in New Mexico (SW US). But I feel that walking around at even 10K/3000 meters can be challenging. I've had friends who got altitude sick visiting me. I got altitude sick to snowshoeing around 3000 meters. It is no fun and can be life threatening. I'm sure Swiss doctors are excellent at treating it, but you might try doing these things because everyone is different. A little bit lower altitude might actually allow you to enjoy your time more. You can still do a lot of great activities. (BTW, young children aren't immune. I know of someone who took his child hiking in Colorado which is a very mountainous US state and his child got altitude sick and he didn't.)

The short answer is the Jungfrau is not worth it, especially when set side by side with the other alternatives. I've been to the area on six different occasions beginning in 1978 and have never been able to convince myself that the cost of getting those last few miles from Kleine Scheidegg was worth it. On the other hand the Aiguille du Midi from Chamonix to Pointe Hellbronner is worth every penny (or Euro). It gives to the everyday pedestrian access to jaw dropping scenery that would otherwise require the skill and condition of a mountain climber to enjoy. Not only that it is a marvel of engineering and construction, by far the best cable car excursion in the world!

Just came back from my 10 days trip from Swizerland and i can confirm that Jungfraujoch not worth the money and time. Couple of reasons based on my personal experience. 1- Very costly. 2- If you go during early Spring even till May end like i was there last week you wont get a chance to explore it. Snow activity area that also lead for hike to other area was closed due to SNOW. Staff mentioned if we have too much SNOW then we are not open. 2- If you cant get out of the building then why would you go in crowded place just to see everything from glass windows and nothing else. I know on SPINX terrace we have small open area but it is over crowded. My suggestion is to go to Kleine Scheidegg/Eigergletscher and go outside and see the beautify. My fav was Grindalwald First.

Once or twice I saw someone bring a dog onto a train or tram and stay in the luggage area with them. It might only be certain train cars, I’m not sure. As far as dog breeds, I don’t know if any breeds are banned there. Someone from Switzerland will have to help you more, sorry.. hope you have a wonderful trip.

You can assume your dog is welcome unless there is a sign saying otherwise. The Swiss are very dog friendly. Welcome on public transport (sometimes dogs require a ticket). Same countryside rules as UK in that dog needs to be on a leash when in a protected area or there is livestock present. If in doubt ask. The Swiss are happy to help. You will enjoy your trip. The Jungfrau area is a little bit of heaven on Earth.

Also I need to get the train from Geneva airport to martingy and back to airport. What is the best train ticket? Swiss travel pass is economic and cheaper to buy or any other cheaper pass ?I am 61 years old do you think I can manage to go up on the hill jungfroujoch without feel sick? Is it worth go that high altitude ? Any other mountain worth to visit? Please give me some tips 🙏🙏 as I am travelling by my self too🙏🙏

G'day from Australia Louis and Alexis, thank you so much for all your help and videos, they are extremely helpful. Just 1 question, if I get a Saver Day Pass rather than a Swiss Travel Pass, I don't get the 50% discount on the gondola rides with these? Is that correct? Thank you so much for your help and have a great day.

  • @Fan652w

Thank you for an extremely informative video. At the prices now being charged, (160 franks for Swiss Travel Pass holders ) the Jungfraujoch is just not worth it. Two further alternatives I would suggest are firstly, the Gornergrat, which costs about 50 franks if you have a Swiss Travel Pass. Unlike the Jungfraubahn which is mostly in tunnel,, the Gornergrat railway is almost entirely in the open. At the top there is an almost 360" view. Secondly the Mittelalallin, 3462m altitude, at stunningly beautiful Saas Fee. Saas Fee is reached by the 511 bus, which runs every 30 minutes from Visp. The assent to Mittelalallin is by two cable cars, and then an (underground) funicular.

Traveling to Interlaken in April and looks like the Top of Europe pass is available until the end of April 2023 along with the regional pass. Is this correct? We don't want to purchase if it goes away before then but if it's still available through April, we would add that. If not ~ all of these options are really helpful foe our four day trip to the region..

3:54 Hahaha! A couple of years ago I went to Niesen (the big pyramid mountain near Spiez and Interlaken). I mentioned it to my hotel owner's son and he said: "I've never been there" (he is about 40). Well, obviously, you live there so you can always go, so you forever postpone it because... why not? Hehe. So, Louis, , have you ever been to Niesen? 🙂The funicular up is awesome because it appears to not have changed since the 1960s maybe? An old creaky Von Roll affair with all doors manual and looking and sounding exactly like I remember from growing up in Poland (we have funiculars too!) years ago. The only obvious upgrade is that the old hand-cranked emergency break (a large metal "steering" wheel in front and back) has been replaced by something automatic. The track still makes those 1960s rythmic clangs at each joint, it's simply _fabulous._ It's also the longest funicular in the world (I think)? But for a tourist on a fixed time schedule Niesen is probably not worth it as similar views exist from peaks closer to Interlaken.

The Berner Oberland pass price gets you the discounted price of 99CHF for the trip to the Jungfraujoch. From what I understand The Top of Europe pass has been discontinued. The attraction is called Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe. I did this trip July 22 & it was good fun, not too busy & an escape from the summer heat in the valley.
