Is Joe Biden's bid for re-election in trouble? | Anywhere but Washington

In the vital swing state of Michigan, growing fractures among the Democratic base could spell trouble for Joe Biden in the November election. As party loyalists canvas in the run up to a primary vote, a protest movement against the president’s support for the war in Gaza gains momentum. Oliver Laughland and Tom Silverstone visit the state.

    Voter turnout in odd years is typically below 50%. People just dont care, which is a shame because 26% of the voting population could decide who will govern 100% of constituents in city council, county council, mayor's races, and even governorships. @@JohnKobaRuddy Not really. The issue is the US drugs market ISN'T a free market. The barrier to entry is exceedingly high and one of two companies control each drug and so jack up the price. How can they control it? Thanks to the FDA and the way drugs are approved in the USA. If it was a free market then the price would collapse, as we see in other parts of the world where the pharmaceutical market is free. "Privately owned" and "free market" are two very different things, one includes state funded monopolies, the other does not.

    The situation unfolding in Gaza represents a profound tragedy for the Palestinian people and the victims of Hamas terrorism. This crisis, however, extends far beyond the immediate disaster, extending into the geopolitical landscape in the USA, Ukraine, and the U.S. presidential elections. The intense global focus on Gaza has shifted the spotlight away from the Ukraine, thereby reducing the level of scrutiny and pressure previously directed at Russia. This shift has weaken Western resolve to support Ukraine and exposing rifts within the collective Western response to global security challenges. The different reactions among Western nations to the Israel-Hamas conflict threaten the cohesion necessary for addressing such issues. Moreover, the West's moral authority has been called into question due to perceived double standards. While Russia's targeting of civilians and civilian infrastructure in Ukraine have been met with widespread condemnation, similar actions attributed to Israel have not elicited the same collective outrage. This has played into Russia's narrative, where the West's commitment to justice, human rights, and self-determination is only a facade. The terrible destruction and reports of civilian casualties in Gaza have further eroded global faith in Western intentions. This erosion of trust and perceived hypocrisy could fracture the unity of the West. The inability of Western nations to present a united front or to effectively manage what some perceive as a rogue isreali state acting in opposition to Western values, further plays into Russia's strategic interests. The implications extend into influencing voter sentiment and the outcome of future U.S. elections. The widespread disillusionment among younger and more diverse American electors over the Gaza issue could mean that Donald Trump has a better chance of winning the election, because Biden has not been able to take a firmer humanitarian stance about Gaza. Trump's election means diminished support for Ukraine and NATO, and a Russian-friendly U.S. president, which means Russia could find itself in a significantly advantageous position. This would allow Russia to pursue its objectives in Ukraine and elsewhere with reduced opposition, as Western nations grapple with internal divisions and multiple international crises.

    Mass Release of Illegal Aliens, Including Criminals INA Section 235(b) requires that inadmissible aliens, whether subject to expedited removal or regular removal proceedings, be detained. This includes asylum seekers. Further, Section 236(c) of the INA requires the government to detain inadmissible aliens who have committed criminal offenses or who are inadmissible on terrorism grounds. Despite federal law, under Secretary Mayorkas very few of the migrants who were encountered at our borders over the last three years were detained. Rather, under the policies of Secretary Mayorkas, they were processed and released into the country. Secretary Mayorkas himself admitted that over 85 percent of migrants encountered at the southern border have been released into the U.S.[21] The Department of Homeland Security’s detention statistics confirm this mass release policy. In 2023, the average number of aliens detained on a daily basis was just 28,289. In FY 2022, the average daily population was 22,578, are far below the number of detention beds ICE maintains: 34,000. Moreover, the Biden Administration has proposed cutting detention beds to 25,000 in the FY24 budget. It also proposed cutting beds in FY 2023. Mayorkas’ mass release policy has let criminals roam free in the United States. According to data obtained by the House Judiciary Committee in January 2024, there are at least 617,607 aliens with criminal convictions or pending charges on the non-detained docket (awaiting court proceedings). • @k_tell

    @k_tell

    2 ай бұрын

    @@NotShowingOff On the "volatile" subject, actually you can get some pretty stable parliamentary systems. Here in the Netherlands Mark Rutte has been PM since 2010 although he is now acting PM because the last GE result made it difficult for a coalition to be formed (I have my own view on how this should be resolved but that's another story). Rutte is VVD, a center right party. 3 of his 4 coalitions were formed with the CDA, another center right party, and before Rutte became PM in 2010 the previous PM was Jan Peter Balkenende of the CDA, and he became PM in 2002, meaning we have had 22 years of government by parties with very similar policies, although the changing nature of the coalitions has made some difference to the flavor of the governments. Personally I vote D66 because I like their stance on social and environmental issues, so I would not pick either Rutte or Balkenende , but it is hard to argue that Dutch government has been "volatile" over the last 22 years, and I would say you could make the case that it has been less volatile than the US! On the subject of corruption I think that PR reduces the amount of corruption because it makes it more difficult to target sections of the electorate. This is not a PM vs President question, the UK is almost as vulnerable to this type of corruption as the US, because it too has a non-proportional system that values some voters more than others, and when you value some voters more than others you open you make it easier for other nations, or wealthy people to corrupt your elections since they only have to buy the votes of a small minority of the electorate (by "buy" here I don't mean directly, I mean "pay for social media posts targeting the valued voters"). Another way to reduce corruption is to reduce the amount of money in politics. That's another thing I would campaign for if I was a US citizen: campaign spending limits that work and don't have loopholes.

    Providing Taxpayer Funding for NGOs to Aid and Abet Illegal Aliens On March 28, 2023, the DHS Inspector General released a report following its audit of funds awarded under the American Rescue Plan Act. The Act was signed into law in March 2021, and hidden inside was a $110 million appropriation to FEMA’s Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP). EFSP would award this funding to nonprofits to provide food, shelter, and services to illegal aliens encountered at the southern border.[30] The report found that a portion of the grant recipients violated the terms of the program, failing to provide receipts for reimbursements, failing to maintain logs of individuals served, or providing services for individuals who didn’t have DHS records. Out of the audit’s $12.9 million sample, OIG was unable to account for $7.4 million. If the same pattern held for the entire batch of funding, FEMA would be unable to account for nearly $64 million of the sample.

    I ABSOLUTELY will vote for Joe Biden. Our material costs went up by %50 but we could charge double for the same service. My guys got 25% rather than the full 50% increase. If your super rich vote Biden.
