Is it worth upgrading a Mac Pro 2010?

Ғылым және технология

My brother’s Mac Pro is single CPU, Quad-Core 2.8 GHz Xeon W3530, Mac Pro with 32 GBs of RAM, and a hand-me-down GeForce 1060. He'd like to upgrade it so he can put off buying a new computer for a year or two and didn't want to spend much money.
So he purchased an AMD 6600 XT and 6-Core CPU for all of $225. This is the process and the results.
The $75 Upgrade to a Mac Pro 3,1.

    As someone who grew up in the second Bandon, I've always wanted to go to Bandon, Ireland. The pictures make it look cool. Lord Bennett who named Bandon who came over from the UK brought gorse with him and it's a HUGE problem as an invasive species to the southern Oregon coast. My brother does make a gorse cider where he picks the blossoms and makes basically a heavier gorse wine and then blends it into a very dry cider. It's actually a great cider.

    @@dmug Now that I'd like to taste. I live on the SE coast where there's so much gorse its colour is featured in the county flag. Purple and Gold. Purple for the heather that grows extensively, and Gold for the gorse that lights up the countryside right about now there's that much of it. Love the smell of it. I'm sure it's a nice 'drunk' the way your brother brews it. Can't say much about Bandon Cork as it's been years since I've been in it. Cork county, particularly West Cork is stunning though.

    Love learning about the old classic mac pros. I recently bought a 2010 mac pro for $100 AUS that did not work but has a dual cpu tray upgraded with the maximum cpu's for that machine, 32 gb of ram, a usb 3 pcie adapter and a blue ssd drive sled and 3 attachment for ssd's to the other sleds. I believe it needs a new power supply but I bought it for the parts. Plus I bought another 2010 mac pro that does work for $200 that is a dual quad core cpu, 32gb of ram, a metal spported graphics card and 2 tb seagate harddrive. I have a m2 and nmve dual adapter and have put a 128 gb m2 ssd and 500 gb nmve ssd on it. I will waiting for Gregs other videos and upgrade the working mac pro and use a power supply from one of my 2009 mac pros to try and fix the non working mac pro. Look forward to the other videos. One day I might even own a 2019 mac pro when they become cheap enough.

    First love your channel and your seemingly infinite knowledge of all things Mac Pro 5,1. I pretty much maxed my sc MP to play games and it WAS a lot of fun. But as you already stated thats for older titles and my library was filled thanks to Santa with newer CPU dependent games like Starfield aka Star Wars. And while I love all my MPs they either are retired or serve as a HTMac vs a gaming rig. In fact it cost excruciatingly LESS to build a mid-tier PC that plays everything @1440p locked 60FPS with max settings then it did to upgrade my Mac to play only old titles. Jat, cheers.

  • @dmug

    @dmug

    Yeah, I was wondering if there were some games that simply were going to crush the Mac Pro, my brother and I don't play online games, and we only had the games in his Steam Library (nor does he have a FiOS connect like myself so it takes a lot longer to download games) so we were stuck with older titles. I'd checked Stray, CyberPunk 2077 and Alan Wake 2 but I even had my Mac Pro 5,1 at the launch of CyberPunk and used the NoAVX hack. With a Radeon VII at 1440 upscaled to 4k it was a 60 FPS experience mostly maxed. I have a feeling if CyberPunk runs fine, those others would as well. I know there's genres of games that probably are going to punish a Mac Pro 5,1 more, mostly the competitive MMO online style games but as someone who doesn't play many games and limited time, I'm just never going to be evaluating those. StarField though notoriously ran like shit on even high end gaming rigs so I feel like that says less about the Mac Pro than it does about the game's optimization.

    In my experience with this heatsink (I have the single core model), you can't over-tighten it. Once you tighten them all the way they won't go any further. The main thing is to do a criss cross pattern and only tighten each screw 3, or 4 rotations as you do that, as to not put too much pressure on one side of the cpu. Then go over the screws again until each one stops and gives you resistance. I have never been able to over-tighten them because they don't let me. I thought the over-tightening was only an issue with the de-lidded models?

    @@dmug Gonna have to agree with @alienrefugee51 on this Greg. Upgraded 20+ machines and there is no guess work. The screws don't simply resist, they come to a definite stop point. I can't understand people saying you can over-tighten/crush/bend CPU pins. I see more memory/cpu issues on FB groups with people not tightening to stop point. The only over-tighten issue is people that don't de-lid on a dual core 2009 board, and then i'm like "good luck with that" :)

But I have a thumb drive with (OCLP) Monterey and the old SSD with High Sierra from the 3,1... If I plug in the High Sierra drive, can I boot it into MacOS? Will I be able to boot into Linux again...... What should the "order" of my actions be to boot into Mac OS and/or Linux???? I am planning to use the thumb drive to have Monterey working... And Linux Ubuntu... Thank you for your response...

    I think the bottom line here is these older. Mac pros have more than outlive their expected life and and they still deliver a crazy amount of value I would argue over and above similar PCs that were sold at the same time. I have 2; a 3,1 & a 4,1. I use them primarily as large drive carrier photo repositories so they really only get turned on a few times a year when I need something but seriously these systems are just great and they run and run and run.

    The NVRAM has degraded on 2 5,1 Mac Pro backplanes for me in the last year. Stuck at Catalina because OCLP simply won’t budge on anything newer. It WAS a 12-core 3.46Ghz system with 96GB and 2TB of mixed NVMe and AHCI PCIe flash running Monterey. It’s so power hungry, I’m going to replace it with a 12-core 2013 Mac Pro and use the RX580 I have in my 5,1 in an eGPU enclosure and roll the 5,1 back to High Sierra and Mojave without OCLP. All the work arounds and advice to get any OS above Catalina to boot/install on every forum or KZread channel I’ve tried failed miserably and I can run universal binaries of current IZotope and Waves plugins with current Pro Tools and current Reason 12 just fine on Catalina.

    Well, only if you want to use a GPU from 2023 in a computer from 2010. The Radeon VII offers similar performance to the 6600 XT but many were mined pretty hard since they had 16 GB HBM2 memory and still go for as much as a new 6600 XT if not more. 5700 XTs are a better used option but slightly slower and not a huge price difference. Of the three options, the 6600 XT draws by far the least power but requires flashing and can only be used with Monterey and newer. The VII is supported in Mojave and the 5700 XT in Catalina. Just how it is trying to keep a computer nearly 15 years old semi-currrent.
