They actually do more than pay the bills with those buttons on the remote. I've heard that at least Netflix and Disney+ will outright not allow their apps to be pre-installed onto a TV if there is not a dedicated button for the app on the remote. So if Sony wants to include Netflix, Disney+, or other major streaming services on their internal OS, they usually have to include that button on their remote.

Just for future reference, if that is of interest to you, you can also hand off image processing to your AVR, and get a high end AVR, then you can forego paying a huge premium on just your TV for that one specific processor model, whereas a high end AVR makes everything better, even just listening to music with the TV turned off.^^

I was in the market for an 85” for a bright room (two walls of windows and two skylights). Soon as I saw the prices listed for the X95K, I bought the previous gen X95J before stock could run out and saved thousands for very similar performance.

Bought my 85” for 1600$ new because it was the KD-85XH, it's an old 2020 Modell. What I saw in stores of any Sony besides the new Z9J/8K ones running specific 8K movies the experience is almost identical to every Sony Bravia TV. Really can't make out what you pay this hefty bonus on those TV's. But compared to those 1000$ TV's as a 85” which most often you can't get from other manufacturers, the picture quality is above and beyond better on the Sony's. Just saying.

I bought the previous model x95j and it was the best purchase I ever made. Pictures amazing. Colours are 3 times brighter than oled. And it'll look just as good in 5-10 years so will still be amazing when it gets relegated to bedroom TV. The only problem with it is very occasional blooming in dark scenes, and finding source material good enough lol. I end up watching hdr demo's on youtube just to appreciate the panel lol. Sony make the best bright room TV's on the market. And honestly when you play to its strengths, bright colours vs dark oled scenes. The picture is jaw dropping. And im sure as shit not dropping 6k on a panel thats susceptible to oled burn in. XD

Lol there's a huge difference between the X95k and an LG C2. Huge. I returned my 77" C2 because it barely outshined my 2017 C7 OLED. Had a B2 for a week before I had the c2. Second time around you might consider mini led for the massive advantages in brightness and worry-free gaming for hours and hours. ;)

It entirely depends on the rest of your speakers. It's not going to be timbre matched, unless you're also using Sony tvs for all you're other channels, which would be stupid. And it's not going to keep up with anything of even decent sound quality. Say you've got an explosion on the screen, the processor will send the sound to probably all three front channels if it's centered. You would be able to make out all the tinny garbage coming from the TV vs the reasonable sound coming from the rest of the speakers. And if you've got a sound bar, you've already got a matching center channel. No point in probably making it worse. It's not a _"weird conclusion to come to"_ on a $3200 television where people will most likely have some sort of sound solution that is orders of magnitude better than what the center channel can keep up with. You can't just add a single shit-tastic speaker into a decent setup. It will call attention to itself all the time.

If you have a TV with a variable line level analog output (follows the volume of the TV), you could connect an amplified subwoofer directly to the TV and then simply tweak the crossover frequency until things sound decent and it will work very well for improving audio without a soundbar. If the TV has goods mids and acceptable highs, it works great, especially for scenarios such as a bedroom TV.

About the center speaker (4:47): You have to keep in mind that in surround media the center speaker is ONLY used for speech. It is (with very few exceptions) not meant for effects or atmo sounds. Regarding the mentioned "phantom center" (5:16): This is created by L/R only. The actual center speaker is not used for this. Especially if you don't have a perfect or calibrated setup, using the TV as a center speaker could very likely end up improving the experience because you can locate the speech very easy. There is a reason for engineers to implement this. Please fact-check before stating stuff, otherwise you might loose your trustworthiness.

This is just utterly incorrect. The center channel carries a huge load for effects in addition to dialog. It literally carries the bulk of the sound that ties to what you are seeing happen on screen. It is by far the most important channel in every form of a multi channel mix, and using your TV for a center with a decent system is a terrible idea. Talk about fact check.

There's dozens of movies with great full range content coming out of the center channel, including Life of Pi, MI Ghost Protocol, HERO, Green Lantern and so many more. An extreme example would be Gladiator, which has a significant amount of the weapon noises, horse hooves, chariot bass, and a variety of other full range effects mixed into the center. @@bwiz6514 I am ging to check on those title. Please do me a favor and check on the sources I sent you. This channel is by definition preserved for speech. If an audio engineer decides to ignore that, it is a niche case. Center speakers are often designed with speech in mind and thus emphasize the frequency spectrum of speech specifically. If there is any "full range" content for Center speakers, it is designed for speakers with speech emphasis, such as TV-speakers.

For me lack of oled is a plus. Yes the problem with burn-in is smaller on TV, but I do not want to take care of TV, remember to turn it off, be afraid to put something static like music player when friends are around, have higher chance of failure after 5+ years. OLEDs also have lower brightness, which is really big issue for me, as I am not always watching TV in dark cinema conditions. Slightly better image quality is not worth it. Last year I bought premium Sony TV, exactly because it looks good as is not an OLED.

It's amazing how my 10 year old plasma still destorys most new TVs at contrast ratio, colour, blooming and ghosting. (Panasonic P42GT60) Only issue is 42 is starting to feel small, but it's such a gorgeous picture. Oh also, it uses 300-400 watts...

Two equidistant speakers outputting the same signal, or a mono signal (no stereo information) will come through as a "virtual center channel." So since dialogue is 99% in mono, it will just appear as such. This is why the argument for well placed bookshelf speakers is so strong in my opinion; better stereo image, better frequency response, and way more options. Downsides would be no simulated atmos, and the size might be problematic in small spaces.

  • @MysteryMii

    @MysteryMii

Yeah, but the problem is that if you mix a surround track down to stereo (considering most DVDs and Blu-rays only have a surround track and not a separate stereo track), it’s going to have too much dynamic range when compared to a properly mixed stereo track, leading to parts where the dialogue is too quiet that you have to turn the volume up, only to burst your eardrums when there’s an explosion. By separating the dialogue through placing it in a center channel, you can just adjust each channel separately so that the dialogue sounds right without having to worry about the other channels.

Well placed bookshelf speakers works great if you are alone right in the center of the screen, but a lot of people don't buy a huge tv to be alone in front of it, so a center speaker would be better

The LG C1 is great as long as your eyes aren't sensitive to judder. LG Televisions just don't handle motion anywhere near as well as Sony and that's why I personally went Sony when I decided to buy. Everything else about the C1 is great. Especially now it's dropped in price. It has all the usual features you would want from a mid-high tier TV and the picture quality itself is great especially with HDR Content. I Just wish LG Would finally deal with the motion issues because there would otherwise be a couple of them in my house in an instant!

Dude! I've paused at 13:47 due to the mentions about the sound. There's a LOT in that TV sound wise that the out of the box experience does NOT utilise! It's insane. We've yet to get the X95K into my work but the 55X94K sound for example is fantastic for a TV. Not in the same way that a properly configured Sony OLED would sound but MUCH better than most other models out there. It's not just as simple as 2 poor stereo speakers plonked at the bottom of the set. Whenever setting these up, they always require some tweaking in the settings for them. Also, turning on Dolby Audio makes a massive difference. Turn off surround mode (it's not great) Dialogue enhancement anywhere between 2-4, depending on personal preference EQ vaules of Max, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, 4 (My preference) Fire up the volume offset too That's what almost all of the TVs in my shop are set up with (Sony retailer in the UK). Super happy you guys covered it though as I think OLED is still going to be king for most of our customers until Mini LED comes down a bit in price.

I legit love my X85J. I chose it over OLED due to needing higher brightness. It may have fewer dimming zones, but i really can only see blooming on stuff like game loading screens; never in a movie or when action is happening. The OS is waaaaaaaayyyyyyy better than what other things I've used. I tried the LG C1 OLED at my friends house and that had such a terrible experience using the thing. On top of that, I really couldn't notice a huge gap in picture quality. Sony's processing and color science look way more natural than LG too.

Speaker impression is really short. which this is short circuit so yeah. But saying dont use s-center because it most likely sucks. Then hearing that the speaker setup in the tv is lacking base to a kind of extreme could mean they sacrificed that to get better sound quality for higher frequencies then base. Making it ok to listen to. This is only my impression i have not listened to that tv but that would be interesting since the Sony HT system looks pretty good. A phantom center also only works if your seated correctly if your watching with 2-3 or more people most likely nobody has a good phantom sound source. so no a phantom speaker does not in any way what so ever do the same as a real center. the more speaker the bigger the sweet spot for the listeners
