Hello, no you don't need the app to run or set her up...or anything really. It's helpful to personalize topics or for example if the child's name is pronounced wrong you can fix it in the app, or if you want to add topics for Moxie to talk about but even without the app you can ask Moxie certain things verbally & she'll do it without the help of the app. (For example if I want to set the volume to Moxie Down I can go on the app & set the level of audio or I can just ask Moxie to lower her volume & she will set it to the level u ask.

Hold moxie up to a mirror please :). Can she see herself?
